So that's you!

jing mentioned you were do-boy on DK. Figured you'd be on here. At first I thought it was an SR500 but turns out its an XS650. Beautiful bike! What did you do to get it up and running? :)

its actually a xs400, small brother to the 650. Two of my friends have the 650 and i wish i got the bigger one because parts are so damn easy for them to find whereas alot of my delays have had to do with parts. for instance the rear master cylinder rebuild kit and pads are NLA. i paid $80 for the MC rebuild kit from the states. pretty ridiculous for a metal rod and some rubbers. When i went to see the bike, it was only firing on one cylinder so i thought it was blown, NBD i wanted to rebuild it anyways but i did a compression test and its decent (150, 155). turns out it was just the timing. cleaned out the carbs, UNI filters and rejetting, lowered it a bunch, and it has a CBR integrated tail light mounted flush into my rear "fender," new headlight, drag bars, blah blah blah

i'd like to rewire the whole damn thing because i keep getting gremlins and it has a draw somewhere so i wired a switch to cut the battery off when sitting.

this is one of my friend's xs650

Nice man! Did u say you had a 500? Super rare and I almost bought one as a basket case last year for $500 from seattle. I think the yammy's looks so awesome pretty close to stock and honda's automatically cafe themselves lol

I'm in the garage now and figured out why it isn't running proper after sitting for a day. One of the spark plugs fouled after maybe 300km's. I know its running hella rich for some reason. Getting HORRIBLE mileage

Yeah, I have an SR500 but it was supposd to be a secret. :p Getting it shipped up from California soon.

Better check that main jet and air/fuel mixture screw!

Good luck!

haha i caught your ninja edit on my email update :p can't wait to see that thing man, alot of my inspiration has been from sr500's online. you know the big moon one? fave of all time. i think i'm having ignition issues too with the ancient wiring. i went 2 steps up on the main with the pod filters. going to order some new coils soon. a bunch of sr500 parts are interchangeable with xs400 eh. along with the rd400.

Oh, plugs are definitely rich, black as night and the left one that fouled was soaked. I'm a bit surprised because it should be lean through the low/mid range

The things I don't get with GSXR is that they almost never change the rim style. It's always been that relatively ugly 3 spoke garbage.

Anyone else agree? (As opposed to ZX6R 6-spoke, which looks contemporary)

That looks pretty sick. I am building a CB750 cafe as well (you might have seen it at Cypress while you were there). Do you mind if i ask where you source your parts? Any good forums for some extra info?

Thanks!

bcrdukes
10-04-2011, 07:36 PM
Not sure if I saw your bike specifically but I know that Dave & Darcy can and will build a proper bike.

I got my Ohlins shocks from Rod @ RMR Suspension in Abbotsford. They are an authorized Ohlins dealer and repair centre hence why I went with them. For the RaceTech Gold valve cartridge emulator, I bought them through Dave & Darcy @ Cypress since it's part of the MotoCanada catalog or whatever it's called.

For cafe parts for your CB750, I don't know of any people locally who sell stuff so your best bet is online. Most of my parts were pretty generic so no real "source" so to say. If you want some cool CB750 cafe parts, give Dustin Kott a call @ Kott Motorcycles in Santa Clarita, CA. Dustin specializes in custom fabrication specifically for the Honda CB series - this guy is a pro. Your next best bet is the famous Steve Carpenter in Orange County (Google for his info.) He's highly respected and his parts are proven to work w/o any problems but some of his stuff isn't cheap.

Locally, I'm going to have to say Cypress is a good bet and also Bill @ 5th Gear in Richmond.

This bike is ridiculously tall. It actually sits higher that my Dads 07 Harley Ultra Classic. But for touring, it’s a great bike for 6 hour + rides. The faring is huge, but protects so well I have gotten away with dry jeans in a rain storm before.

