Hobby Shops in the GVRD
I mentioned this before, but I started getting back into small scale modelling. Things have changed quite a bit since I was a young lad. Anyway, I went to this year's IPMS show
http://ipmsvancouver.ca/
Saw a lot of great stuff and bought a few kits at their swap meet. I've visited a lot of hobby shops in the Lower Mainland, Lower Fraser Valley, and even Washington. I've compiled a list of places. Please add any I have not been to with description of what they have to offer.
One Stop Hobbies in Abbotsford (South Fraser Way)
Urban Samurai (Lougheed Mall)
Go Go Hobbies (2124 Austin Avenue, Coquilam)
Burnaby Hobbies (Rumble and Royal Oak)
Apollo Hobbies (Lougheed and Production Way)
Central Hobbies (Broadway and Renfrew)
Sakura media (Metrotown)
Toys Planet (Crystal Mall)
Imperial Hobbies (No. 3 Road across from Landsdowne Mall)
On Track (Port Moody)
I've been to a lot more, but have to go atm. Can someone point me to any places in New West, Richmond, and Surrey?
Hobbywave sounds like a good place for Gundam, but they do not have a store front - damn.

magic box hobbies - W Boulevard and w37th.. i think. its right beside a seven eleven.. cant miss it.
wings corner, richmond public market - theyre only selling old stock/ whats left over.. so not alot of new stuff there.
i forgot the name of the shop in new west.. its a block away from the police station or behind it. on a hill.... its not hard to find at all.. i think its on sixth street and columbia..
i remember from a post that you're looking for miltary models..? haha. just like my dad. builds the same stuff and my house is full of it.
or buy online. www.hlj.com
Cool............ thanks.
Yeah, I was hoping this thread will be about model building as well. I am going to the place in Richmond Public Market today sometime. I will swing by the place on 37th as well. I completed a Gundam model in the summer. So cool the way shit just snaps together - so detailed. I'm totally into Tamiya Craft Tools. So nice. And their models are so easy to put together. I bought a King Tiger kit made by Dragon Model Company. It came with photo etched parts and this and that and it seemed like a helluva good deal at the time, but in the end Tamiya wins by a long shot. Right now I am starting the IJN Yamato - Tamiya 1/350. Purchased a Lion Roar Photo etch upgrade kit. Holy crap, it's going to take me over a year to finish it (properly).
Anyway, off I go on a hobby store run, LOL. I love weekends.........

There's a hobby store in richmond @ continental where the TD bank is, sexsmith and cambie?
Aviation world might have what you're looking for too it's right by the airport near gilbert I think
There's one aviation hobby store in downtown near waterfront so if you hopped on the canada line you could get there pretty easy, but I'm not sure if it's closed I'll ask my cousin for the name I haven't been there in over 5 years

goodluck putting the dragon tank kits together.. seperate track links.
my dad had a helluva time putting together the tracks for the elefant.. and the zermmit (sp?) surface could easily chip the paint off..
i went to a few hobby shops in hk.. and you wont believe the price on their tamiya tank 1/35 kits... not too old of a kit.. but $12 cdn.... for King tiger porsche turret version, Jagdpanther, Panther type G, M1-A2... dirt cheap.

There's also one in Union Square (on Capstan Way) where Richmond Sushi is. Enter Union Square on Capstan Way, and the store should be on the top right corner of the first intersection that you get to.

Yeah, the Magic Track is pretty fucked up stuff. I got it all put together and gave up on the rest. It's put away in the box. All parts painted, but the instructions were horrible and the parts didn't fit very well. Fine detail is great, but when shit doesn't fit it's frustrating. I see what you mean by the Zimmerit. I'm gonna wait for the next Imperial Hobbies sale and go for the Tamiya 1/35 Jagdtiger. I think it comes with some PE parts and choice of two track systems.
Yeah, HK prices on Tamiya stuff is ridiculously low. Model kits of any kind are duty free. I've been ordering Tamiya Craft tools from a guy in HK via eBay. Even with the shipping, it comes out less than here. Plus, they have the stuff in stock. Here, nobody seems to want to order it. One Stop Hobbies and Go Go Hobbies are the only places that would even entertain the thought of getting Tamiya Tools in for me. And you wonder why people buy out of country. I would really love to support local businesses, but when your service sucks, what do you expect?
Back to Tamiya Craft Tools. Man, this stuff is so high quality. It's like comparing Snap On tools to Power Fist or Mastercraft. Files that actually work. Side cutters that actually cut the sprues off so cleanly you don't need to sand much. I recently purchased a Tamiya battery operated hobby drill. NICE!!!

