you've probably seen them around transit stops and in downtown. collecting for children/earthquakes/etc.

i assume its a scam based on their overall shadiness - they do usually have some sort of identification that could easily have been photoshopped.

any info on them? scam?

Filipino kid collecting donations or white kid selling cookies, just walk by them and totally disrespect them with swagger. Just pretend like they don't even exist or have a soul.

cuz all kids that sell shit or collect money work for cuban drug lords, then those guys use that money to bring drugs into Vancouver. Common sense man.

i think its a scam and im filipino.

i remember when they were at metro.
they asked me for change when i walked in, so i gave them about 4 dollars.

then on my way out they asked me again and i said i already gave you guys money..and then she stared at me and gave me the wtf look and said no you didn't.. then i just walked away and ignored them. lol.

I was approached by one before and she kept hassling me to donate especially since im "fellow filipino", using that as a guilt trip. I told her i had no cash with me and she had the nerve to tell me she'll go to the bank with me to withdraw cash! i brushed her off and walked away.
take 1exotic's advice and just pretend they dont exist or have a soul. no matter how much they hassle or annoy you, or even follow you, just walk away. they'll eventually leave you alone but they will stick to you like tree sap if you give the slightest hint of interest.

filipino group on kingsway and joyce
i was on the corner waiting to cross to 7-11, i see a group of filipino ladies walking towards me. they asked me for donations for some crap that i didn't couldn't make out. i said i had no change on me (which was true), so they asked me for bills, which i wasn't planning on giving anyways. and one of the ladies was like "you go to bank and take out money?"
i was like "you gotta kitten me...." so i just ignored them and began crossing the street. they literally started following me across the street continuously asking me to take out money from the bank.

Pretty sure it's a scam.

Parked at E Spot once, as soon as I get out of the car, two philipino ladies corner me asking for change. I told them I didn't have any change on me and they asked me how I was going to play the games. I told them I was going to withdraw cash from E Spot's ATM to pay for my games and they offered to follow me inside to the ATM. Wtf!?

Then another time, I was with my friends having some bubble tea inside Zephyr, then out of nowhere two phillipino ladies literally walked to our couch and sat on the armrest to ask for change. Who does that!?!? Again, we told them we were paying by plastic and they tried to guilt trip us to thinking that we're letting children die.

I have dealt with them b4, I was on my way into Superstore and 1 filipino lady came up and asked for donation for kids in filipino, so I gave her 5 bucks, being such a nice guy and all. And when I came out of supertore a diff lady came up to me and ask me for money again.
I told her I already gave the other lady 5 bucks, and she have the nerve to say to me that if I gave her 5 bucks I have to give her 5 bucks as well.

then I was like fuck off and left.

fast forward 4-5 months, I was walking dt, and saw the same filipino lady asking me for money. At that point I know her face, so I just walked passed them and shook my head.

TOTAL SCAMMER !!

It happened to me at Superstore recently. I lady struck up a conversation with me in the chips section and then it progressed to asking for a donation. I told her I'll only donate to a good cause if she can provide me with a receipt for income tax purposes. She said she couldn't and said she'll accept small change. I told her to put that bag of chips (from her basket) back on the shelf and use that money for a donation. She said no and I told her to have a nice day.

I've ran into them at a lot of different places in the lower mainland. Most of the time were in Metrotown. They would approach you and shove this laminated flyer with flip kids on it in yo face and ask you at least 5 times to donate.
The most recent encounter was @ the Starbucks on Ackroyd in Richmond last week.

I haven't seen this yet

It's definitely a scam. I've seen them do it for many years now with the same "cause." They mainly target Asians who look like they could be Filipino. I'm Filipino myself, and I just pretend to be Chinese whenever they ask me, so they flip off.

I mean honestly though, if they could prove to me they were a legitimate charity organization, I would mind donating a couple bucks. Like when I go to Timmy's I usually drop a loonie or a toonie in the donation box at the register if I get change back.

FN-2199
10-12-2010, 10:49 AM
Legit registered charitable organizations are always able to provide tax receipts. It's a good thing to keep in mind, unless it's petty change for Salvation army, Cadets, etc.

