LOL...
The silver box on top is an amplifier ( verified by Shaw tech )
The bottom box is a Telus RAC.
Ok lets end this debate once for all.
Nodes go on poles AND cabinet depends on area of design
When a node is saturated, node gets whats called segment, so node goes to nodeA and nodeB. Each of the segment will get another router card which is 100Gbits I believe hence eases the load on the single node since now you have 2 100Gbit pipeline of internet feeding the same area.
It has a lot more technical stuff that go into them. But yes we need permission from bchydro and telus if we are using their manholes or poles.
I know this because i build them

Starting August 1, 2015, the price for your Shaw services will be increasing by $3.00, plus taxes.
I only pay for Shaws internet at $67/month after tax -> going to be $70~ after August 1st :smug:

They are phasing out all the Motorola modems which are DOCSIS 2.. if you have problems just take the modem ask for swap instead of a tech (much quicker).. I had that problem (needing to power cycle the modem every few hours) I just walked a few blocks down over the Shaw tower, get it swapped to a newer Cisco, problem solved. Apparently there will be another one to replace the Cisco in a month?
If you intend to use your own router function. (For me I rather manage my own internal network, especially I have a more than a few routers bridged to cover the townhouse).. tell them to bridge the modem before adding it to your account.

How does that 2 year deal work? I'm currently paying $93/month for 50Mbps
it's basically a contract, for 2 years. if u agree to stay with them for 2 years and keep internet 150, then u only pay $79/month for a 2 year term, then when the 2 year term ends, u move back to regular price of $135. at that point if there is still the 2 year plan offered, u can resign up a new contract and get $79/month again (if they have not raised the price for contracts after ur initial contract). i believe there is also price guarantee so if during anytime within the 2 year period they decide to raise the price of services, u still remain paying $79 only.

For those of you that's NOT with Shaw, it's actually
- $49.9/month for first year
- $79.9/month for 13-24th month
- 2 year contract
Or those that's already with Shaw...then $79.9/month X 24, 2 years contract.

Its a 2 year contract with the rate of $79.90 guaranteed during that time with no rate increase.
For new customers its $49.90 year 1 then $79.90 year 2.
There are internet only or internet+cable contract. The with +cable also locks in that rate.
After the 2 years, you can sign up again on a new contract at whatever price it is then.

Currently, my shaw account is under my dad's name. If I want to take advantage of the $49.90, will I get the promotion if I switch it to my name?
Or do I have to cancel first and then sign up using my name? That would be consider a "new" customer right?

Reps are suppose to qualify new customers based on a few different things. Kind of like how transferring the name wouldn't qualify you for the promo and swapping between people in the household wouldn't either. Its meant for people who haven't used Shaw services in a while as an enticing offer

So had a tech come out yesterday to diagnose why after upgrading to Internet150, the wifi was still only putting out 30mbps down and 6 mbps upload.
Tech informed me that the only way to access the full potential of Int150 on wifi is to be on 5G, if you're on 2.4G you're SOL and need to either upgrade your devices, or in my case with my laptop, get the 5G USB stick to "update" the wifi hardware.
Feel bad for the guy who came from Surrey just for that, when I asked him why didn't customer service just tell me this, he said "it's so new, they are just upselling the shit, they don't have any real 'technical' answers and the only reason I know is because you're the 3rd guy in the last week who has called us with this problem."

2.4Ghz wifi is shit, theres so much interference on that frequency that no matter how far i am from the router or what wifi channel i use, i can hit a max of 50Mbps on a good day. On the other hand my 5GHz connection i can consistently top out at 120Mbps on my 100Mbps connection. The down side is 5GHz frequency does not penetrate walls as well thus range suffers quiet a bit compared to 2.4Ghz, so i am running 2 routers at home.

It's an honour system. There is no real way for shaw to check if A Chan who has an account n is cancelling is related to B Chan who is a new customer under a new name starting a new account under the same address. Sales reps would usually look the other way as well cus they want the new sale.

Shaw puts out a different ad based on your IP address.
If you load Shaw.ca on a Shaw IP address then you're going to get the $80 price for the 2 years.
If you load Shaw.ca on a Telus IP address then you're going to get the $50 price for the 1st year and the $80 price in the 2nd year.

