Holy crap, it's hard watching them play these days. 3 turnovers already. Including another one yard line screw up. If it's not turnovers, it's dumb penalties and poor decisions.

Wally said the next time someone takes a dumb penalty, he's going to cut that person. Well, looks like he's not going to have much of a team left.

The saying, "When it rains, it pours," is so true with the Lions. Just when you say to yourself it can't get any worse, it does.

Mallett is the only good thing they've got so far. I hope the Lions turn it around.

Didn't live here then but I agree the dome is not a good place to watch a game. Taylor Field has 10x the atmosphere and I'd imagine Empire used to be sort of like that. When I lived in Regina my dad used to take me to every game as a kid, loved it. Probably the best memories I have from back then.

Just saw the Danica Patrick Go Daddy commercial on TSN while watching the game.

Seen the commercial before a few times, but never bothered to follow up. LOL Nothing bad, but I guess putting it on TV is pushing it. Good marketing....

Awesome game. 'Bout time.

Is it just me or are the BC Lions' cheerleaders a little on the young side? Mind you, at my age, anything under 35 is young, but some of those cheerleaders looked to be in the JB range. LOL.

And no, don't post a "too old" pedobear jpg.

Get use to the weather when you live there. I went back for the last grey cup a few years ago though and I totally underdressed. My dad brought out the snow pants and I laughed at him. I'm not even kidding when I thought there was a decent chance I might die from the cold, never been that cold in my life.

That was a good game. Special teams were superior to the riders whereas in all the other games they've lost that battle. I've watched every game this year and been to 1 and it seems that their performance tonight might get them going in the right direction. They play the bombers and toronto next so who knows...

Went to my first game of the season last night with my dad, who's a huge BC Lions fan, and it was pretty fun. Pretty good game for BC in the 2nd half, 1st and 2nd quarters were awful especially the awful turnovers in the first quarter.

Holy shit! Are the BC Lions on crack? The 2 point conversion goes awry and is intercepted by an Argo in the end zone. All the Lions think the play is done and start walking away. The Argo just calmly runs it out and gets some serious yardage. WTF? When we played high school football, we knew to tag the guy. The Lions deserve to lose. They are not playing like a pro team.......... sad.

Everyone seemed to think it was... linesman even marked the spot when they finally brought the guy down around the 40. But... the Lions kicked off right after that, which wouldn't have happened if the play counted.

Yeah that was quite the turnaround. A CFL game is never over till it's over. A few things:

-Buck Pierce is damaged goods. I really don't think he'll last long. Always getting hit and doesn't seem to take it well.

- Geroy Simon has a good game, especially the 1st half.

- O'neal Wilson had some nice catches, especially in the 2nd half on the crossing route on 3rd down.

- And did anyone catch the part where the announcers were promoting the Wendy's hamburger figure about to go out onto the field? You couldn't see much of the hamburger because some hot cheerleaders were right in the way. Rod Black said some awkward lines and then said that he'd "love to eat the hamburger". LOL

Saw that too........ the girls were very nice. I think the BC dance team (right term, Soundy?) is a tad better than the Argo's cheerleading squad. Next up is Winnipeg. I'm so glad the home games are no longer blacked out. At least so far they haven't. Is that because Wendy's and other sponsors are paying a lot, or is it because BC Place is packed with fans?

Soundy
08-15-2009, 08:26 AM
Actually, the last home game WAS blacked out on regular TSN... but for whatever reason, it's never blacked out on TSNHD.

Bobby Ackles was adamant on the home blackouts being a good thing; I think they had a line around 35,000-40,000 attendance to allow it to be lifted. Now that he's gone (RIP) I don't know if that will be changing at all... AFAIK George Chayka is still just "acting President and CEO", I'm not sure if a permanent replacement (or replacements) for Bobby's positions has been named yet. A changing of the guard there might change the blackout policy. I don't think I've ever heard what David Braley's opinion is on the matter.

