Their screens might be good but their packaged products leave a lot to be desired. We used to sell their tv's and almost as many came back as defective ad we sold. Even a 32" tv I bought crapped out after six months and they refused to honor their warranty (coax in was almost entirely static).

TIA Supposedly, our buyer at Staples is trying hard to get some for our chain. I talked to him the other day, he said Staples USA was able to secure a lot, but he wasn't sure at that point if Staples Canada would be able to get any.

I'm surprised at the size of rebate HP is giving the stores. My manager looked up our cost on it and, after HP's rebate, we're actually making a surprising amount of money on both capacities. I would imagine that, with the limited quantity and high demand, chains are going to need to sacrifice at least some of that margin to secure stock.

As always when installing unofficial software, you do so at your own risk. Nobody (including myself and the coders of the software) will be responsible if you muck something up during the process.

1. Install Preware - Application:Preware - WebOS Internals (http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Application:Preware#Installing_Preware_wi)...

I recommend the WebOS quick install method

2. If you want to install F15C (improved kernel) or any of the not yet public release software, you need to add the testing feeds to Preware
Testing Feeds - WebOS Internals (http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Testing_Feeds)

You'll need the "ALL" feed, the Touchpad (armv7) feed, and the Kernel feed (at the bottom of the page) for access to all of the testing feeds.

3. Install F15C or UberKernel (Warthog is also available but I haven't tried it) from the Kernel screen in Preware
F15C is the latest beta kernel and allows you to OC at 1.7GHZ
UberKernel is the latest stable/public kernel and allows you to OC at 1.5GHZ

The difference between the two is pretty significant (1.7GHZ is quite a speed jump)

4. Install Govna in Preware (for CPU control) I
It should already be set to 1.7GHZ if you use F15C (but go in and double check anyways). You'll have to select the 1.5GHZ profile manually if you're using UberKernel.

The default profiles are "on demand" profiles, and will only ramp up your CPU when needed. I don't recommend setting the CPU to always be at max otherwise it'll probably hurt your battery life.

5. Install performance enhancing patches (all in Preware) - I recommend the following:
- Muffle System Logging
- Remove Dropped Packet Logging
- Unset CFQ IO Scheduler
- Unthrottle Download Manager
- Quiet powerd Messages
- Faster Card Animations HYPER Version
- EOM Overlord Monitoring (in Applications not Patches)

The easiest way to find these is to use the search function in Preware (go in to the Patches screen, click on the magnifying glass and begin typing in the name).

Note: You should reset your Touchpad when prompted, but for the patch stage I would defer the resets until you've installed them all otherwise it's going to be a very lengthy process. Definitely restart after the Kernel installation.

I really doubt HP is doing this as some form of "marketing". And I doubt any other company (like Amazon) would ever sell a whack of $99 tablets for marketing purposes.

The real problem I see is how do you ever convince consumers they have to pay the "retail" price for something after millions of people got the "bargain" price? How many tablets do you sell before going back to retail? What about people who complain they missed the sale price? Do you give them a rain-check or piss them off and say they're SOL?

I think what Amazon will do is sell their tablet at cost, or at a slight loss on the expectation they'll make back the money on purchases from their store. I don't think they can afford to sell one for $99-$149 as they can't reasonably expect every consumer to spend several hundred $$$ on products to make up the shortfall. I can see a $249-$299 tablet from Amazon which would be far cheaper than the iPad, Transformer or Galaxy (the only real competitors, IMO) and would likely give them a lot of sales.

Except that no manufacturer I know of subsidizes their products. It's the wireless carriers/providers that are subsidizing devices by locking people into fixed term contracts (essentially you're financing your device).

Amazon isn't going to be able to lock people into a contract, so they will have no guarantees whatsoever as to a monthly income from each tablet. This is why they can't take much of a loss on each tablet.

My mom got a 32GB and I've got a 16 on the way. For the price I really can't complain, there have been a couple times where it's a bit slow but it's completely stock at the moment so once I get mine I'll speed it up.

I bought the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Owned it for 36 hours. Returned it. I was going to sell the HP touchpad since I could make a little profit on it.

It turned out I preferred WebOS over the Samsung Touchwiz. Sure the hardware was super sexy, but the software didn't really feel like it justified the $600 price tag. I couldn't believe I decided to keep the Touchpad. Browsing the web on the 10.1. Multitasking lust didn't feel as good either. And 100,000 apps doesn't really matter considering there aren't a ton of Android apps optimized for tablets, and that typically I'd have like 10-20apps on my devices.