Had one women rush over to me as I was walking to staples and ask for a donation of change. I told her I had no change because it's a hassle to carry around in the type of wallet I have so she asks me for paper money and I was in disbelief no charity or any type of money collecting has ever been as persistent as to ask for paper money. Figured something was up so I said no thank you and tried to leave but she kept following me asking for money, normally I'm a pretty patient personbut she kept harassing me for paper money and saying I'm not letting the kids have a home at which point I just got really fed up and said if I donate money to you and they get homes what am I going to get I'm trying to save money for a mortgage down payment so I have a place to live... The nerve she said "so? This is for the kids I can goto the bank with you to get money". I just got pissed off told her to donate her own money and tried to walk away... Walked into staples she followed me but since my gf works there and the managers kind of know me I told them she was harassing me they asked her to leave saw her leave the store really pissed off. These people are annoying rude and very dissrespectable just ignore them your best bet.

why the managers don't kick them out with more force I don't know.
one time they even had a guitar and were singing.
I said no, then went to the store next door, bought a 649 and said oh sorry I found some change.

yeah I'm pretty sure I ran into them awhile back by commercial drive, they asked me for a donation to some funding for underprivileged children. I didn't think much about it and gave them a 5 which I thought was a pretty generous donation coming from a broke college student. All they said when I gave them the 5 was why I wasn't donating the other two 20's in my wallet, they hounded me for awhile for the 20's but I just put on my headphones and walked off lol.

Am I the only one surprised that some of you give 5 or 10 bucks to people "repping" a "charity" they've never heard of?

Scam or not (which it probably is 99% chance), please only donate money to causes you actually support or trust. I know your heart is in the right place when you do this but it does take away from legit charities, where you KNOW the money is going where you want it.

If it's proven that these are 100% scam, we should just go around looking for them and if they ask for money, punch them in the face - that should put an end to it pretty quick.

Wow, I thought it was just me. I ran into them 3 times in total. All three times were at Superstore. One time I was going to work and she just leeched onto me and wouldn't leave, but I just walked away. The second time I was with my buddy and the same woman asked us for money. I didn't have any bills so I just dumped all my pennies and dimes into the bucket, while my buddy only had bills and no change so the bitch had the audacity to ask if he would donate the bills and if he wouldn't, she would follow him to the counters to exchange for coins. One time I was with my mama and another bitch asked us for money, I was like "MOTHER DON'T DO IT!!!!" But too late, my mother already took out some change.

I also hate the scouts people that block the doors at Richmond Centre and ask for money, like fuck you seriously, if I want to donate, I wouldn't need you to remind me, and maybe I don't want to donate to that certain cause.

They need to learn how to do this properly from the Japanese people at Little Tokyo in LA. They were super pleasant, and they gave you a sticker so they knew who donated. They would thank you when you passed by, and have a great big smile on their faces. It's organizations and volunteers like them who I don't mind donating to.

I've had multiple run ins with these people and none of them were pleasant.

First Run-In:

About a year ago, my dad and I were coming back from a worksite kinda late (11pm)so we decide to stop at Ken's kitchen to get something to eat. Right when we were about to enjoy our food, these three Filipino women come in with a guitar and start sing "nobody but you", but only the "nobody nobody but you" line again and again and again. Everyone was quite annoyed with them when they started asking for money and the manager came out to kick them out. They would NOT leave. They kept asking for money from the patrons until my dad caved in and gave them a 10, which was more than generous. Then they had to audacity to ask me for money as well saying things like " you should match your dads donation and I know you have money on you, I can see it. (My wallet was on the table). i tried to be polite and said no, and she made a move for my wallet. I pushed her aside and said "wtf are you doing? \you got your money, gtfo you dirty flips." Before she had a chance to say anything the manager threatened to call the cops and they left. My dad said "If I knocked her out and went to jail, I would of posted bail".

*note that had these really cheap laminated name tag things that say they are from some unknown charity.

Run in 2:

Not as interesting as the first one but just as annoying. I was at the td (next to metro) getting cash for this dinner i was going to. These two filipino caught me leaving bank and asked for a "donation" and i remembered the same tag. I asked what it was for and they said for an earthquake in the philipinnes. I said I dont recall hearing about one, and they said it wasnt in the news yet. So I declined and tried to leave but they wouldnt let me. Everytime I would try to leave, they would move a bit and cut me off. They kept insisting saying it would be a donation to humanity and stuff. I ended up escaping by faking left(iirc) then dashed right. I started to heading to my car and they started to follow. At this point im kinda pissed but also a little creeped out and confused. I jumped in the car and left as fast as i could.

I was at Square One mall in Mississauga for lunch today, and one of these same fake Filipino charity money collectors was walking around the food court asking everyone for money. Everytime they've approached me, including today, I've ignored them and turned away before they can even get five words out of their mouths, so I've never had a particularly bad experience with them. Today, to my dismay, some young white guy actually pulled out his wallet and gave her a bill. :nono:

An old joke, but still relevant.

