2013/2014 EDIT: Call dispatcher, El Bastardo! Do not try to reach drivers via e-mail, PM, phone call, etc. Drivers are going to be called by El Bastardo, because he has all the info on who is available, what they can drive, etc. El Bastardo is the eyes and ears of the operation.

The phone number will be posted here as soon as we get it. Also, El Bastardo used to be Tachy Cardia. If you read previous posts, that's who Tachy is.

=======================================
original post

Not sure if this would fly (pun intended), but might be worth a try.

I don't drink anymore (Easy Does It) and I don't party like I used to, either. I am willing to be part of a Revscene team that would drive RS members home from a bar on days leading up to and including New Years. With even one or two drinks being enough to get you into hot water.......

I guess it would have to be a planned thing and not so much a spur of the moment thing - although, it may still be possible.

I can cover the East Van, North Burnaby, and Coquitlam regions. It's just an idea right now. Not sure how it would work logistically. Worth discussing? I'd hate to hear of a RS member getting into, or causing, an accident.

There are only a handful of RS members I would not get into the same car with (and vice versa), but most people on RS are cool. People can subscribe to this thread, so they can be notified of a person who needs to be driven home.

What information person requesting service must provide:

To protect yourself, Call Tachy. Don't post your info in this thread, unless it is just a "heads up," post.

Time: When approximately you would like to be picked up
Address: Place where you would like to be picked up
How many people: In case you and your buddy are both intoxicated
Type of Vehicle and Transmission: Truck, passenger, auto, manual, etc.
Destination: Where you and your car are to be dropped off
Tachycardia's Edit: This service is ONLY if you've driven somewhere, gotten wasted, and are incapable of driving home. If you've planned ahead and left your car at home, please take a taxi as they are the professionals at that sort of thing.
Again, only call us if you've got to get you AND your car home.

--------------------------------------

Volunteer Designated Drivers:

You need to make sure cell is fully charged
Treat the car you are driving as if it were yours...........(most people treat their cars better than their g/f).
Bring along a two way radio, if you have one, and make sure you and your partner are on same channel.
Tachy will have everyone's cell number, just in case - either form of communication is OK, as long as you have hands free.
No speeding or erratic driving. You are representing RS.
Drive Safe!! Beware that roads may not be safe - drunk drivers. And, of course, road conditions (weather, ice, etc.).
Ask to see the drivers license and insurance papers belonging to person requesting the service and check to make sure everything is A-OK.
Respect people's privacy and do not discuss or reveal to others where anyone lives (phone numbers, address, vehicle info, etc.).
Call dispatcher as soon as you arrive and person locks their vehicle and heads inside. Just in case something happens afterwards. We will not be held responsible.

Make sure Tachy has all your info - contact info and schedule (when you can help out).

If I missed anything important, let me know and I will add it ASAP.

Most of all, thanks, guys, for stepping forward and making this a possibility.

I assume this is by donation (similar to the real red nose operation), so I ask that the drivers please post the suggested donation.

Operation Red Nose accepts donations, but it's not required, generally it's good charma to donate at least the equivalent cost of fuel for the trip.

call and get 5 rides and your 6th ride is half price!!!!

this company is GREAT, 2 people show up in 1 car (usually middle aged to older people), 1 person gets out and jumps into your car and drives you and your car home while following behind in the other car. once at your house, give them the couple bucks it costs and they leave in their car.

you and your car get home safe :) well worth it!!!! cause admit it..we've all had nights where your out with friends and you start to have a beer or 2...then before you know it your already a 6pack in...

If you drive a stick shift or generally feel uncomfortable with someone else driving your car, the other great option, aside from Operation RS Red Nose, would be BCAA if you have a membership. Once per year they will tow your car home within the maximum distance allowed by the membership for non-mechanical related reasons, like if you're hammered.

If you've already used up your one drunk tow per year, just pull a fuse and tell them your car won't start ;)

MaGNuM16
12-14-2011, 06:15 AM
just so you guys all know before you get screwed over like me... operation red nose does NOT cover burnaby, and safe ride is 40 bucks for the first 10 kms then 2.50 for every km after that. So it can get pricey depending how far you live. After reading the facebook page i probably wont be using them either...