I built this a couple years back. Since then I think the model building scene has really died down. I find myself playing more with cars these days just because of the lack of friend's to share the experience with.
A good friend of mine recently started a forum for the Vancouver area for model builders. Feel free to check it out:

Wow, pretty hard core.
I used to have a pretty awesome 1/700 waterline series collection of IJN models. They're still on the shelves I built in the basement of my mom's house. All of them are now missing masts, antennas, gun barrels, etc. from my mom dusting the things over the 40 plus years. She's old, so I can't freak out on her. My fault for not putting them in a case.
Your dad airbrushes in the house?
tofu1413
11-13-2010, 05:08 PM
my dad has quite a collection of the IJN fleet as well.. he told me how tamiya kits back then were easily bought at woodwards.. and were quite decently priced.
that is our glassed and roofed sundeck, so he airbrushes there.. its like his corner of the house to build his models.
he hasnt really built any recently though.
So, I went on a hobby store run today. Had some time on my hands. I went to Grand Prix Hobbies on Broadway. Wow, that place has totally gone downhill since I used to go there when I was a teenager. Waste of parking meter money. I then went to Magic Box. One word. NICE! Never knew the place existed until now. Nice people there. I then proceeded to the RC place on Cambie and Sexsmith. Nothing there but RC stuff, which is fine, but nothing there for me. Next, the place in Richmond Public Market. No go....... they were closed. WTF? On a Saturday? So, needing Mr. Color #28 Steel, 'cause I ran out of it painting the Dragon Magic Trcks and whatnot, I ended up at Imperial Hobbies. Spent 20 minutes with the blonde chick who works there trying to find the colour. Couldn't read Japanese. Anyway, we finally discovered it was #28. The only colour on the whole rack they were out of. FUCK!

IMO one of the best model shops in BC around at the time. It's long time closed, really went downhill when the new owners took over.
Kinda curious how you guys keep the building spirit up, just personal motivation?
Kinda curious how you guys keep the building spirit up, just personal motivation?
For me, it was 30+ years of not building models that motivated me. My daughter bought me a Gundam model this summer at AE. My eyes lit up and the passion for building models came back. I was intrigued not only by the way the models themselves have improved but by the way the people who build models have improved. So much detail and creativity.
I guess the Internet has helped a lot. I see these tutorials on You Tube and it blows me away how much work some of the pros put into their creations.
I started to get into air brushing. Wow, I suck at it, but it is definitely fun stuff.
I have a cool display case in my den and I love to stand and stare at my models, even though they are not that good. When you spend weeks or months on building something, you'd figure it'll become boring, but I can't wait to finish one and go onto another.
I love seeing other people's work. Your model that you posted a pic of is beautiful. That kind of stuff motivates me.

yep. the last time i went was when the original owner was still around.. awesome service and they have great product knowledge.. really helped with buying stuff from them.. that was a couple years ago..
i dont know. both my dad and I usually buy something to build because its an interesting subject, or something we've been waiting for to come out..
good example would be the MG Wing Gundam. waited years for that.

practice makes perfect.. hahaha. airbrushed camo > painted on camo. looks much better. then you gotta learn how to weather with a brush too.. so much stuff to learn, and lots to practice over the years.

Or, I can just build the models because I love putting things together. Photo etch scares me more than painting. I have this wonderful Lion Roar kit for the Yamato, but it seems so intricate and fragile. I'm gonna go blind working with it. I am starting to like the smell of glue and solvents, LOL.

well you dont have to keep buying.
several cases, i found my dad taking apart an older model, and take it apart, custom modify it a bit and repaint the thing.
its not necessary to buy new all the time...
and ther are several 1/72 airplanes that were built from scratch, using wood and glue... and some paint. haha

Got back from a couple of places. Sakura Media had Mr. Hobby paints for $1.99. Not much of a selection, but they had a couple of flat colours. I took the last two bottles each of German Grey and Dark Yellow and got a bottle of Mr. Color Thinner 400 for $11.99. I asked the dude if there were other hobby places around Metropolis. He tells me about Metropolis Comics and Collectibles - right across the street above the jewellery store. It was around 11:15 and the place opens at noon, so I go down to Best Buy to pass the time. At noon, I head back. There about 15 sweaty, geeky high school kids banging on the door. Apparently it was Yugioh day or something. LOL. The dude was late opening up. Nothing worse than haging out with a gaggle of geeky 15 year olds. Anyway, the place has a good selection of Tamiya paints and a very small selection of Mr. Hobby paints. About 6 or 7 different colours. Guess what? They had #28 steel that I was looking for. $2.49, to boot. Kind of makes me wonder why the hell I travel all the way to Richmond to buy Gunze paints from Impreial Hobbies at $3.99 a bottle.
I was contemplating going back to Wings Corner, but there's a chance they'll be closed again. Plus, today's game day.
Imperial Hobbies, Burnaby Hobbies, and Magic Box are having a Boxing Day sale. Any others? Go Go Hobbies, one of my favourite places to shop will not have one.

So this is Japan's version of famous WWII battleship evolved into space ship, like the USS Enterprise evolved to Star Trek Enterprise. Way too cool.
As a side note, thanks to tofu1413's reminder, I went to On Track Hobbies in PoCo. They won't be having a Boxing Day sale, but they have a buy one get equal or lesser value for 50% off promotion right now. Everything in store, I believe. These guys only close 3 days out of the year. Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Years. The owner of the store is a spitting image of Gordon Campbell. I shit you not. He could play Gordo's double in the upcoming, "I was a Dirty Politician" blockbuster movie. Anyway, you need a coupon from the Tri City News that came out at the beginning of the month. 50% off for second item translates into basically 25% off each item, so it isn't bad. Apparently, you can still get the coupon on-line at Tri City News.
Oh, almost forgot. Urban Samurai is having a Boxing Day Sale, too. 15 - 20% off. Not great, but if you're into that kind of stuff, Gundam, they have a good selection.

