my dog barks = bitchy neighbour

so, my back yard faces my alley way. my dog enjoys sitting on a plastic lawn chair on the deck where she can see down the alley way and the street at the top of the alley. shes a 10 year old german shepherd, and shes been sitting there during the days since she was a pup...she enjoys it. if she sees someone, she'll bark, but usually after a few seconds someone from my family will tell her to shut up and she will.
well, the guy that lives directly across from my house, is an older guy, aprox. mid 50's id say. he lives in a basement suite, and everytime my dog makes so much as one single bark, hes outside screaming and yelling at my dog saying "SHUT THAT FU**ING DOG UP" and etc.
at night time, my dogs stay inside except to go to the bathroom...and i have a 7ft fence that they cant see through, so if they're in my yard barking, its because my dogs are playing with each other.
im sick and tired of this guy bitching and yelling at my dog...hes lived there for maybe 3 months...ive lived here for 25 years. what can he possibly do? cause im not keeping my dogs trapped inside my house all day just to make this loser happy, and im not putting a bark collar on my dog either.
jsut curious as to what this guy is able to do? ive heard people say that he can call city hall and i can be fined for my dog barking....
any input towards what i can do and what hes capable of doing as to getting me and my dog fined?

i had a dog that i eventually had to give away, it was constantly barking very loud to the point my neighbors got pissed. your local bylaw officer will usually be the one handling the complaint. surrey bylaw officer came to our house prolly about 4 times threatning to fine us and then we finally just got rid of the dog, never got fined so hopefully ur bylaw officer may be just as nice and give u a few warnings. also the bylaw officer "apparently" talked to alot of the neighbors and they all agreed that my dog was a nuisance. so in your case if its just the one guy getting pissed off you can tell the by law officer ur story that you have bin living there forever and no one has ever had a problem until the guy moved in 3 months ago and they may have a chat with some other nieghbors of yours and realize the one guy whos complaining is an idiot.
It's one thing for your dog to be barking during the day, and even that should not be for like anything past 3 minutes straight...but once it's past like 11pm, you're dog either needs to shut up, or be held inside. I don't see it as big of a deal during the day, but people are trying to sleep at night so uhh.....eeyahhh.....

If it's not consistent and not happening at out standing hours (early morning, late at night) then I don't think that ass has anything he can do. Read your local noise bylaw and it will say something along the lines of "animals are not allowed to be making constant noise". Dogs bark, just don't let it happen for long periods of time.
But, you could always call your bylaw officer and ask?

I'd also be worried about the sob throwing some dog poison food onto your property. Never know, right?

Keep the dog quiet, coming from a guy with a neighbour with an annoying dog, it's fucking frustrating.
I tried talking to the owner, left a letter, wrote to strata to no avail; I had to shut that POS up so I did. I trained that dog that every time it barked it got a loud air horn as an answer and maybe the occasional bb shot to the ass.

By the sounds of the OP's original statement, the dog barks and then the owners quiet it down. Not everyone traps their dog inside all day and dogs will bark time to time.
If the dog is going NONE stop, then put the mutt down as there is probably something wrong with it lol

once it gets past 9pm or whenever it starts getting dark, my dogs stay inside, if they're outside, its probably because my parents are outside by the koi pond or fire pit having a glass of wine. if my dog barks then...my parents will have her stopped barking within 5 seconds. as for early mornings, i let my dogs out around 6am for a piss, and then they come back in within 5 minutes, they never bark that early in the morning though.
even during the day light hours, when she barks, its no more then 30 seconds at max! once we hear her barking, we go check what shes barking at (theres a few punk ass kids who are constantly in and out of jail who live in a basement suite on my block, and they constantly break into cars and houses on my block....so we just check out of habbit to make sure they're not touching our shit)

If I were in this situation I would ask a few neighbors if they ever had an issue with your dog barking, and if they all say no, it's confirmed that basement suite guy is nuts. Then go for a walk over to basement suite guys house, knock on the door upstairs and let the owners know what their tenant has been doing. I know I wouldn't be happy if my tenant were pissing off the neighbors, especially by yelling "shut that fucking dog up" repeatedly.

Sarcasm doesn't convey well over the internet, I thought you were being serious too. I'd also comment that putting down dogs is a very sensitive issue for many people who have had to go through that difficult experience.

