Best Poutine?

Compared to Costco, all other poutine is less salty... I didn't like Costco's at all ... trust me La Belle is good stuff
Oh and I think I had the worst poutine a few days ago on the BC Ferry haha
The poutine on the ferry isn't even close to the worst. I had it about a week ago on the ferry, and while not the best, was pretty solid. Used White Spot fries (mine were extra crispy which helped keep them from getting soggy), there were ample cheese curds that were not cold, and the gravy, while not deep in flavor was at least not overly salty. I would give it a solid 7/10.

I guess it was a bad draw for me... it was the last ferry back to Vancouver and I guess the lady wasn't in the best of moods, my fries were soggy and the there wasn't enough cheese but not that it mattered cuz it wasn't hot.

Yah sounds like you got a bad batch. I would give it another shot sometime during the day.
I got mine before the ship even set sail, so they had probably just made a new fresh batch of fries for all the incoming customers.

Anyone know if Brados is open on Sundays? I've never been there, let alone go to Commercial Drive.
Anyways, Fresgo Inn restaurant in Surrey has a marginally average poutine. Nothing special, but it's cheaper than New York Fries, and the cheese curds actually end up melting.

IIRC, Brado's is open 7 days a week.
I don't remember a time that I went and it was closed.

I'm really looking forward to there being a Dunn's in Vancouver starting this fall. I have high expectations for them as my sister lives a few minutes away from the one in Laval and the poutine (and everything else) there is super tasty.

There is a Food Truck just downstairs of Ebisu on the corner, called Bada Bing. I had the Philly sub and poutine there... wasn't impressed. :okay:
I also gave Fritz another go last night, I'll have to bump it down a notch, Brado's is the clear-cut #2 by default hehe ...

Do not try costco poutine if the line isn't long as fuck, otherwise they give you fries that have been sitting. Not that it's a problem since it's lined up most of the time, but always have someone in front of you so the chance they fry a new batch is higher. Depending on your liking, ask for a bit of extra gravy.
Tell them to do their shit in this order: Cheese curds, fries then gravy on top so the cheese curds have the heat to help it melt.
I have much experience with the costco at stadium.

I second that.
Almost every fast food chain served it at one point or another. ALL garbage.
McDonald's, Wendy's, A&W, Taco Bell, KFC - all terrible.
If I had to eat 1 out of all the chains though it would be Burger King.
NYF doesn't count as a "regular fast food" joint because they are a specialty FRY shop, and they still don't make a very good poutine lol. However they are slightly better than all the aforementioned shops.

That sounds like it would actually make the Costco poutine decent because the last few times I ordered it there the cheese was always cold and hard. Not a fan. However I'm not sure if I should be so specific with the grumpy lady behind the counter, she might spike my gravy lol.

I am ashamed to proclaim myself the Poutine King haha. I have consumed poutine in almost every establishment that serves it in the lower mainland.
- The Poutine Pizza at Brado's was hilarious. Too bad they closed.
- The Lucic Poutine was pretty good but kinda pricey and there were so many toppings in there I couldn't figure out what I was eating half the time.
- Flying Pig poutine was way too soggy felt like I was eating a mush.
- Smoke's poutine was just alright.
- Dunn's poutine was a disappointment, but the smoked meat sandwich was good.
- Did not like Frenchie's poutine the gravy was too watery.
- Fritz is solid but it's always busy
- my go-to is still La Belle. The Deluxe Smoked Meat or Meat Lovers and their smoked meat sandwich (they only serve the sandwich until 9pm)... :sweetjesus:
I'm forgetting many others but if you want a personal opinion on a place that has poutine you can probably ask and chances are I've swallowed it lol.

