that's funny, i used to have a group of wc mobas too in a 135g with the dark tahitian moon sand looked exactly like that..lol..have you any luck with them holding yet? I had a female holding for a couple of times but never full term. So,unfortunately i gave up on the hobbie awhile back now and sold it. Alot of work on water changes when you have a 135g, 90g, 75g and a 50g all running..
so i'm left with a 29g that i dont' really take care of much anymore..
still got some lights around if anyone is interested
Beautiful mobas i must say, nices group of zaires imo. If you want the deeper look of blue in your mobas. I would change one of the tube to blue..

7 fish for $1500? That's more than the usual salt water fish. Just wondering what's so special about them (they look like regular cichlids to me, sorry)?
As for me, I'm out of the hobby (5yrs ago or so). Use to have a 46g salt water tank with soft corals, but it was just too time consuming and a huge money sink. No more pets for me now, I'm raising human beings. :)
If anyone's interested in a 20g plexigass hex tank with metal stand, please pm me.

That's what I'm working with in my backyard...Got about 8/9 koi in there including a few butterfly.
Just bought a Fluvial Edge aquariaum today. Only 6 gallons but it'll be easy to take care of and I won't have to worry about too much poop maintenance. I'll be setting it up tonight and adding some tiny/small tropical fish over this week.
It's pretty unique and stylish. It has an edgeless design which can be seen clearly from all angels. Makes it look like it's just floating. Same viewing ability from all sides including the top.

I've had this pond for almost 5 years now. That picture was taken I believe in it's 2nd year. My koi cost about $20-$25 each when I got them. The butterfly ones cost a little more obviously. They were about 3"-5" when I bought them and are A LOT bigger now.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-EhHyeXL2o0I/S9KYbrh4b2I/AAAAAAAAByk/TtHBcshPsM8/s1280/DSC_0916.JPG
I've lost maybe 2 Koi in total since I've had the pond. Biggest predator has been a crane that comes into our yard but our dog usually takes care of him before he gets too close to the pond. We've had possums come in too but we scared them off with wolf urine.
When we built our pond, we had it built so there would be ample hiding spots for the fish. There are tons of crevices and holes and paths for them to hide in so we're safe from most predators.
When we go on vacations, we put a net over it just to be on the safe side.
Here's what it looked like today:

A couple days ago, a red rash showed up on the side of my Ranchu's body and now it seems to have spread to other parts of his body. I'm not quite sure how to explain it so here are some pictures:
http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/1606/img0857b.jpghttp://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5791/img0858kx.jpg
http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/6365/img0859iq.jpg
He's been eating normally and swimming relatively normal, except sometimes he will flick his body around in a weird way though he doesn't seem to be flashing as he's not trying to rub himself on anything.
On the right side of his body near the tail end where there's a bit of the red rash on it, there also appears to be something that looks similar to a blister as it's slightly swollen.
Anyone have idea what the cause of this might be and how to remedy it? I will be bringing a water sample with me to King Ed tomorrow and asking them to test it.

its harder than FW thats for sure.
and its a huge money pit
lights alone cost 200-1000 for a 3 feet tank like mine.
then if you want a sump.
you will need to drill your tank and make a DIY sump or buy one.
after that ! you need a skimmer. which runs around 200-1000 dollar again as well.
so far this week i ve been lucky buying the liverocks and livesand plus the livestock for cheap, but i just ordered my lights and skimmer etc is all in process.
btw forgot to mention,. you Have to buy liverock to grow beneficial bacteria in your tank. and you need .5-1 pound per gallon and its 10 dollar a pound. Livesand is optional.

I used to be mad into the Fish hobby but then I've slowly weened off it now because I just don't have the time to take care of them. I had MTS (Multi-Tank Syndrom)... and was at one point running like 8+ tanks, water changes alone would take up a huge chunk of my day (like 5+ hours) ... but I've cut down to just 1 small 15g tank now until I have more time in the future ... these are pictures of my old tanks that I had a couple years back ...
My Red Belly Piranha's, they are actually pretty shy, but when they attack or are frightened, wow damn they move fast ... I would NOT want my finger in there ... lol ... it's fun watching them rip pieces of meat apart though ... messy to clean up after ...