No, the Yamato is the actual WWII battleship that was made into a spaceship. The USS Enterprise in the Star Trek universe was an entirely different ship. The first ship with the name 'Enterprise" was a French navy ship that was captured by the British in 1705.

Huh? Oh, the story line, right. Never followed the anime with those things in it.

Then it wouldn't be USS Enterprise. The French frigate, then HMS Enterprise, then the USS Enterprise.
I was more or less talking about the use of the names in ficticious ships being cute. So, is there a Musashi? I bet there would be a Nagato (the admiral's ship, no less).
Name of anime series, please, so I can watch this stuff. Sounds interesting. Are you a hard core fan? Yes, I live under a rock.
BTW, I am totally into WWII IJN vessels. My favourite being the Amagiri. Pt 109 killer right there.

If you watch the Original Yamato series in Japanese, there are a bunch of ships that were named after WWII ships.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Battleship_Yamato
I have the Japanese series on DVD, but you can get the series in English under the name "Star Blazers."
I will have to check into it. Off to Parker Place to look for cheap knock off of series, LOL. Prepared to put up with ultra bad subtitles.

I googled it and there were 2 stores, Shamryn Hobbies and Pacific Scale Rail. On Pacific's site, it says the store is closed. I tried looking for a website. I went to Shamryn years ago when I was in college and needed to get supplies for the models I was making in the architecture program I was in.

They are now exclusively a model train store. They still have some plastic models lying around, but the guy told me he is getting out of the plastic model business. He said it like he despised plastic models. Made me feel like an outcast for mentioning plastic scale modeling. I almost told him to stick his little trains up his wazoo, but I was surrounded by railroaders.... kinda scary.

well, i remember him using some kind of liquid paint on masking tape.. i forgot what brand it was... pretty neat. its peelable after when its dry.
or if it was for bigger parts, say ship hulls, he just uses green painters tape.
as for airbrushing camos, hes been doing it for years, so he doesnt use any masking.

i dont think theres even a model for the BB6.. i do know Fujimi made a model for the older gen prelude though.. but very very few stores in town carry it... and i think the togue series kits are discontinued.. i somehow managed to grab the celica supra one locally.. :P
If any of you are wondering about hobby shops in New West, don't bother the two remaining shops are now gone. One of them closed because the dude retired. The other? Have no idea, but it's just gone. I drove around a few times then decided to go into a store nearby and hte lady there said. All gone.
I went on a hobby store run today. Went to J Hobby in Richmond. They were closed. Apparently, they have a pre Christmas sale on right now. 20 - 30% off. On till the 24th. I guess like a lot of places, they close on Monday. They only sell stuff imported directly from Japan - anime stuff (girls with big tits and skimpy outfits - not my bag). I then proceeded to Imperial Hobbies to scout out stuff. It's 25% off everything in the store on Boxing Day - actually all week. After that, I headed to Magic Box. They will be having a 20% off everything Boxing Day Sale. As for model kits, I will most likely end up ordering from Go Go Hobbies. They can get stuff for close to what the HK eBay people sell kits for with shipping.

Sorry for thread jack, didnt' want to start another one.
Anyone know where I can find an RC car for drifting? Something similar to a Tamiya TT-01? I don't know anything about RC cars or where to get them.
IIRC, there's a shop at Admiralty in Richmond?

Just bumping this thread because I'm bored out of my gourd.
I now shop exclusively at Go Go Hobbies in Coquitlam. They're more into RC cars and shit, but I found out they can get all kinds of things for plastic modelers. Tamiya tools and shit for a lot lower price than Imperial or anywhere else. Pretty damn quickly too.
Good selection of Tamiya paints, too. Best price on spray paints. On top of that, nice guys. Open on Sundays! Monday they are closed - oh well.

nothing new sir.
i did drive by go go hobbies though.
They don't have much stock in the plastic model section, but I like the fact I can order anything for a lot less than even eBay or HK. Plus, it usually arrives in about a week. I've ordered all kinds of tools and whatnot from HK suppliers and have been happy, but it takes a while for the stuff to arrive.
Anyway, my skills are improving. Airbrushing is so cool. Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks?

If you're looking for military and automotive model kits the place to go is Cameo Hobbies in Maple Ridge. Probably the best selection in the lower mainland and about the best prices too. They also buy collections, so they have a lot of discontinued and rare stuff. Loads of supplies (tools, paint etc.) as well.

