Surprised a thread like this doesn't exist yet. Anyway If your a DJ or want to learn more about it then post your questions and answers here.

Also introduce your self and elaborate on your choice of music that you spin and how long you've been doing it for.

I personally started out with Virtual DJ to get my hands wet and eventually bought a Midi Controller. Now a days i invested in a pro system and seriously loving every minute of it. Its not like car which at some point you may regret building hehe :(

A few websites to get you familiar with the industry

www.djforums.com
www.prodjforums.com Hopefully mods dont see this as SPAM ( its not lol )
www.djtechtools.com

Plus post some crazy mixes that you have done and possibly pictures of your setup... which i wanna see! :drool:drool:drool

Here is mine - 2x Pioneer CDJ-800 + Behringer DDM4000 Mixer

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v635/ghetto_89/DJ101013-1.jpg

Plus a few recent mixes, hope you guys enjoy and lets keep this thread alive with these!!! :)

i wanted to get into dj'ing before, was thinking about taking that class that long and mcquade offers. but then was thinking about maybe picking up my own thing and kinda teaching myself.

would you say taking the course would be worth it? or would you just go pick up the basic equipment on your own and mess around? was thinking about picking up the VCI-100 to start off with

-EuroRSN-
12-01-2010, 11:09 PM
Hey, I think a course is completely unnecessary as the best teacher is a mouse click away. You wont believe have many videos there are on Youtube ranging from tenminmix's to full tutorials, guess what Im trying to say is you can easily teach your self. The more you practice the better you understand the concept.

As for midi controllers thats exactly what i bought, a VCI-100 but it's a little pricey and you need a external sound card. Depends on your budget you can buy a cheaper controller with a built in sound card such as the Numark - Total Control for under $300 but it could eventually lead to loose knobs and such.

All controllers are pretty much the same the main factor is " Build Quality" so anything metal or with sturdy buttons that dont get loose is best. Remember its like your computer keyboard and it controls functions within the DJ software so they all do the same thing. One controller may have more buttons for u to assign but thats about as fancy as u get. Check out TomLeeMusic for controllers!

what would you pick up besides the vci-100 thats a bit cheaper i guess. i've looked on the website but i ened up narrowing it down to that. if theres something cheaper that would be decent for a beginner i'd rather pick that up

trance or gtfo!

-EuroRSN-
12-02-2010, 11:05 PM
^ Lol hardstyle is good for the gym and when your completely fucked up but ur right Trance owns all.

As for the DDM4000, its not bad i had it for 3 months without any issues. The music quality is great and so are the effects and sampler. Only bad thing is maybe its a cheaper build but there is warranty to cover that if anything goes wrong. Behringer has a really bad reputation for shitty DJ mixers but so far this one is great. Time will tell but as far as it stands now i would totally recommend it.

This looks like fun.

I looked it up and the equipment that chick uses is, at a minimum, $2000 before you get into any extras. Is there any way to do this with less money to begin with or better yet...is there some sort of virtual setup I can do on a laptop and what would you guys who are obviously more versed in this sort of thing recommend?

Farfetched

what do you guys think of the Hercules RMX midi controller? it'll run you $400 before tax and it looks like it has a pretty solid built compared to the other plastic midi controllers.
Hercules also came out with a new midi controller but i'm not sure how much it cost.

12-03-2010, 01:28 PM
I've been trying to get into mixing for a while, but I dont have the money for equipment. VDJ's ok, but ever since I played around my neighbors set, its not the same.

-EuroRSN-
12-03-2010, 02:02 PM
^ my friend just bought a Hercules Control Steel with a Numark DJ/IO external sound card which is honestly fucking awesome! Cost under $500 taxes in for everything.

Hercules RMX is even better so id totally get it if its within ur budget.

Check out www.virtualdj.com if you guys wanna mess around with DJ software. Download the demo which gives u 30 days but the program it self is full with all features. or download it via torrent hehe

oHenry, all this shit is actually quite affordable if you finance. $100 payments a month is quite reasonable plus Long and Mcquade hooks you up if you buy more shit lol.

I DJ

Equipment:

2 tech 1200 retired
Behringer mixer retired
Torq DVS system retired

Torq Xponent midi controller (what I use now)
Behringer B2031A studio monitors (amazing sound at a bargin price)

2 Yamaha 15 inch PA speakers
2 Yamaha 18 inch PA subs
Behringer EP 2500 amp
Behringer EP 1500 amp
Behringer 2 way crossover
Behringer xover
Behringer rack mount mixer
beyerdynamic wireless mic
planing on selling most of my PA gear.

Before you buy equipment figure out what type of DJ you want to be (mobile club bedroom) and what type of music you want to play(hiphop EDM ect.). The Hercules midi controller is O.K. if you want to DJ in your bedroom, house party's, or be a mobile DJ but it's not good if you want to be a club DJ.

