Alatar
10-19-2011, 08:59 PM
That's slower than my telus optik, and my telus optik is the slowest possible optik they offer! Something like 14mbps/.86mbps!

Incidentally, I switched a year ago because I end up saving $10/mo and get more HD channels with Telus, than I had with Shaw. My internet speed is the same, as I was getting 15mbps/1mbps with Shaw, at BEST (more consistently around 6-7mpbs/1mbps with Shaw) so it was a bit of a no-brainer. Shaw wasn't willing to match or attempt to do anything for me, as an existing customer who had been with them for over 5+ years. It wasn't until the day I called to cancel my services that they offered to match. Go figure.

Unfortunately, all the major telecom companies are pretty well the same in terms of customer retention. Not willing to extend offers to existing customers as much as they are to new customers. And only willing to try to do something to keep you from cancelling.

Yeah the new routers always freeze on me after long periods of hard use. Every now and then it will cut my internet out and then come back 30 minutes later. But, my speeds are fine. Not at home right now but I'll post up my speeds when I get back to compare :P.

anyone know how much shaw charges for installing a new cable outlet?

To install an brand new outlet Shaw charges $24.95. If you have a full cable bundle you can have up to 4 outlets running full cable at no extra charge. Give the local office a call and they should be able to book a work order for an installer to come out and put one in for you.
PS: He may run a complete new line if possible or may just split off the BR one. It's best to be home when he comes and find out the options and select the best for you.

Extreme (25Mbps/250GB):
For 6 Months
$29.95/mo
Bundled Price
$52.00/mo
Standalone Price
$62.00/mo

Broadband 50 (50Mbps/400GB)
For 6 Months
$29.95/mo

$59.00/mo
Standalone Price
$74.90/mo

im on shaw's personal plan ($109/month), which includes BB50, i figured with 50Mbps and 400GBs, i would download the shows i want and screw the tv channels instead of getting all the tv channels and slow internet.

and for anyone whos on extreme, unless ur on a retentions or promo plan, i suggest u switch to BB50 as its only $7 more a month than extreme, its a no brainer

true its $12 more if its standalone, but for $12 more a month u get 2X the speed (50 consistent Mbps vs 25 powerboost Mbps) and almost 2X the bandwidth (400GB vs 250GB)

take a look at my speed test history, i too used to be on extreme, and u can tell when i switched to BB50 is almost consistent

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3560/speedtestfu.jpg

with extreme, dont forget ur getting 25Mbps ONLY FOR ~20sec, after that it dies down cause of the powerboost function

heres a conspiracy for u, shaw is fking with u extreme users so u switch to BB50, LOL

Does anyone know if Telus will charge the extra?

The age old question.. Telus or Shaw.

What I'll say is.. I just spent another 45 minutes dealing with Telus support. When their service works, it's great - but man, Telus is very unreliable in my neighbourhood and I'm spending way too much time trouble shooting issues. I've just lost my land lines for the second time in months - last time they were down for 4 days before a tech could get out and fix it.

I'm looking to go back to Shaw because I found them to be more consistent.

mini bump

my shaw has been shit lately. Torrents and speedtests still show that my internet is as fast as it should be, but loading websites is slow as hell

Finally I fixed it (for now, anyways) -- I'm assuming it's because the DNS servers shaw assigns by default are crap. Anyways, I followed this guide:

Speed Up Your Web Browsing in a Few Clicks: A Brief Introduction to DNS (http://lifehacker.com/5848823/dns-jumper-finds-the-fastest-dns-server-for-you-and-applies-it-with-two-clicks)

I downloaded the tool (it's a standalone app, so no installing) and it told me the closest DNS servers. If you have the Shaw modem/router log into it, then go to Setup, then Lan set up.

Here's my new settings (and my internet is snappier, especially RS):
http://i.imgur.com/LN8tzko.png

The first one is openDNS, which was the closest. The other two are google's DNS servers, which pinged considerably higher but should at least be reliable

I've made a very interesting observation about Shaw speed.
The company I work for has two branches, one in Burnaby and one in Nanaimo.
There is a VPN connection between the two. The VPN appliance can aggregate multiple WAN links into a big fat pipe of data.

