or worst tear your inner fender wall into crap... and rip up any lines you have in the vicinity.
If you are picking between chains or winter tires.. winter tires hands down.. chains are a pain in the ass to put on and take off.
yup
at best the fall off on the outside
at worst, they fall off inside and get tangled up around your axles

looked at the cable chains that lordco is selling.
the box says "do not exceed 30 mph"
would driving over that make the cables snap?
yes.
i remember awhile back looking at something different... it was from japan, goes on like tire chains, but was a rubber mesh instead of metal links, and was studded, and it was speed rated for city speeds. i have to look for it online again...

beside it said you cannot go over 50-60km, so that means you cant drive on the hwy? pfff

THEN I went and fell in love with a 2010 GTI Mk6 which comes with 225/45R17 wheels and tires. With a 5x112 pattern. And signed for the car.

Well, I finally got them on tonight... Man feels so weird driving with narrower tires (going from 205/55 to 185/65)... so much more sidewall flex too when doing sharp turns.
Road noise isn't very noticeable, but I do feel more road vibrations.

this is my first season driving with snow tires, and they are so very different compared to my summers. The grip is lower, the sidewall is so flexible, tight turns make screeching noises on those painted lines on the floor, and a lot more vibrations on the highway.

You don't need snow on the ground to take advantage of winter tires though. It is cold enough for the winter tire compound to outperform the all season / summer equivalent.

but if there is no snow the snow tires will still wear out like a mofo due to direct compact with the ground

12-02-2009, 05:03 PM
Err no it won't, the tire temp won't get that high considering ambient temperature is hovering <3C. Winter tires wear will be the same as normal tire where when the normal tire is at say 20C. It is only stupid when you drive you winter tire when air temp is more than 10C.. last I check, we haven't been like that ever since the weather cleared.

so whats killing the snow tires?
high temperature or rough surface? since snow tires are extremely soft compare to summer/all season compounds
thought if we were in Ontario or sth where there is constantly snow patch on the ground the snow tires will last like forever (exagerate of course)
godwin
12-02-2009, 05:23 PM
You are over simplistic with most of your asinine comments.
Tire adhesion is affected by a multitude of factors, but most importantly it is the tire compound. The tire compound's properties like wear property and hysteresis changes over the temperature range.
Heat from tire depends on the hysteresis of the tire compound.
Snow tires are only mildly softer when it is at non winter temperature, when temperature drops it is as hard as any all season tire during non winter months.

If you do quick corners/turns. Drive too fast on the highway/street. Drive on roads that have a consistent amount of potholes bumps etc etc. All these factors will make your tires wear out faster. Drive normally, no sudden stops/braking will help in reducing tire wear.

My door settings are front/33 rear/32 so my winters are set at front/35 rear/34 'cold readings'

summer time i normally do 35psi all around
now the winter comes, even tho different tires i would appreciate my tires to be a bit less inflate or at least to stock recommandation. Therefore i will stick with 32psi all around. More psi, less grip, but less wear on your tires.

Putting tires on should take about 30 minutes (it is very useful to have deep sockets and extensions). Torque wrench is recommended, however I assume your car have studs, I rather go a bit on the loose side (ie not stomping on the tire wrench), vs over tighten it and snap the studs off. If you do hand tighten it, drive slowly down a street and do a final check to tighten the studs some more.
In my book, a non calibrated wrench / chinese 10 bucks torque wrench is just as useful as not using a torque wrench.
If you don't have the patience take it to a shop, but most shops at this time of the year just impact wrench the rims.

Most shop will just use an impact wrench, and that's tighter than I can get with elbow grease. There's times I have to stand on a breaker bar to loosen a bolt that a shop installed.
I'm a big kid (6'2" 220 lbs and workout) so unless you're the size of a NFL linebacker, I doubt you're going to over-tighten.
My ROT is tighten till it feels snug, yet not so tight than I cannot tighten any further. Years of changing tires has given me a good feel for it.
Definitely recheck after driving a few times. I keep my lug wrench in the car to do this.

if the tightening of the lug nuts is a big concern to you, simply call up a midas dealership and get a free brake inspection done for all wheels.. most likely they will take off your wheels and upon putting them back on... they will use a impact gun and/or torque wrench.