MG1
12-14-2011, 07:35 AM
It's not so much about being nice. I am doing this because I have three children who are old enough to drive. They wouldn't get behind the wheel after drinking and they know better than to get into a car driven by a person who has been drinking. I just don't want them to become a statistic - victims who were injured or killed by another vehicel driven by an intoxicated person. My wife becomes designated driver for our kids when they are in a bind. I will be designated driver for any RS members in need. Pretty simple. I already have another person, dr.funk helping me out in this. Never met the guy, but I believe it's gonna be fun, interesting, and enjoyable.

MG1
12-14-2011, 08:00 AM
So here's how it works.

If person has car at house/bar/massage parlour, etc. and is totally wasted, they will somehow post request on RS (this thread). Hopefully the volunteers won't be too busy driving people who really don't need this service (hint, hint). Once we get the request, two people in a single car will show up. One guy will get into the individual's vehicle with the owner in it and drive it home. The other person follows and picks up the other partner and continue to help others.

If a person is at a location without a vehicle and it is waaay to late to take transit or Sky train home, one of the volunteers will show up to drive the person home.

Still some planning to do.

Hopefully, people are not going to abuse this system by purposely getting drunk to get a free ride in order to meet me or any other RS member for shits and giggles.

One question I have for you guys. Is getting a taxi to take you from DT Vancouver to Surrey late at night still a problem? If so, this service will indeed come in handy. If the distance is very far, I think driver should be compensated for fuel costs.......... or, depending on driver, making a donation to a worthwhile cause that RS supports would be wonderful.

MG1
12-14-2011, 08:12 AM
Some rules to go over:

No smoking or drinking or blow while being driven. Sex? Only if I can take photos and post them on RS......... actually, that may not discourage some people on RS. LOLOLOL

If you become belligerant, I will kick your sorry ass out of the car without hesitation and call RS Beatdown Crew.

Too soon, junior comes to mind, atm. We have, at this point in time, four volunteers.

If we had more, we can start this weekend.

Are you going to be available this weekend? I still have to do XMas shopping.

Alright. I think we can do this. We will aim for this weekend. Tachy has agreed to be the dispatcher. I guess he will subscribe to this thread and call me if and when we are needed to spring into action.

dr.funk, BaBiE_Bee, LSF22, we ready to do this? PM tachy and me your cell number and he will call us when someone needs a ride. Send me your schedule (when you are available). I don't think anyone will need a ride at 9 or 10 at night. It will be more like 2 in the morning or later. as long as it's not during a Canucks game, I'm ready to go any night. I've warned the wife already of my plans and assured her that I'm not having an affair, LOL. She said, "Just don't bring home any diseases." <------- standard answer.

Tachy, we OK with this?

I'm working on gettting custom window decals made for the volunteer drivers. Not sure what to put on them. Not sure if Operation Red Nose is OK to use, as it is probably copyrighted or something. Suggestions?

EDIT: if someone on RS wants to volunteer for their area, let's say Surrey only, and we have a member who wants to go home to Surrey from DT Vancouver, we can do a relay type thing, where we drive person and their car to the outskirts of New West or Coquitlam and they get driven the rest of the way....... hope that made sense. Again, this is first time we are doing this. No matter what, we will not leave any RS member stranded.

Back on track. We are on for tonight and the rest of the weekend.

I will be available later on tonight and so will dr.funk and LSF22. BaBiE_Bee PM'd me and told me she had plans for this weekend but will be available next weekend and probably weekdays, if duty calls.

Hopefully people won't abuse the service. When you do need the services for real, please send PM to Tachy or post in this thread (he will check it via subscription). Make sure to give as much info as possible. Type of car, whether it is standard or auto, if you are by yourself, where you are atm (duh), and where home is. As far as I know, I'm probably the only one who can drive a standard. we will travel in pairs. If you don't have a vehicle and need a ride home, please let us know that right away.

