horses can easily replace taxis and taxi drivers....you can just hop on and hop off and then the next person gets on when you arrive at your destination....does that mean we should stop tipping taxi drivers?

its just the ethics of tipping....someone is providing you with a service, running around and getting you food/water and stuff the least you can do is give em a little extra. Most servers are working there way through school, some are working to feed a family. If a server does a really good job then no doubt ill tip them more than 10% but if they do a noticeable shitty job ill toss em a penny.

Its not mandatory but its a widely know (or used to be) fact that serving staffs wages were supplemented by tips to encourage better service. Meaning there wages suck and as a result your food is cheaper and the better the service the better the tips meaning the better opportunity for a server to make a decent living.
In many other countries serving staff is payed better and expected to give better service as a result without the reward system of tips.
I tip based on quality of service nothing more and my tip ranges from -%1 to %20 never more. Yes I've shorted on a bill by 25 cents to get my point across but made sure to leave a note on the bill explaining my reasoning.

As for the original post look at the floor in that place!

So why do we tip servers at a restaurant like White Spot, but not at McDonalds? Do they not deserve the better opportunity to make a decent living?

I hate the idea of tipping. So the idea is, if you're not being tipped, you'll do a shitty job of serving? I wonder if that idea translates to the every other job in the world.

Most safeway cashiers are working their way through school, some are working to feed a family. They're providing a service by bagging your groceries.

How come no one tips them?

if im a regular i just double the tax. 12% seems fair. i mean they remember you and bring you the shit you always ask for automatically, it's like a business transaction. you get a something little extra, they get a something little extra.

if the service sucks, i'll under tip, or not tip at all.

forgive me if i sound like a prick, but im not poor, my tip is no different than me throwing change into a hobos cardboard coffee cup. the difference is the hobo didn't do anything for me.

if i were poor, or that 12% really made a big difference at the end of the day, i wouldn't fucking tip. it's as simple as that.

but it doesnt.

society expects us to yes. just like they expect us to open the door or say thank you. its no different.

i learnt to tip after i worked at a job that had tips. i sometimes wondered why people were so generous. overly generous. the same service, had a tip difference of 10x (lowest vs highest).

In HK it is uncommon to tip. Usually a tiny bit of change, like $0.50 or $2 at most (and that converts to like $0.05-$0.30).

Thing is, the servers don't get the tips here. The restaurants take it in as part of the income.

And the places that do have a 10% mandatory "service charge" also take it in as income. So even when you HAVE to tip, you aren't actually tipping.

If you want to actually tip a server, you have to give the money directly to them, like cash in their hand or pocket. You see that a lot when the patrons are going for maximum face gain

I don't know why I posted an "about HK" post, but I just thought of it when the topic came up and I thought it was interesting

In Japan they don't tip at all, and if you do leave change or accidentally tip, they'll run after you with it.. I have actually seen this

safeway cashiers make more (9.50) than servers an hour (8.75) and all they do is stand and do diddly shit. How hard is it to scan, collect and bag? ....servers constantly run around, take shit from customers, take shit from cooks.

and you have to take in consideration that when you tip your not just tipping the server but your tipping EVERYONE that busts there ass at the restaurant so if the server fucks up everyone in the restaurant gets a shitty tip.