My Green-Spotted puffers, 2 of them, stalking a giant marbled cray!... epic battle time!... haha I'm just kidding, sadly my big mama crayfish passed away after I've had it for 3 years... she was responsible for having many many little cray babies so I could feed my puffers, so on this day she would be my 2 little GSP's buffet.

Haha yup ... only one 15gallon now, nice quick 10 minute water change then I can go back to doing other stuff haha ... back then with all 20 and 40 gallons all over the room I would start maintenance in the morning and have to skip lunch and wouldn't be finished until just before dinner!... I don't have time for that anymore considering I don't even have that many days off from work to begin with :(
I used to go on BCA a lot too but not as much anymore since I'm only partially in the hobby... but I still hop on from time to time heh... my future plan is to get a 80-100g tank and probably have a Fahaka ... and then start up another 20g long for crayfish feeders ... but who knows when that will be ... maybe when I retire lol!

No stores have good quality ones. If you want them you should go on BCA and talk to the shrimp guys. In Surrey it would either be Shaobo or MananaP.
If you want a "store" Canadian Aquatics in Richmond is your best bet.

Oh ya? Everyone I've spoken to at local shops have told me shrimp are the easiest thing to put in a tank. Thanks for the heads up b/c the whole reason I was putting them in is because they're supposed to be low-maintenance.

wow, which LFS did you go to?
theres many types of shrimps, but for sure fish are much easier to care for than shrimps. they're really prone to ammonia
as for CRS they're almost like discus they need alot of care and Waterchanges
what you should do is start off with RCS, red cherry shrimps. then you can go on to PFR, painted fire red. which is just a Much deeper Red than the RCS.
after you think your good. start off with A grade CRS then move on to S grade or SS or even SSS. but if you have S and SS and they breed. you will have all kinds of different forms.
whats popular on the shrimp market is the BKK. black king kong. going at 60-300 a piece !

I'm general, shrimp are easy. Cherry Shrimp or any of its variants are easy to keep. Crystal Shrimp or any of its variants are extremely sensitive. I've tried unsuccessfully to keep them and ended up with $100's of dollars of dead shrimp. I wasn't as dedicated to constantly monitor the water parameters as I should have been. Crystal shrimp are pretty picky but once you figure out the parameters and have a proper regime they're easy to keep.
I just wasn't dedicated enough to do it. If you want low maintenance shrimp try cherry shrimp, painted fire red, yellow shrimp or blueberry shrimp. The names get changed very frequently but those are the hardy ones.
OR if you just want shrimp but don't care about colors, get amano shrimp. They're super hardy and will eat black beard algae. They won't reproduce in your tank though as they need brackish water when they are larvae.
Which LFS did you go to? Most of them don't know WTF they're talking about when it comes to shrimp.
What exactly does caring for crystal-shrimp entail?
oh and to answer your question, the water needs to have a TDS of 150-200. So soft acidic water. ZERO ammonia, ZERO nitrites. Not too strong flow, not too much food and most people use ADA soil as substrate. ADA itself takes forever to cycle (> 1 month) as it has ammonia in it.
Lot's of things you need to worry about but once you figure it out you should be fine. Try with some low grade CRS if you plan on doing it right away... Read some of the threads on BCA and you can see the troubles people have with CRS.

its so cool to have ramshorn .. they all come up from being burrowed to eat
those other brown snails on the other hand.......
clown loaches work good
not in a 10g tank... clown loaches can get up to 12"+, thats bigger than the 10g tank haha

with those fish, you dont need to spend any money on anything. their really easy to care for. simply waterchanges will keep them reproducing. and if they produce then it means their happy.
equalibrum isnt that cheap if you do waterchanges often, thats why i bought a kilo of it a few months ago, as my 210 gallon needs alot just to keep the GH up.
and for KH i dont even bother, its not as big of a deal.

