Hobby Shops in the GVRD
CorneringArtist

locally, theres only a hand full of shops i know of that sells gundams, imperial hobbies have a limited selection, magic box hobbies have a slightly bigger selection than imperial, but prices r a tad bit more expensive, and the 3rd/4th shop is located in crystal mall, right beside the elevator. there is a gift shop that have a large selection of gundam, and another corner shop piggy backing this gift shop that sells gundams only, but this piggy back shop is open on weekends only.
as for prices, i find the crystall mall shops comparable to online sites from the states, usually just $5 more, so if u factor in shipping it'll cost more to buy from states.
as for over seas, i have not tried yet, but big sites like hobby link japan and 1999.co is sometimes half the price of the kits here
All my kits were bought through Hobby Search/1999.co.jp. Shipping averages out to 8 dollars, and most newer kits are easily available. 15 dollars for a HG Kampfer Amazing kit that JUST released this month. Seems that it's difficult to find gundam kits in Vancouver that aren't super outdated :okay:
^nice........... must have, now!

For those of you who are looking for a scale model of the Subaru BRZ (Street Custom), Tamiya has a new kit out now.

New Tamiya items are in monthly release news - follow link below

As for plane models, Zoukei Mura has released the Horton and is available through their Japan site. Not sure about their US site.
http://www.zoukeimura.co.jp/en/products/sws08_Ho229horten.html
EDIT: nvm, it is available from their US site, Volks USA.
These models sell out fast. Once gone, expect to pay a lot of money when eBay becomes only option. The Shinden model I wanted sold out very quickly. I could have purchased it for just under 100 bucks. They are going for an average of 200 bucks.
Imperial Hobbies 25% off sale all week.
Magic Box is also having their Boxing Day sale. 20% off everything. Their prices aren't inflated like Imperial so about the same. I'm going to load up on Tamiya primer paint.

LED Lighting as in the strips that you can cut to length or individual LED lights.
Or, do you mean the kind where you use fibre optics........ I plan on putting lights on my USS Voyager scale model.

i was wondering if anyone here has made their own waterslide decals before?
Inkjet Decal Paper (http://www.decalpaper.com/category-s/2.htm)
not sure what to get. this is for automotive diecast stuff.
backstory: i bought this a few years back as a commisioned build online. it's a 1/18 motormax unmarked that was done up to be a gotham police department crown vic from the last movie of the trilogy:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/11066784_10153158477743134_2177229742122254154_n.j pg?oh=cee1e3cdf4a85f9f8029b11da55103b2&oe=55837368&__gda__=1433431063_4d99c7bfe6e6f3ae1556a02c7dac3e6 f
but the work was not up to par, with bad paint and the custom decals are coming apart (eg. the "police" logo on the rear door) :(
so i'm going to suck it up and try to redo everything on my own. i want to strip off the decals and try to wetsand the paint, recreate the waterslide decals and then clear over them... at least that is the plan?
i've also never clearcoated over decals before successfully. when i used to build plastic kits i tried it once and the clear ate up the decals... not sure where i went wrong

bringing this back up from the dead again.
does anyone know of the local shop that does chrome/black chrome plating for plastic? it might have been a hydrographics business. i remember seeing them advertising their services at a model exhibition a many years back but i've since lost their business card. i was hoping a modeler here might know who i'm talking about. i think they were based in coquitlam or poco.
Imperial Hobbies 25% off everything in store sale starts Friday and goes a whole week. They're calling it their moving sale as they are moving to their new location near the airport mid September.

gonna revive this thread here by asking a question to fellow hobbyist.
Has anyone ever used/encountered/heard about this brand of airbrush? The Perfect Airbrush Kit (http://www.stratusairbrush.com/)
Its local but i cant see any reviews on them. Im looking for an airbrush with mini compressor cuz i dont want a huge compressor inside my apartment and they seem to fit what i need exactly but i dont know if their good or not.
anyone got any experience?
thanks for the reminder........... I need to sign up for body tanning classes, hee hee.
All kidding aside, I have not heard of this brand. Nowhere on their site do they have specs as to how fine a spray you can get and so on. I use Iwata airbrushes and compressor - very pleased with their products. I would like to see a Stratus airbrush in person. If only they had some kind of retail outlet or a list of places that carry their product.
Judging by the pics, the brushes are gravity feed and most likely dual action trigger.
Zokei Mura is taking pre orders for the 1/32 scale model of the German Do335 A-O Pfeil.
Damn, push/pull design. Those Germans, eh?
Check out the rest of their lineup. My favourite is the Shinden Canard design plane, where the props are in the rear of the plane.
Their P51 Mustang is just nuts. Quality all around.