Iwase Books in Yaohan Centre is closing its doors for good.
http://www.iwasebooks.com/
Iwase is a Japanese bookstore that carries Gundam models and, of course, books. Stationery, car magazines, DVD's etc. I found out the announcement was made a couple of days ago, but they are clearing everything out. 70% off!!!!!! I shouldn't be mentioning it here on RS, 'cause everything will be gone for sure by the time I get there after work. If any RS members lurk/cruise Richmond, drop in and tell us what's left. 70% off Gundam models is pretty good. The last time I went to Iwase, the selection of models were good. Not much, but all very good ones.

Car models are hard to find these days, except for the cheesy, level one or two ones made for 6 year olds. BTW, if you're looking for those for your kids, go to Michaels and use their 40 -50% off coupons. Model building used to be so popular when I was a kid. Not anymore. Is it because kids nowadays are dumb and can't follow simple directions? I believe it is a good learning tool for little kids. It's like kids who play with lego and other building toys - grow up to be inquisitive and creative. Dumb kids just sit in front of TV picking their nose.
Back to the models. I would look up models on the Internet. When you find what you like, go to a local hobby shop and have them bring it in. You'd be pleasantly surprised at how decent the cost is.
Plastic models and parts associated with them are duty free!
J Hobby is apparently moving and having a sale. Started in mid February, LOL. Anyone know if they have indeed moved by now?

It's just about May and nothing is updated on their website. Perhaps like a lot of hobby stores, they have gone tits up.

Yeah, the guy did mention about the new place. He's still at the old place for a little while longer. I'm only into WWII static models, so it's not my kind of place.
Damn, I'm liking Go Go Hobbies in Coquitlam. Absolute cheapest place for Tamiya paints and products. I ordered yet another 1/350 scale Tamiya IJN heavy cruiser from them. Cheaper than every on-line dealer on the Internet. I don't know if I'm getting these prices because I shop there all the time, but 10% off already ridiculously low prices on paints and accessories.
I bought a can of TS spray paint and it is like 3 bucks cheaper than every other shop out there 4 bucks cheaper than Imperial Hobbies, LOL. When you go through paints like I do, the savings are huge.
BTW, Tamiya paints are getting harder and harder to get. Stupid labeling issues again. Not being able to import the shit in. I think distributors are having hard time as well. My most used paint, IJN Gray Kure Arsenal was out of stock at Go Go Hobbies. Went to Toys Planet in Crystal Mall, the next cheapest place to get Tamiya paints, and they were out of TS-66. Damned if I'm going Gunze paints or *gasp* Testors. Actually, Gunze paints aren't that bad. They don't have spray paints in the colours I want.

They are putting on a swap and shop event on the 8th of October. Lots of great deals at that one. People rent tables and sell all their surplus stuff. Vendors are there, too, flogging old models and whatnot. The display of models at the show is impressive. Best of show and stuff like that. Anyone have tips for spray painting during the winter time (aerosol and airbrush methods)?
materials
10-02-2011, 10:23 AM
I guess I'll pop my 3 year old RS cherry and make a post after 3 years of lurking. I'm generally a car/plane modeller so I had to bite.
I don't do a whole lot of painting in the winter because of the cold- causes orange peel and other funky stuff for me, but if I have to I set up a space heater in my garage with my airbrush and paint with the room a little warmer.
I don't aerosol so much anymore but what I used to do was turn the fan on in the bathroom, paper up the tub and paint in there. Just be careful covering the tub up because those Tamiya aerosols will NOT come off.
I got into airbrushing recently and have had fun so far, until this summer when it was uber hot. I guess I didn't thin the paint enough, but all I got were spider webs all over the model. It was fine enough that it didn't really spoil anything. Just kind of freaky seeing it like that for the first time.
Too hot, too cold. At least in the winter time, you can turn up the heater. BTW, I never paint in the house. Wife hates the smell, so I have a paint booth set up in the car hauler that I use as a workshop. The paint booth is vented to the outside and it works well for most things, except Tamiya white primer. That stuff gets all over the place. I have, however, discovered Valejo primer. It goes right into the airbrush and covers nicely. Not as wonderfully as the Tamiya, but a lot less messy.
Also, nice to see a lurker pop his cherry. A virgin no more............. I'll be the first to give you a thanks. May it be one of many.

Before I got the spray booth, I would take my model to work and paint it there.
Paint only smells for a short while outside. Windy day, not good. Perhaps in underground parking next to the exhaust fan?

Damn. I only have a small floodlamp in the garage as a heat source. The only solutions I can come up with is buying a cheap pedovan with a heater or get someone to wave a Shopvac around while I spray indoors. :lol
To be realistic, I wonder warming up a can of paint would work (using a tub of warm water). Then again I'm supposed to do that during regular weather.

10-03-2011, 09:12 AM
Well, a space heater like the one I use costs only like 20 bucks or so.
Warming paint does work, I think it just gives it a better consistency (you know how the pigments all clump up together and crap at the bottom of it)
Best deal is the lamp and heater combo they sell at Lee Valley Tools and Princess Auto.

I also use a portable oil filled radiator. I got it from Costco last year. It keeps stuff in the car hauler from freezing.