^ Shit i thought i was the only one here haha!

A midi controller is a good start but definitely not a Club Standard. Plus can still throw down at house parties.

Hey Manic since you seem to have some experience with speakers what are some good Active studio monitors that are not too expensive. I was looking at the Rokit KRK6 but i dunno i cant justify spending 350 on each monitor LOL

Behringer B2031A studio monitors

Amazing for the price. Should cost 2x the price. Some of the best speakers I have heard. You have 150 watts RMS going to the 8 inch mid and 75 watts RMS going to the tweeter.

I paid $359 plus taxes from Tom Lee with a price match from here

I heard they were phasing out technics 1200s so I want to pick up a set before they do. Want to mix vinyl so baaaad. Don't really care if i get them used, as long as its in good condition. I would finance if i had steady income. All my money goes towards the car...and food.

-EuroRSN-
12-05-2010, 08:37 PM
The 1200's are apparently discontinued now to my knowledge but local music stores still carry them until all sold out. Vinyl is the shit but its even more expensive due to well vinyl cost up to $10.00 each per song... You can always get a DVS system like Serato but thats even more money. CDJ's is the best way to go!

pioneer cdj 1000 mk3s lol arnt they known as mk3s? =S

damackz
12-06-2010, 07:21 AM
mk3 doesnt refer specifically to the 1000's. I have been Dj'in for 10 years now and VDJ is a good starting point. For those wanting to start with Vinyl pick up some direct drive TT's on Craigslist or a pawn shop with a cheap mixer and go crazy. Just like anything its about having fun and practicing. Spinning house trance electro music is easier then hiphop and rap as the beats per minute are around the same range so again if ur into that its a good starting point. I got 2 1200's with a Rane Mixer. You need to get Good headphones that are comfortable!!!!

-EuroRSN-
12-06-2010, 11:20 AM
CDJ1000 MK3 are pretty much the same as the 800's. Only biggest difference is Hot Cues, Better Wave Display, SD card and generally better build quality overall.

CDJ900 + 2000 are a whole new league in technology, same as the CDJ850. All the new Pioneer products could now be linked through RekordBox Software which kinda acts as a DVS system and you can play yours songs through the computer. I dont really know too much details since i havent played around with them yet. Plus you could use USB on all the new line CDJ's.

Check out some reviews and features here

VCI-100 is 10X better

Im currently using Hercules Control Steel w/ DJ IO soundcard

And the build quality of this particular midi controller is superb, the knobs are still tight, faders are crisp and not flimsy like a lot of the NUMARK designs lol.

Just a quick tip, if anyone decides to start out make sure you get decent speakers and a decent laptop with ATLEAST 3 GB of ram xP

Me and my buddy do some DJ just for fun we started a couple months ago, and then after we went to some party here and there, people start offering us money to play at they're party. So at the beginning we were using a lil Vestax spin then we went with a Numark mixdeck which we both didn't like so now were buying the Numark NS7FX

It's torq xponent.

The VCI is a replica of a 2 turntable and a mixer setup, It's really solid unit the solid software designed more for hiphop DJ's.

The xponent has a lot more bells and whistles and has good software and is a well build unit.

I've got a Torq Xponent running on the Torq software and 2 KRK Rokit 8 Monitors (the 'old school' box ones). I haven't tried Torq 2.0 yet though.
Had them for a while now but I haven't really used them as much as I wanted to.

I started out with 2 Technics 1200's and a Vestax PMC-05 Pro, all of which was used. I bought a new Torq Connectiv pack eventually so that I didn't have to deal with a bunch of vinyl. It was fun at first but for some reason I couldn't get used to the whole set up and sold it all. Then I discovered the Xponent which had been out for a few years.

By the way, nice set up Euro. Is that a custom table you put your set up on or it comes like that?

Alright guys you asked for some demos so heres a few I made when i first started out. Nothing special in my opinion cause i would say i have greatly improved since then but better then nothing. I will make a new Hard House mix sooner or later when i have the patience.

I personally find that when i record a demo i tend to fuck up due to trying to mix perfectly so i hate recording lol.

thats pretty much creme. pretty much the best equipment out there right now (aside from the cdj2000 which is the mk3 w/ software)

for anyone starting from the bottom up, the midi controllers would be a good start as they take up a lot less space. its also wiser spending in case u really are just starting from the bottom and just trying to figure out if u like mixin or not.

for me, i started with vdj years ago, and only now (because of space) ventured into physical equipment.

My buddy loves to dj. He's got 2 cdj 1000 and a djm800. Real fun to play with but I'm more of a party foul

CDJs have a totally different feel then a midi controller and a computer. If you do plan on taking it somewhat serious and maybe begin playing out in the future then go with CDJ's or vinyl.