Don't PM any of the drivers/volunteers. Get in contact with Tachy. He is our dispatcher. He will call me on my cell. If it is 3 in the morning, I will most likely be asleep. If you guys recall, I suffer from sleep paralysis, so I don't sleep for long periods of time. i power nap. Tachy, on the other hand, never sleeps, so he is like the best dispatcher, LOL.

By Tachy, I'm referring to Tachycardia!, one of the mods on RS.

We don't have the capacity to handle your friends and family and coworkers and that dude that you met at that party that one time who was totally awesome so you because Facebook friends with but never saw again in person.

While we're sympathetic to their situations, we can't handle that kind of volume. We're not a free taxi service for anyone coherent enough to dial or text my number.

We're here for you Revscene. You and you alone. :drunk:

I was hoping the dude from White Rock would give some more details. It may have been possible. LSF22, you live in Richmond. You may have been able to pick him up and bring him to let's say Queensborough and I could have driven him the rest of the way to Poco. If he had a car with him, it would have been a bit of a challenge. We need one more person from the Richmond area to volunteer, so places south of Richmond can be covered. The other two volunteers and myself are in North Burnaby and East Vancouver. A person or two in Surrey would be nice.

So, operation red nose Revscene version is on till evening of January the 2nd. I am available most of those nights.

Anymore volunteers? Even if it's for one or two nights.......

LSF22, BaBiE_Bee, and dr.funk, I will get the decals made up. It will just be the usual Revscene logo with the words "Designated Driver" below. The only difference is, the window decals will be made of gold or brushed aluminum material - your choice. I think Revscene decals in those colours are rare.

I just got PM from another RS member who wanted to help out, but did not have a vehicle, atm. That's cool. As long as you have a valid drivers license and not an "N" or "L" designation, and you are not prohibited from driving for whatever reason, we can use you.

BTW, driving my daughter home this evening, I mentioned my problem with a name for operation red nose. She goes, "Why not REVS?" I'm like, :seriously:. She then explains that it is a ???? (cannot remember the term)........ REVS standing for Revscene Emergency Vehicle Service.

I'll come up with something in the way of a decal for tomorrow.

Although the thread has already moved on a bit, I'd like to say, that as much as we're all friends here, we're still complete strangers and some of us carry ourselves very differently on rs than in our personal and professional lives. When the trolling crosses boundaries, like jumping on a bit of personal information to make an inappropriate and not overly humorous joke for shock value, it makes people uncomfortable about sharing that information in the future. Don't reduce our local forum to that, please..

Common sense guys.

MG1, I'd like to help out as well.

I can only carry one passenger and live in Abbotsford, most nights I should be able to help out though. Not many RS members live out this way, but should the need for a ride arise I'll do my part. Since I'll probably be the only member of the team in the Valley, it will be like a free cab ride, your car will be left at the pick-up location.

PM tachy your phone number. If needed, he will call you. I keep my cell by the bed now, waiting for the calls. I guess he'll call me first and we will decide from there, how we will handle the situation.

Tachy never sleeps, so he is best person for the job of dispatcher. Plus he's a mod - sees and hears everything. Revscene's black........ errrr..... I mean, third eye.

MG1
12-25-2011, 03:32 PM
Yes, it's wonderful to see RS members being prepared and responsible. I think the message is getting across to people, through media. So many people have friends and relatives who have been affected by drunk drivers. A good friend will not let others drive while even slightly intoxicated (doesn't take much to get to 0.08).

Even if you are not dinking and driving, please be aware that there might be others on the road who are. Please be careful out there. Thank god the weather hasn't been treacherous these holidays.

MindBomber
12-25-2011, 03:40 PM
To remind everyone, regardless of the season or alternative methods of transportation available, walking or taking the bus can be oddly enjoyable while intoxicated. There's no reason or excuse to drive drunk, pre-plan and if you feel you'll be tempted to drive after drinking, give your car keys to a trustworthy friend who will not allow you too.