Just a reminder for those who care. The 41st Annual IPMS Show and Swap Meet is tomorrow. I don't care about the show, but will be at the swap meet. So many bargains there. Must get there early and line up, though, 'cause all the good stuff goes within minutes.

On a side note, I just received my Tamiya Thin Blade Craft Saw and Handy Craft Saw (no longer available in NA). I ordered them off eBay from a seller in HK. Arrived within a week. So cheap. in kelowna there's only really two shops, with not much selection. mainly rc stuff. the shop you mentioned, from north van, is located in penticton- tried to check it out last summer but he wasn't open yet. I hear it's a good store though.

Fucking hell.......... those bastards. And a lame excuse at that.
There's always Boxing Day Sale. Imperial Hobbies and Magic Box have their 20 - 25% off sales then. Christmas money, FTMFW!!!!!
Well, to be fair, he wasn't being discriminatory... most of the RC stuff were marked with "ND" on the labels for "No Discount". They're probably not lying about the margins being too low.
I'm looking to buy a Traxxas 1/16 E-Revo VXL. The cheapest online price I can find is $279. Their price is $329, so 20% off that would be $263, so they would definitely not make much off that sale.
I would suspect that it will be the same for those other stores...

I heard it was a good store. Never had the chance to visit it while it was in the Lower Mainland.
Model building isn't as popular as it once was. Like I mentioned before somewhere, kids these days can't read, let alone follow directions from pictures. Oh well, shit happens.

I love Hobby Search. They often have pictures of parts and scans of intructions/colour guides. I think I've only bought one item from them. The IJN Ayanami by Fine Moulds in 1/350 scale.

I've seen the Traxxas 1/16 ones going for a bit less in other Asian places.

I noticed this too, not too many new kits coming out in the car world. Discontinued, discontinued everywhere...
I hate that word, "Discontinued." Half of Tamiya's new catalog is full of "no longer available" kits.
Tamiya distributors like the Borg in Canada, Great Planes and Horizon down south. Frick!
Production runs are limited or something like that. Dealers can explain it, but to consumers like you and me, it doesn't mean squat. And you wonder why so many people are buying stuff from HK. I don't like to buy out of country, but when the stuff you want isn't available in your country, what else can you do?
Thank god for eBay.

ebay's awesome for rc parts. most of the sellers i buy from are from hk or japan though, especially for tamiya hop ups.
have you tried tower hobbies? they're fairly decent with their promos especially if you group buy and ship to point roberts.
Funny thing you mention Tower Hobbies. Anything Tower Hobbies has and for whatever price, HobbyTown USA in Bellingham will match and bring in. So, no shipping charges and you pick up whenever you are down in Bellingham. They are just north of Bellis Fair.
BTW, Go Go Hobbies in Coquitlam orders stuff from the US distributors and pass the savings on to their customers. I'm not into RC, but it might be worth it for some of you to check them out.
I've had Go Go bring Tamiya craft tools and models in for me and the shit arrives within a week. No shipping costs, hassles, etc. The models I bought from them ended up cheaper than if I had purchased them from HK or Japan via eBay.

The dude from Apollo sent me to Go Go Hobbies when I was looking for Tamiya paints. I think the two shops know each other. Dude knew I was a static model person, so he didn't mind sending me to Go Go. I'm glad I found Go Go Hobbies. Can't say enough good things about them.

They are primarily an RC place, but carry all kinds of other things, like rockets and models. The guys there seem to really know their stuff. When customers go behind the counter and grab whatever they want, it indicates a lot of trust between the owners and customer. They are always helping people fix their broken cars, heli's, planes, whatever. Small place, but it is jammed with parts for RC's - floor, walls, to ceiling.
I'm not into RC's myself, but man, the stuff is interesting to say the least.

I remember in this thread someone said they sell TAMIYA paints at the lowest price? The only place I have gone to is that place in Crystal Mall, next to the escalator. They sell for $2.99/10mL IIRC. And something like 7.99 for aerosol.

I've been drooling over this model since it was announced and shown at this year's All Japan Hobby Show. How I'm gonna pay for it, dunno and don't really care right now........ ramen, mac and cheese for the next ten years, LOL.

I shy away from rigging and cables, but gonna go for it this time. Lots of research to do.

Holy shit, man! Awesome.
Went to Imperial Hobbies Boxing Day Sale today. Left without buying anything...... never, ever happened before.
I received my IJN Yamato model last week from Go Go Hobbies and I need to pay it off. I also purchased Tamiya's version of the IJN Yukikaze as it was outfitted for Operation Ten-Ichi Go - escort to the Yamato on its final (suicide) mission.
If any of you are interested in this incredible model by Tamiya, Imperial Hobbies now has it for sale. I calculated the cost of the model, minus the 25% off, and it is very close to the awesome price I paid for my kit.
I've never seen such attention to detail in a model kit. I can't wrap my head around the over 1200 parts this kit has. I thought the Hasegawa IJN Nagato I finished a couple of months ago with its 800 pieces was tough, this is going to be nuts.

