Breaking Bad

BREAKING BAD is a seriocomic study of a middle-aged man, a high school chemist teacher, on the brink of losing it over a financially poor marriage and the fact that he's leading a double life that his wife knows nothing about. As the harried man, BRYAN CRANSTON delivers a solid performance, full of realistic touches--laced with bitter humor and honesty--his superb work holding the whole episode together.
Seems the need for cash sets up the idea for him to consider partnership with an ex-student who deals in drug sales. After viewing a newscast showing stacks of easy money from a drug bust, Cranston gets the idea to ask his brother-in-law, a DEA agent, if he can accompany him on one of the busts. While there, he spots an ex-student escaping from the scene and hooks up with him later to propose a partnership wherein he'll make the drugs and the student will sell them.
Meanwhile, a visit to the doctor because of a dry cough reveals that he has lung cancer, something he doesn't want to tell his wife because she's expecting a baby. Desperate for "easy money", he gets heavily involved with the ex-student (another brilliant performance by AARON PAUL), and together they find themselves caught up in drastic circumstances with two bodies to get rid of as soon as their drug activities go awry. The sequence where Cranston lets the phosphine gas (while mixing ingredients) do the job of ridding himself of the two men in the van, is a model of suspense.
There's a payoff in virtually every scene, full of unexpected twists that seem credible and always true to the characters. The suspense is almost non-stop, the action scenes are briskly handled, the humor is diabolic, and the dialog is always sharp as a knife. In an amusing breakfast scene, with the wife buying things on the cheap and making substitutions, the son remarks: "This bacon tastes like band-aids." It's as dark as a black comedy can get, but played so earnestly by BRYAN CRANSTON and the cast that the viewer is immediately hooked into the story which begins with a bang.
Fuck yah... I can already tell season 3 is gonna be awesome.

I am all caught up and i gotta say, you guys are right, the slow pace is real in today's televison and I really should embrace it a bit.
Walt and Jesse both provide a great job on their performances. Walt with his family issues (which won him a few awards) and Jesse with his gangster performance down to having him all cleaned up from rehab and his acting with the chick being dead was simply amazing.
I do not enjoy the Skyler sleeping with someone else story line though.

Skylar sucks but that's obviously intentional. Treats Walt like shit for breaking the law to provide for his family then runs to Ted who is also breaking the law but she has no problem with that.

Also bringing in Jesse as a partner isnt smart since the cops will most likely follow him.

^ well i think the fact he felt remorseful to see him getting beat up by his brother in law and be at the hospital. so in return he wanted to be partners again being 50 / 50 and split the money. we both know pinkman won't make 1.5 million even though he knows his formula is just as good.
plus.. we both know the bothof them would be back together. their chemistry is what makes this show so awesome.

I think it was a combination of remorse and to quiet Jesse. More so, Walt probably hoped Jesse wouldn't escalate things by ruining his brother in law's career.

Why wouldn't you want to cover your bases if you are letting go of the kid?
You recruited him with an initiation to kill someone; they gave the kid a gun and made him do the dirty job of handing over the crack. It seems reasonable to take care of any potential liability.
Yeah, this season has been one roller coaster, I'm surprised at how many well written episodes w/action this season has.

I know I'm a little late but I just finished watching the last episode of Season 3 now. The show and the season finale was nothing short of AMAZING!
In regards to the very last scene:
I am 100% sure that Jesse did NOT kill Gale. I re-watched the last 5 or 6 seconds of the episode multiple times. If you look very very carefully, it looks like the camera is the one moving moments before the shot is fired, but it is actually Jessie who moves his arm slightly towards the right, right before he pulled the trigger, thus making it highly likely that he did not shoot Gale. If you have the downloaded file of it, or you're willing to take the extra time to re-steam the season finale, re-watch the last 6 or so seconds and you will probably agree with me. But that's just my two-cents ;)

This article says that he intended that the scene = Jesse shot Gale.
Doesn't say if Gale dies or if he'll change his mind later.
Personally, I hope this doesn't take a turn like in Weeds where everyone uproots and the setting changes in season 3 because that's when that show went downhill.

Finally watched the season premiere. The whole scene of Gus during the lab was... shocking.
Maybe it's just me, but I wasn't overly impressed with Gus' response. He took out that guy by surprise, and it was easier than to have taken out Mike. Gus probably figured Mike was more capable to keep around.
I just don't buy the whole "Gus is a badass" deal. I think he's just like Walt. He's driven to extremes just to keep what he has.
Also, the scenes with Skylar were a complete waste of time. If I were Gus, I would've taken Skylar and Jr. to an undisclosed location, held them there and made Walt work (forever?) to ensure their survival. Of course, I only say this because I don't care much at all for any of Walt's immediate family members. Come to think of it, Gus would've saved himself a loyal henchman if he had done what I said. Gus is looking less and less by the minute.

I'm pretty sure he took out that guy (Victor) because he was seen at the crime scene. Why would he take out Mike? It wasn't one or the other type of thing.
I just don't buy the whole "Gus is a badass" deal. I think he's just like Walt. He's driven to extremes just to keep what he has.
He's not supposed to be badass. I think he himself stated that he's just a businessman.

I'm not sure where in the timeline you want that to happen? At the end of season 3, he wanted to kill off Walt and Jesse, and have Gale take over. He never wanted them to work for him forever.
the scenes with Skylar were a complete waste of time.
This I agree 100%.
In terms of timeline, after Jesse killed Gale, Gus should've sent his troops to pick up Skylar and Jr. It looked like quite a bit of time elapsed with them all just sitting in the lab waiting for Gus to arrive. This could've been time spent rounding up Walt's family.
Since Gale is no longer an option, Gus has to realize Walt is his best bet. Leverage his family, and have Walt work for however long he can make it.
I disagree with the reason you believe Victor (is that really his name?) was killed. Sure, it would be possible if it was a thoughtless decision Gus made in the moment - but that doesn't seem like something he would do. Killing one of your most loyal henchmen just because he appeared at the scene of a murder, after the fact, doesn't mean anything. It does not make him out to be the murderer. I find that not all of Gus' decisions can be reasonably justified. Some decisions, clearly thought out, conflict with others that appear to be illogical.

I was and I wasn't at the same time. One one note I was thinking of being in Walt and Jesse's shoes at the time and how scared I would be seeing Guss come in thinking he's gonna wack me only to have him not say a word and proceed to change into the suit waiting for a horrible death.
On the other hand as a viewer I was thinking he was going to kill Victor the entire time and was like hurry the fuck up already.

Isn't Gus a family himself as well? If he did that who knows if Walt would also have a hit lined up on his family? I dont think Gus would take that chance.

^Walt doesn't exactly have hitters lined up to do his bidding like Gus does. I mean, he needed Jesse to kill Gale.
Iirc, Gus himself has expressed that he doesn't find fear to be a good motivator.
See, that goes back to how illogical some of Gus' decisions are. Some of them make sense, but others, you're left thinking "that's completely unlike something he would do" EG: knifing Victor. What is knifing a guy in the neck while making your underlings watch suppose to do, inspire confidence..?
I still believe Gus isn't some big, badass like so many here believe. It's conflicting actions like I described above that clearly show Gus is just as fallible as anyone else. He walks around with a sense of self-appointed confidence. Mike is the real deal, Gus is just driven to extremes - it's not really him.

skylar has put on some weight
I swear, they wasted at least a good 8 minutes on Marie. That's 8 minutes that we could've used to see what kind of person Victor's replacement is. Or 8 minutes to see how Gus is acting. Or 8 minutes to watch Mike take a dump. Any of that would've been better than watching crazy Marie being a mental wreck.
The following people should die on this show:
-Skylar
-Marie
-Walt Jr.
Ronin
08-01-2011, 06:25 PM
I could do without Marie too. She's a little pointless. Skylar and to a lesser extent, Walt Jr. are essential to the show.
Not to say her part isn't well written and acted but I just didn't really care. Seriously, this is a show about drugs, criminals, etc. I don't need an introspective on the negative effects of Hank's depression on Marie.
This season is quite slow to start after that awesome scene with Gus and Victor in the lab.

They've wasted more time showing Pinkman's evolving drug den...or badger discussing video game zombies...okay...

I think in his little stunt he 1. gave Jesse some purpose, 2. started to tie his loyalty away from Walt and to the organization and 3. by keeping him too busy with "two jobs" it forces him to sober up and rather then being so self destructive be focused and useful.
And on top of all that, it made a very pointed lesson for Walt that Gus can do worse then kill Jesse, the one person who's been on his side the whole time. Gus can turn Jesse against him.
Gus must rock at Chess and Poker.

What I don't understand is if Gus is recording the whole cooking process of Walt, can't he just hire a mediocre chemist to follow his exact same steps using the video footage?
I majored in chemistry for 3.5 years. Even if the measurements are as exact as you can make them, there's still variables such as timing. Even the smallest difference in the measurements will change the process (in this case, it would be the heating and setting times) which will snowball if that mistake is made early. I'm guessing the difference here is serious attention to detail and the knowledge of how to adapt it so that while the process varies each time, the result always remains the same. Walt knows when the vital times are to pay attention and when he can take a nap.
I thought the same thing for Jesse. They're sobering him up to make him less of a liability and at the same time, they're scaring them so they might stay in line.

This week's episode has to be the best so far.
Although that's not saying much as this season has been balls.

I agree.
I think it's interesting that Jesse is going to where Walt started. While Walt is increasingly becoming the reckless, self destructive child that Jesse was.

Jesse's plea to Walt for help with his situation reminded me of previous seasons. Was waiting for Walt to assess the situation and come up with a solution, but Walt's too far gone. The man's paranoia has consumed him.
Also, I can't wait for the new western show to start :fullofwin: I love me some western.

09-12-2011, 10:20 AM
id be paranoid too if everyone wanted to off me
but its too bad walt only got half the story, if he saw jesse go all badass on gus then they would be super tight
i think Gus and Walt need to have a sit down, killing Gus is only going to make shit worse for Walt
and if someone can make him understand that, he will be better off
at this point he has to "play the game" IMO

i dont understand why the cartel just doesn't kill Gus if they had the chance
i doubt there's someone who's got as much resources as Gus to fill the void once he dies...thus the cartel can gain market dominance again
JSilver
09-13-2011, 09:25 AM
In the previous episode they had a flash back where he spoke to one of the Cartel leaders. Cartel leader explained that he knew who Gus was and couldn't kill him because he was a "someone" from Chile. Correct me if I'm wrong. Seems like some sort of un-written rule to not kill leaders who are not in their own country? Most likely a lot more to it.
jeffh
09-13-2011, 03:43 PM
^^yeah
sounds like Gus is kind of a big deal in south america
that and, the cartel needs to use Gus' pre-set-up distribution and front company

That's what's going to happen. If you watch a clip from the next episode, she gets Saul to do it under the guise of a dead distant relative and an "inheritance" on Ted's part.