I have both the 1/32 and 1/48 versions, AND the goofy Anime version called, "Ah My Goddess." At the time, the first production of the plane sold out within a month. They later came out with the goofy one, but it had all the same parts as the original. Then they came out with the 1/48 version. Got that as soon as it was announced. Then, recently, they did a second run of the original. None of the kits have been built yet.
I still have three battleships, three carriers, and five heavy cruisers in 1/350 scale, eight 1/32 scale planes and a dozen or so 1/35 scale German WWII armour still waiting to be built. There's not enough hours in a day, days in a year, years in a lifetime, lol.
Oh, forgot the Star Trek models........... LED light kits planned for all.

Did not know this until a couple of months ago. Burnaby Hobbies on Rumble, near Royal Oak is a retail partner of Zoukei-Mura. So you can get their stuff locally. Sort of, as they don't carry all of the models. Last I heard, you could order through them, though.

Also, Imperial Hobbies is having their Anniversary Sale is on the 19th, 20th, and 21st of August.
I'm assuming it's the usual 25% off everything in the store, sale.
Going to stock up on top loaders and sleeves, not for a card collection, but for my stamps.
BTW, Canadian Tire had a 50% off sale on their dust and waterproof cases last week and I got the medium one on Thursday. Not only great for storing tools, but also for collectors and hobbyists.

is there any way of saving this?
Search for "polishing mylar". Not sure if your buddy is willing to take the chance. I'm assuming individual parts cannot be ordered like you can with plastic model kits (Tamiya, Hasegawa, etc.).

The new place is huge!
I miss the old place, but they had no choice. It had character, for sure.
As for the inventory, way more variety. I guess their miniature selection increased by a fair bit. I noticed a few Tamiya paint colours missing. I always stock up on Tamiya Fine Primer during the sale events, but they did not have the white. Lots of grey, light grey, pink, and rust.

By opening, the line up went around side of building. There was an Iwata Eclipse airbrush on sale for pretty close to half price. I would have snatched it up, but I have that model and two other entry level Iwata's. I'm going back to buy more Tamiya paints after I take inventory of what I have at home. I went last night at closing and bought a clearance priced Ferrari 355 Challenge Fujimi kit... couple shades of Testor's metallics for airbrush spraying and some MTG boosters of the new set... lots of people in there, dude in front of me must have bought 30 packs of $2.00 miniature soldiers amongst other stuff... $350 total and apparently it was his 2nd and much smaller haul of the day... lol...
Hey MG1, what compressor do you use for your airbrushing?
I use an Iwata Silver Jet
http://www.iwata-medea.com/products/compressors/silver-jet/
I bought it used off some chick who took make-up classes at one of the colleges. It came with an Iwata top feed airbrush. It was very lightly used, as in, she probably didn't make it past week one, lol. Off CL, BTW. Apparently these things go on sale right after these types of classes are over. When you take these classes, you buy the tools of the trade at a good discount.
Anyway, I want to take some airbrush tanning classes............ hee hee. I'll fail the classes over and over on purpose. But, knowing my luck, I'll end up tanning male body builders in class. :heckno:
Around the same time, I got me one of these bad boys off CL for 240 bucks. It came with a whole bunch of extra filters and rolls of liners.

