Yea,
Vanoc is milking the olympics, trying to get the most out of it as possible.
1 Mascot? why not THREE!
x3 profit from olympic crazy people

As for the medals, does anyone else think that they are a misrepresentation of Vancouver? I think it looks retarded.... I mean it says its supposed to represent the mountains and oceans but... it looks like someone placed a hot piece of plastic on a few rocks and it melted resulting in this ugly wavy piece of horse crap.

God, more native designs. Does this city not have enough of an identity to come up with something original?

I guess I just don't see why we need to make the olympics like it's a world aboriginal sports competition or something.

I like them. They must look awesome in person. They must feel good in the hands.

Also, if you're pissed at getting bronze instead of gold, you can remove them from the ribbon and use them as skipping stones.

Somehow, I think they will be a hit at the Olympics. We may not like them, but our tastes are different. We see native art everywhere we go, so it's no wAnder we're sick of that shit. Visitors eat it up, though.

There really isn't much of an identity to this city when you come to think of it, other than the sea and mountains (which many other cities have ). Or the DTES. The city's not even 200 years old. The only real history that you could make anything out of are of the First Nations. But VANOC just tries too hard (or not hard enough) by making everything inspired First Nations and fails... (not saying there's anything wrong with First Nations)

I don't work for VANOC, but after seeing the real press photos, that photo posted looks like it's been altered in order to elicit catcalls of ugliness. The medals are circular, but they are also wavy. They actually look pretty decent and at over a pound each, I'm sure the athletes will appreciate them. The real photos are here: http://www.ctvolympics.ca/news-centre/newsid=17421.html?cid=rsstsn

Weight and uniqueness matter when it comes to medals.

Amritdhari Sikhs allowed to wear kirpans to 2010 Olympic venues

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The RCMP say Amritdhari Sikhs will be allowed to wear kirpans into 2010 Winter Games venues. The 2010 Integrated Security Unit says it's developed guidelines in consultation with the Sikh community. RCMP say with few examples of the kirpan being used as a weapon, they don't expect any additional risk.

Those wearing a kirpan will have to inform venue security. The total length of the ceremonial sword won't be able to exceed seven and a half inches. As well, it will have to be worn under clothing and not be easily accessible.

I just saw them on the evening news. Awesome design. Each medal is unique. No two athletes will have the same shape medal. It's all cut from a wavy stock.

Again, people jumping to conclusions. That pic up top there does not do the medals justice. I guess the photo was trying to capture the waviness of the medals.

We have about 4 months to go before the big show and it's amazing how many 'whiners' are still out there. I routinely check the comment boards on any news items related to the Olympics and people are still complaining about the Olympics. It's getting tired.

I have always been pretty ambivalent about the bid, although I did feel a sense of pride when we won the games back in 2003. I've met people who've been working on the games and I must admit that they're somewhat consumed with their own hype about the Olympics. Sure, there have been some serious cost overruns. But, instead of cursing the games and complaining, you would think that people would start throwing their support behind the games so that we can at least recover some of the costs. Obviously some people have made money as a result of the games - construction companies, realtors, etc. Even if the Olympics were just a cash grab, where were you when the frenzy happened? We got some much needed infrastruture such as the Canada Line and we're going to have a couple of neat facilities afterwards such as the Olympic Oval.

We'll probably have a hangover after the games, but I don't think it'll be as bad as what happened to Montreal after their games. And if the city is going to be really so bad, I'll gladly open the door and show you the way out.

I think those medal actually look pretty good. It is just the angle in the shoit that makes them look bad in the pics. But its way better than just having a traditional medal. Apparently every single medal is going to be unique no two medals alike.
Also all these medals were made from materials that were destined for the landfill so thats another positive.
The medals actually have some real weight to them as well supposed to be about 1.5 lbs

^ well said.

The bottom line are the olympics are coming and these protesters who are against it, the large majority of them are the ones looking for a free handout, the kind that will not ever accept a "hand-up" but just want everything handed to them in a city that the cost of living before and after the olympics is a climate which you must WORK to survive

the same very people whom are complaining that "they" are paying for the games are the same ones lining up for a welfare check

the games are coming and the best thing educated and reasonable citizens of Vancouver/Canada can do is to fully support them and make the games a complete success, which will be the best outcome for everyone.

People complained about expo86 too, and alot of the same arguments, too expensive, too many people, bla bla bla, expo put Vancouver on the map and did only great things for our city

People should be proud that our city is being showcased on a worldwide level and every resident regardless of race, religion, etc should welcome all the visitors and have the forigeners going back home talking of how great the city and the people are in Vancouver and how it was nothing but a great experiance

There is a small, but I suppose significant minority in Vancouver who are anti-development, anti-expansion. They complain about infrastructure projects, they complain about immigration, they complain about events like the Olympics and Expo, they complain about certain companies doing business in Vancouver, etc. In fact, I've sometimes sometimes seen these views expressed on this board. If my family had lived in Kits/Kerrisdale/Shaughnessy for several generations, I would be somewhat relunctant to open 'my city' (as opposed to anyone else's) to change as well. I do also agree that Vancouver is 'paradise.' But, the basic fact is that in order for cities to survive, they must be open to change and growth.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A reward for a job well done or a waste of money? VANOC will pay out millions in bonuses to its workers after the Olympics are over.

The organizing committee has set aside $30 million for the bonuses and if every one of VANOC's 1,300 employees are given an equal share, that would work out to $23,000 per person.

In a statement, VANOC's Dave Cobb says the money is meant to make sure workers stay on until the Olympics end. He points to previous organizing committees dealing with losing a dozen people a month in the last year before the event.

Critics aren't so sure and say $30 million is a steep figure considering the economy and cuts to other programs.

I'm not a big fan of the medals we have for our games.

I am however a big fan of the medals that were handed our for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Everything about the medals has grace and elegance.

I understand all the nods and throwbacks to the Native people but I don't find the medals we have atheistically appealing.

I can say now that I was way too short sighted as I'm sure most anti olympic ppl are. All those nice construction project are expensive but in the end vancouver locals are going to get to use the it most after the olympics. took Canada line to work for the first time yesterday and it is a serious god send to Richmond.

not to mention because of the olympic I have a temp job for the games that pay GOOD with bonus

marc0lishuz posts a story about bonuses being paid out to VANOC workers. The last I heard, VANOC was desperate for temporary workers. Hey, if you're going to be paying for the Olympics 10 years from now, you might as well get a small chunk of that money back, right?

I can understand being upset about the bonuses if you're opposing them on principle alone. But, instead of whining why not join 'em? :)

I genuinely feel bad about some of the store owners who went bankrupt during the construction. But, as the cliche goes, with every death brings a new bloom (or something to that effect.) I bet all of the NIMBYs who were cursing the construction have boycotted the Canada Line and are driving/taking taxis to the airport out of principle, right? ;)

Money back? That's sponsorship money, not tax dollars.

Hey, let's tell VANOC to spend their money like how we tell the govt to do it. Then they can be run just as efficiently as the govt.

Well, tax payers had to pony up money for the bid. Also VANOC has included some tax payer dollars (federal and provincial) as part of its $237 million of "other" revenue. And of course, tax dollars have covered infrastructure upgrades, venue construction, and security detail.

The games will incur expenses on tax payers, one way or another, which is why we've been hammered by catcalls about the Olympics costing too much. VANOC might be within their operating budget when all is set and done, but we're probably going to be left with a debt.

Man, the Vancouver 2010 medals have these all beat.

Did Beijing have Athens make their medals, and reuse their dies? Or perhaps they thought that by putting on a "prettier" ribbon hanger (this is what the Mint calls it) that people wouldn't notice they were exactly the same? Oh well, the Victory Goddess has been used countless times in previous Olympics so I guess you can't blame them for sticking with tradition.

