hey guys, this morning when i went to work my employer told me money has been taken out of his debit account (around 3G) and he didn't know until he checks his account. Of course i felt sorry for him knowing these happen once in a while. Later on the day, a patient came in and told me money was also withdrawn from his debit account (around 3G as well). They both uses Royal Bank.

anyone know what's going on?

Probably one of those emails saying you need to log in to confirm some "security info"

and leads you to a fake log-in page.

I've gotten some claiming to be from "RBC" and "BMO" and the sad thing is the URL is totally off and not even close to the official sites.

I dont even have a BMO account

Debit and Credit Card scams are made possible by an added Chip type technology that they put into Point of Sale Machines.

These are mainly targeted at McDonalds, some smaller businesses and Gas Stations.

Whenever a card gets swiped through these machines that have been tampered with, all of the information is kept and blue toothed out.

So with debit cards, all your account information is sent out including your PIN, and with Credit Cards, all the account information, card number and PIN if applicable is sent out.

Then people who are counterfeiting them will make new cards from the account information attained and will use somebody else's name (one of their own) to buy stuff, and if they get ID'd, the name will show up as themselves.

The banks and Credit Card companies pay for all the losses, so just check your bank statements and credit card statements thoroughly every now and then, and report any unauthorized transactions within 30 days (varies depending on the bank/Credit card company you're with).

3G's? what were they pulling out like $20 per day?

typically anyone with a card that is pulling out the limit for more than a day or 2 will have their account suspended automatically

The money was taken out at different times and it totals up to $3000

most if not all of these also involve an employee as well

Doctor's may be book smart but that doesn't mean they have street smarts. Either way that sucks and hopefully he can get his money back.

Its simple, tell them to contact RBC. RBC will cover the loss. Then they should also sign up for internet banking so they can monitor their account from home.

Royal Bank is usually pretty proactive with this. I got a call before from RBC Security asking me to go into a branch and get a replacement debit card as I used it the day before at a business where they suspected debit skimming was going on. They couldn't tell me what business it was for legal reasons, but I only used debit at one place the day before, McDonalds at the mall at Tinseltown.

Went into a RBC, they confirmed the call from RBC security and issued me a new debit card.

this shit has happened to me twice. Once last last xmas and the other was last xmas. Situation was slightly different though...they copied my debit card and probably had a camera somewhere for my pin. Both times at Park royal. We'll see how it goes this xmas:p
PS. I'm with RBC too

put a daily and weekly max on your debit card so if you do get scammed they cant take as much. As well I only have money I can blow on my debit when I can use internet banking from my cell if I need more cash.

-Banana republic metrotown
-La casa gelato
-Memory express

I work at RBC and ther have been numerous clients who come in claiming their cards have been compromised, they all receive calls from royal direct notifying them that their card MAY have been compromised, the daily access limits get blocked, until you come into the branch, get a new temp card and change your pin. Everyone be sure to check your OLB regularly if you use it, if not I highly recommend enrolling, this isn't just happening at RBC its happening at every financial institution across lowermainland, everyone should be extra cautious. A good idea is to record all your transactions(dates, time, $amount)that you may make with your debit/credi cards, that way if you do get compromised its very easy to find out when and where

All employees should be trained to keep their eyes on their debit machines so these douche scammers won't be bugging 'em..but not making obvious as if you were trying to see the PIN the customer's typing in.

Our pin pads are locked to the base so they can't be moved. Also the back has tamper proof tape.

Yeah.

For those of you who don't know, employees are paid to just "look the other way" while a chip is put into the debit machine.

So for example... you can pay a McDonalds employee working at drive thru some cash to just look the other way while they do something to the debit machine.

For the next hour, the employee will have to tell all customers that the debit/credit machine is not working at the moment.

After the hour is up, the guy(s) will come back to fuck around with the machine again, and the job is done.

All cards used from this point on will be frauded.

There's minimal risk to the employee cause they won't know the exact date this happened, and companies only keep their camera tapes for so long.

I've never been scammed via debit/credit because #1 I pay for all food with cash #2 I pay for all grocery shopping in cash.

Cash is imo, the worst way to pay for anything. You're losing out on a lot of potential cashback and points there my friend.

Credit is the way to go. Zero liability if you are a victim of card theft, and you're technically using someone elses money for free (provided you never make a late payment).

my rules. never use debit to pay for anything. ever. its a direct line to your bank account. With Credit card, at least you have some protection.

^^ exactly, i don't use debit anymore, only credit card.

the one time i had to use an atm machine at a sketchy place (no. 9), i went online and changed my pin right away.

I had this happen to me once and they cleared out chequing account... Didn't find out until about 10 days later when I tried to deposit my cheque. I got reimbursed by CIBC...

Never used my debit to pay for anything ever again.

The suspected locations of card-skimming are Fresh Slice Metrotown or Chubby Lamb Hot Pot in Richmond along Alexandra Rd. Heads up to you guys.

I had this happen before too took 1000 from me using debit but I got reimbursed...so its all good. IMO its better to pay with actual hard cash then with cards nowadays just to be on safer side...but credit cards good too since customer is never held liable so you always get reimbursed if anything bad happens...same with debit to some extent.

my debit card just got blocked yesterday by TD. Someone apparently tried to copy my card and PIN using one of those rigged machines, and tried to withdraw almost my entire account. Good thing TD has a lot of precautions set up and they realized the transaction didn't match my spending habits.

Every time I go to ATM, I cover the keypad with my left hand while entering the PIN with right hand.
