I agree, drivers need to be more mindful of pedestrians.

But pedestrians have to be smarter too. Wear bright clothes and make eye contact with the driver before crossing.

Pretty close to where I live;

I think that's the only pedstrian crosswalk[others are controlled by traffic lights] on victoria Street South of Kingsway.

That crosswalk can be quite hard to see, since the signs are located very far apart, plus it's on a crest.
I think they should add a traffic light there.

Now I know which crosswalk you're talking about. Shit, I remember last time I walked there, none of the cars would stop either. Definitely dangerous :S

I walk that intersection about once every two weeks, and drive by almost everyday.

I'd put good money that it's not the pedestrians fault and it's most likely the driver. I see near misses at this spot at least once a month.

I've seen people just blow by that area all the time. One time I stopped for these two kids to cross the road (they were like approx 10 yrs old). but the guy on the far side was speeding and almost ran them over.

FUCK people need to learn to watch for crosswalks.

True, but for some of the seniors and children that use this crosswalk. They see cars stop on both sides, so they think it's safe to cross, but one guy drives by later on speeding as the pedestrians are both arleady half way through the intersection and thats how it happens.

AND when they cross marked crossings, they don't press the damn button to make the lights flash

Yeah, I think they should add those blinking orange lights for the pedestrians to press when they want to cross (if they're not already there). Those pedestrian crosswalks with only the white stripes on the road are far too dangerous. I've seen alot of the near lane cars yielding to pedestrians but puts the pedestrian in the far lane car's blind spot and the far lane car just blows right past the crosswalk.

I have yet to experience a close call at that crosswalk *knock on wood* but it's definitely a bitch to cross during the day with the constant stream of traffic.

I believe it should be made mandatory for pedestrians at night to wear high visiblity vests with blinking amber lights from dusk till dawn. Anyone caught without will be prompty run down and backed over.

Also sensors should be embedded into the ground that will give pedestrians jaywalking an excruciating painful electrical shock from their high visibility vest if they went even as far as 1 inch off the cross walk.

Jaywalks who are caught should all be made to wear rainbow arm bands and sent off to labour camps and arctic explorations with minimal clothing.