My biggest complaint, power and weight. Of course more power would be nice, and weight in that it’s almost too light in wind because of the faring size. Ride through some good side wind, that faring just turns the thing into a kite, pushes you all over the damn place to the point of it getting a little hairy.

Looking into a new seat now as the OEM one is a bit too hard. Some other touch ups that I’m hoping to get to over the winter.

Im drooling over the Yamaha pics lol.

There was a nice cafe conversion on a /5 on Craigslist this past summer.

Asking price was high $6K and I don't think the guy was going to budge. A little over priced in my opinion, especially for a /5 when for the same price, you get much more with a /6. Well maintained at Shail's too but too bad these guys were sitting on their laurels. :p

So far, I'm happy with my purchase. :D

I actually saw it, was priced too high i think as well. REALLY nice looking though, would have loved to have owned it. The white one, right? A friend up North was thinking about buying it, dont think he did though.

Shails is awsome. I love being able to buy brand new parts from BMW for my 25 year old bike. I cant find brand new parts for my 10 year old Hondas.

I just read through your build thread. How the hell did you get a collector plate for that? My BMW is BONE stock, and I had to apply TWICE, was denied the first time. WTF??? Im was considering moving to the S faring for the front, but only havent done it becouse of the collector plate.

It really must just depend on who gets your file. I couldnt belive it when mine was turned down the first time. The bike is damn near mint.

I can't remember if it was white. I'm pretty sure it was black. The photos of the bike were in the guy's garage or workshop for sure.

That's one thing I like about BMW. They still make parts for their cars and bikes even when they're way beyond the product life cycle.

What did they deny you on for the bike? I was very careful applying as I've been through the process far too many times after being denied time after time after time.

You have to make sure everything matches. One bad decal/sticker, missing a bracket of some sort, or whatever - you're instantly denied. They pick on the dumbest of details.

I managed to qualify because everything on the bike was model and era specific. I had all the proof and details to back up the bike conforming to ICBC's approved Collector Plate upgrade list. There are certain things you are allowed to upgrade pending they fall within the same era and model of the bike such as the shocks - this is allowed. The seat was SR500 specific and made during the same year as the bike's production. Again, I had all the proof to show ICBC.

To avoid disappointment, I made photocopies of all the receipts of my bike (I love the previous owners for this) and included them in my application. I also left a note in the application to call Dave and Darcy @ Cypress Motorbike for references as they helped me do the restoration and to verify the parts were all correct.

It's a pain in the ass. I've dealt with the Specialty Plates Team for almost 6 years. I know what they look for and what kind of silly tricks they've got up their sleeve. I had to be VERY careful with this application. For what it's worth, that team has I believe only 6 or 8 people. One thing I learned over the years and this is the one that pisses me off the most - they are extremely picky with cosmetics.

91civicZC
11-22-2011, 06:19 AM
They actually denied it because they wrote down “scratches to paint” and circled the front fender and the faring.

The only problem was that in the picture, there was no way you could have made out any scratches if there was any.

I called the person up and asked about it, he basically told me “just resend it, it will probably pass” which translated to me as “we just wanted to waste your time and ours, because we won’t be making much money off you”. I wasn’t happy, but sent in two new pictures, didn’t change a thing. I didnt even wash it this time, and it passed.

No big deal, I have it now, not going to worry about it. Looking forward to spring!

Good call, the CBR has been very kind to me (financially and an awesome first bike)

I wouldn't say money isn't an issue, I have the you work hard, you play hard mentality but I don't want a bike that requires maintenance cost which equal the price of my CBR lol.

I've ridden the 848 before and I loooved the V-Twin

HEY,

I think I was inquiring about your bike before hand rizo...I had an S2000 back then. I'm not exactly sure though cause your profile says your in Toronto.

Anyways, I honestly wouldn't find it practical of having a bike and an S2000, unless you have another car with 4 seats or more comfort. Not to say its not doable or anything, but when I considered of doing the same, I asked myself "which am i gonna insure in the summer?". Both would be nice, but the insurance on a convertible and a motorcycle is not exactly cheap.