After discount, it is close to normal pricing everywhere else. LOL
Honestly, I buy model kits often. Go Go Hobbies in Coquitlam is by far the cheapest place to get them. Even lower than eBay. Only drawback is, they don't have stock. However, they can get whatever you need within a week.
If you're close to Richmond and need the model now, Imperial has the advantage. Some people don't mind paying the extra for selection and in-stock items.
Being close to Coquitlam, it is a no brainer for me. Always phone ahead. Tamiya Paint is also cheapest at Go Go.
And no, I don't work for Go Go Hobbies.

Just got back, forgot to check this thread again LOL. Anyways, bought a Fujimi Merc 190E for $20 (ebay'd and google'd at the store, couldnt find it for cheaper at least with shipping). Also had a $15 JZX90 Toyota Mark II in my hands but put that back down.
edit: pic of the Benz for fun
http://www.1999.co.jp/itbig06/10063577.jpg
Decent I guess, but nothing extraordinary. They had some retarded pricing on some of the other kits though, like a $64 kouki S13.
I'll definitely keep Gogo in mind, but maybe after I start getting through all the kits that are accumulating in my room...its baaaad
Don't get me wrong, Imperial has some really good deals on clearance stuff. It's just recent stuff that is waaaayyy overpriced.
IJN battleships and crusers, for example, are on average $100.00 more than what I pay for at Go Go Hobbies.
Go Go Hobbies works for me, because I know exactly what I want and can wait the one week it takes for the order to come in. Tamiya tools, the Snap On of the model world, is way cheaper through Go Go. I used to purchase a lot of Tamiya Craft Tools from HK, because it was so cheap. Now I don't bother. The only time I buy models off eBay is if it is no longer available in NA. BTW, shopping on-line from HK is pretty damn good. Shipping is trouble free and models are duty free!
The other time to buy models at ridiculously low prices is the IPMS swap meet. Fall Show (http://ipmsvancouver.ca/page2/page2.html)
Started building the Tamiya 1/350 IJN Yamato (new version) at Christmas time. I've spent a bit of time on it and have the hull and main decks painted and put together. I also have the main guns completed, along with the superstructure and a few other major parts. So many photo etch parts to deal with. I don't have high quality pics of the model, just ones I took with the iPod.
The fans on my paint booth are getting a workout. That primer stuff is plain nasty. I just love my Iwata airbrush. Gone are the days of spraying with aerosol cans and wasting a tonne of paint. All the painting is done in the 20 ft car hauler out back (more like dog house). Wife would kill me if I painted inside the house.
smoothie.
02-20-2012, 12:03 AM
that is a hardcore setup...
^I cringed as I cut two 4 inch holes in the floor of the then brand new car hauler for the two exhaust ducts from the paint booth.
This is what happens when you move from the Valley to Burnaby. You have to buy a house that's half the size at twice the price. My tools and stuff had to go somewhere. The trailer is heated, has a good sound system, and a few other goodies. All I need for summer is a bar fridge and an air con, although it cools down pretty good with door up front open and the rear ramp lowered.

Now I'm tempted to get equipped with an airbrush :okay:
A little worried about the thickness of Krylon primer on panel lines and such..
^Tamiya Primer is so sexy. The stuff does not build up or cover up minute details.
Tamiya Fine White or Grey is what you need if you don't want details covered up.
As for airbrushes, I will never go back to anything else. The finish you get with an airbrush is amazing. You have so much control. From hairlines to wide spray pattern. All you need is a compressor with a pressure regulator.

02-21-2012, 09:39 AM
Tamiya fine primer is really the best stuff there is..period..
I got a can of Krylon primer after using Tamiya for a while and hated it. Too bad I can't find any more Tamiya grey around here.
Mr. Surfacer 1200 is pretty good too.
Tamiya grey comes in regular and light version. So I'm told.
I always thought grey was not as fine as the white primer. I have a can of Tamiya fine grey primer. I don't use it because most of the IJN Tamiya kits are in grey, LOL. I bought the stuff for German armour, which comes in sand colour.
BTW, on advice from a salesperson at Imperial Hobbies, I bought a Valejo, water based primer. It is meant for airbrushes, so I bought it right away. I've tried it a few times and I am disappointed by the results. I always end up going back to the Tamiya primer.
12 bucks a can at Go Go Hobbies is the best price anywhere, and I get a "good guy" discount on top of that (hee hee). For those who are getting into painting their models, be it Gundams or anything else, using a primer is a must. I painted a model once without primer and the paint came off too easily from just handling it.
Also, the Tamiya primer goes on so nicely, I can get away with not washing the parts in water prior to painting (I can see some hard core modellers cringing from what I just said).
Tamiya fine primer is really the best stuff there is..period..
I got a can of Krylon primer after using Tamiya for a while and hated it. Too bad I can't find any more Tamiya grey around here.
Mr. Surfacer 1200 is pretty good too.
Just talked to Cam from Go Go Hobbies. All three types of Tamiya primers are arriving today (regular grey primer, fine white, and fine grey). I hope he ordered lots, 'cause I'm going to stock up. At 12 bucks each, it's a damn good deal.
Also, he told me small scale models are making a come back. He has had so many people special order models and supplies recently. To the point he is going to start carrying all Tamiya paint colours in all types - acrylic flat/gloss, TS spray paint and even the AS series for airplane modellers.
The other day I picked up some CA glue. I thought CA glue is CA glue, but there are all kinds of different ones out there. I bought the one that is semi gel type that is also flexible. Damn, it makes applying photoetch so much easier.
It's been quiet in here, so I thought I'd share my latest DIY project. Really simple idea. There is a similar item you can buy out there called the parts saver, but it has some flaws. My little solution works for me and it cost next to nothing.
When working with small parts, you drop it and it's nearly impossible to find. I've lost plenty of very important parts in the past. Not only that, but finding it can take forever.
Here's what I did.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb75/89blkcivic/apronfront.jpg
Took an old apron I got from somebody ("Get Cracking" egg apron) and put some velcro on the table and back of apron.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb75/89blkcivic/apronbacking-1.jpg
I can remove the apron from the table at any time.
When using it, I take the neck strap and wear it like normal, but bottom upside down, forming a trough. Sory, no POV pics taken, LOLOLOL.
When not in use, I simply roll the sucker up and it's out of the way.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb75/89blkcivic/rolledup.jpg
Now there's no way for parts to hit the floor and get lost when I fumble.

