And yet again I say that the health care system has taken amazing care of me. From my problems as a child, to the operations i've had growing up, to visits to the emergency rooms, to my family doctor, every time i've had an issue its been excellent.
I've never experienced emergency room waits, i've never had troubles getting and MRI or getting an appointment with specialists in an extremely reasonable time.
I know their are tons of problems as witnessed daily, and yet if someone asked me personally about the health care system I would say its great. Does anyone have similiar feelings?

waiting times kinda annoy me a bit, but then again I always bring a book or magazine with me....
we have better health care than the united states! lool the 20/20 segment made us look as if we are all sickly and we have no access to health care at all.
they also forgot to mention that our pharmecuticals much more affordable than our american counterparts

Obviously you people never had to use the system before or appriciate what we have here in canada.
CBC recently did a survey of the top 10 canadians ever... do you know who placed first? Tommy Douglas.. do you know who Tommy Douglas is? Probably not because you have your head stuck up your ass. Tommy Douglas was the Great man who invented our health care system. Be appricaitive for what you have. Our health care system is great!
I have a skin condition, and for the treatment i get and the perscriptions, do you know how much i pay? NOTHING. Not a cent!! the perscription i get would cost me 300-400$ a tube in the USA. There would be no way i could pay for that with the salary my company gives me!
My best friend at the age of 24 was diagnosed with testicle cancer. Within 1 week of him seeing a Dr about it... he was in the surgery room getting the cancer removed. ONE FUCKING WEEK! AND HE PAYED NOTHIGN!!! in the states if he wasnt covered by health care he would fucking die!
again appreciate what we have here in canada.

the system may have its problems but it saves people.

What a terribly biased piece. How the hell does making it free increase demand? It doesn't increase the number of ill or injured people.

Ok, our system sucks so now what? Would you be willing to buy private medical insurance with high premiums? Insurance that might not cover everyone in your family because some might not qualify. Are you willing to pay every time you go visit a doctor? Or pay for medicine which might cost you hundreds of dollars every month? I highly doubt it and if we switched to a private insurance tomorrow, I bet half the people in this country would not be able to afford it.
And how is the US system any better? Better for the rich maybe but if you're poor, good luck getting any sort of medical coverage or treatment. For a country which spends billions on wars it's bloody sad they can't even provide public medical coverage for the millions who are uninsured but I guess that might change if Obama has his ways.

ok so you have to wait a bit.. big deal, this gives people who cant normally afford operations and stuff a chance at good health. otherwise, you would have sick lower class people, which means the lower working class show up late for work, steal, do crime, etc. our system is still better than the american health care system.
they were saying how one lady wouldve died if she wasnt treated for a blocked artery or w/e. well in the states, a lot more people would die since they cant afford operations.

Our system isnt bad at all
the govt just likes to screw around with it and siphon funds out probably and mess it up so that we can have a US Healthcare system (which is truly fucked)
cant remember exactly but i think it was proven that the govt lied about the dire condition of our health care system so they could cut some expenditures here and there and some famous analyst group spoke out and proved they were lying.....
probably shouldnt make this comment because i cant remember the story at all but it was during the Liberals, ill have to look it up :/

All social programs are feeling the pinch regardless of boom or recession. It's the way of capitalism and occurs at both the federal and provincial level.

The Canadian system is, and has been, in decline for many many years.
The system of everyone getting free coverage from taxes/premiums does not work because the number of sick/ill people (baby boomer generation) is increasing much faster than the number of new taxpayers (young generation that does not get ill/require extended care).
The American system may sound selfish compared to the Canadian model, but in truth, its financially realistic.
Coming from someone in healthcare, I also strongly believe that equal premium/taxes makes absolutely no sense. I, and many of my friends back home in Vancouver have worked in the health industry for many years. There is no doubt that the majority of the revenue goes to smokers and obese people.
My point, is that if you choose to smoke, or choose to be fat, you should pay more. Why should completely healthy adults who work out be held responsible? The very sad reality is that those who smoke or lead unhealthy lifestyles leading to obesity largely represent the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder - in other words the poor, who contribute the least tax/premiums, take up a disproportionate amount of resources; while the healthy rich pay more and are healthier.
In this regard, I am completely in support of the American system.

I think the best solution is a hybrid of the Canadian healthcare system and private healthcare. IMO, if I don't want to wait, I should be able to head down to the False Creek Urgent Care Center and spend my own money to get quicker service and attention.

Before we go any further...it ain't free coverage...look at how much more income tax we pay in Canada than the US. We have a huge slice of our bucks taken out of every dollar we earn. Spending on health care in Canada is not decreasing...it keeps going up all the time and all the money we keep throwing at it is not solving the problems it has. Find out just how good our free coverage is when you end up having something not covered by the insurance plan. Don't know about you but I pay into two different plans and still only get 80% of the bills paid. There are only a couple of groups in Canada that get it really free and I don't qualify for them...so I pay for it in my taxes, in my BC medical plan, my Pharmacare plan, and two different medical coverage plans. I WISH it was free.

These weren't young people without a family doctor, these were mainly old people with nothing better to do than wait in the ER.
I want a system like Australia, where you have to pay a fee to use the hospital/clinic. If your doctor finds your medical treatment necessary, then you are refunded the fee.
With our aging population more has to be done to keep mild cases our of the hospital and into the clinic. Too bad every old person thinks they're going to die when they get the flu and rushes to the ER. |