My duc just hit the 10k mark last weekend, previous owner did the 12k maintenance early and it costed around 6-700$, most of it going into labor.

If you are considering the duc, it'd be good to have money saved up incase anything were to happen to it, I can almost guarantee its not gonna be a cheap fix >.<

Hey I think I sent you a PM a long time ago asking about Ducati ownership, good memory lol

thanks for the heads up. I don't want to turn this thread into a bike vs. s2000 post but I think it's a relevant comparison as a "summer/weekend vehicle." At the moment I have the CBR and an IS350, so I've never had a convertible in my life and just figured it was time. I can see the downside of owning a bike & s2000 because it would definitely be a hard choice on a nice day. I would probably pick the bike and my girlfriend would pick the S2000.

I know ownership of a Ducati doesn't come cheap and if I was to purchase a Duc, it would probably be pre-owned. My brain tells me to keep the CBR but my heart tells me to buy a ducati (don't laugh lol)

and by the way I went to the University of Toronto and I'm always bouncing back & forth from Vancouver & Toronto.

rk604
02-16-2012, 06:12 PM
08+ Ducati isn't that bad dude, there's some guys in the states thats racking up 75,xxx miles+, and that was from last year. The way I see it is that valve adjustments have to be done every season or two, which is gonna run around 600-700, which is not that bad for what your getting yourself into.

My brain told me to get another CBR too, would of been cheaper initially, cheaper gas, cheaper maintenance. Once you test a ducati though, your heart will be set man, guaranteed!

Yeah that's true considering the bikes pre-owned are selling for about 12k-15k so the saving aren't justified.

I'm in no rush, I'll ride the CBR till I find a qualified chariot.

I've imported 5 or 6 bikes/cars from the US and over the years, I've noticed after all the time, effort, money put into importing one, they sometimes aren't all that much worth it. Not unless you find an absolute deal, of course.

When factoring in the manufacturers ransom fees (i.e. BMW is one of them) for a recall letter, and/or any modifications necessary, GST/PST, RIV fees etc. the end result is you saving a mere few hundred dollars (comparing bikes to bikes.) The idea came across my mind to bring over a Monster 696 but after the final dollar value, I said forget it. It's cheaper here. :p

i was in the same boat as you last year when i was thinking of buying an '07 AP2.

end of the day, both of them are RWD, 2 seaters with almost no trunk.

both are 'fun toys' IMO and not really practical so i ended up not buying the S2K as i couldn't justify having them both.

i hardly rode my bike last season though (~1500kms) but i have a feeling i'd regret it if i sold it.

unless i buy a used 1098 that is ;)

So you ended up keeping the bike and not buying the S2000? I'm kind of spoiled because a couple of my friends have S2000 and they let me use them occasionally. It's an awesome feeling when you find some curvy roads and have the top down. (although the same could be said about the motorcycle lol)

I'm leaning more towards the bike partly because of my parking situation. My apartment only allows two vehicles so the Duc + Daily would be a nice pair.

One side I find about riding the bike is the need to carry your helmet and backpack everywhere you go. Not a big deal but just a hassle at times.

hard to say...im too young in the scene to comment. from what i see though, bikes are capable of higher km than what people perceive them of doing. theyre not the primary commute for our area, making them "high km" if its even low in other countries.

I know personally i wouldn't buy a bike over 10,000-15,000km cause i'd consider them high km compared to other bikes being sold. Doesn't mean that it's high km exactly.

My dad says he rode his for 100xxxkm+ in asia, much more common in that area.

I totally agree with the cost of importing but I haven't seen any EVO Dark Duc's available in BC. If you could swing me some tips on how to import vehicles, that would be greatly appreciate :hotbaby:

The only real advantage of importing a bike or car into the country is:

1. You got a smoking deal
2. You want a particular model that is not available in Canada (in your case especially.)

Some things to keep in mind when importing (Coles Notes version)

1. Do your market research (which you've done for the most part) but think about resale as well. Will somebody out there want your bike in the next 2 to 3 years? Will you get as much back even when factoring in depreciation? Maintenance? The list goes on.

