forgive me if its already posted:

so it's launching tomorrow
anyone considering getting this?
looks decently spec'd up to 9.5 hours battery time (16 with dock!)

http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/tablets/asus-eee-pad-transformer-tf101.aspx

might just do it since its priced at 399(wifi only)/499 [149 for the dock]

but may just wait for the tab2

Pick one up for me, willya? I'll pay you back eventually :)

Seriously, looks pretty trick... although with my need for Windows for work stuff, I'd love to see a PC design like this.

I was going to pick up one when I go back to Hong Kong in the summer... until my laptop started to die.

So now I have decided that I don't need a laptop and then a tablet that transforms into a laptop.

I'm probably just gonna pick up some other random android dual core tablet lol.

This is currently the cheapest dual core full featured 10" tablet. The keyboard is optional anyways. Other than the Viewsonic G tablet this is an awesome deal.

confirmed price at memoryexpress 399 with 16gb (wifi only).
they have 2 in stock friend showed me the box, but they weren't opening it LOL
32gb is not in stock nor are there any keyboard docks.

What I dont understand was why Asus didn't use USB 3.0 or Bluetooth 3.0 for this model / the keyboard dock. It's been out for quite sometime now, and its seen across their line of netbooks.

Otherwise, its a great tablet/netbook!

Is USB 3.0 really necessary on the tablet? I mean it'll only have the 16gb plus whatever microsd you install on it. At those sizes I don't think speed is that much of a concern.

It's a bit more expensive in Hong Kong (4000HKD = $490 CAD for 16gb) if you buy the machine on its own, but the buying both pieces (ie: with the keyboard dock) as a package is about 4800HKD = $590 CAD. Keep in mind too there's no sales tax in Hong Kong!

gaaaahhh should I buy a fancy tablet or a sexy laptop? or BOTH and use up my tax refund lol

RE: GPS in US version? Need confirmation from anandtech please by Anand Lal Shimpi on Thursday, April 21, 2011
I just confirmed with ASUS, the US version does have GPS hardware. Maps seems to require an active WiFi connection to use GPS however, which is why I originally assumed it wasn't present. My mistake, I've corrected the review :)

12" isn't too big for tablet. What you need is the Asus Eee Slate:

However...given its size, it will weight a lot more and much poorer battery life.

Well it's catered to a different crowd. Some ppl still like to run windows and desktop programs.

And some of us NEED to. I work with surveillance systems and network cameras. The systems we use have only a Windows-based client. 90% of the cameras require ActiveX to view their live views and setup pages. Android and *nix are useless, so a netbook that runs Windows suits me perfectly.

I was using a 15" laptop before, but it was heavy and bulky and unbalanced, had lousy battery life, and was hard to see in bright light. It was a PITA to carry up a ladder or balance on a lift. My netbook runs all day on a charge, is light as a feather, and the LED-backlit screen is readable in direct sunlight.

So.... no, Android tablets and iPads will NOT be replacing netbooks or laptops. They're a different market, that's all... like cars vs. trucks vs. trains.

There were a lot of tablets available prior to the iPad. Fujitsu's been making tablet computers since the 90's. Bill Gates tried pushing tablets back in 2001 but I guess without the cult following, it never took off

IMO tablets need not imitate a full sized computer and run windows. Those OSes were made/designed to be operated with a keyboard and a mouse.

What apple did though, specifically starting with the iPhone is made a completely "new" way to navigate through an operating system, by designing it around WHAT is used to navigate the interface, rather than supplying compromises to make your fingers act as a mouse or keyboard

!LittleDragon
04-28-2011, 12:19 AM

Far more apps. Far more accessories/cases/docks to choose from.

Oh, and there's that little graphics thing. You know, the iPad 2 is anywhere from 2-5 times faster. But graphics speed means nothing on a tablet, which is all screen, so it's not really an advantage at all.

There are many great keyboards for the iPad 2, and you can choose which one you like instead of the proprietary Asus one. As I'm typing this there's an ad for the Zagg mate at the top of the page.

Apps for Honeycomb are a long way behind iOS. On the smartphone side Android is doing very well - maybe that's what you were referring to.

Any bluetooth keyboard will work, the Asus keyboard does have another battery that'll just about double it's uptime.
And how many developers are going to bother to make a keyboard for the Asus when Asus already has their own? Sure any Bluetooth one will work, but wouldn't you prefer one that was actually made specifically (meaning it's sized and styled to match your Transformer) for it?

You can also use any BT keyboard with the iPad as well. Despite this, only a small number of people actually get keyboards for their iPads. This is because they bought the iPad for consumption, not creation, and the on-screen keyboard works well enough for the amount they use it.

And the I pad has been out for how long??? and like everything else apple there overpriced.