Charitable Donation
A local United Way office realized that it had never received a donation from the town's most successful lawyer. The person in charge of contributions called him to persuade him to contribute.

"Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least $500,000, you give not a penny to charity. Wouldn't you like to give back to the community in some way?"

The lawyer mulled this over for a moment and replied, "First, did your research also show that my mother is dying after a long illness, and has medical bills that are several times her annual income?"

Embarrassed, the United Way rep mumbled, "Um...no."

"--or that mybrother, a disabled veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair?"

The stricken United Way rep began to stammer out an apology but was interrupted,

"--or that my sister's husband died in a traffic accident," the lawyer's voice rising in indignation, "leaving her penniless with three children?!"

The humiliated United Way rep, completely beaten, said simply, "I had no idea..."

On a roll, the lawyer cut him off once again: "--so if I don't give any money to them, why should I give any to you?!?"

I bet the scammers will STILL argue that giving it to them is a better.

They need to learn how to do this properly from the Japanese people at Little Tokyo in LA. They were super pleasant, and they gave you a sticker so they knew who donated. They would thank you when you passed by, and have a great big smile on their faces. It's organizations and volunteers like them who I don't mind donating to.

if u every go to HK u see ppl like that a lot & they ask u to put your domination in bag they carry & they give u a sticker after you dominate, & all the money goes to organizations like the cancer foundation & stuff like that

why don't all of us sent an email to CTVs chris olsen on his little segment called "Olsen On Your Side " during the 6:00pm local news, hes fights for consumers a lot

I've got an easy escape route for whenever I'm harassed by someone like that. As soon as they ask me for change, I give them a puzzled look and respond with a "je ne parle pas l'anglais" (poorly written french for "I don't speak english"). If they keep on persisting as I walk away, I'll just speak a bunch of gibberish in French since it's unlikely they'll be able to understand a word I'm saying anyway.

I've never had the opportunity to meet any of these aggressive donation collectors, but someone find me one on a day I'm not busy and I'll implore this little plan of mine...

First I'll walk up to them and ask them in broken english with a heavy chinese accent "you riking to donating to china rerief funding?" At which point they'll give me a puzzled look. As they ask me whether I'd like to donate to their phillipines earthquake 2012 zombie apocalypse charity, I'll keep asking brushing them off with "NO NO! YOU HAVE TO DONATING THE MONEY TO THE CHINA CHARITY, MORE PEOPLE IN CHINA LA, NEED MORE MONEY LAAA." Of course this is a rinse and repeat process until they simply get bored and walk off, at which point I begin to follow them, asking for spare change.

If they don't have spare change I'll ask for paper money and say "you go to bank and withdrawering the money, I coming with you la." Assuming these people have any sort of temper, they'll be annoyed with me at this point. But I'll keep following, disrupting them from asking other people for donations by asking those people whether they'd like to donate to my CHINA fund, while the entire time pestering them with "DONATION PREAAASEEE, I RIKING THE MONEYYY, PREASEE DONATING TO THE CHINA".

This will keep going until they decide to finally flip out on me (pun intended), whereupon I'll hold out my hand in a STOP motion, dig my hand deep into my pocket, and throw some pennies at their feet. I'll then proceed to turn around and walk away.

-He was studying at the library, deaf guy walks around putting leaflets on ppls desks. Buddy looks up with a WTF look, nudges it off his desk with his pen on to the floor, wont even touch it with his hand, and continues studying. Deaf guy has super pissed look in his face, my buddy looks at him expressionless, goes back to studying.

-Bum harasses him as he goes into mcd's for food, buddy says no, bum mouths him off. buddy orders a water, and on the way out throws it in the bums face and books it.

-Lady asks for change, buddy says he only has coins, lady says thats ok. My buddy has a handful of pennies and nickels, shows it to her and tosses them on the floor. He watches her pick them up with a look of disgust on his face and walks away.

I honestly have respect for the homeless. i have had my experiences in either getting a "thank you", "God Bless you" or being mouthed off for lying or holding off. I realize that its not nice to mouth off ppl especially when your asking for change but give these guys a break. They are going through hardship right now and some are mentally, physically stressed or beyond stressed. Id like to see any of you hold a smile everyday and be the most polite person when your down in the dumps and out of your luck. Most of us throw a hissy fit already just because someone rips us off or short changes us. imagine what these guys are going through, EVERYDAY!

