Around 3AM on October 17th I stepped outside the Lamplighter club, ready to go home after having a great time there. As soon as I made a few steps, I heard a very rude remark made about myself. The remark came from behind so I turned around and asked them to clarify why they made the remark. At this point I realized that I was facing 7 males (6 white, 1 asian) who had no intention of apologizing.

After I spent a few minutes trying to defend my position, the asian male took out his phone and started filming me. I asked him to stop but he didn't listen. I decided to do the same and pulled out my phone - if anything happened, at least I would have all of their faces on camera.

I filmed each and every one of them and said "Alright. I got all of you?". At this point, the guy in the center said "Film me man. Yeah, you got me? You got me??" and landed the unexpected punch. Since I was looking at the camera when the punch landed, I had no time to react to it or deflect it. The punch knocked me out and I hit my head against concrete with full force.

After this point and for the next two hours, I do not remember anything. The first memory I have is of me covered in blood, being rolled in a wheelchair into a CT-scan room in St. Paul's Hospital. After a few minutes, they told me what happened and that I had a fractured sinus, concussion and facial lacerations.

A month has passed and I'm still having terrible headaches and experience dizziness almost constantly. The incident also left me with a permanent scar on my face.

The police cannot make any further progress until the guy is identified.

I have no idea what I would have done in your situation. The safest thing may have been to avoid aggravating them in any way, even if they were wrong or rude for talking to you like that. I'm sure they would have been less likely to hit someone who walked away or wasn't as offended to whatever they said. It's obvious that they were looking for a fight, but I don't think they would have bothered running after you.

What's done is done. Hopefully you get the guy back. Don't go to jail for it though.

To tell you the truth, initially I had no idea they were preparing for a "fight" a "punch" or whatever.

I started filming because they started filming.

It was an argument indeed, but nothing serious. No one was screaming. Everyone was semi-laughing (as can be seen in the video). When the guy landed the punch I didn't even know what happened.

It's only after I watched the video myself did I realize the guy in the middle was preparing for a punch and the guy behind him was restraining him.

First of all, I wanted to thank RevScene as a whole and wstce92 personally for all the help! I did not know about this community before someone on Reddit recommended I post here.

Second, there have been quite a few "should've walked away" type posts. I expected posts like that to show up in a thread like this. Typically I ignore those, but I think I should answer all of them at once here:

Yes. It was stupid of me to stick around after the first insult was made by the group of 6. I did have a few drinks at the club, but thanks to prohibitive drink prices at the Lamplighter, I was not drunk at all. I know I should've left the scene after turning around and seeing that there were 6 guys, mostly drunk. But to my slightly intoxicated mind back then, staying and defending my position somehow made sense. I also think that being in a very public area (literally, people all around us) made it feel safer.

But personal advice is not why I posted this thread. I think having to live with my injuries for the rest of my life is more than enough of a lesson for me. I posted this thread with hope of identifying the suspect, which I believe this community has done an amazing job of.

The only reason I pulled out my phone was because they started filming. Having watched dozens of "street prank" videos on YouTube, I thought they would be less inclined to pull one on me if I had all of their faces. Besides, punching someone in the face while being filmed in a VERY public place would be pretty heavy evidence and great identification aid in the case of assault. The identification of the guy made by this community stands to confirm that. They did not take my phone because an assault (especially a suckerpunch like that) is done in the heat of the moment, while testosterone and adrenaline are still pumping through the veins. Robbery, on the other hand, requires more thought and carries a completely different jail sentence, especially when combined with assault. In other words, they were stupid enough to assault me but not stupid enough to rob me.

The reason I removed the audio from the clip on YouTube is to stay anonymous, not because it captured some "provoking" remarks on my side. The VPD, of course, has the complete video with audio. To compensate, I have added subtitles to the video (click the CC icon), that detail how our conversation went.

Finally, to address all the "gangsta-talkers" on this thread: yo say I deserved this?? if the guy had any balls, he would atleast give me some indication he wanted to fight (and no,, acting tough is not an indication.. guys do it all the time when chix are around). at the very least, he shoulda gave me some time to see the punch coming. not punch me WHILE i was looking into the phone and then run away like a pussy. it's like kicking a guy in the fucking head while he's sleeping/. grow some fucking balls! i'm a peaceful guy but can stand my ground alright, especially when it's a matter of self defense. had this been a fair fight, Iwould not be as pissed off and this thread would never exist.