I know the idea of the local blackout is to encourage people to actually go to the games rather than sit at home and watch them for free, but it's pissed me off a few times in the last couple years, because I was a season ticket holder (couldn't afford to renew this year :() and couldn't make it to some games for various reasons... and couldn't watch it at home either.

correct. it is david braley. he's said multiple times "when we sellout our games, i'll lift the blackout"

man even chicago has lifted their blackout for hockey -- blackouts suck. i too had season tickets last year, and used to go to the occasional home game when i didn't, but when i don't, i want to watch it on tv! i have to use internet streams now to get around it =(

Actually, it's a CFL policy, but Bobby was one of the biggest proponents of it. Hard to argue with a guy with his kind of business smarts, too (if you haven't read it, go check out his book, "The Water Boy").

As it turns out, TSN's current five-year deal with the CFL states that each team must lift the blackout for a total of 25 games over the life of the contract, plus blackouts are automatically lifted if a game is 90% sold out (hard to do in BC Place, not so much for most other venues in the CFL).

I've never followed the Lions (let alone Football in general), but listening to Team1040 all day, reading Bobby Ackles' book, and seeing it on TV has gotten me to follow it somewhat to the point that I may try and catch a Lions game before this season ends.

Zach Champion is still with the Lions right? I suppose he'll be backing up JJ if Lulay and Pierce are unable to dress next game? Any reason why Lulay is/was the 3rd string for the last game even though Champion has been with the lions longer from what I understand?

The club seats are new this season, so I expect it might take a little bit to iron out the wrinkles.

My experience in the past, and that of a lot of people I know, is that the club has been really good about responding to complaints and addressing issues... I'd suggest emailing them and letting them know.

Don Matthews was on TSN and what he said about the all time winningest coach record was kind of weird. He said a few nice things about Wally and then said that Wally got those wins by coaching two teams, while he (Matthews) had to get his wins coaching on many teams (including the CFL Baltimore team - remember that?). He's kind of right. Every time you go to a new team, you have to start all over and build. Not to say Wally had it any easier. One of the hosts on TSN later commented on what Matthews said and downplayed it.

It's really weird that not long ago, Buono was public enemy number one when he was coaching in Calgary. He dissed BC in an interview and things got heated up. I can't remember what it was all about, but it was big news back then.

Almost as bad a Keenan and whatshisnuts coming here after they beat the Canucks in the Stanley Cup finals. The only difference is Buono actually did the club a lot of good.

The counter to that would be it isn't exactly easy to keep a team good for so long either. But either way both are great coaches. Go Lions!

Definitely good to have him here.

Isn't it funny that when tough guys get emotional they really lose it. Good for him.

On a side note (pun intended), it's good to see Kato still on the sidelines. He's been with the team for a long, long time.

Wow talk about a brutal start by the Lions. They started the year really bad and I was patiently waiting for them to turn around as I believe they would but now on their 13th game I'm really starting to get fed up. It's been really hard watching them this year.

They pulled it off. Barely, but a win is a win. Bucko did alright - sacrificed his body. Great catch by Geroy near the end to keep the drive alive.

The two point conversion by the Roughriders could have been stopped if the two Lions players went for the block rather than going for the sack. Gave Durant just enough time to find the receiver. And that catch by Fantuz was pretty darn good. Old man Miles still has the touch, eh?

So after missing two field goals, Whyte redeems himself by getting the last three pointer and the game winner.

To a degree, I can excuse Whyte. He's young, new and bound to make mistakes. What I couldn't excuse was the Lions being on the 1 yard line TWICE and not getting touchdowns from it. To me, that's unacceptable. Yes the Lions won, but it should have been by a larger margin. The offensive line gave Buck little help. Sure, he played like a man possesed, because let's face it, if he didn't, Printers would be suiting up for the next game. The defence bailed us out of what could have been another abysmal performance. At the end of the day though, I'm just happy they won!

You guys think Buck played well? I was at the game midfield up high with a nice view and although he did get loose on a couple runs that were nice and he manned up at the end for the game winning drive.... should have never been in that position to start with!

