Anyone have a motorized slider?

Lomac
09-23-2013, 02:19 PM
I don't own one but I've used a couple different ones before. Honestly, for video shoots they're pretty pointless. They're great for adding motion to timelapse videos and can come in handy as a makeshift mini-crane, but otherwise you're better off simply hand pushing your camera on the track.

Ronin
09-23-2013, 02:21 PM
I want it for time lapse but it could be useful for regular video as well.

I was looking at this one from Varavon/OliviaTech. Haven't seen a motorized package for roughly $500 elsewhere and it uses roller bearings.

Lomac
09-23-2013, 02:35 PM
The Motorroid? If so, it's a very lightweight unit. Only 6lb's carrying weight and the slowest speed it'll do is the full track in just over 5 minutes. For decent timelapse shoots, at least for night time shoots, that's not slow enough. I'm sure you can adjust the gearing inside the unit, but that's probably a bigger hassle than it's worth.

I'm a huge fan of Cinevate's sliders. However, you're looking at a minimum of $1500 for a decent motorized kit through them.

Ronin
09-23-2013, 02:48 PM
I'd just be mounting a 5D3 to it. But yeah, that speed isn't great.

sk_vw
09-23-2013, 03:32 PM
What about using an egg timer mounted at the end of the slider with some string wrapped around it tied to the camera?

I have a homemade motor made from a bbq rotisserie motor with a slower gearing (from some RC parts) - You just need to tie a string to it and it will pull the camera slowly along the track.

I used to DIY a lot of things but nowadays, I just want less headaches and hassles so I'd rather buy things than make them.

Not exactly cinematography, but it was the first time I used the video mode on my D600. Shot with a 70-200 f2.8 VRII. Mostly shot at 135mm or longer, handheld. The VRII did a great job. Its the only lens I have that has some sort of VR, as all my other lenses are primes.

I use these guys all the time. Cheap prices (typically) and the gear is usually in really good shape. With stabilizers, he'll often give a free day's worth rental so you can take the time to learn it. Be forewarned, they're very difficult to stabilize completely without it having at least a little forward/backward sway.

I've rented from these guys before too, the guy there is super nice and the gear was all good.

I have a question... I want to participate in this thread, but I shoot with a dedicated video camera rather than a DSLR. I don't see any point in starting a new thread because it'll probably be just me, and really this thread is completely relevant for 99% of the stuff in here, like tripods, sliders, stabilizers, editing software, final videos that people are sharing.

Mind if I join in? :)

Cool. Well to give a bit of background I started out doing video with a Nikon D7000 and really enjoyed that for a while. I didn't take a ton of video with it but I learned a lot and learned what I like and dislike about shooting video with a DSLR. I have continued to use the tripod I had from when I was more into still photography, except I bought a fluid head for it for video. Other than that I have a stabilizer but just a cheap one and I really struggled to get rid of sway when using it with the D7000. I know part of that is user error, but it put me off a little. Overall I enjoyed the DSLR but since I was really mostly just doing video I decided to try a dedicated video camera.

Now I have a Panasonic HVX200 camcorder. It's a little older but it does the job. What i like... XLR inputs for audio!! Headphone jack for audio monitoring. Zebras! Built in ND filters are super handy. Almost everything has a button/switch/knob, no need to keep going through menus. Viewfinder and articulated LCD screen. What I miss from the DSLR... it's size and light weight. Can throw it on a slider supported by only one tripod with no problem. And just carrying it around for a long day is a lot easier. It's inconspicuous, and people might think you're just taking photos when you're actually taking video. Interchangeable lenses and lovely low DOF you can get with some lenses and the right settings. Cheap memory cards, compared to the ridiculously expensive P2 cards the HVX uses.

I'm sure a time will come when I want to replace what I have, and I am really not sure yet whether I will go with another DSLR or another camcorder. I see strengths and compromises with both. Maybe if I have the money I'll get one of each...

Anyway, maybe nobody gives a shit about my insight into video stuff, but there you have it, haha. :)

Well I'm selling my Sony A6000 and looking for a proper DSLR for video. I've had a couple of Nikon DSLR before, the second one had video I believe but it was a long time ago. I really want an SLR to pick up a 50mm 1.8 which was always my favourite cheap lens back in the day. I might need a new tripod as well because my current one is for my compact camera and is a really lightweight carbon fiber tripod.

!Aznboi128
01-07-2019, 05:13 PM
As a Nikon lover and owner I would stay away from Nikon for Video.

Unless you get the D500 you can't get 4k with high frame rate or even OIS in the camera. Sony is coming out with A7000 soon that should be a good choice or stick with the A6500 when everyone jumps on the A7000.

denham
01-07-2019, 05:18 PM
Thanks, do you think my A6000 is ok then? Maybe I need to look into lenses more. I just assumed a proper DSLR would be better for video. And lens choice. I'm looking for a lens I can get a nice low depth of field with for some nice shots where I pull focus until the subject is in focus, if you know what I mean. I'm not too worried about 4k at the moment, I'm mostly doing 1080p currently.

!Aznboi128
01-07-2019, 05:20 PM
In that case stick with the a6000, I used a a5100 for a long time before I upgraded.

You can get a cheap 30mm (50mm equiv) manual focus lens and pull focus all you like hahah

denham
01-07-2019, 05:33 PM
Haha ok thanks. I like that it's pretty light and compact. The other thing I'm wondering about is a slider. I used one a long time ago for a project and I was able to mount it on a single tripod which was nice. I don't think I could do that with my current tripod because it's a really light weight carbon fiber one. So I might need a sturdier tripod. Any suggestions for a slider? It doesn't need to be too long and I'd rather have one that does less distance that I can tripod mount than one that's longer that needs 2 tripods or to be put on the floor. Thanks.

!Aznboi128
01-07-2019, 05:47 PM
I don't have much experience with sliders, I have this cheaper Anker one and it works well. Ball bearing makes the slide nice and smooth but it's large, about 4 feet so I hate using it.

denham
01-07-2019, 05:50 PM
Ah yeah. I haven't really experimented much but I think even a couple of feet would add some good movement to a shot. Most of the shots I have done/want to do with a slider are only a few seconds each so it's not like I need to go that far.

Im a Mac guy too. I am a graphics designer and I use Macs everyday at work but I switched because my 2015 Imac can no longer edit my videos. Got a new camera with 4k footage and 8gb of ram is just not cutting it anymore. Upgradability is kinda tough on the Imac so I recently built a powerful PC. Ya its expensive but I have the ability to upgrade down the road and I can also play video games. I loved final cut. ez and straight forward and a LOT cheaper. Premiere is whole different level in my opinion. But am watching youtube tutorials. Hopefully I can pick it up soon.

I used Final Cut Pro when I had a Mac but eventually I wanted to get another PC for gaming so I sold my Macbook Pro and bought a really good gaming PC. Right now I'm using the free version of DaVinci Resolve which I'm really liking. It has some limitations but they haven't affected me at all.

I completely understand, been editing on my iMac from 2012 and it's been hard. Been looking to upgrade but will get all the parts needed to run Hackintosh just to have that MacOS.

Been also looking at getting a Thunderbolt external GPU to aid as Final Cut does take advantage of the GPU's speed but those are a bit pricy.

denham
01-08-2019, 11:39 PM
I remember the other reason I wanted to sell my Sony A6000 is there is no input for an external mic. I have a lav mic with it's own built in recorder I can use, but I was also thinking a camera mounted mic would be good for general recording and I can't do that with the A6000.