Hm, after browsing this thread, I might just make the trip to Imperial to pick up a couple of car model kits when I need the paint for my Armored Core Ambient model. I can't wait for that one to show up since NOBODY in town stocks AC models, and the last one I saw three years ago was a hundred bucks.
Also, is it better to paint Gundam-style pieces with them in the rails, or should I remove them and paint them individually?
Imperial Hobbies has their anniversary/customer appreciation sale sometime in August. In recent sales, the discounts were 25% off everything in the store. If you can wait till then.......

I'm not looking for real-deal vintage stuff nor the limited/treasure hunts, just a few regular cars from 2011. Did not pay enough attention to the releases last year and the scalpers on eBay are killing me with their prices. :okay:

Yeah. Hoping to come across a more quieter, less restocked place.
On Track Hobbies in Port Moody has Hot Wheels, but not sure how much. I collect Matchbox, so never check closely what's there.

Which place(s) has/have the best Hot wheels selection? and not overly inflated prices.
I'm not looking for real-deal vintage stuff nor the limited/treasure hunts, just a few regular cars from 2011. Did not pay enough attention to the releases last year and the scalpers on eBay are killing me with their prices. :okay:
Every three months or so, there is a diecast show at the Recreational Hall in Pitt Meadows. Loads of tables with Hot Wheels from $0.50 to $2.00, you will most likely find the cars you are missing there.
Here's the website for show info:

Was reading through the latest issue of Fine Scale Modeler eMagazine when I came across this.....
1/32 J7W1 Imperial Japanese Navy fighter aircraft Shinden | Products | Zoukei-mura Inc. (http://www.zoukeimura.co.jp/en/products/sws01_shinden_cl.html)
Damn..... what if the Imperial Japanese Navy actually built this thing in time? Probably wouldn't make a huge difference, but man, I've never heard of it. Almost a weird as the IJN I-400 submarine that carried three airplanes (M6A Seiran) designed to take out the Panama Canal.

Just found out by reading the latest copy of Small Scale Modeler Magazine that the Zoukei-Mura 1/32 scale model of the Shinden will be re-released. When I saw it, I was like, "SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!"
1/32 Shinden 2nd Edition Ah! My Goddess | Products | Zoukei-mura Inc. (http://www.zoukeimura.co.jp/en/products/swssp01_shinden2nd.html)
I was hoping this company would re-release the Shinden. New ones of the original production on eBay go for like 500 bucks or more. This second version is not as cool, but all the parts are there, so just need to paint it in WWII colours.
So dbaz, no need to keep looking. I've ordered the kit.

^Most of the hobby shops carry the microscale stuff. I got mine from GoGo Hobbies. They ordered it for me. I've seen it at Burnaby Hobbies and Imperial Hobbies in Richmond. Call before going.
As for Nitro Fuel, Go Go Hobbies in Coquitlam has it for sure. Both for cars and planes.

On Track Hobbies in Port Moody is closing its doors for good. Stuff has been on sale for at least a week or two. They are primarily a hobby train shop, but carry static models and other stuff.
On Track Hobbies Hobby Trains, Games, Models, Paints & Supplies ? On Track Hobbies (http://www.ontrackhobbies.com/)
Their website doesn't mention that they are closing, but they are. Selling everything from stock at hand to the store fixtures and display cases.
They started off with a modest 10% off and are now at 20 -50% off. I'm waiting for it to go lower, LOL.
Imperial Hobbies Customer Appreciation Sale this year will be held on the 16th, 17th, and 18th, of August.

IPMS, gotta love the name............ is having their annual fall show this Saturday at Bonsor from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Special theme - "The Korean War."
I don't go for the show, but rather the swap meet that is held at the same time. I picked up some real bargoons last year. Vancouver alderman, Kerry Jang, is into small scale modeling. Sold me a beautiful, out of production, Aoshima Iron Clad, IJN 1/350 heavy cruiser model kit. I also got me a few car models and accessories. I'm hoping to find some display cases and photoetch parts this year.