Didn't you learn your lesson the last time you used that argument? Sure Apple branded accessories (like cables/adaptors) are expensive, but so are ones sold by every manufacturer. Complaining about Apple charging $30 for a cable is pointless when a dozen companies make compatible ones for $5 (or less).

And the fact still remains that with an iPad 2 you will have a choice of countless accessories made by numerous manufacturers. You won't see that for any other tablet until after they've been successful and have significant sales numbers. No company is going to want to spend money tooling up for production of an item without first having a market to sell to.

Oh, and I see no responses on my comment about the iPad 2 killing the Transformer in graphics performance.

^ and THAT'S the exact reason why the OEM keyboard is so much better.

You can also use any BT keyboard with the iPad as well. Despite this, only a small number of people actually get keyboards for their iPads. This is because they bought the iPad for consumption, not creation, and the on-screen keyboard works well enough for the amount they use it.

^ Good point. iPads are consumption-orientated....that's because that is how Apple framed it all in their iTunes-iPad-iPhone-iPod ecosystem. Awesome business strategy if you ask me.

The Honeycomb OS is targeted towards a totally different type of user.

Oh, and I see no responses on my comment about the iPad 2 killing the Transformer in graphics performance.

^ As someone who is personally starting to develop for Honeycomb, I see lots of potential in developing for Honeycomb tablets. Honestly, Honeycomb had only been released for a few months. It's easy to forget that iOS has been on the market for 4 years now...if they didn't optimize the OS graphically by now, shame on Apple. Almost no OS manufacturer has perfected their OS in the first go, so I see no difference between Honeycomb and iOS. Also, Google is locking down on their hardware requirements for Honeycomb tablets, so it will make harnessing the processing power much better than previously in other Android iterations.

Anyways, this thread is about the Asus Transformer. No point in bashing it with Apple-trolling.

Anyways, this thread is about the Asus Transformer. No point in bashing it with Apple-trolling.

It was asked by LiquidTurbo why the iPad 2 is better, and reasonable (and accurate) repsonses were given. I don't see it as trolling, unless you feel it's necessary to avoid talking about competing products when someone asks.

However, the Apple haters are sure quick to post up useless garbage like South Park videos or make false claims about expensive Apple accessories. Seems like it's the haters who are trolling/posting trash.

As to graphics performance, the A5 is a superior processor to the Tegra 2 regardless of the OS. If I was looking for a Honeycomb tablet I wouldn't buy the early tablets with Tegra 2 - I'd wait for something with better performance (like Tegra 3). Usually it's the enthusiasts who are more likely to buy an Android device, and I'd think an "enthusiast" would be concerned with the underlying hardware and its performance. You wouldn't see a person building their own rig to buy last years video card, would you?

the technology was before it's time. they wouldn't have made any money on it if they sold it as a consumer-based product. that's why they sold it to casinos, hotels, and other businesses instead.

as for the asus transformer, it's a bit too thick for me with the keyboard attached. with the pace at whcih technology is growing, I expect asus to come out with a a thinner and more battery efficient model next year. i'll wait till next year to see what they have.

!MiKrofT

It's not really that thick considering it's basically a netbook with the keyboard attached. Any thinner and they'd have to start using more metal/cf/etc which increase costs.

Asustek said its Eee Pad Transformer was selling like hotcakes in the US on channels including Amazon.com Inc and BestBuy. The company now expects total shipments of the Transformer tablet to exceed 300,000 units for the quarter.

“We have been resolving component shortages for the past month [in the wake of Japan’s double disasters on March 11] and volumes of the Transformer will pick up soon,” CEO Jerry Shen (沈振來) told an investor conference.

Daily production output of the Transformer tablet is set to hit 100,000 units from next week onwards after steady component supplies were secured, he said, adding that daily output this week was 50,000 units.
Asustek expects to ship more than 300,000 Transformers this quarter.

“The strength and user experience of this product will help us achieve the shipment goal,” he said.

The company said its first tablet is currently the top seller in the tablet category on Amazon.com, dwarfing Motorola Inc’s Xoom and Samsung Electronics Inc’s Galaxy Tab.
Asustek is betting on the Transformer — a 10-inch Android 3.0 machine with a detachable keyboard docking station — as its anchor tablet model.
Development of the second and third generation of the Transformer has begun as Asustek aims to sell 2 million tablets by the end of the year.

So guys I wanted your opinion on the Asus Transformer vs. Ipad 2.

I'm planning on buying one or the other but I just can't decided.

Basically, I need something like the Ipad/Transformer to do some work on the road. Emails, PDF files, editing some excel files, media consumption.

I already have an jailbroken iPhone4 so i thought the Ipad2 would suit me well. I was going to get the Zaggmate keyboard as well.

But after seeing the Transformer i'm having second thoughts.

