I didn't realize people actually bought it. HP's been advertising it on TV in the states a lot though.
HP is supposed to be providing a $50 app credit for Canadians soon, so I'm waiting for that before I go purchase apps for it.
I've seen people who have supposedly got Ubuntu up and running on it (along w/ OpenOffice and Wine), but I haven't found out how they've done it or if they're just fakes.

I got employee pricing, haha. That's why I jumped on it.
Best Buy has better pricing than we get though. :(
There's pretty much NO apps for the Touchpad :( The Youtube "app" just sends you to the site. Facebook app is slow.
Hopefully they'll release a major update soon to help optimize the speed

Really? I got staff discout aswell the employee pricing last week was actually cheaper at futureshop. Either way im impressed with that thing multitasking, easy to "jailbreak", fast and the speakers are unbelievable! Apps i have so far are developer mode activator (so u dont have to do that secret code), preware, couple of games, tune in radio, fb, and yt.
I have a 32gb and gonna overclock it to 1.5ghz tonight!

overclocking with uberkernel and govnah is so easy. The tune in app is pretty good, but it reminds me how much I hate local radio because of the ads. I want a sat radio app - I have Sirius from my car's subscription. I also found it can play the mixes at fratmusic which are pretty decent.
The Facebook app is decently fast on 3.0.2 and after o/cing to 1.5ghz everything is much snappier.

We kicked out a lot of Touchpads at work the past few days, and a lot of them were employee purchases.
Not as many as iPad launch day, but not bad considering the non-Apple-ness of the Touchpad.
how much was employee purchase?
how much was employee purchase? It was 30% off @ Staples - additional $50 for owning a Pre (technically not in Canada, but I complained to HP and they obliged), so $230 for the 16 GB ...
Oh and the 50 GB online storage = win

So the only reason they're selling is because of the massive employee discount and it's mainly staff that are buying them? That's not really the sign of a good product.
I hope it doesn't end up like the playbook.
Well it's not just selling. Some companies are already almost sold out on stock BEFORE launch date. I heard that bestbuy/futureshop employees got insane discounts (over 50%) but only limited to 1 per person. That pretty much caused 0 supply for the actual launch date lol.

We got 50% off but are allowed 2 per person. What I heard was that BB/FS got close to 70% discount.
A lot of BB/FS employees who resold their Touchpads got canned I hear, haha.

Yup, I was grilling a guy on Rev earlier who got one as a "gift." Coincidentally he got the gift the same day we got our employee pricing initiative.
By all means, take advantage of your employee discount to use a product but to take it and then resell it for profit is just plain stupid, in my opinion.
HP's strategy here is to have employees own their product so they can get a proper feel for it and be able to sell it better. It makes sense to me. As an avid tech guy I'm always buying stuff at work and I'm one of the few people who can actually speak for the product and tell customers how it ACTUALLY works...Rather than simply READING about how it works on the box.

Hmm the hardware isn't that spectacular. Seems the only thing really nice about it is the IPS screen and the speakers. I really like inductive charging idea though.
I just ordered a Moto Xoom yesterday so I'll be playing with that instead. Maybe when the Touchpad 2 comes out things will have moved along a lot more.

Why buy one? Why not just have a few "loaners" that staff can take home for a couple days to try out?
It seems stupid to me that an employee should be spending their own money to learn about a product they sell for a company, just so they can make that company more money.
So the only reason they're selling is because of the massive employee discount and it's mainly staff that are buying them? That's not really the sign of a good product.

It seems stupid to me that an employee should be spending their own money to learn about a product they sell for a company, just so they can make that company more money. Loss Prevention, for one ... No corporate LP department for any major retailer would ever sign off on that ... Also, every retailer has a return policy, so it's not as if you can't simply use it for a week or two and then return it.
It's pretty much expected at my store that employees should purchase any major launch product (I've purchased and returned the Playbook, Transformer, and iPad2; still undecided if I'll keep the TouchPad or not ... My last day is next Thursday, then onto Power Engineering for much more $$$) and return it after 1-4 weeks of use. That way we can gain actual knowledge of the product and we are able to help customers if they come in with questions instead of just redirecting them to a 1-800 number.

