Since no ones really made one before I thought I'd be the first to set one up.

I started out with my trusty old XSi back in 2008 and used it for 2 years before I upgraded to my 7D last June. Was pretty stoked watching Vimeo reviews and what it could do but when I got it I felt so beginner with my shaky videos which took an eternity to edit. I pretty much gave up on shooting video cause my workflow was all over the place.

Now I've decided to go all out and strictly shoot video for the summer, I bought a Rode Videomic (on it's way) and I'm using a Flycam Nano (Glidecam knock off) with:

Tokina 11-16 2.8
Canon 17-55 2.8
Canon 35 1.4L

The Flycam is unREAL for being like $115. It adds a lot of production value and its super smooth. I posted it on the forums before and thought I'd show you guys how it is. (Video at end of thread)

http://cheesycam.com/images/flycam-nano.jpg

I plan on getting an Indislider mini or Konovo roller bearing slider soon for RS meets.

Next on the list too is the Cowboy Studios $30 shoulder mount and maybe the Rig X by Express 35. $300 for a legit no handed shoulder mount and rail/grip combo is a pretty good price.

Vimeo review:

Review: Cowboy Studio Shoulder Rig Part II on Vimeo

What's everyone shooting with nowadays? Anyone have any hints or tips with regards to equipment? I'm trying to keep the cost down with the indie equipment as you can tell with all the knock offs. I saw Senna's post and his set up is pretty amazing.

www.cheesycam.com is a great resource that I follow religously.

Video I shot the Dubberz Spring UnSprung meet with 2 weeks ago. The wind made some of the shoots slightly slanted but you get the idea. It's impossible to shoot that by hand.

Let's try and make this the equipment and chat thread for new and upcoming DSLR Indie shooters.

there was a review done on flycam and it was a bit hard to keep balanced. The merlin was much better/easier setup, but more expensive. I bought the u3x, it's ok but the bending thing is anoying and can shift the balance if you bend it by accident. I also made a slider from a tile cutter haha

u3x:

That U3X looks pretty promising. Wish I saw that when I was on the stabilizer hunt. I like how the gimbal is underneath so you don't get as tired. I can balance my Flycam pretty fast. I thought about sticking earth magnets underneath so I can shift the weights fast to fine tune it. Now I just need some quick release plates. Thinking of getting a couple of these:

What we've seen with knock-off's is that even though they look like they might do the job, they're often more difficult to use, as the balance is off, or the knobs don't tighten very tight, etc... I guess for the consumer, they're fine, but I've seen a lot of pros who bought the knock-offs only to come in and ask about/buy the brand name product, as (for example) the balance of a Glidecam knock-off was totally off centre.

i'm using a 4" car reverse LCD monitor that cost me $19 as my monitor lol. I could of gone with a 7" for $25 but i didnt want it too big. No point in getting a $700 HD monitor as the 5dmk2 doesnt even output HD when recording.

jason: cinevate isn't really low cost. It's great if you're shooting for a business, but if its just for a hobby, it's doesn't really make sense to spend that much money on rigs and sliders.

What I bought was called a Gini Rig. I spent $300 CAD shipped to my door from Korea haha. Counter balance, monitor arm, shoulder pad, long enough rods to mount a 70-200 and a lens brace in case I do run a telephoto. The guy makes a bunch of different ones. Even copying the Target Shooter type Zacuto. Smoking price.

I never said Cinevate was low cost - they're high end for sure. Using low quality gear is fine if you're an amateur for sure, as it probably won't wear out as fast as in a professional setting but the one thing I won't compromise on is the follow focus. The cheap brands have too much play in the gearing.

i did a test shot with the U3X when i got it. I'm still not used to it and can't control the up/down sway too well.

^^ Really? where did you get it, and what's the resolution?

resolution is 1440x272. With the 5dmk2's output with this, it's not sharp enough to pull focus accurately, but it's enough to frame the image with low shots. The 7 inch might be way better for pull focus. But then again for $20 i'm not complaining.

Got my rig from Korea in less then 3 days with no taxes or duty. Phew.