That's pretty awesome! I actually disassembled a Nike shoe box and am using that as my spray booth right now hahaha... I just started, I bought one of those super cheapass Testor's airbrushes for like $13.00 with a Michael's 50% coupon a few weeks back... using the compressed air can that came with it I sprayed a Kyosho Mini-Z Ferrari 355 blank shell that I had... it actually turned out pretty good I think? Only a tiny bit of orange peel. It was the first time I ever airbrushed anything... but I can see that the spray power from the compressed air can is very unstable as you can only go in bursts to avoid super cooling the can... nevermind the fact cans are expensive lol... better to get a little compressor. I'm concerned about noise though living in an apartment!
That iwata model doesn't have a tank does it? You don't get uneven air from it? Looks nice and compact!
It has a very even output.
I suppose you can borrow an air pig from somebody. Put in about 150 psi and regulate the output. Should last a long time, as in 90 minutes of spraying or more.
I've used my regular tank compressor before (with compressor off and only using tank pressure) and it works fine. You're only using 15 - 25 psi or so at the airbrush, so it should give you plenty. I recommend the air tank method for anyone who lives in an apartment. Zero noise, ftmfw!
Also, no matter how careful you are, overspray will be all over the place. Even with my spray booth, I wear a mask. Not a cheapie mask, but a good one. Your health is worth the time, money, and effort. The cheapest method would be to go get a half face mask from KMS Tools or Summit Tools (either 3M or North) and buy the right filters. The masks go on sale for 10 bucks sometimes. Filters are the expensive part at around 20 -25 bucks.
https://www.kmstools.com/north-half-mask-respirator-with-elastomeric-facepiece-13381
Oh, look what I found.......
https://www.kmstools.com/north-2pk-cartridge-style-p100-filters-17375
I don't use those, since I have the 3M half mask and I'm not sure if the filter would do the job. Hey, it's better than filling up your lungs with nasty stuff.
Air pigs or portable air tanks...........
http://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/10-gallon-portable-air-tank/A-p8474942e
The Princess Auto one goes on sale for around 50 - 60 bucks and if you know someone from Lordco, you could probably get a Performance Tool one for pretty cheap.
They show up on CL once in a while, too.
I just got back from Imperial Hobbies. Went to check out their Gundam model selection. I wanted something nice. A perfect grade. I've only built one Gundam before this and it was a Master Grade something - it came with an Amuro Ray thing. It was fairly straight forward, so a Perfect Grade makes sense. Anyway, I broke down and bought a Ban Dai, Perfect Grade 1/60 Ashtray. Looks cool and comes with what looks like a nice Samurai Sword.
Also bought me an Iwata airbrush cleaning kit. It comes with a nozzle tool and a plastic carrying case. Those two items alone was worth getting the kit.

Thanks I picked up those masks from KMS... Live in Richmond so just paid the $9 Purolator shipping haha probably cheaper than gas driving to one and back!
Damn..... just opened the Perfect Grade Kit and wow, so many parts, LOL. Unlike traditional models, this shit requires the parts to be absolutely free of any sprue remnants and sanding is a must. The trade off is no gluing of parts.
I'm just going to have to break down and get me a Gods Hand nipper so I don't spend half my time sanding.

Vancouver Hobbies is based out in Galiano Island and seem to be very good with customer relations.
Go Go Hobbies in Coquitlam is the best place for RC supplies, locally. You can't beat talking to live people about your hobby. They'll give you the time of day and are very well informed.

God Hand plastic cutters arrived a few weeks ago. Used them for the first time yesterday. My god (pun intended), these cutters are amazing. ZOUKEI-MURA Inc. (http://www.zoukeimura.co.jp/en/)
doh. where i bought my xurons lol. but then i told them i was only cutting plastic parts off sprue so they did not recommend yours...
The God Hand cutters go for 80+ bucks CAD. I happened to get mine off eBay for $59.00 USD with free shipping from a seller in Japan. Right now, Amazon.ca $115 bucks, lol. Amazon.com $51.19 plus free shipping.
https://www.amazon.com/God-Hand-SPN-120-Ultimate-Nipper/dp/B00T5IH8PI
As for the Zoukei Mura cutters, they aren't cheap, either. I'm not sure if Burnaby Hobbies has them in stock. Perhaps special order.
Just a reminder, these cutters are not for normal cutting. They are extremely sharp, but not strong. They are not meant for cutting sprues or thick plastic. I use my handy Tamiya cutters to get parts off the main sprue, then nip the leftover nub using the God Hand.

i don't understand the amazon.com/.ca thing with regards to the huge price differences... i've even seen it happen with the same seller listed on both sites excluding shipping :(
It's really mind boggling.
However, there have been the odd time, shit has been cheaper on the .ca site. Rare, but it happens.