Can the transformer do pretty much what the ipad can do?

The huge draw for me right now is that the iPad has such a huge app store... things i bought on my phone i can pretty much also have on my ipad

I like my hacked apps / installous on my iPhone...does the Transformer or the Android market have something similar?? lol

So just came back from ncix richmond. spent about 10-15 minutes playing with it. It was definitely cool. Well built, didn't feel cheap but it didnt feel refined and robust like the iPad.

Scrolling and going in and out of programs i would say wasn't as smooth as the iPad either, and for some reason the youtube clips I watched were laggy / choppy. Maybe it was the wifi connection in there? and or video was buffering etc.

The email app, map app, remote desk top, office suite, was what drew me to the transformer, and they seem to work well.

The demo Transformer is being rotated around branches. So far they started off at Broadway's...and now somewhere in Richmond. Give your local store a call to check if they have it in store that day.

I've been trying to find one locally, and of course there are tons of morons on CL jacking up the price trying to resell them for 30% more than retail. It'll probably be weeks before I can find one, which brings me to consider another product.

Samsung Slider Series 7 @ $649.99 USD (Price confirmed by pre-order @ Amazon.com)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwnCXlZDMS0

Win 7, HDMI out, SD support, physical keyboard, front and rear cameras, (GPRS)3G Support, 2lbs. It makes me consider this now because its coming out VERY soon. The only advantage I like about the ASUS TF is the dock is also a battery in itself, and it runs honeycomb.

The sliding keyboard is nice...
but one think I hate with a lot of Samsung's products is the huge black plasticly-looking frame surrounding their products. Ie. in this case...the frame of the tablet. Gives consumer this "cheap plastic" feel + look to it... And its a lot thicker than the Transformer + keyboard.

with that samsung, you might as well get another laptop...

It would be a replacement for my netbook which I take to school, and around town if I need it.

The specs are similar to my current netbook (LG X110 - 1.6Ghz Atom [Single Core], 2GB ram, running Win 7. So yes, in essence I would be buying another laptop, this time with a captive touchscreen for a reasonable cost. I'm satisfied with the performance on my netbook so I'm ok with going to either the TF101 or The Samsung slider..

Back on topic with the TF101.

Does anyone on RS have one at the moment? Im concerns is that the hinge on the dock seemed a bit flimsy on the videos. Im concerned about the durability. I'm not rough with my products, but sometimes a neoprene case cant absorb the impact of university textbooks if you get my drift.

ASUS is already talking about Tegra 3 tablets to be ready later this year. I wouldn't buy a Tegra 2 when a new version that will be 5x faster is due in less than 6 months. By then Google should have the bugs in Honeycomb worked out and there will actually be a good selection of tablet apps available.

^ True, and I know some people who never buy stuff because of the next great thing coming up. I also know people with money to burn who constantly upgrade to the latest.

I'm in the middle - I wait for something significant to some out, then buy and keep it for a little longer. I try to buy something at the start of its life cycle, not at the end.

I'm the kind of geek junky that keeps up with most of the latest stuff.

The economical way to maintain this is to take advantage of new stuff and CL.

My iPad-->iPad2: iPad1 originally bought with Futureshop gift cards that I bought off Craigslist at 15% discount. Basically no tax for me. Went down to US to buy 3 iPad2s. Sold 2 for 250 profit each on CL and my new iPad2 was basically free and as CDN is worth more than USD, I even got my gas covered.

If you plan ahead and always look for good deals on CL, the upkeep with latest gadget can be minimum.

You just have to be smart about technology. If you want the latest and greatest, be prepared to pay.

If you wait forever, you're being an idiot. Basically the best way i think, is to wait long enough until the product has significantly improved. For the iPhone, the iPhone4 was the sweet spot.

I think the iPad 3 will be the sweet spot for iPads, and as tempting as this eee transformer tablet is, I'm sure that by the end of the year you will see something good enough that it will make you regret getting one of these now..

There was some sort of weird mix up, but they had 2 Transformers in stock and available... the catch was ONLY if u were on the pre-order prepaid list.

I had a chance to take the tablet right there and then since i prepaid for one, but i passed due to other financial commitments that came up.

ended up purchasing a keyboard and headphones for gaming since i couldnt get my deposit back

Alright guys so i'm typing this on the tablet atm. I'm going to give you my initial impression.

I'm not sure if its a hardware issue or a software issue but even typing this right now, there is significant lag betweeen me pressing the keys and the actual letters popping up on screen.

Youtube videos are quite choppy. It's like buffer freezing, but its not. It will play smooth then be choppy.

I downloaded and installed Facebook, but the application crashes evry single time i go to my "friends" tab, it crashes and forces me to close the application

I've uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted the Transformer but it hasnt fixed the issue.