Speaking of the "ribbon hanger" the one on the Syndey medals looks like something you'd find on cheap jewelry - I'd be worried ii would break and I'd lose my medal. Same thing with the Nagano and Athens medals. And the Italians? They're too damn lazy to make a proper hanger so they just wrapped the ribbon around the medal and tied a knot. The 2010 medals have a hanger stamped into the medal rated to 200lbs. It blends so smoothly into the medal that you don't even see it - the ribbon seems to disappear into the medal itself. Much more elegant than simply "tacking on" the hanger as an afterthought (like the other medals seem to have done).

I once got a chance to tour the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) years ago, and learned a hell of a lot. For one, the RCM is recognized world-wide for being one of the best mints in the world. They have patented a lot of the technology used in making coins. Many coins we have here in Canada and take for granted were actually world-firsts and were things people once said were impossible or impractical. They have won numerous awards and recognition for the quality of the coins they produce.

The RCM has made more than 50 billion coins for more than 60 countries worldwide. This is the one thing I didn't know - that foreign governments get the RCM to make their coins used in circulation. Even China had the RCM make their $1,000 gold coin that was used to celebrate the 1997 transfer of Hong Kong back to China. I wonder why they didn't make the coin themselves? It's simple - they lack the technology, something the RCM has in spades.

This is what makes these medals special. They aren't just a piece of quickly stamped out metal. There are a lot of steps used to make them and a lot of challenges they had to overcome. They are easily the most complicated and difficult to manufacture medals of any Olympics. Of course, styling is always subjective, but I bet anyone who actually gets to handle these in person will instantly be able to tell the high level of craftsmanship that went into making them.

All I can say is when 2010 comes downtown vancover and all areas near it will be in chaos. No one is allow to drive/park in downtown unless commerical vehicles. Our skytrian system can not support the massive amount of people that will take the skytrain to work.

Even now going to work during rush hours a lot of people have to wait several trains before they can go on. It is only going to be 10x worse. Not to mention the skytrain always breaks down.

Most medals aren't 100% of one single metal. It's usually a mix of metals and compounds. Apparently, the Vancouver medals have small mix of recycled silicon circuit boards.

The Olympic torch run has been in the news for the last few days. First of all, I'm not a supporter of the Olympics being here, but wow, is this ever one helluva plan - very impressive. I mean instead of bringing the torch to the city and be done with it, it is being taken to every freaking community under the sun. I saw the route just for Vancouver Island. Unbelievable how they criss cross all over the place only to come back to where they started.

This is not going to be cheap. Just the torch alone is a few hundred bucks and there are thousands of them. Then there is the security involved.

I know it is too late to protest. And I'm not really protesting. Just floored by how the planning committee came up with this grand scheme that is going to cost a tremendous amount of money. Hell, with the kind of money it is going to cost, why not give it to the athletes who are competing? They are the ones who really need the support.

Having said that, I hope the protesters stay calm and not cause any problems. It would be pretty embarrassing for our country.

As far as protesters themselves are concerned, they have every right to protest the games even though it is too late. It brings attention to the fact that the games are turning out to be too extravagant and taxing on the general public.

One of the runners of the torch is the young girl who comes on the Telethon every year. The money saved from not running the torch in this fashion could have gone to her cause. Same as Terry Fox's mom who is part of the run. Use the money to fight cancer instead.

I understand the history behind the games and the traditions involved, but this running of the torch should have been simplified. If politicians and dignitaries want to be in the limelight and milk this event for all it's worth, do it some other way. Did Gregor Robertson have to be in Greece? Doesn't he have a city to run?

I can go on and on, and nothing is going to change. These people keep spending tax payers' money as if there was an endless supply of it. Am I going to protest? Nope. I've got better things to do (like spending my time on RS, LOL). Besides, shit happens and there's little you can do but to accept things for what they are.