Just released............
SWS 1/48 scale McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom ? | Zoukei-mura Inc. (http://www.zoukeimura.co.jp/en/products/sws48_04_f4j.html)
Burnaby Hobbies is a partner store. I wonder how much it will cost and how long it will take to get them in.
Went to Imperial Hobbies yesterday. Boxing Week sale still on. Anyway, looking through the Tamiya tool section when I spot this..........
1/35 Scale U.S. M40 Metal Gun Barrel Set (http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/12670/index.htm)
I look at the packaging and it looks like the newer type. Then I go over to the Armour section and see this...........
1/35 U.S. Self-Propelled 155mm Gun M40 (http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/35351/index.htm)
I had no choice but to get it, LOL.
It will go well with the Tamiya 1/35 scale German Nashorn I got last year. http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/35335/index.htm
Oh, I also went to Burnaby Hobbies and an F-4J Phantom by Zoukei-Mura is slated to arrive early January. Going to be a busy 2017.

Does Burnaby hobbies have boxing day/week sales usually? This is the first year I've gotten into scale model cars so I've never checked them for sales before.
They don't participate in sales all that much and they didn't have a boxing day sale. They do have one some time late in the year, but I think it didn't happen this year or I missed it. The owner decides when and if.
The place has been hit multiple times, as in broken into. Constantly having to repair, restock, etc. No time to get stuff in order. I will start shopping there more often. I think the place needs support from the modelling community. I'd hate to see the place go.
Everytime I'm in there the owner is talking up a storm with customers and knows lots of people by name. Feels very personal.
I've been going there for all my painting supplies and a few kits. The markup over online prices for the kits I've been looking at haven't been much more than if I ordered through HJL or Hobby Search myself.
Definitely a local business I'd like to continue to support.

i try to go there regardless of sales... i don't want to see it go either :(
the last time they got broken into someone drove a stolen truck through the front display window which is why it's got all those barricades now. and then it took months to fix and restock because the insurance company dragged it out... bastards
when I was in there just before christmas the owner was telling me how the heater unit just broke too.
That's why my balls were freezing the day I went. My fault for not dressing warmly, lol. That Zoukei-Mura plane is mine. Don't any of you think of getting it. I'm sure he's getting in more than one, hee hee. Such a nice model. Actually, all their models are top shelf. This will be my fifth one, but none built yet.
Was at Burnaby Hobbies to pick up my Zoukei Mura 1/48 F-4J Phantom.

Damn, it's amazing. Price was very decent at $135.00.
They also had a Zoukei-Mura Pro-Zetsu cutter there. After I talked to another customer about how good the cutting pliers were, he bought it right away. I also mentioned about how it is almost as good as the "God Hand" cutting pliers. Owner goes, "I'm working on getting them, too." For $70.00 to $75.00 each. Damn!
At $58.00 CAD, the Pro-Zetsu cutting pliers are very decent.
If you're into small scale modelling, especially Gundam, these two cutting pliers are a must have tool.

i don't remember if you have done this but do you have any pics of your builds?
Actually, I don't. They're for my eyes only, lol.
I never share, but I do stop to admire them once in a while. Like my extensive stamp collection. I bring them out of storage now and then and just get lost in it all.
Not only that, most of my models are still in boxes. The retooled 1/350 scale Tamiya Yamato I started four, maybe five years ago, for example, still sits on my work table 4/5 complete, collecting dust. Maybe I should stop going to the casinos and get back to finishing it.............. if I can remember where I put all the parts.

google sent me to volks. i was trying to see if there is anywhere local that had it because burnaby hobbies near me does not have it. online it's like $17-24 so far.
The Vancouver IPMS show has come and gone. I went to the swap meet and walked out with zero, and I'm not talking about the Imperial Japanese Mitsubishi Zero.
I haven't touched a model in such a long time. I'm afraid I've become a model kit collector.
I was about to take on the Perfect Grade Ashtray I purchased at last year's Imperial Hobbies sale, but one look at the instructions and all the parts,I put it back in the box, lol.
Anyway............