All shops this time of the year will have to use impact wrenches to secure the wheel, you just hope that they use torque limiting sockiets.
this is the scary part. they'll blast your lugs to hell and you'll be way worse off than when you started haha

Wouldnt it just be easier to buy a torque wrench than go to midas and get them to use their impact gun?

Varies by manufacturers and models:
eg BMW 3 series is 95 ft lb, X5 is 98 ft lb, I think Hondas are in the 80s
It depends on the manufacturers who might use:
Lugs / Studs
Different size of Lugs / Studs
Different bolt battery
Different general material of the wheel
A proper calibrated torque wrench say a Toptul one is at least $100+. For Toptul go to this thread and ask: http://www.revscene.net/forums/toptul-t486771.html?p=6715947#post6715947 You probably want a wrench that can do 80 ft lb+
Wouldnt it just be easier to buy a torque wrench than go to midas and get them to use their impact gun?
Also how many lbs do we torque to for OE lugs? or does it vary by manufacturer?

well...i think MIDAS is pretty good.. i can vouch for the main st/terminal location. I took off my front wheel to test fit a 16" rim for winter tire purposes and then i put my stock back on. I called up Midas and asked if they could 'retorque' my wheels...they did it complimentarily and with a torque wrench.

Not to doubt them, but just curious: Did you give them a torque value to torque to, or they just randomly select a value or they referenced Acura's tech manual? I have yet to see torque value put on any owners manual.

What are tire pressure are you guys using? I installed my winters last night, and they were severely underinflated. I went to the company's website, but no info on correct tire pressure, only max. pressure. My owner's manual says to use 33/31 (F/R) for OEM tires, but my winters are one size smaller (15"), should I use similar pressure? They are Yokohama AVS Winter V901
godwin
12-07-2009, 01:52 PM
In that case, you would use the company given value as the ceiling value. I would use the floor value from the manufacturer. Make some increments of 5psi and then experiment. Find one that works for you. (Yes it is much more easier to experiment if you have your own compresor).
I tend to fill tires a bit higher than the recommended value, but under the maximum rating. Since my cars don't get driven a lot, they tend to settle after a while.

They probably use Torsion/torque sticks. Although those do lose their torque values after a prolonged use.

I used a torque wrench to tighten mine. Should have been a 30 min job...instead took me over an hour b/c two of my wheels were stuck to the hub!!! It took some brute force to get them off, any easier ways to get a stuck tire off the hub? After I yanked off the tires, the hub was little lower (I had to jack it up a little more to put the new tire back on!)...I'm hoping it's just my crappy jack (the one used for the spare tire that comes with the car) and that I didn't bend the suspension...I drove the car and it feels fine...

^ Spray WD40 inside the lug holes.(Be careful when you're spraying the rears). Let it soak in and turn it around slowly and let it soak again. Use a Rubber mallet or a peice of wood and a hammer to hammer the inside of the wheel. The wheel should come off as you keep hammering it evenly. Once you get it off, clean the hub area (it's most likely rusted).

1. You used brute force when the car was only on a jack? Not smart.
2. Get a jack stand and a rubber mallet. I haven't met a rim/rotor that won't come off with a good hit from a rubber mallet.
3. Your hub was probably lower cause the jack shifted during "brute force". Again, don't do this while only using a jack.

Over-torquing is bad because it can potentially can strip a lug nut or hub, and stretch or break a stud or bolt. In the times of my old vehicle, and no torque wrench, I would just tighten it as hard as i could, but I wouldn't stand on it. Standing on the wrench is the classic method of removing stubborn lugs.

