Dear iPod nano owner,

Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.

Replacement Process

You may order a replacement unit via the web. Click here (https://supportform.apple.com/201110/) to begin.

Your iPod nano serial number will be checked to verify that it is eligible for this program. You will receive a replacement unit approximately 6 weeks after we receive your current iPod nano (1st gen).

If you have a personalized iPod nano, you will receive a non-personalized replacement. Make sure to use iTunes to back up any data on your current iPod nano before sending it in for a replacement unit.

Additional Information

Identifying an iPod nano (1st gen):

•
It has a black or white plastic front and a silver metal back - later iPod nano models have a metal front and back.

If you need assistance with placing an order, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and bring your iPod nano with you for serial number validation.

Your replacement iPod product is warranted to be free from defects for 90 days from the date of service.

I had the same problem. Keep trying and remember the serial No. are case sensitive.

Imo, these things peaked hard at the first generation. Everything else after that sucked.

I recall how excited people got at the first gen. IMO, nothing since has come close.

The only downside was the easy to scratch shiny backing. If they'd used the brushed aluminum, it would have been the perfect nano.

The article in the OP says we'll receive the replacement 6 weeks after they receive the original.

From the email I was sent after submitting my serial number:
Within two business days, you should receive the return instructions for the original and shipping materials for you to use. Please don't use any other package, because if the original is damaged in shipping as a result of improper packaging, it will not be eligible for service and will be returned to you unrepaired. Do not include any other items, such as headphones or a power cord, as they will not be returned to you. The ship time to Apple will be approximately two business days. Apple will send you an email when your product reaches the repair center.

Yeah, some UPS drivers don't knock or ring the door bell, they just drop the shit at your door and leave. One time I had a $350 item shipped with UPS and they just dropped it at my door, luckily I heard him close the gate and saw the UPS truck outside, otherwise it would've been there overnight, or stolen, since it was 6pm already.

well not really. you didnt send in accessories, why would they send you accessories? they aren't cheap. they were nice enough to replace our nanos from way back, i cant see blackberry or anyone else replace a 5+ year old device. moreover, its the current gen too. :fullofwin:

Thats weird. Which location did you drop it off at? Try calling fedex. Your name and address is on the shipping label to apple/Markham ON. Maybe they can look up your package through your address?

what are you trying to backup? i don't think iTunes creates backups of old/discontinued iPods the same way it does iOS devices. On old nanos and classic iPods there isn't much data/settings other than the music anyways. As for the music just drag and drop or sync a playlist.
