this is also a message for all you other guys, get ur summers off the road! and dont be causing accidents all over the place!

^My friend was wondering whether to get steelies or alloys on his TL, I told him about the wheels on my Z that worked out to be around $100 each for the 17s from our Sponsor in North Van which isn't much more than buying ugly steelies.

What do you guys think?

16" steelies should run about $60 each. Not sure how much 17" steelies go for. I guess it depends on his budget.

if you're planning on having to drive in the dead of winter (if we get snow anyway), get them winters on.

I don't care if you have AWD or not. Summer tires do not belong on the road during winter, even if there's no snow on the ground. Summer tires are only effective at certain temperature ranges, and you'll barely see those ranges during winter.

Besides, AWD only helps you get going. It will do shit all for turning and braking in the snow.

Last week they forecast snow for this weekend, and look - no snow.

Its forecast to be +6C, so any snow will melt as son as it hits the pavement.

Regardless its time to get off the summers. At those temps summer rubber turns into hockey pucks.

Sooo... when is the city of vancouver going to salt the road? I'm always paranoid when there is salt on the road. Salt -> rust especially when it's too cold to wash cars.

FAIL.

My car is lowered and I drove it around Ottawa for 6 winters on good winter tires. Yes you cannot go out where there has been a huge dump of snow, yet wait a few hours for the plows to clear the streets and you're fine.

For a lowered car that is running more camber, winters are even more important.

You guys do know that winter tires aren't just for snowy weather right?
The rubber compound used to make winter tires stay soft in cold temperatures unlike summer tires which are rock hard and don't grip. Technically you're supposed to switch to winter tires when outside temperatures get down to 7*C.

^My friend was wondering whether to get steelies or alloys on his TL, I told him about the wheels on my Z that worked out to be around $100 each for the 17s from our Sponsor in North Van which isn't much more than buying ugly steelies.

What do you guys think?

^ it's called Skills!!! HAHA JK

Okay, on a serious note. I bought the automotive grade pin-stripping from Crappy-tire. It's really not that hard. As long as the temperature isn't that cold the adhesive should stick on. When you put the vinyl tape on, just slowly mold it on to whatever you want. Use your fingers to work the tape(back and fourth) a couple times. Let it rest/cure for a couple hours before putting it on the car etc etc. Oh and one more thing, be sure to clean the surface with some alcohol to get rid of any debris, dirt etc etc.

Ottawa is very humid, its why Ottawa gets so much snow. People that visit Ottawa are always surprised to find this out, they assume a land-locked city wouldn't be so humid.

On another note, the Bridgestone WS60's on the CSX are much quieter than the Goodyear RS-A's that came as stock tires, which is faintly amusing and quite indicative of the quality of the RS-A's.

The Civic even comes with Michelin MXV4's as stock, which is a much better tire.

if your smart, you would be either spend a little to get winter tires or get those bbks off and get your stock brakes + stock wheels/snow tires on

if you have money for bbk you have money for winters. I will never jeopardize my own safety let alone safety of the others around me cause I'm cheap.

and while your at it, why don't you lower your car 1st before getting bbk? It's proven that bbk don't help much. A good set of high end brake pads + rotors at stock size would be very good unless your tracking..... and I doubt you do that

First off, I got the BBk back in spring when I HAD a job but thanks to the recession i don't have one anymore and I don't have anymore money to spend on my car... I barely had enough for the new tires and they are on the cheap end of all season tires.

second, I don't have my stock calipers anymore because I sold them to pay for the bbk

third, I tried the stock size brake discs with race pads but they started fading after a few laps on Mission raceway and I didn't feel safe which is why i went with the bbk, and yes my car is lowered on Tein Htechs (which only lower by 1") and I didn't want to go lower because of suspension geometry, daily ride comfort, and hitting the underside on speed bumps

fourth, please don't assume things about me when u don't know me, I do track it

well, ill play devil's advocate here.

if u have good tread on all seasons and drive smart u dont really need winter tires in Vancouver weather.
I say that because, i have lived in Quebec and Toronto most of my life. And i have never had winter tires. yes, snow does get cleared faster than Vancouver, but regardless, i have driven in harsher winters (both temp wise and snow wise) than i have has ever seen here in Vancouver.