VANOC is promoting these games as "Canada's games" so a relay across the country is an attempt to get the country excited about the games. If anything, I think the country could use something to get excited about considering the economy, lacklustre politics, and so on.

I absolutely support their right to protest, but I'm tiring of the messages. I honestly think the various messages are now falling on deaf ears.

I think having "free speech zones" is somewhat embarassing. As long as they're not inciting violence, their rights should be respected. But, like others, I'm not listening to them.

True. Watching the news just now, it is very apparent it does bring out a lot of excitement.

Did it have to be so grand?

The run is only one aspect of the games and it can be cost neutral. Most of the stuff has been paid for by corporations and the runners get the opportunity to buy back the torch they carried.

As for protesters. Yeah, their rants do fall on deaf ears.

One of the other things that bothers me a bit is the fact former athletes who won medals for our country are not given the opportunity to attend the games. I don't think they can even buy tickets if they wanted to.

Perhaps one of the corporations that have access to tickets might donate a few to these legends who, in the past, did our country proud by bringing back medals.

You can't please everyone: some complain about the corporatization of the games, but if you don't have corporate sponsors, then more money will be taken from the public coffers and of course we can't have that. As far as I'm concerned, if companies put up big money, then they should be given a share of tickets proportionate to their contribution. And as you suggest, if they're smart, they will give tickets to selected former athletes in order to boost their brands. Former athletes can buy tickets, but as general members of the public (subject to lottery, etc.)

I think statements like these border on hyperbole.

Sure, most of us don't have money to buy condos in the Olympic Village (and considering the shody build quality, I wouldn't want to even if I had the money - trust me, I know as I live in a building with the same developer and contractor.) I can understand a statement like this if you're mentally ill, or below the poverty line and are struggling to make ends meet. But, let's face it - most of us on here are middle class and that likely won't change after the Olympics.

And it's not like we can't use some of the infrastructure we've gotten after the games - Canada Line, upgrade to the 99, Trout Lake centre upgrades, Richmond Olympic Oval, etc. These are public goods that generate social and economic returns.

Again, you are right, but a lot and I mean a lot of people won't be using those facilities. Upper middle class and higher, definitely, but not the middle class and lower. The middle class have less and less disposable income these days. Also, the Canada Line was going to happen one way or another.

Anyway, the hype is here, everybody will get caught up in it, and nobody is going to give a rats ass until it is all over. So I guess it's party on!

Thank god for the corporations. Without them, a lot of the things we take for granted would not be possible. Then again, without the consumer, they wouldn't be around.

Corporations live for events like the Olympics. They come across as heroes to a lot of people, but we have to remember they get so much out of these events.

The next few months are going to be a winfall for the politicians, as well. Time to compose those wonderful, inspiring speeches, and like the saps we are, we'll fall for it, forgetting about all the other terrible things that are going on.

Famous words by Bobby McFerrin:

don't worry........... be happy.

The way I see it is that the rich ppl come in, suck a lot of money out from our system and call it "progress". Once the events r over, they take off & leave us with the bills. Yea, we dun notice it now but we will have to pay for everything in the long run. Tax hike leave most of us with less disposable income. With less money to spend the economy slows. It can come back & bite us in the end.

However, this is the case with locals. Vancouver has been relying on foreign for so long that i'm sure the Olympic spendings are positive in the overall pictures. Some wins and some loses. Sadly, I think locals like us r the ones who lose.

pitt river and golden ears not too bad either,& although not connected to the olympics per say the hwy1 and south fraser perimeter road are next.

along with the new port mann, cape horn interchange, and widened hwy1 these overpasses/on/off ramps will also be replaced
Gilmore;
Willingdon;
Douglas (new on/off ramp for commercial vehicles only);
Sprott;
Kensington;
Gaglardi;
Brunette;

cape horn interchange (looks huge but actually super compact compared to similar stuff in the us)

I've already benefited from the Olympics :D There are a number of celebrities that will be coming in at the same time because they have sponsorship commitments to various corporations that are official Olympic sponsors and they will all need private security and transport. In the last month, I've already signed 4 new contracts and am in the process of locking down 2 more now.