2. Find out who you are buying from. If it's private - always check for references. I hate to sound like a creep but you'll have to do some Facebook and Google stalking. If the seller is reputable, go for it. If it's a dealer, check to see how good they are with after-sales support

3. Recall letter - Ducati North America charges a premium for this I believe. Try to arrange for one if you are buying from the dealer. Negotiate it in your sale price out the door. You need the recall letter. Without it, you can't register your bike. No exceptions to the rule.

4. Find a reputable shipper. Are you going to pick up the bike yourself? With a friend? Or have it shipped to the border or broker? I have one I've used several times who does runs up California, Oregon and Washington.

5. Get your paperwork done in advance. You'll need the bill of sale, the ad of the bike of where you got it from and your RIV forms. You can complete the RIV process on their website - Registrar of Imported Vehicles (http://www.riv.ca) Don't forget to fax or e-mail in the bill of sale, export letter and title to US Customs and Border Patrol at least 72 business hours in advance.

6. Be prepared to pay your taxes and duties at the border. You have to do this on the day it is picked up at the border. You will pay duty and GST. PST will be collected by ICBC when you register your bike.

7. Complete the rest of the RIV process. Wait for your RIV clearance and sticker. Insure your bike and ride away.

Anyway, we're going off topic. Just PM me if you have any specific questions.

still got one more day left in the 3 day camp, but so far it's been awesome. there were so many misconceptions i had about riding that were completely smashed when keith explained the proper methods and physics behind everything. i used to be so focused on dragging my knees that all my concentration was spent on hanging off the bike as much as possible. but once i applied keith's teachings i became much smoother and faster, which automatically led to the knee dragging. i'll write more when i get home but all i can say is my confidence level has skyrocketed over the last 2 days. would definitely recommend :)

oh and yeah, keith personally teaches all the classroom sessions and is available to chat with any time.

03-14-2012, 11:38 PM
Dragging knee is only an after effect of proper body position. To concentrate on dragging knee only and not on body position will get you in trouble pretty fast. I took Racer Training at WCSS a few yrs ago and I'm pretty interested on how much more advanced the basic techniques are. Also don't forget to take pics of your melted tires! That is actually more impressive than puck scrapes!

Gonna try out some of the 2fast trackdays after I do a couple in BC first. Hopefully get a few in this season :D

I'm going to probably sign up for the racer training for track and novice license course with WCSS, the one that starts on May 30th if anyone else is interested give me a holla! I think I saw a post from ft33z on the BCSB thread so there's 2 RS'ers on the list so far I guess.

http://www.westcoastsuperbikeschool.com/rtt.php

Oh and there's a few trackdays @ $80 bucks a pop for a half day at pitt meadows. It's not a real track but they've doubled the lot size for this year and I'll be going to the very first sesh on May 1st. Here's the BCSB thread, just shoot Nancy (Squire) a PM and she'll put you on the mailing list for when you can start registering.

I've been out of riding for 10 years. I'm picking up a commuter bike tomorrow, Gladius. I used to have a more aggressive bike but I'm getting older and not sure my back can handle it. Was trying to find a Ducati 696 but after some debate decided to go with the Suzuki because of the lower cost and cheaper maintenance. Plan is to ride to work pretty much everyday it's not raining between now and October. The only bummer is I pulled my jacket out of storage and it looks like it shrunk......or maybe I gained some weight but either way looks like I'll have to buy a new one. At least the boots and gloves still fit. :)

I'll post some pictures when I pick it up.

Lol I've been riding for 4 years, missed out on the last year because I had no bike. I don't consider myself that old... but I am looking for a less aggressive bike as well. I still love sport bikes but I really want something with a more comfortable riding position.