I did buy winter tires because my all seasons had not enough tread on them, and i got a good deal on winter tires.

Just make sure u have enough tread and know the limits to which u can push ur all seasons, and ull be ok.

ps. and put a bag or 2 of salt in the trunk. that always helps
plus being the olympics and all, i think they will do a better job this year clearing the roads...(i hope)

Sliding and spinning all over the place, so last year was an exception. my buddy was driving around in his Azenis with LSD and never had a problem, crazy guy. Until the bigggg snow fall comes down of course

otherwise with light snow normally all season should be able to handle it, without driving like a retard of course.

Im so fed up with all season tires fuck, in the rain off the line i'd be spinning till the 4th gear, cornering i'd be sliding sideways lol

this of course is with a heavy foot, sometimes im just lazy shifting at 3k u know

cant wait to burn off these stupid all season (and i just got it march 09), summer/winter combo it is next year

This is getting ridiculous. I have a total of 28 tires in storage or running around, and there's 16 tires sitting in my garage.

I'm turning into a tire depot! :haha:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a8/roastpuff/IMAGE_025.jpg

On another note, the Bridgestone WS60's on the CSX are much quieter than the Goodyear RS-A's that came as stock tires, which is faintly amusing and quite indicative of the quality of the RS-A's.

The Civic even comes with Michelin MXV4's as stock, which is a much better tire.

Bridgestone WS60 are excellent tires for the money, not the cheapest yet cheaper than other snow tires, Michellein, pirellei, Contiental etc..

sold quite a few..

 2nd popular ones would probably be the General artic altimax, had them before they were alrit. Cant compare with the continental Vikings that i have now tho

ps. and put a bag or 2 of salt in the trunk. that always helps
plus being the olympics and all, i think they will do a better job this year clearing the roads...(i hope)

sand or kitty litter are also options. i saw a tow truck driver using kitty litter for traction to pull a car out of a ditch last year.

I bought snow tires simply because it's illegal to run around in the snow on Kumho Ecsta MX and if I am going to get a separate set of wheels anyway they might as well be wrapped in winter tires.

Why do you have to buy at Costco? It's so expensive there... check out our sponsors!

The PA3 is better, obviously, since it's newer. What car? The Xi2 is supposed to be very good as well.

get everything at www.discounttiredirect.com
i got my 4 Hankook Ipikes there for only $200USD

or better yet, drive down to portland and get a set there!

shops in vancouver charge $20 per wheel to mount...
in the states, it's FREE! (at walmart) and if you go to tire shops it's under $10!!! AND they throw in a free alignment!

i got a super deal last time i went to portland on some all-seasons, it would cost $900-1000 if i bought it locally with mounting and taxes.

Well let's put it this way - going to sponsors like Advance Motorsport will be cheaper than Costco, and they have more of a selection. Costco listed tires for $200+ for me (Michelin X-Ice Xi2) and Advance got me WS60's more than $50 cheaper - and could've gotten me the same Michelin's for that price if I wanted them to. Plus Costco has very small selection, pretty much Michelin and BFGoodrich only. Snow tires are going to be expensive, no matter what size, but Michelins tend to be the most expensive (besides Nokian) because they're seen as "premium" tires. I'm a big fan of Bridgestone myself... comparable performance for cheaper.

Plus they're more likely to not scratch your wheels when mounting because they're used to bigger wheels/nicer wheels.

Heck if you want to do it the US (Tire Rack or Discount Tire Direct) will be even cheaper, if you ship to Point Roberts.

Check if steelies will fit your brakes first. If not, then go OEM or aftermarket for alloys.

Man, finding a proper set of staggered tires for your car in 17" is hard, haha. Tire Rack has no matching sets... You could probably mix and match and come out OK, or go narrower for all four - the second method is preferred.