90% of the time I like to use tablet for surfing web, email, and facebook (Android doesn't have a dedicated facebook app? or am I nuts?). And I would argue that the Touchpad is better at that, than the Tab 10.1 esp at $99.

i guess just to clerify... i ordered mine on the morning of aug21, it should still be shipped right? when i checked the status on the hp website. it's still under "submitted" and the purchase date it aug22.

90% of the time I like to use tablet for surfing web, email, and facebook (Android doesn't have a dedicated facebook app? or am I nuts?). And I would argue that the Touchpad is better at that, than the Tab 10.1 esp at $99.

The FB app for Android tablets suck. Honeycomb was described by one of my coworkers as "the Vista of Android"...didn't agree at first, but I'm starting to go towards that too.

Got the cancellation email today from Datavis. Fed customers with a bunch of lies and eventually had to cancel everything. Pretty ironic though, instead of consumers trying to find it through retailers, the retailers were trying to find it through distribution centers lol.

But my order with NCIX went through today. Ordered the first day they had it for a price match. Got pretty rude emails from the ncix guys when I asked them about it a week ago but seems like it went through.

The recently deceased HP TouchPads are rising from the dead, slowly creeping toward America...

In a blog post on the company's site, HP Social Media Strategist Mark Budgell announced that Hewlett-Packard is manufacturing more of its discontinued TouchPads to meet newfound "unfulfilled demand."

On timing and quantity, Budgell had this to say:

We don’t know exactly when these units will be available or how many we’ll get, and we can’t promise we’ll have enough for everyone. We do know that it will be at least a few weeks before you can purchase...A limited supply are coming and it will be a few weeks before they are available. As we know more about how, when, and where TouchPads will be available, we will communicate that here and through email to those who requested notification.

This may be the absolute final batch of TouchPads, as Budgell says that HP "is discontinuing the development of webOS devices and is winding down device operations within our fourth fiscal quarter 2011," which ends October 31. On the other hand, some think that the TouchPad could get a new lease on life if HP spins off its PC business. During an interview with Reuters, HP's Personal Systems Group head Todd Bradley spoke about the possibility of a spinoff and spoke about the importance of tablets: "Tablet computing is a segment of the market that's relevant, absolutely."

As for price of the next batch of TouchPads, the HP blog says that it will be up to the retailers, and it is unclear whether HP will offer the $99 price point that led to such buyer demand in the first place.

Following incredible demand for the discounted units,Fast Company recently reported that, thanks to the fire sale, the Touchpad "could soon be the second best-selling tablet of all time"; though, considering HP only initially shipped between 500,000 and 1 million Touchpads during their initial run, the HP tablet is still far behind the iPad, which has sold 28.7 million units, according to recent data released by Forrester.

Not only that, but they're also locked in contract to produce for an X amount of time or X amount of Touchpads. It might be cheaper for them to finish that commitment than it is to pay off the contract.

Even at $200, it isn't a bad price as long as there is decent enough support for it.
That you will have to ask the other guys who have one to see if there is a lot of apps for it.
Something to consider. Someone said how can programers write apps for this thing when they don't even have a unit to play with.

This thing is only worth what it is being sold at, if you're looking to make a quick buck by reselling it on the secondary market, then good luck. HP is doing this to gain market saturation, not because they are going down under on one of their production lines.

If you're going to spend $200-$300 to buy this from the secondary market, spend the extra $200 on an iPad (and I HATE Apple but this thing is fast) or Galaxy Tab.

Last minute, decided to go check out the Coquitlam store.
They had 10 for sale but people were saving spots for other people. There was one guy who went to get an older lady from the mini van when they were about to open. Another fobby china couple had 2 vouchers and they were obviously together but the staff didn't care when people complained.
Needless to say I didn't get one, not that I thought I was since i went so late but to advertise one per house hold and not have a manager there was pretty sad on their part. If the staff was smart, they should have called the manager before selling the first unit, but they didn't.

WebOS has lost it's support from HP, it's only going to be a few months without any security updates before this device will become a liability to the person using it. it's use in the future now relies on third party programmers willing to either work around the problems that WebOS brang to the touchpad or bring new operating systems to the table like Android or Linux (Debian/Ubuntu or something similar) also jailbreaking is an apple term, nothing else is jailbroken
