When I was a broker before, the letters were fixed; only the numbers you could put ck from. ICbC would send the plates to the different offices. If it was a busier office, they would get more plates...

The letter are all the same...and numbers range from 147-160 and 170-199.

Does anyone know how long we can keep plates for after theyve expired only to renew them again down the road?

Reason being, I have 2 plates that have since expired. I want to eventually keep them alive in perpetuity but I've heard conflicting reports that I can only renew them within 1 year after theyve expired. I've also heard that when they do expire I can renew them at any time with no time limit from some brokers.

Any one have any first hand experience with what the system says when you go past a year?

There is no such plate in use, due to similarities between the number "1" and the letter "I".
The closest will be in truck/commercial format xx3281 (which probably won't work for your purpose)

This is just my opinion, but getting custom plate is the easy way out as you simply just pay for it. It's not "rare" because anyone could've "bought" it. However, with the regular plates, even a rich person won't be able to get it if he's not lucky. This is adds to the charm and exclusivity of getting a regular plate with your desired combination.

You are going to have to get a custom plate if you want a number that starts with ‘4’ for a Passenger vehicle. Unfortunately, ICBC has excluded 400-499 series for Passenger plates since the previous 000-AAA format. Reason being in Asian culture, the number ‘4’ represents death. Many brokers had challenges issuing this plate sequence and were stuck with excessive inventory back then. This only applies to Passenger plates though as they are still making Commercial/Truck plates that start with ‘4’.

When Park plates were first released back in 2017, ICBC actually included 400-499 series. However, I haven’t seen any being available for ages so I’m guessing they have excluded that series as well now.

We’d like to advise you of some upcoming changes to letter and number configurations on British Columbia licence plates.

Combinations for several plate types will run out at various times in the upcoming months and years. The number of digits on the plates will not change; ICBC is updating plate types with new six-digit patterns.

Generally, each plate type corresponds to a vehicle type. All license plates use a combination of six characters, and each plate type has a unique pattern and combination. ICBC has approximately 40 different license plate types.

We don’t expect these changes will impact your operations, however, we want you to be aware that if you see new configurations, they are legitimate licence plates issued by ICBC.

Some new configurations starting this summer

New patterns will be made available when the current pattern runs out on that specific plate type. The first new pattern to be released will be the Parks - Porteau Cove configuration, which you’ll see starting in summer 2025. The passenger plate type, which is the most used, will be moved to a new pattern starting in approximately August 2025.

Future state patterns that will be launched in the next year or so are:
