Telus Optik High Speed vs. Shaw High Speed Extreme

Any significant differences between the two?
I have been using Shaw for the past many years that I can remember
I never liked ADSL , but since I'm getting a deal from Telus. I thought I might try it.
I do download a lot a month, so will Telus be really 'anal' about bandwidth
your inputs would be great
What do you consider "a lot"? 100 GB?
Telus, in the past, has been more lenient about their bandwidth caps than Shaw. That was a few years ago, when I was more up to date with ISPs in the GVRD.
I would not sign any contract. Where are you located? What are you looking to spend for internet access?

If you're in an apartment try to get Novus - 20 down and 10 up, plus HDTV for $25 a month. I had to call in to have them match Telus' offer but they did it without flinching.

Telus sucks crap. I was getting <3Mbps.
They told me Optik was faster, so I switched. I got 12Mbps 2x since I had this thing installed 2 months ago, and the rest of the time it's been about 2Mbps. Yes, performance actually went DOWN after the upgrade.
I signed 3 years with Telus to give them a shot. Unless I see some major improvements in the next year, it's back to Shaw for me.
The good news I guess is you get a free Xbox 360 out of the deal if you sign 2 years.

Got upgraded to Optik, last week. I'm near the switch, and I get 1.6MB/s (megabytes!) download, consistently. My parents are on the edge of the service area, and the most they manage is 1.0MB/s.
I have TelusTV, but I am going to cancel it. With such crazy bandwidth, I'll just download what I want to watch, and it will only take a few minutes.

Well if you are getting that from downloads then I suspect you read the units incorrectly.
1.6 - 2.0 Mbps is roughly around 0.2 - 0.25 MBps. Which is slow.
1.6 - 2.0 MBps is roughly around 12.8 - 16 Mbps. Which is around what you should be getting.
Shaw high speed extreme is rated at 15 Mbps, around 1.875 MBps.
Does the speed seem fast to you?

People here are talking about their overall speeds. Which you can find out on speedtest.shaw.ca if you want to know your actual speed. I'm assuming you're saying you get 1.6-2.0 mbp/s downloading on websites but you have to keep in mind it also depends on the website's server connection what speed you get.

My condo is wired up for Telus and I have seen speeds of 2.5 megabytes per sec with basic internet and tv package - no xtreme speeds upgrade (or whatever they call it). I've never had better download speeds than this. From my personal experience, I've had a ton of problems with Shaw in the past.

A little for you to think about..
Keep in mind that if you are using Telus Optik High Speed, and your other TVs are on in the household, your bandwidth can dive significantly depending on if it's a SD or HD broadcast.
HD broadcast = -5Mb/s loss per TV
SD broadcast = -3Mb/s loss per TV
Example: if you are on a 15Mbps Highspeed bundle, and you are downloading a file, with 2 HDTV's on, your download speed may drop to 5Mb/s (assuming that you are maxing out on your connection).
This is NEVER the case with Shaw Highspeed.
thats cause shaw is better and the connections are seperate

wrong about that
Shaw gets internet to people using a "hub" format where Telus is dedicated line to each home.
A hub network is one where all customers within a neighbourhood share a common wire and all the splits, repeaters and wall jacks associated with that wire. The unused wall jacks act like small antennas transmitting noise INTO the cable network. This noise reduces the overall signal to noise (S/N) ratio for the entire network segment and reduces everybody's level of service.
Also Shaw uses DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) which in short is a way to monitor your actions online
People please stop saying stupid things like this company sucks and this company sucks cause really the service will only be as good as the person who installs it. I've had Shaw before and it was terrible due to the shitty coax that the Shaw guy made for me. Ive had Telus too and that sucked dude to the lazy installer (no filter) No matter what company you go with it will suck if not properly installed. lot of it depends on where you live and the condition of the lines in that area.
Please educate yourself on how the systems work and don't focus on the name of the company or what random people say, one persons exp will vary greatly to your own.
Way to cause paranoia with DPI. If any of you are really tin-foil hat paranoid about your online interactions, Echelon will pick it up. That's not Shaw, that's the CIA.
Shaw used to use Ellacoya, a packet inspection technology. That was used to help thwart protocols like BT that were draining bandwidth. Whether or not they still use it, well, a good way of determining that is firing up a torrent and seeing what sort of speeds you get. Stuck at 10 kB/s download? Packet-shaped, probably. Getting 500 kB/s? You're fine.
Your explanation about a hub network is extremely crude. I don't see how it's really relevant to this discussion. Although Shaw may employ a hub and spoke topology, if there's enough bandwidth in an area (i.e. a surplus, enough to meet demand), then it doesn't really matter what sort of network topology they have.

dont mean to cause paranoia but its a comparable difference that a lot of ppl dont know
and how is it not relevant when trip was sayin Shaws connections are separate? its a correction to his comment.
I'm not favoring a side cause i think playin telus against shaw is the best way to get a deal
how would u describe the hub system if not 1 common cable with splitters and repeaters?
I think what trip was trying to say was in response to willystyle's post about how many HD/SD channels you're watching/recording with Telus, you'll get different speeds. Trip was saying on Shaw, it doesn't matter how many HD/SD channels you're watching, your internet speed is not affected by it. He said "connections". "Frequencies" is probably a better term.
As I said before, don't look too much into the physical topology of Shaw. So long as there's enough bandwidth to meet demand, network topology is irrelevant.
^ thx
also telus optik is not fibre optic, thats why they use a K instead of a C
Mr.Jay
10-09-2010, 09:02 PM
ahhh makes more sense now
true enough tho once fiber comes around this will all be irrelevant
I would wager fiber to the home is a long, long away. Unless you're building an entirely new community, digging into existing neighbourhoods to lay fiber down is too expensive. Canada isn't like the US, where there's more fierce competition from multiple ISPs. The threat is different for Canadian ISPs.
If i'm not mistaken, what Shaw uses now is hybrid-fiber coax. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_fibre-coaxial
Even Novus, who uses fiber, only runs it to the switch of a building (possibly multiple switches). From the switch to the suite, it's CAT5.
willystyle
10-09-2010, 10:05 PM
Then what is this 1Gbps service that Shaw is trying to roll out to residential services? Will it be only available to new condos? Existing communities with detached homes and older apartments will be left in the dark?
Did I not say "Unless you're building an entirely new community"..? Shaw is under no obligation to provide X speeds straight across the board. I doubt Joe Schmo is going to care he can't get 1 Gbps just to surf the web.
For the record, I am not saying it's impossible to lay fiber to existing communities, I'm saying it's too expensive and the pay-off right now is not in Shaw's favor.

More realistically, you can never exceed over 2mbps on downloads from website like fileplanet, $$$$$$$$$$, etc. Most of the sites cap their download speed at 2mbps. The only time you can ever get 15mbps is during a speedtest from your local server.
If you can find a site/torrent that lets you download more than 2mbps, you're lucky.

Telus tech support, in my experience, is not as good as Shaw tech support.
How much do you pay for Telus, and which area are you in?
You're kinda right. It's been hit or miss for me.
I remember Telus having absolutely garbage tech support and customer service for cell phone and internet back in late 90s to early 2000s and that was why i switched to Shaw in the first place.
My last apmt we had Shaw and we had consistent issues with speed. We weren't able to watch more than 30s of Youtube. Even 30s of video took 30min to download...Because of that, I was constantly on the phone with Tech support with Shaw and they kept getting me to restart the modem, unplug everything and plug it back in, restart my PC, and nothing worked. It was the area I was living in I believe and they probably didn't deem it worthwhile to fix whatever needed to be fixed. Anyways, Im rambling now, nothing worked and there were many times (at least 4times that i can remmeber) when I called in they just simply said to me 'you're area is due for a update' or something 'and we will be addressing that issue very soon'... Not bad customer service but tech support did not resolve anything and were at times dismissive.
For Telus, at least in recent years, I've found they've been quite good in the customer service dept. I haven't had too many tech issues with them besides one time, the internet connection being quite slow and all I was instructed to do by those guys was to reset the modem, which did the trick. Customer Service-wise, they've actually been extraodinary. I pay about $50 for internet and basic cable plus a bunch of other channels (incl a few HD ones), plus free rental of 2 HD boxes. Don't ask me how we swung that deal, my wife (gf at the time), somehow got them to give us all these things...I think it was supposed to be $80 or $90 otherwise, but don't quote me on that I could be wrong.

telus customer service still is garbage.
a friend with 2 phone lines telus mobility has 5months left on the contract wanted to renew for 3 years with iphone 3gs's (not 4s, 3GS!!) and telus wanted him to buy out the rest of the contract at $20 x 5months x 2lines ($400)... even tried calling as him (i consider myself above average when it comes to negotiation) and got shot down every way. rogers would have renewed in a second. not to mention the attitude problems over at telus..
anyways this thread is about internet not mobile phones... telus sucks, carry on.

This is NEVER the case with Shaw Highspeed.with the new Optik TV system, your internet speed should not be affected that much, even if you are watching 2 HD streams. the old Telus TV service would do that, and Telus realized that it sucked. also, the fine print in the service agreement states that Telus will only guarantee 10Mbps to your home. they can't guarantee the full 15Mbps due to things like signal attenuation and shitty/old phone lines in your house.
thats cause shaw is better and the connections are seperate
shaw also has free service calls if something goes wrong, others might charge you quite a bit. telus has crappy customer service as well but be prepared to wait to wait on hold for shawlike someone said earlier, shaw internet is not separate from cable TV service. also, Telus gives free dispatched service calls too so I don't know why you would imply that Telus does not give free on-site service.
PS. since Telus TV is running on an IPTV system, I don't think they can monitor your bandwidth since your TV is constantly using bandwidth as well. ;)

When I was with Telus at my old place I consistently get 1.7MB/s down and .125MB/s up, with no lengthy downtime (I can only remember maybe one or two days out of the whole year that it didn't work). I also had Telus TV at the time and the two were set up on two different lines (two numbers) so they would not interfere with each other. Not sure if Telus is willing to do this anymore but you can try calling and asking about it... this way you get your max internet speed AND your TV watching won't affect it.

What's wrong with the speedtouch? I thought that was the best one.
I have the 2wire and it's a huge piece of shit. The thing stalls and drops so much. I don't think the hardware is good enough to even perform its routing functions. I had to go into the diagnostic controls with the leaked Telus password and put it into bridge mode (modem only) to use with my D-Link router. So much better.
From my testing, for the 2wire I was only getting about 10.5mbps with WPA on, 11.5-12mbps with no encryption. When I put it into bridge mode with my D-link router, I'm consistently getting 13.5mbps.

Yea those are the 2wires which are all refurbs.
Generally these modems suck at multi tasking.
I recommend using it as a router only and gettin a new VDSL modem
btw each modem is classified a certain speed spec with the two Telus usually provide being xDSL and VDSL. XDSL is rated up to 10mb (if i remember right) and if you want a stable connection with a rate higher than that you will need a VDSL modem which is the "cell pipe" (I cant remember the actually name right now).

Speedtouch were supposed to be the best..but there's only 1 port and I'm trying to take advantage of the 2 dynamic IP's advertised by Telus(I used a switch but it wasn't consistent...it would work for a few weeks and be down no matter how reset/powercycle modems & routers)
This SE567 is giving me a huge headache. The speed is good but it won't let my PS3 have NAT 2 (and it disconnects couple times a day for 20sec-1min). For some reason I can't portforward port 80 but I can do others just fine. I read online that the only solution is to go bridge mode...but I dont know if that means i'll lose the 2 dynamic IPs?
Any clue on how I can achieve 2 dynamic IPs with SE567 in bridged mode? I have at least 4 routers that i can add up so that's not a problem.
Mr. Jay, do you know when the VDSL modem will be coming?

The VDSL modem is out already just call in and say you modem is buggy and you want a new VDSL modem.
lots like Gatorade is on High Speed Lite which is 1.5mb and the cheapest plan unless he has been on this for awhile than he is one of the few Telus just bleeds for money as this plan back in the day cost a lot compared to the plans now

Alcatel Lucent 7130 Cellpipe modem. This modem is only for Optik TV suscribers so dont know if they will give this to you. It has no wireless capability simply a VDSL/ADSL gateway and these were available since Optik TV was advertised

Just got a quick question about Telus Vs SHaw.
I am looking to switch from SHAW to Telus. I currently have Basic cable, Fairchild and Talentvison and Extereme Intenet. The bill came out to about $110 each month.
Call Shaw to see if I can reduce my bill and they pretty much give me the take it or leave it attitude.
Anyways just wanted to know how's Telus service in terms of high speed? Looking to get a High speed Internet with them and pretty much what I have with SHAW before. The issue is I have about 6 computers on the network constantly and I do use PPS, BT, and Netflix pretty often so bandwidth and useage might be an issue. Also we have 3 TV right now so with Telus do I have to purchase a HD box for each TV?

If you're doing the TV + Internet combo and you're in Vancouver you'll most likely be on Optik. I'm getting Optik installed next week so I'll have a few speed test comparisons then.

I was just switched over to Optik several weeks ago as opposed to their traditional ADSL. So far, there seems are quite an improvement. I went from an average of 5Mb/s to about 10-12Mb/s (based off the Speedtest.net Burnaby server.) In terms of upload speeds, nothing to write home about. I should note that my tests were done over WiFi, not over cable.
Our household comprises of light surfing, e-mail, IM, YouTube and web radio streaming. This is more than enough for our needs so your mileage may vary. I can't say the same for Shaw simply because we haven't used their services in such a long time. I used to be a Telus employee so ADSL was 40% off and I decided to stay with them.

This is because if you're on Telus high speed (the 6Mbps or higher), it uses the same lines as their TV service and they can't distinguish between the internet traffic and the TV traffic. In effect, you have unlimited cap space since they can't enforce it.
No, you don't need to actually use their TV service. It doesn't matter.

Note how I said "a few years ago". As in, 5+ years ago, when Optik didn't exist, and Telus didn't offer TV service.
Also, I find it hard to believe that a giant telecom company like Telus can't distinguish between voice/video and data traffic on their network. That would be like saying Telus doesn't employ any sort of QoS technology, which doesn't sound likely at all.
If I was moving into a building that had CAT5 pre-wired (which is quite common), I would look into getting Novus internet over Telus, no question about it.

I believe if your neighbors show majority interest in Novus, they can approach them and ask if Novus can introduce services to the building.

no phone. Our phone line is pretty cheap (Italk BB my parents switch it without letting me know first...).
Quality isn't that bad we just plug their ATA into the router and it seems fine. Quality isn't as good as telus but for 6.99 a month we get unlimited North american calling and I think 200Mins to HK/CHina with voice mail, call forwarding.... is not a bad deal at all. The only thing though is that since we didn't wire it with the phone jacks so we have to plug the cordless phone into the ATA. Is fine overall since our cordless phone have 3 different phones.
If the ATA has an extra phone jack, plug a phone line from that into an empty phone jack in the wall. If all the phone lines are wired together in your house, the ATA will feed every phone jack.

If you do this you need to make sure you disconnect the telus drop from your inside wire. Not sure you wanna feed the 52 volts into your phone system.

Did you just get internet? IF so then over your wired connection you should get 15 meg. If you got tv as well and are on a vdsl port you will still get 15, but if you are on a 2+ port the speed will vary based on how many streams you are accessing for tv. It does say on the website speeds "up to" 15M.

Rogers was leasing telus lines to provide service, They have pretty much stopped residential and only have some business customers here. The problem with them as a provider was if you had trouble you called them and then they called us, then we checked to demarc only and then called them and then one of their techs would come out to fix it. You can see how that could be a bit of a wait for repair.

Our family is currently using Telus for our home phone and internet services and Shaw for basic Cable (+Fairchild channels).
Total we pay for our monthly bills comes to about $111/month before tax.
Gave telus a call today lady on the line was really nice. At first I thought she was giving me a deal but when I looked at the pricing and stuff it was pretty much the standard/similar to what I was paying already >_>;
I was offered under a 3 Year Term:
PVR, Xbox360
Home Phone: 37$ (Dad needs the 5 calling features for home business)
Internet on High Speed Turbo 30$ (would be changed to the optiks equivalent)
Basic Cable: 23$
Fairchild Addon (May range from $12-20 depending on the one we pick)
+5$ a month if I want the Xbox to have the digital cable service
Total would be pretty much equal +/- $10~20 of what I am paying right now.
Upside i see to it is I get an xbox, a pvr (which I dont have right now)
Downside is the contract and I may lose some of the other asian channels my mom watches.
Would it be worth the trouble to make the switch?
Purpose was to hopefully save some money on our monthly bills while getting some better services (Since we haven't done any upgrades in a while). Wondering if I can get a better deal from some of the Telus techs who hang around RS

She only watches Fairchild.
But heres the thing thats weird
On my shaw bill it says:
Asian TV package = 7$ ( I get Fairchild, The mandarin one and the movie channel)
On the shaw website
Add Fairchild = 18.95
Add Fairchild + Others = 28.95
For Telus:
Just fairchild = $12
Fairchild + Mandarin = 20$
Dont know why the price for just fairchild got marked up so high :S

Meh , i don't use any well known company for telephone as it way cheaper to go with ITALKBB which is VOIP, imo i think it is the best bang for your money as it you get unlimited calling around the world for only like 30 something bucks, i forgot how much it was , ill check my bill to comfirm it, i've used it for months now and it works great, no more stupid expensive calling cards that shit adds up.
I got the Telus 10*3 promo... with some channel selection, DVR rental and stuff comes to about 68 after tax per month.
speed isn't bad in my area. I get constant 1MB~1.5MB/s on BT, and apparently they can't monitor the traffic on my connection because of the IPTV?! I'm pushing a few hundred GB per month easily, streaming everything from home is awesome! :D

Setup depends on the house/apartment layout, wiring and number of boxes
Give you have a phone jack by a power outlet and cable jack setup should be pretty quick however that is if you don't have crappy wiring.
Be prepared for 5 hrs but the job can take as little time as 45mins

$37 for 15mbit, you say? Funny, that... I was paying $47/mo. $57 for Shaw Extreme when I decided to switch to that. The speed difference for Extreme-I wasn't as noticeable in the downstream, but in the upstream where I went from .52 to .96mbits compared to Telus, where I get ~14.4 down, .86 up for $37/mo.
The key points to realize with both Shaw and Telus, their service says "Up to 15mbps" not that you're guaranteed that speed. In the case of Shaw, I was getting 14.8mbps at the best of times, with it consistently being lower, around 11-12mbps. To me, neither is better, but the price I'm paying for the same speed from Telus is enough to make me feel like I'm at least getting the same for less money than with Shaw.
When I spoke with Shaw before I was considering moving to Telus, Shaw wasn't willing to budge for me. Months later, I decided after a couple of weeks of research to give Telus a try. When I called Shaw to inform them that I was cancelling my service, only then were they willing to match Telus' price, but not their offers of service credits for signing a 2 year contract. The xbox, obviously, they weren't willing to match.
The funny part? The lady on the Shaw line tried telling me the xbox would die within a year anyway.
I haven't had any issues with Telus yet, besides the 1HD + 2SD feed, but for the amount I watch TV, I'm not really affected by it too greatly.
Price comparison:
Shaw
Shaw Extreme-I Internet $57
Shaw HD Digital TV $62.95
HD Plus $16
Simple Double Play Discount -$10
Total Monthly $125.95, w/tax $141.06
Telus
Optik Digital TV Pick Your HD $75
Optik High Speed $37
Total Monthly $112, w/tax 125.44
Saves me nearly $16/mo

never had an xbox, but wondering can't you just buy it and when it fails, register it with Microsoft then wait a few weeks and tell them it broke down? Or do they do it by purchase recepit, in which case you could just tell Microsoft it was a free gift no receipt ??
I did this with my logitech steering wheel, didn't register it and then when I felt the pedals squeaking I thought they would break down soon I registered and called them they ended up sending me brand new set of pedals, AND I got to keep the old set which had nothing wrong with it really except a minor squeak

All I know is microsoft is covering the warranty. It would be up to them to determine the purchase time , but I am sure they would probably ask for some sort of proof of when you got it. Logitech from what I have heard is great for warranty.

I find that hard to believe. I was going to get charged $120 after taxes for cable (up to ch 58 or whatever it is) and high speed internet. I called them to price match telus and they dropped $20. Only when I called Shaw to cancel, is when they tried to price match. I now pay $37 taxes in for high speed internet and Optik medium package essential cable with free PVR and 1 digital box for the next 3 yrs. I can add all the specialty channels and upgrade to extreme high speed and I'll still be under $80. I don't give a shit what people say, we are still far from recovered from the economy downfall and better pricing talks during this time.

Telus don't currently have anyone monitoring either. The only time they will look at your usage is if you call them for a change or break with your internet. This has been like that for the past 2 months (used to work in marketing for telus until a month ago).
Hopefully they havnt hired anyone to do this yet.

Non optik users can request for the 2Wire one I think. Its older than the siemens but newer than the thomson and works wayy better. I had them swap it for me (no charge contingent i send the siemens back to them) when I was using telus DSL.
I've switched to optiks now so all is well.
Just call them up tell them your situation nicely. Tell them that PS3 + Siemens Gigaset wont support NAT2 you've looked it up already but the 2Wire modem you offer for regular DSL seems to work and ask if they are willing to swap it
If not just tell them to transfer you to the customer loyalty dept and tell them the same thing. If they still wont do a swap just say you'll be discontinuing telus services because their not willing to support the needs of the customer

Just switched to Optik less than 2 weeks ago and the internet in the house often disconnects without warning. Here is the tricky bit though, There is a PC connected directly (no wifi) to the telus internet, and there is no connection. However on my Macbook Pro and my iMac desktop the internet is working fine. This makes no sense to me. I understand if it's just dropping wifi connections but when it's plugged in directly it's just got me WTFing

Yes they do still do bundled discount without contract, the only benefit of sign a contract is they waive your HD box rental fee (for TV) and you get an xbox (for internet contract)
What I did was got everything installed and their first 3 months on optik is introductory rate, and it cost like $45 a month for the first 3 months for everything including the HD box rental, then after the 3 months (made my own trial period) i signed the contract.

I called in for the 15/15/15 deal last week and was told that the phone and internet have no contracts and the only service they'd put you on a contract for is the TV.

but essentially your contract for your TV is the same as your internet because the TV feed is provided by Telus internet only.

Even though it Is ip based you do not need to pay for internet to have tv. You only have to have one other service. So tel and tv is fine.

For those with random disconnects, call TELUS and try and rectify the problem.
A friend and I had the same problem and it was due to a faulty modem or additional wires that need to be upgraded (usually on older homes).
They came and checked all my wiring and gave me the new N router and it has been fine since. However, the dmz function on the N router doesn't work, so COD is messed until they come up with a patch.
Don't forget that you can get free movies and episodes under VOD> TV > HBO Movies (or something along those lines, I don't remember exactly) if you have subscription to the SuperChannel movie channels and/or HBO.
I think there is still a 3 month trial for Super Channel and HBO, might want to call in and check.
Good luck. Optik is pretty sweet.

bumping this shit to rant.
the siemens gigaset wireless gateway is a POS..the speed goes to shitter every few days and no NAT2 on PS3 cause I cant open port 80..i tried getting Telus to send me a cellpipe modem or the d-link g3810 but it's only reserved for optik..told them i've exhausted all their other modems and they fucking tell me PS3 NAT2 connectivity is not officially supported...they only care if you have basic connectivity...If i wanted it to work I have to pay $80 for the premium care package whatever to solve my problem. uh hello...PS3 is one of the supported wireless devices on your stupid website.
http://telus.com/portalWeb/inlineLink/CP_SCS/Help/Internet_Help/Wireless_Network/FAQ_Main/SmartPhones/All_Platforms/?_region=BC&_region=AB#2_3
so now I'm back to the thompson speedtouch...i get NAT2 but I have to use my shitty hub to get the 2 dynamic IPs that's advertised for telus turbo... not to mention it's a PITA opening ports for it if i wanna torrent thru a router then a hub. Anyone know how I can escalade this to someone higher up? I've been with this ISP for more than 10 years and I'm tired of paying so much if they don't get a shit about their loyal customers. fuck I wish I have novus in my area
/RANT
Which Telus package do you have? I'm planning on getting the High Speed Turbo soon.
Does the Thompson SpeedTouch still work? They want to give me that Siemens router but I'd prefer to just keep my setup now.l

Home Phone Basic $20.95

Total $114.13

When I spoke with Shaw before I was considering moving to Telus, Shaw wasn't willing to budge for me. Months later, I decided after a couple of weeks of research to give Telus a try. When I called Shaw to inform them that I was cancelling my service, only then were they willing to match Telus' price, but not their offers of service credits for signing a 2 year contract. The xbox, obviously, they weren't willing to match.
i talked to shaw today and they were 100% unwilling to negotiate anything. The lady was spinning me some bullshit about how their company policy changed on Jan 1st and they are "no longer in the business of matching other companies". the only thing she mentioned was the HD plus package at 50% off for 2 months (what a joke). i guess i'll have to call in and pretend to cancel my services then huh?

If you do not have telus optik available in your area shaw knows there is a good chance you will not switch. Regular Telus is complete crap and they know it :)
You can goto the Telus website and type in your postal code and see if optik is in your area. Im pretty sure this is what Shaw does when you phone aswell to see if you can make a deal.

There is no regular telus anymore, the only service sold is the optik. As a supplement satellite is available to those that do not qualify for the optik service.

I just spoke to Telus and this is what they're offering me:
optik high speed - $37
basic home phone - $28
optik TV (Pick 9 theme packs + the essentials) - $45 for the first 6 months, $75 after
Free PVR and Receiver
Total after 6 months = $140/mo
The catch is a 3-year contract... What do you guys think?
snowball
01-13-2011, 12:22 AM
^ i'm pretty sure the three year contract is just for the free PVR rental, home phone for 28? Last time I checked it was 21 with one option unless you have more options.
Everything there seems to be about regular price... did you check the telus website? I don't think this is really a "deal" if you're looking for one.
Tempting to switch over. Any problems with Telus Optik Internet? I also heard somewhere that the HD quality for Optik is compressed.

I had some major problems with them month n half ago, signed up for optik tv and Internet package they installed normal satellite and regular net. Also broke my home phone line for a week and refused to fix it. I went through a dozen Filipino call agents who were absolutely useless and decide I've had enough. Called to cancel since murphys law took place everything that could have gone wrong absolutely went wrong, get to the saves department in Alberta some white guy puts me on a $30 optik package with optik Internet WITH a xbox at only a 2 year contract. All I ever wanted was the optik Internet really but all the extras are welcome. Almost 2 months no Xbox don't really care, but my PS3 connection is way better than Shaw I get Nat 2 now when with Shaw before I use to only get shitty Nat 3 which is the worst you can't even host online games in some of them. Also simple tasks like switching between channels is instant and instead of waiting about a second with shaw, and the cute little picture in picture thing when you're in guide is fuckin way better than Shaw.. Not to mention Shaw been rippin me for a long time charging $120 for their medium
Internet and medium tv package, now telus only $60 and better quality, but telus customer service sucks, not surprised someone shot up the Telus building few years back
My suggestion to anyone here, never call tech support you always get transferred to the Phillipines call the TV department instead the call center is in Canada somewhere

I just switched over to Telus from Shaw -
Getting the following bundled deal:
OptiK TV (Essentials) w/ PVR
Optik High Speed Internet
on a 3 year contract for the Cable, internet I can change if I wish.
PRICE: $30/month for the 1st year and then $60/month for the next two.
Sure, some of my services are less than they were, but I don't need so many f'in channels. I was paying $119/month with Shaw for essentially the same thing...
$119/month versus $30/month for 1 year and then to $60/month.
on top of that, their entire call center is moving back to vancouver from what I've heard so that whole "they have terrible customer service" argument will be out the window... I guess I'll see how the service is when they hook it up in a few weeks. Main thing I'm concerned about is the internet connection, but that can be switched, didn't get a contract for internet.
I was also transferred to a Shaw retention person after calling in to cancel.. They refused to offer me anything at all to keep me as a customer, after 9 years I was shocked. I've never asked them for anything before, or tried to hunt deals going back and forth between them and Telus. Interesting business approach on their part... Something they should really look at as their must be better ways to spot the deal seekers from the loyal customers.
I spoke with a few front line people over their as well who were very harsh. As soon as I mentioned moving over to Telus they became confrontational and defensive and told me they wouldn't price match anymore. Who the hell taught these people their retention skills. Hey Shaw, advice for you. As soon as someone calls to cancel services have your reps transfer them to a retention specialist as I was already gone after your front line accosted me over the phone.

Called Shaw today voicing my concern on their price and speed compared to Telus. Flat out said no to everything. Not a hint of keeping me as a customer. I'll be looking up what Telus has to offer for internet access in the next few days.
Any recommendations, I just want quick internet for a good price.

Totally unacceptable.
Why the FUCK is internet still as slow as god knows how many years ago? Japan a decade ago STILL had faster internet than what we have now.
It's bad enough getting overcharged for outdated internet, now they're going to overcharge on their already retarded prices, and provide LESS service than before.
Broadband needs more Wind/Mobilicity-esque companies.