Sooner or later, you'll have to train your dog to not bark randomly. In the meantime, brown bag a pile of dog shit, light it on fire, place it at the neighbors door step, ring the doorbell and run.

My cousin bought one of those fancy collars that spray the dog with lemon everytime the dog barks. Now their little yapper doesn't make a peep.

I know for Surrey it has to be three neighbours that make a noise complaint before the bylaw people will even look into it. Usually they have to document how many times a day and for how long the dog barks. A few barks once in awhile isn't enough to get a complaint investigated. Besides as he's a tenant I would bet he probably won't file a complaint.
Maybe explain to the man that the dog is looking out for his stuff too.

my nextdoor neighbor has a GS. She barks alot too, to noise, footsteps, people's conversation from the street/driveway/cul.d.sac.....
They are very suspicious dog breed, i guess good guard dogs.
She never barks at night time though. It doenst bother us if she barks on the deck, in their backyard or garage. That tenant guy is probably just weird

highly doubt it, like the old saying goes "you cant teach an old dog new tricks"

Old dogs can learn lots of things. My shih tzu was still learning new things up to the age of 13 yrs old.

I agree to talk to your other neighbors, ask if they have had a problem with the barking. If not, then when the tenant comes outside to tell the dog to "STFU" you should yell back "NO! YOU STFU!"

im waaaaaay ahead of you, theres no houses to the left of me cause im at the top of the block, the house beside me on the right is rented out to a buncha kids who go to bcit, and then theres the house across from mine wich i doubt is even a legal basement suite where this douche lives. If im outside while my dog is barking, i encourage my dog to bark even more by saying "sick em" or "who's there?!" just so i can hear that fuck stain yell so im able to yell back at him.

I have a 9 year old shepherd who is in the same situation. But its with my neighbors next door. There is certain distance they can be on their own patio which is right by our fence before she goes ape. What i learned to do is having a spray bottle with water and i would sit outside with my dog and when she goes ape i'll squirt water at her and she would understand not to do it again. Takes time and practice.

I'm in the same situation as your neighbor. My neighbor's dog barks every time I walk through my backyard, or alleyway to take out the trash, or even opening/closing the front door of my house sometimes. Not only that, but this dog is viscous. It'll jump onto our fence fiercely.
I've already talked to my neighbor very politely about this, but all I got was bullshit about "it's a dog... what can I do?".
As a dog owner, I guess you don't care as much, but for someone who has to deal crap like this on a daily basis is just too much to bare. It's an obstruction to the peace of your own home...
I've filed in a complaint multiple times, and have requested a "package" of forms to fill out to enforce a fine on this situation. I'm also planning to take video evidence on a daily basis to further evidence...

I've heard of stories where owners will spray a solution of water boiled with chili/jalapenos etc. to deter their dogs from exhibiting their bad behaviour. Is this true or simply a myth?

That would be nasty having to carry around chili/jalapeno water. I think watching a dog whisperer marathon would give you some ideas or possible solutions.
OP: look at it from somoene elses point of view. Your neighbor is probably on oldscene.net bitching about your dog to his friends. I can see where he's coming from. Not everyone wants to hear a civic with a fart cannon even though the owner thinks it's no big deal.
I have a dog too and she only barks when there is a bear/coyote/deer in the yard. If you say her name she will stop. She knows whos boss. One time she was barking like crazy during the night and then the house alarm went off a few seconds after. She knew the theives were there while everyone was sleeping.
Some dogs do have very annoying barks though.

You should have somebody walk the dog more often. She'll bark less. Leaving her in the yard isn't exercising. Those German shepherds needs exercises.
I'd be pissed if some nut job telling my dog to STFU repeatedly though.

i live in a apartment..I have a neighbour who lives on the 2nd floor, who always hates my dog barking, even though it's only for a few seconds. she always comes down everyday to tell my dog to stfu. i told her karma will get her, she is just being a douche.....months later, her daughter wanted a puppy, not even a week, her dog barking like hell, even at night...i come to her door...she answer, i reply with "who is the b!tch now!!!!!

i live near bcit, everyday my two dogs go for a walk from canada way/royal oak, down to deer lake, around the lake 1-2 times (depending on how shitty the weather is) then walk up to willingdon, then to canada way, then up canada way till i get home. my dogs get plenty of exercise.
simply put, shes a guard dog, she see's something, she barks to alert us.