I wanted to fail your post but out of respect to you, as I've bought/sold to you in the past, I'm not going to. However, as already mentioned, your suggestion is ridiculous.
It isn't mandatory for employees to purchase the Touch Pad. Those who wish to own one, will buy one and will get a great deal on it. The option is there for people who are interested in buying new gadgets and want to save money on them. If an employee wishes not to buy one, they simply don't have to.
Loaners wouldn't work at all. They company would end up losing money on them rather than making. It's not like working at a car dealership where they lease the car to an employee and then make it a demo model. They can't do that with these TouchPads. They would instantly lose so much money on them nationwide by making all these Touch Pad's demos. What if something happens to the TouchPad while in employee possession? Who's responsible for it? Who will bite the bill when it gets damaged or lost or stolen? It simply doesn't make sense. I don't know of any companies that provide "loaner" products to their employees so they can try them out. At least not with computers.
There are many different options that employees can use to learn about products. They can play with the demo, read reviews online, call the REP to ask questions...However, if you buy the product, you're more likely to push it towards customers, IF you are satisfied with it.
And obviously 1000's of Best Buy/Future Shop employees are NOT complaining about this promotion. If it was something they felt was a rip off, they wouldn't buy them. Yet at the same time, they're all sold out in stores and were sold out online at both Best Buy and Future Shop. Something must be working with these employee incentive, don't you think? I'm sure you would buy one with the promo if you had the chance...

^ Sounds like a shitty company to work for, IMO.
As Jmac said, at his store customers are "expected" to purchase a major product and then return it within 1-4 weeks (as per return policy). What do they do with a used product that's been returned? Sell it at full price or sell it reduced as open box? And what if the item gets lost, stolen or damaged while in possession of the employee who "bought it" as it was "suggested" they do? Let me guess, they're stuck with it. If that happened to me I think I'd be calling the Labour Board.
Maybe BB or FS don't loan items out but I know of lots of companies that do. They have insurance to protect against losses and get a tax write-off on the demo units.

H-P discontinues webOS handsets, tablets
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Hewlett-Packard Co. said Thursday afternoon that it plans to discontinue operations for its webOS devices, such as the Pre wireless handsets and TouchPad tablet. H-P HPQ -7.33% announced the move in the final hour of trading on Thursday, along with preliminary results for its third fiscal quarter. The company said it will "continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward." The company acquired the webOS mobile operating system when it bought Palm Inc. last April in a deal worth $1.2 billion in cash. The TouchPad went on sale last month to tepid reviews and has seen disappointing sales since the launch, according to various media reports.

HP TouchPad, HP’s webOS wonder has failed to make a mark on the market. In spite of the webOS “potential”, quick updates that fix the initial issues on HP TouchPad, multiple discounts, and even a $100 price cut, HP TouchPad sales are low, low, low. This information comes from AllThingsD, a reliable blog run by The Wall Street Journal.
As reported on AllThingsD, a Best Buy insider informs them that the top US retailer had ordered 270,000 HP TouchPad units thinking they would sell like hot cakes. Till now, post discounts and coupons, Best Buy has only managed to sell 25,000 TouchPads. That’s less than 10% of the stock. Another person with access to Best Buy’s HP sales numbers calls this figure “charitable” as it does not account for units customers brought back to store for refunds.
Apparently Best Buy is very disappointed with HP’s product and is unwilling to pay for the HP TouchPad units sitting at their stores, consuming expensive space. They have asked HP to take the units back but HP is asking the retailer to have patience. There’s news that a senior HP executive, possibly executive VP Todd Bradley, may come down to Minneapolis to discuss the matter with Best Buy executives.
Other retailers aren’t doing any better with HP TouchPad either. Even after a $120 discount on the tablet at Woots, only 612 units were sold. Walmart, Fry’s and Micro Center aren’t seeing a lot of movement either. Analyst Rich Doherty, head of the Envisioneering Group says that HP’s “wildcat pricing moves” on the TouchPad are prompting consumers to hold on for what happens in the next few months. They’re clearly expecting the price to fall further and it may well happen as things stand.
Will HP’s webOS licensing plans make things any better for HP? Maybe. But as far as the HP TouchPad goes, customers don’t want an OS that will become remarkable down the line; they want software that is awesome right now.
Wait for the holiday season. Lots of tablets will be toeing the $300 line, if only for retailers to offload slow moving inventory.

