Might be a noob question, but just wanted to double check with people that are in the know...

If my car uses stock 17x7 +55 offset wheels, is it safe to replace them with wheels that have a lower offset? i.e. +35, +40, +45

I know this probably should go in the wheel/tire tech forum, but i'm looking for a quick response so I can decide whether or not to buy some wheels asap.

yes, but only to a certain extent


for example

my car is 17x7.5 45 offset stock

and im running 18x8.5 31 offset



rim size x x number (the width of the rim) offset pushes the rims further out


if u are going for extreme setup, fenders may required to be rolled. Depending on what car, what do you drive?

Use this Offset Calculator:

From 17x7+55 to 17x7+40:
The clearance from stut housing to the inside of the wheel will be 15mm MORE
The outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 15mm

Then you can check yourself whether there are any clearance issues.

This is key... depending on the car of course.. but if you run too high an offset, and your car is next-to-slammed... you may run into problem if you carry heavy loads or have fat-assed friends.

My stockers were 6" wide rims with a 40mm offset, I ran 8" wide rims with a 35mm offset, then the wheels stuck out too far and rubbed on the rear quarter panel if I had lots of stuff in the trunk or a full load of people. :(

If there's a template available... you can print out the rim clearance and hold it up to your rotor/drum and see what your clearance will be like for the calipers, etc..

measure the horizontal spacing between ur tire and the fender.

then you can guestimate how wide you can go with a stock wheel set up.

yea, the car isn't lowered, and probably won't be... so as long as i don't deviate too much i'll assume it's ok.

best place to ask would be on your car specific forum and visit their tire/wheel section, they usually have a post dedicated to wheel fitments on the specific model