When i was young i ran away from home and didnt know where to go. It was the middle of winter and i immaturely ran away without taking any extra clothes, jackets, etc to keep me warm. I decided to go to stanley park where i know my parents wouldnt look not knowing that it was freakin cold there. I slept at a bench freezing my ass off that night but when i woke up the next morning i was wrapped in a very warm, comfy blanket with a pillow on my head and right below me was a homeless man sleeping on the concrete with nothing but his jacket and dog beside him. I left the man with whatever money i had left ($60 if i remember correctly) as a sign of appreciation but i gained respect for these people.

if i walk to downtown and see a homeless man asking for change, i give what i can but if i dont have any i simply say im sorry i dont have change. whether i get mouthed off or simply ignored i just walk by and mind my own business. There is no need to act all tough and think your a big man by making these ppl feel miserable. If your easily hurt by their "words" then i got news for you buddy, you lack confidence!

If you guys go to Rome/Paris often then you'll know this is a pretty common sight in all major tourist locations.

They'll usually have a form to sign up, then when you get suckered into signing it they ask for money.

Just learn to ignore it, and/or get the news onto them. If they're in the paper, they'll usually go away or more often transform to a different type of scam.

Hmm, I lived near the Joyce and Kingsway area and haven't encountered these Flip Ladies yet. Hope not to either. However, there is this other older Chinese Guy scammer around the area. He will approach you, and 1st question is, 'Are you Chinese'? Then, he might say his car is dead, needs a jump start, blah blah blah..and of course, in the end, will ask for a couple of bucks to take the bus home. Do NOT give him any money.
I'm trying to encounter him again actually, to take a photo of him. I'm pretty damn sure I can snap the photo and outrun him. I think you guys should do the same with these Flip Ladies, so we know who they are. And even tell them that you're bringing the photo to the cops, if they don't stop harassing you.

good on you bro

I remember encountering these Filipino ladies a couple of years ago. I'm Filipino myself and hearing these stories pisses me off. The problem with Filipinos is that whatever education they received in the Philippines is usually not recognized in Canada. For those that do come here, they have no choice but to get into the fast food industry or an entry level job.

It irritates me that they come to Canada for a better life, only to scam hardworking people. If they want to come here, make an honest living and provide for those that need it. Get an education here and break the stereotype. It's a privilege to be in Canada and I try to make the most of it. Next time I encounter one of these scammers, I'm gonna call them out on it and tell them they are a disgrace to Filipinos.

Holy shit, I think I know who you're talking about.

Two years ago, when I walked off the skytrain, he asked me if I was Chinese. I said yes and he told me he needed bus fare money to see his daughter or something. Unknowingly, I got suckered in giving him two and when I was walking back home, I was like wait... wtf? God damnit.

My buddy used to get approached all the time; his moves are legendary because they were all spur of the moment. None of this pre-planning.

That's not legendary, that's fucking retarded.

I had no idea this thread existed. LOL some of you are already too nice. I've learned to deal with pushy assholes through my time working in retail. I've put my mean streak to good use.

...and that was before I knew for sure they were a scam. :lol

I've encountered them three times.

The first time, they came up to me, I tried to walk away but they kept getting in front of me, begging me to give them a donation. I was on the phone too. One said "You have nice shoes. I bet those were expensive. Some of these kids don't even have shoes."

I stopped, waited about 10 seconds in dead silence and looked her right in the eye. (Ask Slif if you want the story of how I did that...for a full minute...once.)

"Fuck. Off."

The second time was at a restaurant with my friends on my birthday. Nothing too interesting...I was with my friends and didn't want to make a scene. They yelled at us "Don't you care about the children!?" and I said "Of course not." The restaurant manager came and booted them.

The third time, I decided to fuck with them a little bit and asked the beggar to tell me a little about what they were doing. I wasn't really listening...just thinking about what I should say.

"So give us money." (No, seriously, that's what she said.)

"Okay, so how long before they're delivered?"

"Delivered?"

"Yeah, you're selling children, right?"

"...what?"

"Hey, lady...my sweatshop doesn't run itself. Maybe they could do some gardening or cleaning too."

I was going to say "Yeah, 425 degrees for two hours and some hot sauce, they are delicious." but I didn't think she would understand.

In a situation like this, that's when you just pull a baseball bat out and walk towards them with a ready to swing look.

If I was the boss,I would have said to them...."you can leave on your own or leave in a ambulance".

Two times when I went to watch a movie at the Scotia theatre some white guy comes by and begs for money for a train or he says he missed some train to some unkown part of BC. 30-40 year old woman said that "You have very fancy clothes, you know that some children in the Philippines don't even have clothes to change each day." She proceeded to tell me that my jacket looks expensive and asked how much it cost me.