!SG
11-19-2009, 09:30 AM
why go staggered?

chances are, u will wear out either the front or the rear pair faster especially for snow tires.

if u get all 4 the same, u can at least rotate the tires to even the wear.

roastpuff
11-19-2009, 09:37 AM
Just going by Tire Rack's recommended sizes, which wanted to go staggered. I can find tires (for kaycee) in either sizes in sets of 4 just fine, but not both due to no models being made in both sizes.

Which is why I recommended going narrower (225/50R17).

I'm looking for winter tires and rims but i really have no idea what im looking for. All I know about winter tires is that there are some "popular" ones like X-ice and Blizzak.

So far I've found rims: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/1/TiresRims/RimsWinter/PRDOVR~0095956P/16-in.%2BMulti-fit%2BSteel%2BRim.jsp

What kind of winter tires should i be getting? Where is the best/cheapest place to get them? Tirerack or local. If so from Tirerack, how much will it cost in taxes and fees to bring it over the border on a day trip.

My stock wheels/tires: 16" x 6.5", 205/55R16

TIA

sonick
11-19-2009, 10:08 AM
Xice and Blizzak are good mid-end tires. General Altimax Arctic and Goodyear Nordic are popular for the more affordable lower end tires.

The hankook iPike are supposedly very good according to my tire mounting guy.

roastpuff
11-19-2009, 10:21 AM
Tire Rack/Discount Tire will be cheaper... if you ship to Point Roberts, you just pay GST and PST on the price not including shipping.

Right now the General Altimax Arctic is $78 each from Tire Rack, it's quite a good tire from what I hear. The new Continental Extreme Winter Contact is $90, and it's supposed to be better than the Xi2 and WS60.

yesterday was the 1st time in my life using winter tires (yokohama iceguard) and WOW, i cannot believe the difference in grip.

my beater (1990 EF Dx hatch) has no p/s and just turning the wheel on the spot was super easy. previous to this i had falken ziex ze912's on the car (with which i was able to get thru last year's winter) and i never realised how poor the traction became with the colder weather. the drive to and from work yesterday was awesome. the car felt like it was pulling (despite being a stock D15B lol).

Haha. My GF said the same thing after I installed her snowies on Tuesday. She could feel the water evacuating through the tread on road grooves w/ 2" of water, instead of feeling like she was skimming/hydroplaning over it. It's her first time with dedicated snowies also.

Her stock tire size is 205/55/16 and I got her into a narrower 15" with more sidewall. Her only complaint was the noticeable sidewall flex compared to the 55 series. She drives fairly hard so I made a point of taking her out late at night, so she could push the car a bit and see how the new rubber reacted differently. Better to know the limits beforehand.

very evident today. side by side with an mpv van. red light turns red, we both slam on the brakes, i brake before the line, the mpv van slides thru the intersection a car length past the cross walk on the other side of the intersection.

she then decided to reverse back thru that 1 car length, thru the intersection, all the way back beside my car... hahahaha burning tire rubber sure smells distinct.

meh i have to rant.

same day, i was heading westbound on marine to get to the airport around 6pm... on the westbound lane on marine in front of the kia dealership the water was so deep i was creating a bow wake in front of me :o ... things were made worse by a hydrolocked dodge caravan on the shoulder lane caused traffic to bottleneck, which was sort of a good thing because it started off looking like a deceptive shallow puddle and before you know it it was getting really deep. if you were going at least 50kmh i'm sure you would have done a lot of damage (ie. the caravan). traffic was making slow progress until this asshat in a green 4dr civic went full tilt through the lake because he wanted to get around the caravan in the shoulder lane and beat us off the traffic light at the last intersection... well, by the time i had finally reached cambie, the civic was dead at the stoplight in the center lane, causing more gridlock. asshole :flamemad:

Blizzak are good mid-end tires. .

Blizzak is a general brand.. there are tons of sub models eg DM, LM, MZ, WS.. They are not all the same. I would say ones like MZ would perform poorly compared with the silica based newer model tires like the Altimax.

All winter tires perform roughly the same at their stated speed range... the difference is when there is water mixed in, and when people wants to be jackasses.. the more expensive and recent version the tires, the larger of those envelopes are and in the end saving more people.

Having snow tires, still don't mean you can drive like it is a nice summer day when there is 5" of snow on the road.