Burnaby branch has Shaw50 as the primary connection and Telus6 as a redundant.
Nanaimo branch is unfortunately only served by Telus and has a pair of Telus3 connections (limited by length of cable to nearest DSLAM) and one HSPA/LTE antenna.

If I set the link aggregation to bias towards Burnaby Telus connecting to both Nanaimo Telus, I see average pings of 110 ms.
If I set the link aggregation to bias towards Burnaby Shaw connecting to both Nanaimo Telus, I see average pings of 60 ms.

Seems crazy that a Telus to Telus VPN is "slower" than a Shaw to Telus connection.

Anyone else having trouble with their shaw email. All of a sudden, I'm being asked to enter password and when trying to login to webmail, authentication failed. I went into my shaw account and changed the password for that specific email but did not resolve anything.

It slowed down to ~1Mbps for me a couple weeks ago in my area (Metrotown). After the second day I called Shaw and they confirmed there was no issue on their end. Magically after talking to them it was back to normal.

Just noticed that there was 3 spam mail sent out from my email, most likely the cause of the lock out.

my service was slow af as well. like 12 mbs slow when i pay for 25 with the old extreme package.. there were times where it was at 2-5 mbs.... Called and was told i had to replace my 8 yr old cable modem. AND to do that.. I had to get with their current internet plans.
Picked up my new modem and now im enjoying 30 mbs as of now... we will see how long that lasts.

Anyone know if it's possible to start a class action lawsuit against Shaw?

My internet usually drops down to 500Mbps or less after 6-7PM every day. Been going on for more than a year. Paying for 25Mbps service, one would expect to get that level of service at all times of the day.

Also, Telus only provides 6Mbps DSL in my are so there's no competition.

Shaw just keeps selling and selling, getting more people on the network node, but not upgrading their hardware to keep up the level of service that users pay for.

Not possible. Any of Shaw's internet package you pay for is only a guarantee of UP TO that certain speed (25Mbps, in your case). The agreement does not say they can provide a CONSTANT speed of 25Mbps. The best they can do is send a tech over to your residence to optimize your connection. But it sounds more like the exchange node in your neighborhood is overloaded (meaning most of your neighbors are on Shaw and are using their service the same time as you are).

which area is this? and did u actually call in and complain every time this happens? i sure hope u did so they can make note of the issue and actually look into it. they're not gonna do anything abt it if they dont know there is an issue.

Their cable internet service piggyback's off of Shaw. DSL piggyback's off of Telus.

This is in Coquitlam. I have called and I've gotten refunds twice now. They said it's a known issue and they are working on fixing it. Apparently waiting on government for permission to upgrade the node. Sounds like BS to me, but anything is possible.

Actually it's not bs, I'm not totally sure on the process but I believe bc hydro owns those poles, so any work that needs to be done on the poles needs permission granted by them first. Also I do believe city hall needs to grant permission as well, n it's usually the waiting for permission process that takes the longest. It's not like hey the nodes saturated, let's hang another piece of equipment up that pole tomorrow.

Got a call from my Shaw Business rep asking if I wanted to have a Shaw Go Wifi at my business for free.

Does anybody have any experience with this? Downsides?
Any way to leverage it for more bandwidth with a multi-wan router?

The equipment doesn't go on the telephone pole. It goes in big grey boxes called SAI boxes if I'm not mistaken.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serving_area_interface

Telephone poles are used to run the wires from the box to the house. Perhaps they are waiting on permission to add another box with more equipment? Either way, a year and a half wait if BS.

I also doubt they're in much of a hurry to improve service considering there is no real competition in the area.

Are you using the Cisco modem DPC3825 modem?
green light means data transfer up to 1000Mbps
orange light means data transfer up to 100Mbps

Yes and now its back to normal. Very weird =/..

My friend also posted this Internet & TV Rate Changes - Starting August 1, 2015 - Shaw.ca (http://www.shaw.ca/Customer-Bulletins/August-2015-Internet-TV-Rate-Changes/)

Internet is getting ridiculously expensive. If I rmb correctly, the providers (shaw, telus etcetc) raise their prices 2x each year?