LOL! Dangonay is completely missing the point...What is shitty about the company? Are you under the impression that employees are obligated to purchase this product? They're NOT LOL. No one has even told a single employee to go buy them. The employees found out about the promotion through their daily news feeds at work and the promotion is through HP...It has NOTHING to do with Future Shop or HP policies. I don't think you understand how employee incentives work...They're NOT MANDATORY and they are a BENEFIT to the employee.
Explain to me how being able to purchase a product at more than 1/2 off it's retail value is a BAD THING? LOL, your assessment of saying it's a bad company to work for is ludacris lol. Like I said, would you not want to buy products at discount prices from your work? If yes, then what exactly are you arguing here?? LOL What is the down side to this? Even management got in on this deal because it was so good. It has NOTHING to do with Future Shop or Best Buy policy. We get the same type of promotions from LG sometimes and Bose. You'd rather spend regular price on Bose products?? I don't think so.
And the whole idea of why HP was doing this (as I suggested, for better marketing through employees who work at retail stores) was a SUGGESTION! I'm the one who made it and it was a suggestion that makes complete sense from a marketing stand point. It has neither been confirmed or unconfirmed. You should really learn to read posts before you make wild assumptions that are completely FAR from the truth lol.
As for anyone who thinks because the tablet is discontinued it makes it a bad product...For $100...can you find a tablet that's better than this? I can't even find a picture frame with the same screen size and wifi for $100 which is what I will end up using this for if I don't end up liking the features...

I think you're the one missing the point. Jmac said what his company expects and I quoted him in reference to my post.
In Jmacs example it seems like the company is taking advantage of the employees. Training is something that should be done on company time and the employee should be getting paid for it. By having an employee purchase a product (with the intent of returning it) so they can use it at home the company is essentially having the employee "train themselves" on their personal time. Not only that, but the risk is also placed on the employee as anything that happens to whatever they bought would be their responsibility.
To me that's a shitty way to run a company by putting an employee in that position.

I think you're the one missing the point. Jmac said what his company expects and I quoted him in reference to my post.

Not only that, but the risk is also placed on the employee as anything that happens to whatever they bought would be their responsibility.
To me that's a shitty way to run a company by putting an employee in that position. Training DOES get done on company time. For those who chose to go, we got paid to go to HP's webOS training seminar in Victoria (where HP fed us well at Boston Pizza, gave away a ton of prizes, and gave us all gift bags. Staples also paid $0.52/km which is like $60 to travel to and from Victoria on top of the 3 hours of pay for actually being at the event, half of which was spent eating and chatting.), the HP Rep came and gave us a "demo day" in the store, as well, where he spent the day demoing it for the employees and customers, and the company provides an online training module that employees get paid to do at work (though it's, unfortunately, not an obligation on most products), but if you want more hands on experience, the company isn't going to pay you for dozens of hours in the store to play with every new device that comes out. We would never actually sell anything if that's the case since we get new products in all the time ...
And the company doesn't expect it, OUR store expects it; and, again, they're not obligated to, but it makes the customers happier, their jobs easier, and their bonuses greater (we get bonuses for winning internal contests, sales to budget, profit to budget, customer satisfaction, LP audits, etc.). Having better product knowledge than the competition/other stores gives us an advantage in 3 of those categories, 4 if there happens to be a contest involving that product).
I'm not going to say Staples is an awesome company or anything, but I wouldn't say it's shitty. It's the only sales job I've had where I can actually tell the customer the truth and I have the freedom to recommend products that actually suit the customer instead of just ramming whatever is most profitable down their throats.

However, HP will be licensing webOS and he said they have a few companies that are likely to be licensing webOS in the near future (he wouldn't name names or give an exact time frame, so don't put too much stock in it).
Basically, webOS isn't dead ... but it's in critical condition ...