The only con for me is that I spend all my time downtown pretty much so traffic and getting around will be chaos and filming on the TV production I work on will be interrupted because the city isn't granting permits during the Olympics, but other than that it'll be a good thing for me, plus I'm looking forward to all the parties

It is a joke that the tickets for the olympics were sold out in 7 minutes..
100000 gone .Madonna would be impressed on the ability of the ticket agents she took 10 minutes for 51000. Hard to believe the Games were meant for the people of BC.

VANOC: Olympic ticket website not working
No timeline for repairs

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The last wave of Olympic tickets went on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday, but website problems are making things difficult for ticket buyers. VANOC says it is having technical problems with its website.

There's no word on what the problems could be, but they hope to have the site running smoothly soon. One News1130 listener e-mailed us to say he can't even log on.

Mike phoned News1130 and tells us he's had nothing but problems all morning. "It's been a nightmare. Forty-five minutes to get on the website and then once I was on I thought, 'OK, I'm going to buy tickets,' and then there was no link to actually buy the tickets. It kept taking me back to a screen that said 'Phase Two tickets go on sale in June."

Mike adds it's a major issue for people who've been waiting months to get their tickets and it's nothing but frustrating.

To try and get your tickets click here . News1130 is the official radio station of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

A:

Each heading indicates the total number of sessions remaining for that sport; sessions listed under each are no longer available or are down to single seats only.

So, as example...

Ice Hockey (46 sessions left)
IH009 - Men's Prelim CAN-NOR
IH019 - Men's Prelim SUI-CAN
IH031 - Men's Prelim CAN-USA
IH050 - Men's Gold Medal

I read this as -- tickets are available for all hockey except preliminary rds with Canada and the Gold Medal game. Kind of makes sense -- the first tickets to go were the Canada Hockey games plus the Figure Skating Free skates.

Looks like there are still tix available for the ceremonies though, which is cool... how much longer I'm willing to wait is a diff story though.

have u guys heard of "Pin trading"? I only found out about this recently and was told that its very popular during the olympics. Personally I think its fucking retarded and just another money grab. Was going through this pamphlet we have at work and theres like 250 of these pins and each one sells for $10. Now think of all the olympic-fanatics that are going to blow their money on this! lol

I'm pro-olympics and look forward to them, what are your guys' thoughts on "pin trading" and have you heard about it before? :S

Buddies and I all entered the lottery. I didn't get any but my buddies each scored 20 tickets. It was something along the lines of $1500-2000 each. Of course it depends on the events in the package.

Just got this in my email:

The Ceremonies Cast Team is looking for a few more MALE volunteer performers. Do you know any guys who would like a chance to be part of the show? Give the gift of Olympic participation this holiday season - refer a guy! Our next (and hopefully last) audition for men only will be Wednesday evening. We still have a few unfilled spots in a variety of roles. Some have rehearsals starting immediately; some don't start until January. If you know any guys 17 or older who might enjoy being a volunteer performer, please have them register online at http://ceremonies2010.com/register and use the Source Code: RD2010. We will call selected applicants by Tuesday to schedule them for a simple and quick audition Wednesday night between 7:30 and 9pm. Please note that most available roles do not require dance skills: athleticism and general movement ability are all that is needed.

Thanks,The Ceremonies Cast TeamCast Hotline: 778-331-3300

Rehearsal schedules are pretty intense, usually 2x a week, especially starting mid-January. Most of my schedule just says PM or All Day, lol!