I smiled and said "More than you can afford pal. Armani"

I've encountered "deaf" beggars. They're the ones going around handing out a card that says their deaf, and to give them money. I just give 'em back the card. If only people would stop giving to panhandlers, then maybe there wouldn't be so many of them. What sickens me are the ones wearing decent clothing, and shoes that panhandle intersections. There's a guy I see periodically downtown, when I see him in the summer he's usually shirtless and wiry-strong with a dark tan. He's pushing a shopping cart around and picking up bottles and cans. Never asks for money, never bothers anyone. I've gotten him food and given him money before-- I'd rather the people who aren't begging "professionally" get it.

There's one old guy he hangs out on Howe right in front of the TD usually; he has a kind of desperation act, "Please won't anyone HELP me! I'm just so...PLEASE?!" Kind of thing. Lo and behold, I talk to a friend who works at a sushi place two blocks away and she says he's a regular, always ordering the expensive stuff. Not that I gave him money before, but...

I feel real bad this time of the year and it's all because of all the scammer's we have to deal with day after day. You have been hearing it over the news in the past week or so about how donations are down this year. I think it's mainly because the general public is getting sick of tired of dealing with these fucktards and feel that it's almost impossible to trust anyone this day and age.

I personally think that if you feel sorry for these people make sure you make a donation to a reputable organization and you know your money's going to be going to the correct needs and not some drug habit or so the scammer can buy a new BMW. If people stopped giving these people cash the ones who need it will go to the places where they will get what they need. The sad thing is there will always be scammers and this day and age you can't trust anyone with what they tell you :(

I got pissed off after being pestered for the 3rd time, and told a store clerk that they were bugging customers and soliciting for money. They got the boot out of the store and when they walked by, one of them made a nasty face at me (she saw me talked to the store clerk). Classy.:failed:

I got real quiet and looked at the ground. I bit my lip and pretended to hold back tears.

I said that my parents were on a Christian mission in the south Philippines and were killed by the Moro Resistance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moro_National_Liberation_Front) while I was back home in college. I said that I had no idea why they were killed by the very people they were trying to help.

Then I strolled away a'la "Haters gonna hate"

The longer they chase you, the less time they can harass the next RSer.

i saw them down at the buck, in steveston, on thursday night...they all jumped out of a brand new van.... before they could say anything as the mob approached the people outside.

" you guys should sell your new van" - the one lady said "why would we do that".... all i said was

"Come on, do it for the children"

i proceeded to point in the other direction and they took teh hint and got back into the van and left.

oh fuck i just got a great idea for a contest....

if you get approached, pull out your phone and film it. then we vote on who screws with them the most in the most creative way.

EG: wasting their time, make them follow you, pretending you don't understand english but try to keep em hooked, make them repeat themselves endlessly (act like you're deaf but trying to understand, pretend to be retarded, asking them for money for parking, beer, whores instead etc. nothing cruel or physical, just fuck with them.

probably best to get a friend to record and keep yourself off camera.

post a youtube link of your exploit.

the two girls suddenly barged in.
i acted like a fob, dunno english, and they ignore me.
my friend ignore them, one of them keep shoving the 'donation postcard' to him.

it was pretty much blank-range distance that my friend would shove a cigarette at their eyes.

i've seen these pieces of shit around before but not sure when i will see them again to try this:

1. act concerned and pull out wallet to retrieve a $100 bill
2. offer to donate $75 if they would give you $25 change (so I can take my mother out for lunch)
3. take their $25 and either: a.) run like hell or b.) "what $25?"
4. ????
5. profitss

I'd love to scam the scammers.

I hope someone tries this and gets some $$$ from them.

Squamish today. Philipino beggers!

I came back from a test drive in a customers car, pull into the lot and notice these 2 asian ladies walking from my shop to the street. as I pull they in they flocked to me. I assumed maybe it was the customer so I rolled the window down and they forced this peice of paper into my face and asked if I wanted to help asia, mainly the philipines. I said no, they told me they would take change so I told them I knew all about their scam and asked what brought them to squamish.

They took off pretty quick!

never thought they would come up here hahahah

LOL I like the idea of getting them to give you cash back and then taking it from their hands and running off.
Another way to scare them off is take their fake cards and just don't give it back..and see what they do.
For me, I've seen people being scammed, but never been convinced enough or had the time.

They will never get a decent job, why? Most of them have illegal or do not have the proper paperwork to be here in canada. Worse is most of them do civil weddings just an excuse and easy eay on getting PR card to stay. Would seriously want them to be deported and black listed.