It is stuck due to metal and metal contact.. you should able to tap the tires off with a dead blow / plastic hammer. Tap on the rubber for maximum torque.
The whole point is to clean the contact points, that is the wheel bearing area (the extrusion where the wheel rest on, use a scotchpad for that). The wheel carrier.. after everything is clean, spray both sides (wheel and wheel carrier) with lithium grease and wipe off. If your car uses nuts, use a toothbrush to clean the threads too.
If you are using alloy wheels, remember to wax the wheels before you put them on so brake dust won't stick on (when you wash and change tire). I use so left over teflon turtle wax for that.. seems to work well.
I used a torque wrench to tighten mine. Should have been a 30 min job...instead took me over an hour b/c two of my wheels were stuck to the hub!!! usually mazda's, especially mazda 3's wheels are stuck to the hub. some of them i use a big ass hammer to whack it off (usually the edge of the rim, never the tire or else the bead wire might break and there will be lumps)

torque on the lugs depends on the car.

wow... tonight was a bit of a quick test of the general altimax arctics... although we had maybe 10cm?... took the TL from north delta all through guildford/fleetwood side streets, back alleys and did not get stuck once at all...the occassional slippage when i got too cocky but quite impressed... if you dont have winter tires yet, the generals are a solid choice.

Yah some people think just because they got winter tires they are indestructible on the roads. You still have to be really careful, especially on smaller streets where it gets really icy. I have had ABS kick in a few times already over the past few days, even while going super slow down my road.

Same as OEM, but just remember that colder temperatures = lower tire pressures so make sure the tires are topped off!

so after one cold winter suddenly everyone figures that they need snow tires.
and then this year, it's gonna be all wet snow and nothing else.
Should have bought stocks to tire makers around summer this year.

How are you guys storing your all-seasons/summers? I have mine on a vertical tire stand from CT in my garage. But then I've heard that the tires should be placed in bags, as airtight as possible. Does it actually matter how they're stored for a 4 month period?

^ No, Just stack them Vertically. Do not let the tires touch Cement/concrete for a long time. I made a wooden platform so I just stacked them up vertically.

so the tires and wheels are suspended and apart from each other. Is it necessary to deflate the tires, or just keep them at ~30 psi?

Remember clean and wax your tires before you store them !! Use extra coating of wax at hard to reach places so when you have remounted you won't get brake dust in hard to reach places.
Get the Michelin Tire Totes, $8 a pair from a place called MFT at the Langley side of GEB.

Does it actually matter how they're stored for a 4 month period? My understanding is that you're to minimize oxygen contact as that it hardens the compounds, just like rubber. But we're talking about YEARS/DECADES here, so 4 months is nothing. Personally I didn't bother with bags. You'll wear out and replace your tires way before this will become an issue. However, if you were leaving them out in direct sunlight, I'd move them to the shade.
^ No, Just stack them Vertically. Do not let the tires touch Cement/concrete for a long time. I made a wooden platform so I just stacked them up vertically. Why can't tires touch concrete for extended periods? This is news to me.
I have mine stacked, but that's just because it's the most space-efficient. The other reason in theory is to prevent flat spots if you store them upright, but the weight of a rim + tire is nothing compared to the weight on them when they're mounted on your car and you're parked. Again, more overkill.

I use the tire totes from Canadian Tire and the cardboard cutouts from the TireRack when they shipped my wheels so as not to scuff the faces.
I washed my wheels and dried them and also put a coat of wax before "bagging" them up in the totes and they are stored in "guest room" as there's no room in the garage.

^^ You can't go wrong by having one. With that said, I finally got one this year when I found a good one on sale.
Never had a wheel come off on me in the last 12 years. Everyone's all worried about getting torque right down to spec. While it'd be nice to get it bang-on, everything has a design factor/allowance built in. Buy one if it fits your budget. :)