My MacBook Pro defaults to 5G, but the thing with 5G is it slows down the farther you go from the modem. In some cases, you're better off with 2.4. I tried switching and testing it. Sure enough, when I go to the farthest reaches of my house, 2.4 is better, as in more stable. In my den, I'm hard wired and it is at 170 all the freaking time. Highest ever was 180 something. Upload is the same wired 5G, or 2.4 at around 20 to 25. Seen it as low as 15.
On WiFi 5G in close proximity to the modem, 130 to 180. 2.4G is pretty fast, too.
I don't stream, torrent or anything that requires this kind of speed, but everybody else in the house appreciates it.
I'm installing a bunch of smart home devices..... or whatever they call the stuff. Modem is upstairs, so got me a second router for the downstairs back end of the house. Shaw will activate or turn the one or more of the four RJ 45 ethernet ports on the upstairs main modem to bypass mode. Can have different IP address and shit. All Chinese to me, but if it increases range, why not? My Ring doorbell will work better. None of this would have been possible if I had the old sub 20/2 service, lol.
EDIT: Just read TOPEC's post.... walls and shit screw 5G signals big time. I moved the modem into the hallway this morning and it's like night and day. Location, location, location............. lol.

Location, location, location............. lol.
5GHz wifi band is really the way to go now a days, the 2.4GHz band is so saturated no matter how good your router is. Remember tho not all devices supports the 5GHz wifi band yet, i think all apple and android devices supports 5GHz wifi since about 4 years ago, but most windows based laptops dont unless it is a high end model. A lot of people dont understand this and they bitch and yell about their wifi being shit, but sorry, ur $399 laptop purchased just last month, just doesnt have the hardware to support ur new internet connection.

question on the Shaw 150 offer to current subscribers
I got that offer for $80 for 2 years including the advanced wifi modem rental.
I'm interested in signing up for it...but if I sign up for it, would they replace my current wifi modem with the newest one? Will I get charged for it?

^they really don't care about the old modem as they're just going to recycle it(rep told me on phone). I had my new modem mailed to me and I've still yet to return my old one

If you care about performance, use a separate router (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/09/the-router-rumble-ars-diy-build-faces-better-tests-tougher-competition/) and access point instead of AIO solutions. Especially if you are going for max speed.
The higher the bandwidth consumption, the more CPU power the router needs.

I tried that I had Shaw bridge there modem for me and I used my ASUS RT-AC5300/CA and Download speed test was 135Mbps down and 6Mbps up. I had shaw unbridge their modem and I removed my ASUS RT-AC5300/CA and got 178Mbps down and 18Mbps up.
So I would stick to there product. And forget about your aftermarket router.

^ that sounds like an anomaly, or something was messed up with your router. Your unbridged speeds are what I get bridged. Granted I haven't tried the new box in unbridged mode but given how horrifically shitty the old one was I didn't see the point since I already own a high end router with loads of features.

They'll send you the new one at no charge, with a prepaid label to send back the old one. At least that's what they did for me since I told them I could install it myself.

Personally if you're looking to buy a new router, there's no point in sticking with an N-only router unless you plan on upgrading it again in a few years.
If you're looking for bang for buck, the TP-Link AC1750/1900 routers (Archer C7/C8 I believe) are almost always on sale for under $100, especially if you wait until Boxing Day (as they were for Black Friday).
I personally picked up an Asus RT-AC68U from Staples for 170, but ended up returning it for the RT-AC1900P which is an updated faster version of the venerable 68U. I have nothing but excellent things to say about the Asus, and most networking sites tend to concur.
Of course, that's just my 2c. It depends on what you want and how much you want to spend.

This Telus/Shaw/Novus promo is not really about selling the speed. They might say it this way but rather is more about bandwidth. Most of the NET100/150 comes with 1TB of data which most people will never reach but people do reach 400BG to 550GB and up these days with streaming mdeia Netflix, Apply TV, various apps ppl use to watch TV shows, movies etc etc.
Once the year promo is up and ppl went back to their cheaper package they are going to have a hard time adjusting to the bandwidth cap. So either people end up adding the unlimited bandwidth option or upgrade to the next tier of internet.
Even though CRTC is trying to have no cap internet package which do exists already. If you go over the cap you get might shut off for a few days or up to the night package. ISP aren't forcing you to upgrade, you just lost internet for a few days or they lower your speed till end of month.

speeds are down a bit for me
the 2.4 band especially...i did notice more traffic within my townhouse complex on my analyzer so that could be the case
on the 5 band i used to be the only one in my area, now there's like 4 other ones

I tweeted at shawhelp and they said everything has been fine and dandy from their end. Only a single drop from what they can see. However, I've had it drop for 3 days in a row around midnight.
They're saying it may be my power source, after which I inform them that it is plugged into the wall, and then they say it may be the problem of the cable itself. I don't know.

Recently it hasn't been great, in the past it's been rock solid at least from my experience. I was originally on Rogers and had my cable internet with them since they took over Western Canada and everyone on Rogers had to switch to Shaw in 2000 I could count my outages on 1 hand over 17 years.
I've had Telus at my work (2 different employers) from late 90s until last year, that's the definition of Spotty connection so many issues.
