VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - If your healthy New Year's resolution is losing its lustre already, maybe this story will get you motivated again. Canadian women are among the leaders in the world's fat race.

In a comparison of countries in the high-income world, studies in The Lancet have determined women in Canada are among the leaders, gaining weight faster than almost any other women.

On the streets of Vancouver, we met one woman rushing off to exercise who's pretty sure we're not quite number one. "I think we're catching up to the US, definitely."

The research finds Canadian women are indeed lagging behind the heavyweight champion of the wealthy world. But women in this country now have some of the highest average body mass indexes.

BMI over 25 is considered overweight and the average index for Canadian women as of 2008 was 26.7.

We're pretty fortunate that most people in the Lower Mainland are somewhat health conscious and that we're spared the sight of what's happening in other parts of the country. If you travel outside of the Lower Mainland, you definitely see this happening.

The avg is BMI is 26 which is probably that high because some girls are like over 9000 BMI.

But, I believe that the BMI is full of shit because I can tell you right now I would look like a stick if i was at the suggested 180lbs at 6'3" (BMI would be 22.5)