Anybody into rockets?
Been thinking about getting started with an Estes model rocket set but was wondering if anybody has experience with this stuff.
Oh yeah, I am rocket man............ ask away.
Seriously, I have built tonnes of them and have launched them. You are talking about the normal stuff, right?
Because, down in the US, them Amuricans know their rockets. Some of them are bona fide missles that can take out North Korea, LOLOLOLOL.

I rode my bike through John Hendry Park a few months back and saw a dad with his kids launch one up into the air and thought, "Hey, that looks pretty cool." As for "normal stuff" I'm assuming you mean the ones by Estes Rockets?
A friend of mine in high school gave me one in high school but it was only the rocket. We moved and it was never to be found ever again so I'm wondering how they work / what you need / costs/time required etc. Would like to try it out one day.
There are lots of Estes kits out there. Some are very easy to put together. Less than 20 minutes to build one.
You need a launch pad and a controller. There are kits that have these two included. You can also make your own launch pad and controller, but it's much easier to get the ones that come already made.
Best place to get a kit is by going to Michael's and use their coupons.
Oh, you need the rocket engine. When you buy the engine, it should come with extra plugs and igniters. All very affordable.
Be prepared to lose your rocket. They go as high as 2500 feet and more, and drift off into the next neighbourhood if not carefull. Calm day, of course.
For beginners, it is recommended that you use the weaker engines that will launch the rocket like 500 feet in the air.

I'll toss this in here, I recently got back into RC cars, and I am tempted to pick up a heli too.
But I bought a 3.3 Revo from Mr. Hobby in North Vancouver.
The owner Mr. Lee is actually super helpful and awesome. He helped me out a ton when I first was getting back into Nitro RC's. He is at the store himself 6 days a week, and the store is packed to the brim with all types of stuff (everything from heli's and boats, to model train stuff and everything in the traxxas line-up).
Anyone looking to get into RC'ing on the north shore go see Mr. Hobby. I can't say enough good things about my experience there.

Damn, the model kit I ordered did not arrive at 24/7 shipping today, as expected. Delivery date moved back........ damn you, UPS!
Anyway, here's what I ordered.
The Modelling News: Zoukei Mura?s two new kits ? after two years the Raiden in 32nd and the finely reproduced Shinden in 48th (http://www.themodellingnews.com/2013/07/zoukei-muras-two-new-kits-after-two.html)
I already have the 1/32 scale version of the J7W1 Shinden and now the 1/48 version. I'm behind at least 10 models now, including a couple of battleships and two versions of the zero fighter in 1/32 scale. At least I'll have enough to do to keep busy in my retirement.

Anyone into Kyosho Mini-Z's here? are there any local hobby shops with a track available for testing?
Imperial Hobbies is having their boxing week sale right now. 25% off entire store. Magic Box Hobbies is having their sale, too. Although only 20% off, Magic Box sale is on par because of inflated prices at Imperial.
Imperial's sale is on till the 31st, while Magic is only one day.
Some dude was at Imperial at 6 AM, which is nuts when you figure it opened at 11:00 AM. I'm at Imperial right now and the lineup to pay is unbelievably long. Nothing over at Magic Box. Next year, Magic Box only for me.

I've decided to take up Gundam model building as a side hobby, I'll probably build one once every three months or so. Just finished the red one in this pic, a newer 1/100 scale Strike Rouge, although I still need to complete the weapon backpack for it. I have another one based on the Gundam Build Fighters anime on the way as well.
http://i.imgur.com/JuZ6XAd.jpg
I've noticed that buying locally is rather overpriced, as I can buy similar kits for basically half price overseas, and the shipping is still less than buying local. However, if I can find something I really like on the cheap in Vancouver, I did notice some older kits on discount at Imperial Hobbies. Anyone else have a lead on local Gundam kit sellers, outside of the norm?
There used to be a place in Burnaby that sold Gundams on-line. No local pick up, but prices were reasonable. Their website now indicates that they are located in Blaine, Wa and Wilmington, Delaware, but I remember their website having a contact number in Burnaby at one time.
In any case, here's the link.

locally, theres only a hand full of shops i know of that sells gundams, imperial hobbies have a limited selection, magic box hobbies have a slightly bigger selection than imperial, but prices r a tad bit more expensive, and the 3rd/4th shop is located in crystal mall, right beside the elevator. there is a gift shop that have a large selection of gundam, and another corner shop piggy backing this gift shop that sells gundams only, but this piggy back shop is open on weekends only.
as for prices, i find the crystall mall shops comparable to online sites from the states, usually just $5 more, so if u factor in shipping it'll cost more to buy from states.
as for over seas, i have not tried yet, but big sites like hobby link japan and 1999.co is sometimes half the price of the kits here
There's also a place on Kingsway across from Metrotown that I think carried some Gundams, but not sure.......... I haven't been there in a while.