Why Canon?
Don't get me wrong; as a consumer, I love Canon's products. However, from working in a major retail chain that deals with RTVs, Canon was among the very worst of the vendors to deal with. If we returned a product back to Canon with so much as a hairline scratch on it, they would return it back to us, charge us shipping, and refuse the RMA. They were an absolute bitch to deal with. As a result, I have half a dozen towering skids in my warehouse with Canon products that can't be RTV'ed because there's some sort of mark on the product.
My technology associates refuse to sell Canon to customers anymore. :lol
As for the HP Touchpad, I don't think my store has sold a single unit.

I remember lining up outside the HP store on Alberni for the Alex Burrows signing (they were promoting the HP Touchpad) when this rep came up to my friends and I in the lineup and started demo-ing the TouchPad to us. Halfway through the demo he accidentally called it an iPad and didn't even notice until we told him :lol

Just a bit of insider information, many companies will be blowing through these units this upcoming weekend. My company (not saying where, but I'm sure enough searching will yield an answer) is dropping the 16gb down to $99 and the 32gb down to $149.
It's worth it at that price just as a couch internet surfing machine.

Parm104 hit the spot
Its a benefit to see employee purchases. Its put out by vendors so store reps have something to talk about to increase sales, build a connection between retail/corporate and brand awareness within the retail level.
if it was a company policy in which all retail reps were to have one. then the company should be responsible in providing the product. not the retail reps.
regardless...webOS is dying...doesnt matter which company licenses the OS. Android will still be the primary focus for major manufactures.
Also, when the last palm launched on rogers, I was never contacted by Palm to even talk about or explain the product. If there was a focus even before the palm launch in canada, this might not have happened so soon.
Now this is just from the wireless industry perspective, im not sure how Palm/HP handles with the other vendors

"HP TouchPad Overclocked to 1.7 GHz
Even before HP released the OTA update this week, homebrew solutions existed to deal with performance issues and add features to the TouchPad. Developers had identified areas where webOS fell short in running as fast or as well as it should, and released fixes called patches for them. I found a couple of these patches made a big difference in the operation of the TouchPad, due to background system logging that was happening. These patches turned that logging off and the difference in performance was significant.
I applied the OTA system update as soon as it was available and was impressed with the improvement over the TouchPad as released by HP. I then applied homebrew patches to make it even better and the result was spectacular. My TouchPad was running almost as well as the iPad, which is the goal in the tablet world."
Sounds like you're right. Gonna OC itnow.

Also, I think 4G models on the way. Infact, the White 64GB comes w/ 1.5Ghz instead of 1.2Ghz processor.People can harp on the software all they want, but I really enjoy how the OS handles multitasking compared to say, iOS. It's more streamlined and efficient than iOS.

Staples and London Drugs will not have anymore in stock and they will be selling them in stores that's for sure...Doesn't matter how many words you put in caps lock, they simply don't have them.
The only way you'll get one is by buying them online...If they come in stock again, staff members will simply be buying them before any of you.

LOL I love how people who don't own the product keep commenting on the Touch Pad's quality based on online reviews.
For $60-$150...regardless of which end of that spectrum you paid, the device works wonderfully for many uses. No one in their right mind can logically buy this product and expect it to COMPETE with an iPad or an Android tablet.
However, multi-tasking works like a charm, You Tube works like a charm, browsing on it with flash, not a problem. Want to play one of the most popular mobile games, Angry Birds? Not a problem. Any problems with Skype, nope, none! No longer have a use for it? Turn it into a picture frame. Either way, for $100, you cannot find another device that does the above listed things well. I've had this Touch Pad for a little over a week now and have yet to have any complaints about it. Other than the fact that the apps are limited, this is a great overall device.
Either way, rather than reading online reviews of a device that EVERYONE knows has been abandoned, pick one up and make your own decision. So far, in this thread, only one person has had a complaint. Others seem to be pleasantly surprised with the performance and bargain that they received.
Didn't know of the employee price drop until now.

I'm actually trying to get one myself because of the price and the potential for porting android onto it.
I'm sure it works fine and for $100 it's totally worth being able to lie on my couch surfing the web and watching videos :).