It's been a while since the last update.

On-line ordering is simple and painless, but there's nothing like going into a store and getting the item you want. Burnaby Hobbies carries Zoukei Mura products. As mentioned before in this thread, you have to try the nippers from Zoukei Mura. It's on par or better than the God Hand cutters that I have. I use the Tamiya cutters for larger parts and the Zoukei Mura and God Hand for smaller pieces. I'm eyeing the file mentioned in the blog.

Imperial Hobbies Customer Appreciation Sale starts today and goes for three days. 25% off minimum, store wide. Time to stock up on primers, paints, brushes, model kits, miniatures, etc. I'm running low on Top Loaders for my stamp collection, lol. Not meant for it, but acid free, clear, and easy to sort through = best method - being able to see the, all important, condition of the gum side. When undisturbed, pristine condition of the gum raises the value of the stamp by up to 200%, yeah, it's important. Besides, handling the stamp more than you need to, increases the chances of damage. This way, I can protect my investments and actually enjoy viewing them.
Yeah...... too much time on my hands.

Imperial Hobbies is having their annual Customer Appreciation Week. I'm not into models that much these days, but was looking for Tamiya Single Use CA Glue. I called Imperial and they didn't have it in stock....... actually, they never do - always sold out.
Did a google search and lo and behold, a place in Burquitlam had one. And for a good price, to boot. A place called Ages 3+ Up. I sort of remember seeing this place before in Lougheed Mall, but they closed down........... so I thought.
They just moved. The strip mall on the corner of North Road and Lougheed Hwy.
Anyway, they have the full line up of Tamiya paints and tools. God Hand products. Not just the pliers but other stuff. Mr. Hobby Creos, etc.
Anyway, here's the link to their website.

Getting ready to start up modelling again. I went into the rape dungeon last night to see if the airbrush station was still working properly. I then noticed this........
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhQ5EODo-gY
Damn, I never cleaned it the last time I used it. I take care of my airbrushes, so no worries there. I have spare parts and everything is taken apart and stored properly. I just need to find the cleaning liquids and lubricating solutions. Iwata Media, ftmfw!
Believe it or not, the most enjoyment I get from airbrushing is the cleaning part. Don't know why, but taking the airbrushes apart and taking time to get it spotless and getting the shine back on the finish is so oddly satisfying. I don't own guns, but I imagine cleaning your weapons is just as cool.
Imperial Hobbies Boxing Week is coming up. The store is limiting the number of customers to 25 at any given time. I haven't gone in a couple of years. I'm retired with nothing better to do.
I was at Coquitlam Centre today and saw this RC place and it reminded me of Go Go Hobbies. I was wAndering what happened to the place because everytime I drive by the place it is closed and looks abandoned. I tried calling them today. I actually got through. The store has been closed for over a year due to the owner having health issues. Then Covid (fuck that virus), hit and it added to the problems.
Long story short, they are open, but only on weekends. They started opening not that long ago. They are closed tomorrow and Saturday, but will be open on Sunday.
EDIT: This is Go Go Hobbies, btw. Not the RC place in Coquitlam Centre. Just saw this post again and realized it could be confusing. Anyway, carry on carrying on.
I'm surprised, with Covid and all, that nobody has started up with their hobbies. Whether it be RC, Gundam, static modelling, etc.
I subscribe to Hobby Search Japan and they send me updates on new models and such. I found this under Anime Robot/SFX.

Both mini trucks don't have remotes. How hard would it be to get remotes for them? I'll use any remote if it's doable.
The two bigger trucks take 9v 006 packs. Easy to grab from a local store? Also they share one remote. Would it be easy to buy another remote and be able to operate them separately with two said remotes?
The last one (not pictured which is a Radio Shack Wild Horse) requires a 9.6v pack. I'm guessing these packs are all standard sizing?
Thanks