The browser on this thing is recognizzed as mobile browser, so when i go on Facebook.com i can only view it on this android version and i cant really choose the desktop version.

I cannot tether the Asus Transformer to my iPhone4 using MyWi. The device doesn't recognize mywi adhoc hotspot.

So far, I'm not impressed. This post has taken me 10 minutes so far to type because the words dont appear fast enough on the screen

I'm pretty certain this is a software issue.
I played around with the Motorola Xoom that my friend had bought for a couple of days; and I was plagued with the same issues when posting on forums, facebook, google docs, office app, etc.
Considering the processing power and ram, there really shouldn't be as much lag as there is when typing.
Regarding the mobile version of websites issue, try typing about:debug into your browser address bar.
How is the browser when it comes to browsing multiple tabs?
The Xoom will crash repeatedly when browsing multiple tabs, and some websites (like jalopnik) will cause it to crash as well.

I'd return it. Software companies are bad at releasing products with defects because they know they can patch it at a later date. That's fine since there are always unforeseen problems that don't get spotted during testing. But too many companies are releasing products with significant deficiencies leaving you having to wait for an update before it's even usable (or your game playable). Of course you can't do a damn thing since software can't be returned.

However, you have a piece of hardware which means you can return it. The iPad is one year old. Competitors sat on their asses for most of that time and are now trying to rush products to market that aren't really ready for prime time (Xoom, Playbook, Transformer). What the hell have they been doing this last year?

Do you really want to pay money to be a beta tester for their product?

android 3.0 is bound to be buggy, and for me that isnt much of a dealbreaker when you look at the value of this thing.
Granted the annoyances you are facing would be enough for anyone to return the unit, for me i love being able to face issues and have them solved/fixed through my blood, sweat and tears (well actually lots of energy drinks and late nights LOL)

the potential of this unrefined(software wise) machine is so high(even without tegra3) that it gives me wet dreams. (im so horny to try out ubuntu on it) Once honeycomb is in full developement swing and the apps come rolling in and google sends out the upcoming updates i'm sure that this tablet will shine.

In any case its up to you what you decide to do with your machine but on the offchance you do go back to ME and return it LMK so i can get the open box deal :P

Having built countless gaming rigs over the years, I can see where you're coming from. And that's fine if you're selling to enthusiasts and overclockers. But tablets are being marketed to consumers and an easy-to-use device is what they want.

These companies are going to shoot themselves in the foot if they take an "enthusiast" point of view and apply it to a product they want to sell to the masses.

^ Samsung had a tablet ready, but did a quick refresh when the iPad 2 came out (rumor is to make it more competitive). The new one is much sleeker than the original.

When the late-comers ship their tablets with 3.1, what are current owners going to think? How many people are going to equate the Samsung's better performance to the company/tablet as opposed to the OS? The tablets that arrive late might actually do better than the ones rushed to market since those customers won't have any of the issues the first tablets did.

It's not always best to be the first to market. :)

I picked up a 16GB from Staples a week ago and got the dock from MemEx, so far I've been impressed with it, There are a decent amount of apps in the market but they need to start optimizing some of the more popular ones for the honeycomb and utilize the screen. Got the update the day after a bought it last week so I can't really say how it was as most of my experience with the tab is on 3.1, one thing i really don't like is how short that USB power cord is ...

Has anyone looked into a screen protector for these or is it not necessary (how does a protector affect touchscreens)

My skinomi carbon fiber skin came in, gotta say this is a sweet skin.too bad the key dock doesnt have one yet

That's looks really sweet, does the skin affect the docking to the keyboard or is it a non issue ...

and it's a non-issue when docking.

That tab has gorilla glass on it... if you don't drop it on a sharp object screen down or store it with sharp stuff you shouldn't need a screen protector..

Why not just get a laptop at that price.. haha.

because laptops at that pricepoint suck and a tablet serves a different purpose.

laptop won't give me 16 hours of usage on a single charge.
laptop isnt as portable.
start up time is slower.
etc.

taylor192

Why not just get a laptop at that price.. haha.

1. Cause I cannot separate the laptop and carry around just the screen as a tablet.
2. Cause the laptop will not have a touch screen.

Yet most of us want these for couch surfing, in which case a cheap laptop is a far better choice, especially for those of us that post on forums a lot.

I have a feeling that the 32GB will hit that price again pretty soon (hopefully).

I got the protection plan at bestbuy since it's an on going thing for 3 years. Literally anything that can happen other than physical is covered. And if anything does happen, you'll be able to get a brand new one or if there isn't anymore transformers (ie: Transformer 2 is out) You'll be getting the transformer 2.

So if by chance the transformer gets bricked or something a few weeks after the transformer 2 is released. The replacement will be a transformer 2 :)