^Exactly. It's not bad for what most people really need it for. Like I said my girlfriend loves it, all she uses it for is for internet, skype, and a few games.
It's really not bad for what you get. You can barely get anything for $100 that can do everything that a TouchPad can.
I'm hoping for it to support Android and if that happens it'll be a pretty good device.

Now excuse me while I go try out Spankwire on this tablet...
its only $100 bucks now cuz it sucked and being discontinued after 1 and a half month
if it was so great, it would've been still selling at $399
I'm now laughing at the apple haters that brought one at launch.

^ With price guarantees at many stores a lot of people should be able to go back and get a refund of the difference. In fact, in a case like this I think every person who bought one would be eligible for a refund if they complained.

FROM BEST BUY USA
Best Buy's HP TouchPad Return
and Price Match Policies
What should I do if I purchased the HP TouchPad outside of the 14-day return policy and would like to return it?
Best Buy is extending its return/exchange policy on the HP TouchPad and all HP TouchPad accessories to 60 days. Come into a Best Buy store and we will help you find another tablet to fit your needs or issue you a refund.
Does the Best Buy Price Match policy still apply if I see the HP TouchPad discounted at another retailer?
No. As of August 19, 2011, the HP TouchPad is on clearance and we will no longer be selling the units so we will not offer any price matches. As mentioned above, we will still be offering an extended return/exchange policy.
interesting how they are not even going to sell it for cheap I wonder if these will all be dumped into Canada then

Hey guys
Just to let all of you know who havent been able to get one, I just ordered one through HP.ca website.
They are advertised on main page as 100$ for 16 GB and 149$ for 32GB.
However when you go to pay you will be charged 499$ which comes to 565$
I just spoke with a guy at the customer severice number 1-(800)-752-0900 who assured me you will only pay the 149$ and you can call back on monday if it is not back to your credit card, he said they may only charge 149$ on CC but assured me numerous times you will be completely reimbursed on Monday if not. He actually told me im about the 108th caller who has called about this so obv some others are aware as well
I only bought one cause im not a greddy pig and thats all i need for me, guy said none left and not a lot left for Canada so anyone who is interested should order soon.

its only $100 bucks now cuz it sucked and being discontinued after 1 and a half month
if it was so great, it would've been still selling at $399
I'm now laughing at the apple haters that brought one at launch. It's only $100 now because HP's executives are a bunch of fucking retards.
Think of all the money they are going to lose on this ... Think if they put that money into product development and marketing ... These things also sold like hotcakes for $299 in the States, which is roughly around HP's cost. When do Android tablets sell like crazy ? When the Acer Iconia dropped to $329 for a short period, but that's the only time I can think of at my store. Outside of that, we might sell a few a week between the different models.
The only complaints I ever hear are webOS is slow (which is EASILY fixed) and it's made of glossy plastic (can't fix that). These same people seem to never focus in on the positives, of which there are many. High-quality screen, great REAL LIFE battery life, inductive charging, best multi-tasking OS for tablets, great homebrew community, 50GB free online storage, supports Flash, Java, HTML 5, etc.

I picked up my 32gig today
I took it out of the box and can agree it is a bit heavy but it will be so nice to use when I travel
still for $150 i am not complaining
I was reading some articles and found this:
FROM REUTERS
You don’t spend $1.2 billion and call it quits early. That’s the amount that HP spent to buy Palm in a transition from the PC world to the mobile space. Aside from iPaq handhelds and a few early smarpthones, HP really hasn’t been in the mobile game. It is the no. 1 PC maker in the world, but that market is slowing just as the mobile market is growing. This isn’t a $1.2 billion fire sale, folks. Essentially, that’s what Steven DeWitt, SVP & GM, of HP’s webOS global business unit Personal Systems Group tweeted this morning: “Its about building new relations thru webOS. $100 off a HP Touchpad is a great deal. We r in this for the long haul!”

It's not the hardware that makes it slow, it's the software. The hardware on the TouchPad is excellent. Dual core snapdragon 1.2 GHz with 1 GIG of ram. With Android installed, it is likely to be the 2nd fastest one out there, after the Eee Pad.
It basically has the same specs as the HTC Sensation