i have a 55g planted tank, i just got a c02 system red sea brand, but its not pumping bubbles out yet...maybe the c02 hasnt fully reacted yet since it just came with sugar and yeast. also got fluval stratum and 2 high out put t5 bulbs
still pretty new to this, only been doing this for a year.
got a few parrots, neons, harlequins, red tails, golden rams, peacock eel, golden sucker, couple corys . everyone gets along
that thing isnt the greatest because its not consistant.. it will have a higher output in the begining and taper down. i've used it before but if its a low cost/easy setup.. it will be fine
if you go higher tech.. i suggest getting a 10lb tank with a diffuser with your c02/lights on a timer

^^ Youll want to get a canister filter if you want pristine water.
Ive had a few submersible filters in the past. They dont do that great of a job unless youre constantly changing water out of the tank.
Submersible filter wont really be enough in a 55-60g tank depending on your stocking list.
Theres not enough media in a submersible to hold waste.

None of them looks like a good deal, If i were you, i would :
buy the on sale tanks at king eds, 75 gallon 99 dollars, and stand 150. thats $250
and then I would go to Charles On BCA, as I m sure your on it because I saw your thread. ask him for a 4 foot fixture, which he has for cheap. (Id go with led Beamswork LED 600 - freshwater bright 36-48" for 75 bucks, Just because it gives you that ocean floor effect) lol
and filter, I would rather go HOB than canister, I dislike canister because I often get the Layer of Oil on top of the water.
but none the less, its personal opinion.
with my option atleast you got everything NEW
BUT, the setup your leaning towards, seems like you could bargain quite a bit ($200-220) with that seller because hes moving, But if its just an excuse.. then they wouldnt budge. and also, tell him you dont want the filter and you want another $50 off the $200 or $220. and go spend that 50 bucks on something better.
BTW, forgot to ask the most important question, what are you planning to put in the Tank?

maybe someone can help me out here
I still seem to be having a hard time keeping my plants, none are dead, but some leaves and curling and going brown, and some almost look burnt.
anyways, I have 2 35w high output aqua glow lights on a timer for 8 hours, I got that small redsea c02 system, fluval stratum, and add seachem excel everyday and seachem comprehensive plant supplement 2 times a week. any tips or pointers?
thanks for the reply xilley! But i ended up picking up this setup: FS : Equipment and Tank (Quitting Hobby) (http://www.bcaquaria.com/forum/classified-archive-29/fs-equipment-tank-quitting-hobby-24868/)
off a buddy. great deal and he threw in WAY more than what was in the ad
and incase youre still wondering, i'm housing community fish. just tetras, angels, clowns, rainbows, some sharks, the usual basically!
ill be sure to throw up some photos when my fishes new home is up and running!

2x35w on a 55g is only enough for low light plants (i.e. java moss)....most plant will "live" but won't grow much.

maxxxboost wow that looks great! How big is the tank? Is that a 150g?
So you build the stand from scratch too? Painted and everything it looks great! Maybe you can build one for me one day? ;)
The tank is only a 55g
Yeah, the tank was build by 2x4s from scratch.
If you need any assistance in building a stand, i can try to help. I helped my friend build his and it turned out totally different. hahaaha. All i got to say is measure twice, cut once. Better yet, get the hardware store to cut all your wood for perfect cuts. :D

Hmm nice setups. Didn't know there was a fish thread here on RS. My tank started nice.. then went to craps :( Largely due to laziness and a damn hitchhiker in my live rock.
Running saltwater Hex tank 35g. All that's left is a Gobi and a freakin mantis shrimp.

