Winter has come early to Grouse Mountain.

The resort is kicking off its ski season this afternoon, a full month earlier than last year.

Spokesman William Mbaho says while the mountain won't be fully operational today, Paradise Bowl will be open much earlier than usual.

He says Mother Nature is bringing favourable conditions and it's going to be a "momentous" winter season.

Road conditions were great. No snow (well, almost no snow) in the village, but plenty on both mountains. It's quite cold here though, and many of the restaurants are still closed with notices on the doors saying they will open on the 26th.

went on saturday, got there around 9:20 and lined up for about 5-10 minutes to grab tickets, first two runs didn't have to wait too long for the lift but by around 10:15 there was tons of people

conditions weren't that great, it was snowing so limited visibility and it was not soft snow it was icy snow that was coming down. but this saturday looks like clear skies!

how's the conditions today?

cypress was good, mix of icy patches and soft snow. A few runs had a lot of bare spots with rocks though, rainbow was especially terrible, horizon had some shitty spots especially after it merges w/ humpty dumpty. But it was snowing pretty good when i left so hopefully theyll have a few more cm tomorrow.

Lion chair got pretty busy by around 2-3 the raven ridge and eagle express both only had one run open (panorama and crazy raven) although there were no line ups at either.

I would also suggest for anyone going to cypress to get the ski card from a bell store, it only costs about $2 more than a peak period lift ticket ($55), but your first lift ticket is free so its practically free, and after that you get 20% off for the rest of the season.

Quick questions about the skicard.

Does it have my name on it?

If so, can I buy myself and a friend discount lift tickets on the same day? Or is it limited to 1 discount lift ticket perday (ie. 1 ticket for me).

If no, same question as above, is there a limit on how many discount lift tickets per day?

zero_one

but i will be down at portland for the weekend...fuck! and school starts next monday. sigh.

anyways, how's the raven chairlift? the blacks on that end is the best part of the mountain. there are no one lining up for the chairlift, EVER.

but the shitty part is that it's below the parking lot, so it get icy easily. there's this one time, the chairlift closed and i had to hike 45 mins back up. by the end of it, my friend unzipped his jacket, and there were smoke coming out. LOL

The Skicard is only good for the person who bought it. So no, you can't buy 1 skicard and get yourself and a bunch of friends discount tickets. Same goes for the Whistler/Blackcomb Edge card.

Grouse is more accessible, but more limiting than Cypress. Grouse has a way better view of the city. Anyone up at Cypress today? Says raining at base but snowing midmountain and up. Thinking of going at for night owl.

i went up to grouse the other day for night ski, by the time my gf got her rental. They told us it will be closed in half hour.

please note the same day cypress was closed as well. Just be careful they will close early on you depending on the condition and the crowd. if i were you i will try to go there in the day time, simply the weather is not at the best right now.

do you know why ?! thats lame
isnt grouse paid parking ive never been there

Parking restrictions are for the olympics and prepping everyone for the gong show that will be the end result.

http://cypressmountain.com/alpine-parking-map

Lot 3 is where you used to be able to park if you got there relatively early or when the first rush of people left.

Highway lot is where you went if you got there late...now everyone is going to have to park there.

One long ass walk

Conditions, the runs were decent, the sides were wet and sticky though, so even though they lookd like fresh pow, it was stiiiicky. Alright if you were on a blue/black as they were steeper, but at times they were near flats and so it sucked to suddenly slow down.

I had a lot of fun on their black runs, as there were cliffs & drops galore.

I'll see some of you on the slopes tomorrow ;)
Spectre, how is the driving road up there? does it look like I'll die without winter tires? (I know it's mandatory)

I wish it was open sooner than 10.

Just came back from whistler. I gotto whistler at around 8 to find a HUGE lineup for the village parking lot so we went up to the upper village lot by the excalibre gondola. As soon as we got there the lot was full 5 minutes later. To give you an idea of how bad it was. A friend of mine wasn't lucky enough to get a parking spot in any of the public lots so he paid 35$ to park somewhere around the village. Conditions were good until the fog rolled in. Visibilty was maybe 10-15meters. Also the mcdonalds in Squamish was packed at 730 when we left.

Check the website before going. It will tell you if winter tires and/or chains required.

^ Wondering the same thing too. I'm good, but my friend's car isn't. Wondering if there are any road checks etc.GOOD WINTER TIRES OR 4X4 ARE MANDATORY ON THE CYPRESS ROAD.

I was on Grouse today, 10-4ish, skiing for the first time. My only other experience on skis were two occasions, a year apart each (12 and 13 years old) when I went Cross-Country skiing for 3 hours each time.

Needless to say, it looks like I suck at skiing, and it's definitely a workout learning how to ski, when you're so used to snowboarding!

Next time I go up, I think I may just take my snowboard instead of my skis. :/

^ how were the conditions? cause pre-olympics they were really crappy, as you can see all the bare patches on the cut. and many of the blue and black runs were closed.

I was at Cypress today, it says good winter tires or 4x4 is mandatory but there were many cars with all season tires up there. Only the roads at the top by the parking lots were not completely cleared of ice/snow.

And the conditions were amazing, I would say its the best snow of the year so far. If you want the soft powder stuff you will have to venture into the trees

Get there early if you don't want to walk 20 minutes from your car. I got there around 10:40 and was near the end of the 3rd lot

Conditions on Grouse were great. Only crap thing was visibility. As far as snow, it was pure powder, TONS of it, and still coming down heavily most of the day. Today should be the same in terms of snow/snowfall.

They've had over a meter of snow in the past week, and it definitely shows. All major runs are now open, including Paper Trail, Tyee Chute, Expo, etc. The major terrain park is not open, as of yet, and the upper portions of the blacks are also still closed. The lower portions of those runs by Olympic Chair are, however, open.

They upped the prices from last year on the pass. I won't be doing it this year. I'm just going to ride out the remainder of my Y2Play pass from last season.

just curious as to how much it was last year?

picked up my Y2Play pass today and hit up grouse for the first time this year today. Conditions were good--was there from around 330pm - 630pm. Not much fresh powder left and the snow was a little wet and heavy, but still good nevertheless. Visibility was great...i hope they'll get another dump of snow soon, but somehow i doubt it. The Quicksilver terrain park was open today--i am not a park person, but just wanted to bring that up in case anyone's interested in the Quicksilver park.

today was pretty quiet

village was a ghost town

line ups maybe 10 minutes at the worst

peak = foggy at times, 6 inches of powder then pure ice underneath

mid mountain = awesome

lower mountain = all slush like a giant slurpee

I went up in my G35 with with all season tires. Made it up and down fine since it's not that cold and the roads aren't icy (assuming you're going there while it's open, somewhere between 10am to 7pm).