Build quality is amazing for being $300. I first had the Rode on the hotshoe but then put it on the monitor arm for shits n giggles. Looks pretty sweet nonetheless. The shoulder mount isnt the greatest considering it's pretty hard. So I'm going to take that $30 Cowboy Studios shoulder mount and try to mount it to this to try to make it almost completely balanced on my shoulder.

Are you trying to fly a DSLR or a smaller camera? I've seen people use the ball head as a gimbal and shoot with it pretty steady. Or people use the PVC and bearings and make their own. It's super tedious though. If you want Jimmy I can sell you my Flycam and you can call it a day. It can hold a pretty good weight.

I found out some of the Singh Ray ones also have a CPL built in too which would be pretty sick for a 3 in one filter. Yeah I'm going to have to invest in one soon. I had to shoot some of my videos at like F16-F22 because of the 1/50th shutter speed for 24fps andit actually reduced sharpness but it was necessary or else the entire video was blown out.

Thanks for the vari nd review. Def need to look into them.

Dope, I just didn't know about the sharpness of the tokina, since I'm comparing it to a L lens. One more quick question for ya, at what point are you getting barrel distortion with the tokina? I know at 11m it's almost fish eye like, and at 16 on the crop sensor it isn't noticeable, but what about in between?

JordanLee
07-17-2011, 03:07 PM
In no way is 11mm close to a fisheye. Its distortion is typical of an UWA. My friend has the 8-16mm and thats almost fisheye but still very manageable.

Examples of my Tokina:

There's actually cameras that are used specifically for slow motion.

You can always edit the slow motion but it will never look as clean as opposed to an actual shot with a slow motion camera.

There are cameras that do like 1000fps or something crazy like that.

As for programs:
Adobe Premiere Pro
Sony Vegas
Final Cut (OSX)

and Adobe After Effects for SFX

^ Don't need a Slow motion camera. Just overcrank/shoot your DSLR in 60FPS then conform it to 30fps. You can use cineform to do the conforming. it's quite easy.

JordanLee

For that footage, a high FPS camera must have been used. Slowing 60fps to 24 or 30 wont look that good.

The cheapest solution for that kind of slider is going to run around 150$. The one he's using is called a Motion Slider (search it on eBay). Or build your own from the DIY IGUS kits. You cut the rails and mount the tray etc. It's a really cost effective solution. However, these are friction based systems. The more weight you have on the more momentum and more drag. They're also susceptible to dust etc. Roller bearing sliders such as the Konova units and other higher end systems (300$+) are much smoother and the bearings will need occasional lube. The SUPER cheap way is to mount your tripod on a big board will angled roller blade wheels on a ladder. But it's super cumbersome and big.

I tried using a DIY one J_____ lent me but the friction and wobbly ballhead doesnt make for good footage.

You can borrow my Konova to try out if you want.

You can build one using wood. Get those premade wooden tracks and find a wooden plate and attatch wooden wheels to it! I've seen some dude use it and it was quite smooth. Most of the time you won't use the sound anyway so any noise made by it will not be an issue.

http://www.toycollector.com/hwdphotos/originals/9141/1232/track_019.jpg

Just find some wooden tracks off craiglist or something. :lol. Now that's truly DIY.

In the Video/film world, it's really pay to play compared to photography. A $6,000 film camera like the Panasonic AF-AG100 is considered cheap/bargain in the video/film industry.

Yeah depending on how long the slider is, it can be pretty hairy. I'm using this Manfrotto 161MK2B with my 36 inch slider and it's pretty solid. I just need a quick release so I dont strip the threads on the slider soon. The tripod is SO heavy and big though that it makes shoots tiring, but hey I got it for free so I can't complain. And it takes 20kgs lol.

WongFu songs work well lol. I used them for some class projects. Or else some simple instrumental stuff is pretty good too. Work with instrumental stuff first I'd say so the lyrics don't overshadow the video.

How do you like your flycam nano and Rode Videomic? I'm deciding between the Rode Videomic and the Zoom H1 (from as far as I can tell from youtube reviews, very similar audio quality). Can you comment on your experience with the Rode?

I've definitely decided to stick with the flycam nano based solely on the price/all the positive reviews.