To translate into normal English: I believe every person has some basic rights, especially rights to their personal mental and physical space. Whenever those rights are challenged, the person is free to defend them to the maximum legal extent. If someone harasses you verbally, tell them why you think otherwise. If someone punches you, punch them back. I tend to agree with this guy's philisophy (http://www.sebastianmarshall.com/?p=283): There’s legitimately bad people in the world, barely above animals, and strength is the only thing they respect. Had I been given a chance to defend myself in this situation, and had this guy won in a fair one-on-one fight, I would not be enlisting the help of this forum to identify him. I want to identify this guy to make a public example out of him. I want him to be ashamed of harassing and then punching an unprepared, unarmed guy while 5 of his buddies were watching behind him. There is nothing to be proud of in this situation, even by "street" standards.

Now, about the update. The VPD has been extremely slow in responding to all of my communications with them. The way they deal with cases like mine is they give you the assigned officer's badge number, email address and voicemail number. You can email, call and leave all the voice mail you want and hope the officer gets back to you someday. There is no way to speak to the assigned officer directly unless they call you back.

My assigned officer took two days to reply to me after I submitted the suspect's photo, name and Facebook page. During this time, the suspect deleted his Facebook profile (although I do have a screenshot of it), further confirming that RevScene has got the correct person.

The photo that wstce92 posted (the guy with the frying pan) as well as the information that he sent over email allowed me to identify the suspect as Grant Davidson. Following further search online I have been able to find another photo of him which, in my opinion, is a 99% match with the suspect. I will release the photo and more details as soon as the police confirm they got the guy.

The police officer replied to me recently, saying that they will investigate if Grant is indeed the suspect in my assault. I have not heard back about the progress of their investigation yet.

Insist you want to press charge, tell them you lost your job / source of income because of the injury

Ive been watching the thread and im glad u guys found the goof. I really hate clubs and pubs for this reson, drunk idiots always lookin to pick a scrap.

Reminds me when i was outnumbered at a club once. these drunk east indians like 5 of them were pickin on my buddy and we were outnumbered 5-2. We left the club and waited in my car to see where they were going, they jumped in a car and went to 7-11 and parked in the alley. My buddy jumped out and slashed all 4 tires. Then we watched from down the alley in my car. LOL they were so choked. As a tow truck was hoisting the car with all 5 of them watching we drove by and left them a few parting words.

Earlier tonight I saw a young guy (about 25) in HMV downtown holding a small child about 2 years old. Its obviously his kid. Anyways, I see him charging up to some other guy in the store saying "What the fuck are you looking at huh? Wanna go? Wanna step outside asshole?" All this while holding his kid. The other dude kinda looked at him like 'huh?' and walked the other way not saying a word. It was a little surreal. I was wondering what the guy with the kid was doing so far away from Walley. :rolleyes:

I went to jail for standing up for my "beliefs" A guy picked a fight with me and I destroyed his face. Because he didn't get a chance to fight back I got charged with assault causing bodily harm. Had I walked away and just let the insult happen he wouldn't have needed reconstructive surgery and I wouldn't have done time. Where is the balance? Was I right for defending my beliefs or should I have walked away? I guess that's something YOU have to decide for yourself and trying to tell ANYONE what they should or shouldn't do in a situation like this is just idiotic. You can say whatever you want but every situation is different. What if the OP had a knife and the guy didn't knock him out? What if the OP then stabbed the guy in defense and he died? Is that worth standing up for your "beliefs" when the whole thing could have been avoided?

MK1 I get what your trying to say but your preaching to people about something YOU feel strongly about. Society, if it functioned as you were saying, in a "fight or flight" way would end up in Chaos with everyone fighting over the smallest thing. Saying "You wanna go" or anything like that does not make a mutually agreeable fight. Trust me I know. The judge even said so. 2 people shoving first and THEN fighting yes that's mutually agreeable in the eyes of the law but nothing verbal can be construed as evidence. Had he fought back or been able to fight back it would have been mutually agreeable. I hit him once. In doing so I broke his jaw in 3 places and fractured his orbital socket. He never got a chance to fight back and that is considered Assault Causing Bodily Harm.