Just thought I'd bump this thread since the olympics are less than two weeks away. Even though I was not too fond of the olympics coming to vancouver before, I am kind of excited now. I think it'll be pretty crazy in vancouver when Canada wins the hockey events. lol

Aside from hockey I plan to watch the half pipe events as well. Hopefully catch some other events as well.

Most importantly 2 weeks off of school. Can't wait:thumbsup:

^^^ like 80% of the tickets on the fan2fan site are for face value

People are getting afraid they'll be stuck with them, and don't feel like hanging out infront of venues to scalp them last minute.

I lowered the price of all my remaining tickets to just over face value on the Fan-2-Fan site and they are all sold now. The little bit of profit I made will pay for the 4 GER-BLR men's hockey tickets I cannot get rid of.

For all you guys with iPhones and iPod Touch, if you're wondering if there's an app for the Olympic events, of course there is! (http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/2010guide-vancouver-2010-olympic/id350892863?mt=8)

Loaded it on my Touch so I can quickly look up what's going on when my friends from out of town come to visit. Just saw it today on iTunes and installed it so I haven't really had a chance to play around with it.

Dang, I just found a section out of citycaucus

"Entrance to the Holland Heineken House is free of charge, but ID must be shown. Minors (those less than 19 years) should be accompanied by an adult at all times"

Maybe not?
I wonder if I show my employee card from CHP if they'll accept it...

Don't know if this has been asked already, but are events being streamed online by the big broadcasters, such as the opening ceremonies, and most gold medal events?

Was at Ozone with TRD604, darthchilli and Kardboard. Place was packed to the tits with people. The "security check" was lame and there really wasn't anything bad about it from my end.

I walked past Tamara Taggert and Pamela Martin as they were leaving the Ozone with a giant bag of popcorn. I assume they were leaving cause they finished wrapping up the news from there.

Holland Heineken House looks pretty good. The main issue is parking. It's HORRIBLE down there. I parked at Richmond Center (spent 10 minutes circling for parking) and walked across to Ozone. Leaving Richmond Center was a mess so be prepared for that.

Heineken house was closed or something? Nobody going in or out.

Parking sucks crap. If you are going to go, go past 8pm, when all parking becomes free.

Watched Rick Hansen whip by with the torch. :D

Since I never went to the opening ceremony rehearsal, I don't feel bound to keep secret what I found out about it...

Don't read it if you want to be surprised!

1. Everyone must wear white, they will be using the crowd as a projector screen.

2. Everyone might be given a flashlight, not sure if they will have wireless control to create patterns in the crowd.

3. Although Cirque du Soleil is not producing the event, there will still be Circus performers from Montreal.

4. There will be fake snow falling from the ceiling as well as paper maple leaves falling (I suspect a presentation depicting the seasons).

5. The ceremony does have elements of the Host 4 Nations and Totem poles will rise from the ground.

6. There will be a ski-jumper or acrobatic circus performer mimicking a ski-jump through the rings of an olympic logo.

7. One of the circus performers will be "running" (attached to wires) through fields on the prairies then rise above the ground.

8. The entire floor is white and looks like ice, projectors will show the ice "cracking" and whales will appear beneath the surface.

9. There will be projections of northern lights and other images, sources weren't clear weather or not they were on the domed roof of the stadium or on hanging screens.

10. Sarah Mclachlan is a confirmed singer, but there was a stand in for the final performer who will be a surprise come Friday.

Went to Casa Italian at Roundhouse today for a sneak preview. Lots of hot italians walking around! Opens tomorrow. Wine and food tasting are for like..a dollar or something?

My only concern was Casa Italia were giving away cheese knifes...don't know if that's a smart idea. It may be small..but kinda dangerous if you ask me.

Does anybody have any info on the road closures for Ahhhhhnold's torch run Friday morning?

He's suppose to be at Prospect Point in Stanley Park @ 6:21am Friday. I want to head over there to catch him and then head off to work but I don't know how traffic is like.