Whats a good way to get rid of algae ? So far i have covered the tank with black garbage bag so no light can get in, only been turning tank light on for 1hr when i feed them and have been using special filters to get rid of it, i have 3 algae eaters and have been doing 1/2 water changes every week but it still looks the same. The water itself seems green.. Any other ways i can get rid of it? Tanks been covered up for around a week now. Ive got a freshwater tank 30 gallon with basic tropical fish

sounds like an algae bloom. What you need to do is do a proper black out for three days.
Next is to find out what the cause is. Green water is usually caused by:
1. too much light/direct sunlight
2. high phosphates
Take your water in to the LFS and get the water tested for phosphates. If they tell it's high, you need to feed less and do more water changes. If they tell you it's fine, you need to reduce lighting. Out of direct sunlight and reduce artificial lighting to 8 hours or less. Do a proper black out to kill the algae.
Cover the entire tank and don't feed or turn on the light. Your fish will be fine, most fish and handle not eating for over a week so 3 days is nothing. Don't peek to see how it's going. Do a water change immediately after (the algae will die and increase nitrates)
To get a better idea of your tank, how many and what type of fish do you have in your 30g? What type of lighting and how long do you leave it on for?

No special kinds of fish.. just 2 small suckerfish, one big one, alot of diff kinds of tetras, a few guppies and a 2 other fish cant remember what type right now
Ive had the tank for 3 months and it was always CRYSTAL clear just recently it started getting green. Must be because there is a window nearby.. Usually leave tank light on for 8hrs, not sure what kind it came with the tank and has a purple hint to it
Ill do what you suggested.. The other day i did a 50% water change and covered it up

LOL D,
One tank is hard to do. You'll eventually probably take it easy at 3 tanks.
Most i've ever run was like 5 tanks. 9 is insane. A whole room with 20+ tanks is a full time job. Problem with us MTS peeps is you always wanna try keeping everything.

^ LOL exactly ... it all started with a little Betta ... then I wanted to give my betta more room to swim... so from fishbowl to a 5g ... then I got into Piranha's. Naturally you can't keep them with ANYTHING without it getting devoured ... so I had to get another tank for a community tank ... and then I got into various crayfish ... then I had a feeder tank for my Piranha's ... and then I got into Puffer's that also couldn't be kept with anything else without being torn to shreds ... and then I had a snail and shrimp tank as food for my puffer ... and then it just snowballed from there lol ... it was getting tedious spending hours upon hours every week just maintaining everything so I went cold turkey and sold it all in one swoop last year! ... :fuuuuu: now I'm back with 1 tank for now ... well ... shit I'm currently cycling a 2nd tank already ... :ilied:

got it shipped from peru? was it cheap?
It's pretty expensive due to the water weight and it needs to travel from Lima->Toronto-> Vancouver so in all around 16-20 hours airtime.
Not great for the fish since the oxygen is almost depleted by the time you can get them home, but after the uphill battle you can get really great fish for a pretty good price. It's definitely quite a hassle to bring them in though. :okay:

Seems a tad crowded for a 12g, but then again I'm use monsterfishkeepers tank sizes so I might be a bit biased
As for introducing. You can do it all together when the water has been cycled, doesn't seem like your choices are aggressive

Also.. which fish should i put in first ?? and how long before i can introduce another one ???
Haha welcome to the dark side! The pleco you are looking at won't grow very big so you will be fine wioth that setup, but you gotta keep up the water changes haha
Obsideon, what are you feeding your axo's?
Salmon pellets is his staple food, sometimes worms and lean beef, and the occassional feeder.

HELP !! lol.
So i ended up buying 5 guppies... 3 male and 2 females...
Everything seemed great during the first two days
On day 3... i noticed a wack load of frys... :)
at 6pm on day 4... i found the two females....... DEAD !!!!!!!!!!
WTF is going on ????
should i buy more females?? or have a tank with males? I read online about males harassing the females to death.
^ LOL rapid respawn
You should let it be unless you want more fry. Hope you put the fry's in a isolation tank.
Probably too much bio load. Separate the babies in another tank and do a large water change. Also its nice to have a test kit at home so that you can pinpoint the problem.