I've been nominated to make a short film (~10mins) for my cousins wedding  Excited but haven't got a leg to stand on as far as DSLR cinematography goes... trying to learn as much as I can in 5 months:ahwow:

I liked the Nano but my wrists got really tired at the end of the day. I upgraded to a Steadicam Merlin 2 months ago and its nearly the same thing but a bit easier on the arm as the weight is directly over it.

As for the Videomic, it does its job. I found it made sound quality better but there was MUCH better alternatives to the set up. I ended up breaking all my elastic bands on a trip to HK during a night out cause theyre so frail. Look into a Pro for this reason. I'd reccommend you get any mic and then hook it up to a Zoom. This way you get full control over the sound and you can minimize the static you get. What camera are you using? If its got AGC, def get the Zoom/Rode combo. If you have manual controls you can get by with the Rode for now but youll still want the Zoom later. The only pain being you have to sync up audio and video later with an app called Plural Eyes.

Right now I just use my Videomic on whenever I go out with friends cause its so much easier than bringing along more equipment. But when I start doing it professionally come summer time, def going to have to invest in lav mics and recorders. Sound quality just isn't the same.

Another quick tip:

A Videomic on the hotshoe of a DSLR is actually a really bad configuration because its a shotgun type mic. Which means that a majority of the sound capture is in the direction the mic is pointing. All the sound from the sides of the mic will be very quiet. So when you're shooting, you're actually losing out on a lot of sound and picking up whats behind the person. Best alternative if you're on a budget and shooting interview type shots is to get an extension and make the person hold the mic below them. This way it only grabs their voice and singles out all the noise from around them since its shooting at the sky. Hence news reporters and movies with mic booms.

Ahh ok thanks for the heads up, I may just order a wrist brace with the nano. Where did you buy yours from, because I see prices ranging from $130 - $200 for what appears to be the same thing. I'm going to be doing a lot of running around with the flycam nano so I guess a arm brace would be a good investment.

I think I'm going to just stick with the zoom H1 then because I can be a little rough on my equipment and I heard of a lot of people complaining about their videomic breaking just as you described it.

Thanks for the help! :D Also what kind of memory cards are you running? I need to buy some new ones and I'm looking at lexar or transcend because they seem to be fairly cheap + well reviewed.

Spec'ed how I want it, it's just shy of $2700, though that doesn't include the different geared motors I want (which, for the life of me, I can't seem to locate on their website). I'm curious if anyone knows if there's a Kessler Crane dealer locally. I don't see one posted on their site, but considering this is Hollywood North and all, there's gotta be some company out there that sells 'em...

It's more the vertical climb and descend Im interested in. It's for actual film work, so it would be hauling between 5 and 15 pounds of equipment, depending on the shoot. My crane is nice and all, but its hard to work in many spaces when you're dealing with an 8' boom.

for those doing video editing and processing, i use either camtasia studio or windows movie maker cuz i am a noob at editing so i use the most basic user friendly program. Everytime i produce my finished video there are random scenes that play really choppy. The beginning is smooth then it gets choppy in the next few clips then smooths out again then rinse n repeat. Any idea why its doing that?

Uhh. Camtasia is meant for screen recording so you can show demos. We use it at work to record presentations. Totally not recommended for video editing/processing.

Premier Pro of Final Cut Pro is pretty much the industry standard (For DSLR editing anyways)

Buffer is filling up on your comp. Try playing the video in a lower res so it's less taxing on the computer.

Sony Vegas is probably your best bet, especially if you want something user friendly. I use a mixture of Adobe Premiere/After Effects and Avid, however all three of those programs have a giant learning curve.

Made a music video for my friend for a contest. First time using the video recording feature on my D7000. Played around with several lens and I realized I need a better tripod. Camera shake when i had my 70-200 f2.8 on the camera lol.

Used imovie for the first time and its pretty easy to use but there are hardly any functions. Final cut pro looks interesting but at the same time overwhelming for a noob.

what you guys think?

Just sold my 28-70. Looking at Carl Zeiss lenses for mainly cinematography (and some photography as well). Thinking of picking up a Distagon 35mm f/2 and a Sigma 50mm 1.4 to replace the 28-70.