Learning the concept of mixing and EQ's, Song Structure, ect, a midi controller would be perfect. More like a starter 250cc bike lol and eventually if you like it move up to a 750. You will want to upgrade your equipment as soon as you start getting better and better.

you can still scratch with the 800mk2, just that the mk3 is a tad easier in the adjustability.

02-26-2011, 10:08 PM
dont let the number fool you, 900 is newer than the 1000mk3, and thus (didnt look into the specs) probably allow usb input. the mk3 has an sdcard input but its only for recording and storing of cues. your main music source is still off the cds, or mp3 cds. midi controllers are more basic but more open to different media inputs.

going from vdj to actual equipment now that i got more room meant learning from sq 1 again...

the 900s have a slip mode which is pretty dope for scratching. it also has a beat loop feature that helps looping. its like the ones in vdj where u can split it from 16 8 4 2 1 1/2 etc. better display and usb support that means u can put all your songs on a usb and link them. its basiclly a refurbished 1000 mk3 with a few more features and tweaks

If anyone is looking for an affordable mixer with all the bells and whistlers i really recommend the Behringer DDM4000. Behringer has a bad name but honestly this mixer is awesome, it has lots of effects, sound quality is great and really cheap for what u get. Although build quality imo does suffer a bit but still really good if u dont abuse it too much. Its been 6 months and not a single problem!

Alright guys, time to go the DVS road but cant quite decide between Traktor Scratch Pro2 or Serato SL2. Traktor has definitely redefined their software and hardware but still remains problematic in some areas.

As for Serato its simple to use, doesnt crash and really rock solid. A friend had a gig last night and all 4 DJ's were using Serato so just go to show its quite the industry standard in North America.

I dunno both seem great but Traktor seems to offer alot more for a cheaper price. Plus if i were to get TSP2 id pair it up with the Kontrol X1 :fullofwin: so definitely alot of potential.

Anyone have personal expirience with TSP2 that can chime in? Thx guys

Get a traktor S4 instead if your working with a laptop.

It's approximately $200-250 more but well worth it

^ Traktor has a tendency to crash thus the reason why most ppl go for Serato cause its simple and realiable.

You can use a POS laptop with serato and it will run fine as for Traktor u may want a Laptop with 4GB of ram higher and a good processor. :) But that will still not guarantee u anything cause it might just glitch and die.. Just hope its not at a club lol

Nope just hit a switch and throw on a record or CD. Most major DJ's now use some type of DVS system. Also CD's and records can skip.

Plus post some crazy mixes that you have done and possibly pictures of your setup... which i wanna see! :drool:drool:drool

Somehow I've never seen this thread. I co-host a weekly EDM radio show broadcast from CHLY 101.7FM in Nanaimo called The Massive. My co-host NoProfit often plays live and we have occasional guest DJs. Search The Massive on iTunes if you want to check it out, we have a free podcast on there.

I've only started DJing a bit over the winter, kinda saving to get some gear.

I've been a party and nightclub promoter in the EDM scene on the island for a few years. I used to have so much gear stacked in my place when I was doing club nights, but never had the time to practice. A set of tech12s, a set of stantons, Vestax mixer, CDJ1000MK3s, lots of stuff I packed back and forth for each night.

I wanted to get the vestax, but people have mixed opinions on it.. Some say 100 is good, others say 300. What do you prefer, I wanted to get the newer 300 simply because its newer, yet it seems that its not as easy to map it to traktor (not a big fan of serato itch)

Biggest difference between the 100 and 300 is that the 300 has a built in soundcard. Meaning you can just plug in your headphones into the midi controller and boom your all ready to go.

If you get the 100 you will have to buy an external sound card that will splice up the audio and have a headphone out signal. Otherwise you will not be able to pre listen to the tracks your listening to. The Numark DJ/Io sound card will do a perfect job for that and cost only $100...

You should prolly go for the vci300 if you have a bit more money and that way its true plug and play.

As for traktor you will HAVE TO MAP every single midi controller with that program unless its traktor certified. You will most likely use Virtual DJ for the most part until you got traktor figured out and mapped lol.

I bought the VCI100 w/ Numark DJ/Io when i first got into this and i got to say i loved it no issues what so ever.

Hope this helps

no point, now you got serato, you can load everything thru the laptop!

your decks just become just that, just decks, only reason to upgrade is newer cdjs have the ability to control some of the serato functions right off the deck, and utilize the cues once again.

how do you like the sl3?

^ Exactly, no point in upgrading. One cool thing i realized is my mixer is actually midi assignable so once i buy my wires i can map all the serato functions into my mixer :)

As for SL3 its awesome! i dunno how i managed to go so long with out it. Loops are finally alot easier and everything just fell into place. Beat matching requires slightly more skill now cause you cant always dial into the exact BPM as you would on a CDJ. The tempos are abit off but you learn better this way..