He consistently threw high to receivers and at one point he put Geroy Simon in a position to get nailed by defender stretching to reach an easy pass that was thrown 3+ feet too high... and he missed a WIDE OPEN receiver downfield for a sure 60yard TD (catch+run)... the guy had no one near him for 15+ yards and somehow Buck led him too far on the throw!! Come on! There were several other misfires too... and a couple other times he threw precision passes into coverage that were caught so go figure?! He forced us to punt from behind our own 20 about 5 times in a row at the end when he couldn't get a first down which eventually led to Saskatchewan getting the tie.

Also, don't forget our only TD pass came while Lulay was playing QB.

IMO We won *despite* of Buck Pierce not because of him. Thank goodness Durant was his typical awful self or this game would have been a route.

Yes it was damn brutal, starting drive we drove right down to the goal line with ease then got stuffed 3 times. We come back again get stuffed twice at the goal line then settled for a field goal. There was also missed field goals one hitting the up rights too.

Paul McCallum kind of whined over the last few weeks about not getting a chance to play. He gets his chance and nearly cost us the game in the end. He did kick a few really nice ones. At least in the back half of the game. I totally forgot about the game, but watched it from about the halfway mark of the third.

Geroy wasn't that pumped after that last catch. Just another day at work for him, I guess. The Edmonton coaches were like wtf just happen?

I think he just ended up on a team with a two really good slotbacks. Andy Fantuz and Ryan Getzlafs brother Chris are both younger and faster then Clermont. I think Getzlaf was sort of a surprise, they brought in Clermont with the intention of him being the #2 Slotback but Getzlaf took the job from him.

Actually the NFL has the most stringent and hardcore blackout policy of any professional sports league. I don't really agree with the blackout policy either but since they don't black out HD I don't really care.

The reason NFL fans don't see blackouts is because most games are sold out all the time.

NFL blackout policy

In the NFL, any broadcaster that has a signal that hits any area within a 75-mile (120 km) radius of an NFL stadium may only broadcast a game if that game is a road game, or if the game sells out 72 hours or more before the start time for the game.[5] If sold out in less than 72 hours, or is close to being sold out by the deadline, the team can sometimes request a time extension. Furthermore, broadcasters with NFL contracts are required to show their markets' road games. Sometimes if a game is very close to selling out, but not quite there, a broadcaster with rights to show the nearly sold out game will buy the remaining tickets (and give them to local charities) so it can broadcast the game (usually, this would involve no more than a few hundred tickets because of cost).

On a sidenote I'd like to thank the Calgary Stampeders for beating the Lions and giving the Riders a home playoff game. Come next week just laydown and give us the WCF at home.

How often do they have that offer?

I would like my mom to have one. For multicultural channels......

Got the HD box in exchange for some computer work for the owner of a pub we service.

TV was from a buddy who's company services the check-in displays at YVR. He got two with the controls all locked out... gave me one on the condition I figure out how to unlock it and then tell him :)

FREE 42" NEC > $$$ 52" Sony ;)

OK, but wasn't there a free box offer at one of the stores at one time? Visions, I think it was. I've been looking for it. They had it around Super Bowl time.

Yes. That would be awesome. Football was meant to be played in fog, mud, snow, and rain.

It would be awesome if the temporary stadium becomes a hit. Not enough seats to make money, but it would be nice. I would actually go to a game or two. Freeze your nuts off. Watch the cheerleaders jump up and down in the cold.

That's right......... I do recall him throwing the ball after a bad snap. This was years ago. He threw it on the numbers and the receiver dropped it. Gotta see plays like that once in a while.

K, Soundy, who was the coach who did razzle dazzle plays like that with the Lions years ago. I think it was the Cardiac Kids era. Short coach, IIRC.

Should have Printers as the starting QB at least which makes for exciting football.

Printers with Lulay and Champion backing him up. Pierce is too busted up, and Jackson is terrible. They've both had their chances this season, and they've proven to be incapable of being a #1 QB. Like I've said to people this season, Pierce can think, but can't throw. Jackson can throw, but can't think. No, they didn't get a ton of help from the O-line, but how many games this season did we see passes thrown too far, or too short, or too high, or too low. And I'm talking about when these guys have had time to throw the ball, not when they were rushed (and even when they were, these guys couldn't scramble if their lives depended on it)