Thoughts? and anyone have some experience with the Zeiss lens to share? I know they're good quality, but it might not be something I can get used to quickly?

Bought one of these today: Carry Speed VF-3 Universal LCD View Finder by Carry Speed | Carry Speed Store (http://www.carryspeed.com/products/lcd-view-finder)

The Zacuto loupes (these are for video...btw) are too f'n expensive. This one is $60 off for intro price and seems like a good beginner option.

Gonna build a ghetto PVC shoulder rig on the weekend. Gonna be working on making one from aluminum sometime...I have access to a lot of metalworking equipment at the airport. :D

Senna4ever

^^^ That looks like a real pain in the ass to use out in the field. The Zacuto is the right choice for me. It's not perfect, but the optics are great, and it's built tough.

I can't believe you think the Zacuto Z-Finder is expensive - you bought a Retina Macbook Pro! :p

Ronin

It's about an inch longer than most, I think.

There's a big difference between $2500 for a laptop and $400 for what is essentially a toilet paper tube with a magnifying glass glued to a it. :D

davidhtam
01-07-2013, 12:37 PM

Ronin
01-07-2013, 03:14 PM
Y'know what...I'd love a quick rundown on sound too. To be honest, whenever I shoot, I just monitor and turn it up and down until it sounds okay. I have no idea why or what I'm actually doing when it comes to sound recording.

JordanLee
01-07-2013, 05:50 PM
IIRC, David you shoot on a MKII correct? The MKII is capable of manual recording which you can turn on in the settings. Monitor the audio on the graph and just visually check that the maximum volume thats going to be captured doesnt "blow out" so to speak and that static noise (perhaps highway noise) isn't registering on the low end. The MKIIs automatic setting does a decent job but it gets wonky when you use aftermarket mics such as lavs because lavs are so sensitive in a 360 degree spectrum. Shotguns are a lot easier to modulate I find.

When you start getting more serious you can get a Zoom system. From this you get much more control on whats too much or too little and it'll also allow you to monitor the sound via headphones so you know you're getting it right.

I myself don't typically use a mic system unless its just a basic Rode Videomic. But for the most part thats the basics of audio on our little DSLRs

davidhtam
01-07-2013, 11:53 PM
Oh man I had no idea the mk2 had manual recording. I will start monitoring using the graph from now on if I'm recording straight to the camera.

I'm just use to using the h4n for sound recording and monitoring. It's so much easier when you can just plug some headphones in and listen to what your sound will... Sound like.

Yep turn the gain down. You can also throw the audio in audacity (free sound editor) and run some effects on it to make it sound better.

Ronin
01-08-2013, 11:58 PM
Recording with the built-in mic usually results in a lot of echo and noises from the camera. I bought a Tascam DR-05 and it works great. I just mount it with a cold-shoe adapter to the top of the camera.

HD2000 will be just fine! I used the 5D2 with a Tokina on my HD2000 and I only had to use one of the weights on each one. Now Im using the 24L on it and its nearly the same weight. Save yourself some weight and money and just get the 2000.

That's a million dollar shot right there. The MoVI is expensive to consumers but to filmmakers it saves them time and allows them to focus more on the perfect shot. In those terms it's a money saver. I want one LOL

Lomac
05-25-2013, 07:26 PM
That's one hell of a steadicam, but you'll need to make sure your camera operator has strong forearms :lol

I love that drop shot, though. I've done those sort of shots with cranes before while running a remote head, but the ability to not be constrained to a giant piece of metal that's ultimately still attached to the ground would be freakin' amazing.

And I hate to say this, but all things considered, $15k is actually pretty cheap for a setup that versatile. Check out the price of proper film-grade steadicam outfits or mechanized cranes and you'll see what I mean. :heckno:

When it comes to steadicams, you want something that's as easy to adjust as possible, yet versatile enough that should you decide to switch between a 16mm prime and a 75-200mm telephoto, you only need to move the cheese plate in order to readjust the stability.

There are two things I look for in a steadicam:
-Cheese plate mount
-Fine-tune adjustment screws

Trust me, you will curse the day you ever bought one without both of those options.