I will do a PH test tonight.
I did a 50% water change the other day too... the water seems alot more clear... :)
I actually never intended to breed or anything. I do not have a second tank nor do I want to invest anymore money into this new hobby of mine.. lol..
Is it ok to have 4 male guppies and 8 fry in a 12 gallon tank ???

hook up some fries when they get bigger? lol
yeah guppies and convicts and many others breed like crazy
just put a male with a female in some water and its gg

Yeah sad about the fish ... but I think after some thought, 3 males probably harassed the shit out of the 2 girls so they got stressed out which leads to easily getting sick.
I would just leave the fish as it is for now.

I dont have a second tank to put all the frys in.... so........ i looked yesterday... there are only 2 left..
the water is still a bit murky but think its from the drift wood. I will try to remove it this weekend.

I've bred guppies in one tank with the parents before. If you have some java moss then should help the fry hide and feel more safe.
How old's your tank? 5 days only? Fish might have died because the there's not enough beneficial bacteria for the amount of fish you have. You can't rush "cycling" the tank properly. It's common n00b mistake. I made the same when I started. Should probably only have 2-3 fish for a 10 gallon for a few weeks.
If your water is brownish it's from the wood it usually isn't an issue. It will lower pH though.
If it's cloudy, it's likely a bacterial bloom due to the fact you have too many fish and not enough good bacteria.

Im planning on redoing my whole 20 gallon long tank with plants, neons, and pygmy cories. Hoping everything will work with DIY c02 system.
Anyone here got a planted tank? Show some pics.

I'm in the same boat. Fake plants are just that. Fake. Some fake plants look alright, but can't hold a candle to a tank with some nice real ones.
Anyone have any suggestions for some good beginner plants? I'm not planning on having a co2 system or anything, just a proper bulb. :D

What you are planning to do with it?
i have no clue right now man,
thinking of just cycling it throw some plants n and make it pretty first,
right now i only have a angel tank running,
in the past ive had cichlids, gourmais, red parrots,
jardini arowana, flowerhorn, id sharks(these got way too big)
i was thinking maybe kois, throw 9 of them in there and when they get big, id have an excuse to get a fat tank LOL
xilley
06-28-2012, 12:28 AM
and when you get a fat tank let me know, I ll sell you one of my 210s

that a 6ft tank?
i was thinking of building one muahaha dads friend owns a glass company so i just gotta make sure i can seal it properly, or maybe go plywood with glass up front.
but then again ive been thinking about it for the past 4 years LOL
xilley
06-28-2012, 01:29 AM
yeah 6 feet, sealing it yourself is risky businesss mannn lol
viet604778

Go rimless and brace each glass to the centre, rimless tanks look way better imo, since your dad friends owns the glass shop you should be able to get those thick glasses.

if i catch the small ones can i bring it home?
if so what do i feed them?

havent been there for a while, but if I remember correctly you need a license to catch any wild livestock.

No, it's illegal to take those fish home. A better response would be why would you want to do that in the first place, they aren't even nice to look at.

i just fin resealing my 240g tank i have 3 kois and 2subunkin gold and one big fancy gold fish im still waiting for my super red aro to come in XD
ive got a 135 gallon plexi glass with a stand for cheap
its a 6 foot long tank
its not in the greatest condition but clean it up a little and you add water and it definitely looks alot better then when empty.
i was housing my arowana in it but i've upgraded to 210g
Bored in Asia, friend's going to donate a 100g. I'm thinking of hardscaping it. Any cool fish you guys recommend? I only had a 30g back in Van.
Paroon sharks look awesome but apparently they grow to crazy sizes, so I'm ruling it out. Any similar sharky looking fish?

Sounds like you're on the right track. Just remember not to rush things. New tanks need time to settle in. If you're good with maintenance you can always go past the 1"/gallon rule.
Another small fish that's quite nice is the Galaxy Rasbora. Newer to the aquarium trade.