Re: the cheese....
Most people are probably used to eating cheese, and seeing it melt.
http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/247197/slide_247197_1446372_free.jpg
With people having an image of melted cheese like idealized like this in their heads.
However, authentic poutine is made with cheese curds, not cheese.Good curds in a poutine aren't all melty.
Softened outsides? Yeah. A bit of melted at the edges makes sense too.
In fact, the defining characteristic of cheese curds is the squeak.
Cheese Curds will have a mild flavour and a rubbery texture.
Good fresh ones will squeak as you bite into them.
The squeak is caused by the proteins in the cheese, which are still very "elastic" because they have been freshly made.
Fans say any Cheese Curd over a day old ain't worth eating. After that, you won't hear or get the squeak, and they get dry and salty-tasting.
If the Cheese Curds taste really salty, they are getting really old.
Cheese Curds (http://www.cooksinfo.com/cheese-curds)
Squeak > Melt
I'm not saying the be-all-end-all is authenticity,
but if people want to judge based on criteria/characteristics of something that isn't the classic qualities,
then I think it should be specifically stated they are looking for a different style. Maybe?
I think this seems like a pretty good judgement criteria.
Perfect Cheese – score/20
A classic poutine is made with squeaky cheddar cheese curds. These are always best at room temperature, and lose their squeak fast when kept in the fridge. This is why the best poutines use cheese made on the same day. A good curd keeps its squeak even after being smothered in gravy. The average curd diameter in your poutine should be at least 1cm. Curds should be evenly distributed throughout the poutine, not just on top. It is okay for the curd to melt a little on the outside – some people prefer a bit of melting – but it should never disintegrate into the gravy. There should be enough curds in a poutine so that you are not left staring at a large bowl of gravy & fries and wanting more – you shouldn’t ever need to ask for “extra fromage.” Other types of cheese may produce good results in designer poutines, but any such substitution should be clearly indicated on the menu.

The fact that La Belle is good is because their cheese curds squeak, and their gravy is quite good from what I remembered. Different strokes for different folks.

To be fair you can make any type of poutine at home. It's fries, toss some cheese on top and pour gravy. I don't agree that La Belle is even comparable to Costco poutine... I literally tossed half my Costco poutine in the trash. Gravy was way too salty and the cheese was cold and rubbery like an eraser.
The prices are on par with most Vancouver poutine shops, the traditional large poutine (which is freakin' huge) is $10. The Jumbo poutine at Fritz is $11. So technically they are all overpriced. The nonchalant attitude of the 2 fat guys could be improved but it's a fast food fry shop. I wasn't expecting much and they are pretty funny sometimes.
^^ seriously? Poutine tastes way better with the cheese melted, I think the general majority agrees

I think you might be in the minority hehe. Squeaky cheese with crispy fries is the best! Why would you want to eat a soft mushy pile of melted cheese with soggy fries swimming in gravy?
$13.50 is for those speciality poutines that load on different toppings isn't it? I think the traditional large is $10. The medium is more than enough for me at $8.
The "Lucic Poutine" with all the toppings at Mean Poutine is like $19, now that is overpriced lol.

they also have really great jerky if you're into it, worth the stop for the jerky alone.
me and my buddy split the full order poutine and when i asked for another fork he cracked some joke about being gay or somthing lol but for 70 mile definately felt like the typical Quebecois attitude

poutine was better than 90% of the stuff in the lower mainland, the fries tasted like either home made, or ordered from somewhere ive never had before, kinda like white spot but more flavour
gravy was obviously hand made as it had pepper corns in it and tonnes of flavour you dont get from a package. curds were good and the entire thing was pretty tasty, not until the last few bites did it become soggy.
solid 8/10
^^^ I honestly really hate white spot fries. Every time I had them they are soggy as shit and they are either not salted or salted way too much.
Angle is all the difference a picture can make, but those fries look cold and soggy. :( Gravy and curds look spot on though.

Smoke's Poutinerie on Granville.
Tried the "Triple Pork", the fries were a soggy, flavourless mess with what looked like microwaved chopped up sausages and pale looking dry pull pork dumped on top. Gravy was watery and everything felt oily, even for a poutine.
Didn't finish it, never again.

Definitely not local but if any of you find yourselves in Halifax, check out Truck Side and visit Cheese Curds. They have some of the best poutine I've ever had. The one you have to try is the Ukrainian Perogi Poutine, though their basic one is good as well.

lol Well considering the weather in Halifax is shit for the majority of the year, I guess they figured they'd create an indoor place. It's owned and operated by Bill Pratt, who was once Prince Charles and Princess Diana's personal chef and has also headed some major events like two Olympics and whatnot. I tried food at the majority of those places and they were all actually pretty good.