No matter how strongly you regret a drunk driving charge or related accident, after the fact there's not a thing you can do about it.

My brother was killed by a drunk driver just after midnight on his 18th birthday. It was 22 years ago, on the Patullo Bridge. The other guy crossed over the centre-line and hit him, head on. The force was so great, the engine pushed the steering column back and his chest was crushed by the steering wheel. He died instantly. His rear passenger suffered a severe back injury and front passenger got away with a few scratches and bruises. The passenger in the other car also died and the driver walked away.

I still remember waking up to the screams of my dad when he came home from the morgue to identify him. His face was so disfigured that my dad only knew it was his body from a recent scar he got from work - the DL, car, etc. confirmed it.

The last time I saw his body was at the funeral home. They did their best to make him look presentable but his face was too far gone. We had to have a closed casket ceremony to preserve everyone's memory of him.

Times like this, when families get together to celebrate, I always remember that his life was cut way too short and that I'm missing my brother. I remember the events surrounding his death as clearly as the hands in front of me.

So just remember, it's not just one person you may effect - it's a whole family. It might even be yours.

My god..... thanks for sharing the story - must be hard to tell it, even after all those years. I cannot imagine how devastating that must have been for you and your father. I would lose it if any of my children suffered that way. Totally unnecessary. And typically, the driver escapes with no injuries. The driver, if they have any conscience, will have to live with the memory of the accident for the rest of their life.

My condolences to you and your family, my friend.

12-26-2011, 09:24 AM
Thanks MG1. I was 13 at the time and don't think I fully acknowledged it til I was much older. At the time, I kind of just wanted everyone to stop being sad, accept it and move on with life. I never cried about til I was 18, visiting him at the cemetary, thinking how he was my age when he died, how much time we missed together and the kind of advice he could've given me to that point in my life. It was totally devastating for my parents and took a very long time for them to even fake living normally without one or their sons.

At the end of the day, I have to forvige the other driver and accept that he was a stupid 18yo kid that made a stupid mistake. I can have all the rage in the world and go out and kill the guy but that doesn't bring my brother back, it just ruins another family and turns me into a horrible person - I couldn't live with that on my conscience.

MindBomber
12-26-2011, 10:05 AM
Thank you for sharing Flip, considering I found it difficult to read, I can't imagine how difficult it is for you to share your story, especially at this time of year.

My cousin was struck by a drunk driver as a passenger in her friends convertible a few weeks prior to graduating high school, she had been accepted to UBC and was working as a model at the time of the accident. Thankfully, all her friends walked away from the accident and were back at school the next week, but the impact rolled the car over and my cousin took a serious blow to her head. After a three month coma she woke up, but she's not the same person. She was exceptionally intelligent with ambitions, and it now takes her months to master simple tasks like making a cup of coffee. Although the accident didn't take her life, one might say it did take her; she'll never have kids, live on her own, hold a real job, and can only manage very basic conversations.

Just like any dwi accident, it could have been avoided by a simple cab ride or pre-planning..

please everyone, regardless of the season, do not take the risk. It's not only your life on the line..

dlo
12-26-2011, 10:52 AM
Yeah, fuck drunk drivers, my friend and I was involved in a 3 car accident caused by a drunk driver. Everyone's car was totaled and the person in the other car was severely hurt. My passenger and I are still suffering from back pains, headaches and etc, but not as bad as the other guy, heard he had to go to ICU and nearly died.. Honestly for those who drink and drive, is it worth the risk? It's a gamble of your life and others when your driving is impaired.. A few dollars for a taxi isn't much, for fuck sakes, a few dollars gone wont kill you, but drinking and driving might.

Me and some friends are going to tiesto tomorrow as well but I don't know if we should use this service. It would be nice to be able to drive to Pacific Colosseum because it is really hard to get to by skytrain from Richmond, and we have a couple girls and I rather them not be cold. We have 6 people and can't fit 1 cab. I read Tachy's post and feels bad if this was a misuse of the service. Maybe one of the event sponsors can shed some light?
