John Wall earned a huge ovation from the crowd at Cox Pavilion during introductions Thursday night, easily the biggest cheer for any of the Wizards or Mavericks players. By the end of the game, the crowd had turned on Wall and was cheering for Dallas's Jeremy Lin, the undrafted point guard out of Harvard who scored nine fourth-quarter points.
When Lin split two defenders and was called for a charge, the crowd erupted in outrage, and media members joked that it finally sounded like an NBA game, what with fans yelling at refs. When Lin later guarded Wall closely and was called for a foul, someone screamed out "quit protecting him!"
There were also a couple times when Lin scored, and Wall seemed to attempt an immediate offensive response on the other end.
"I wasn't getting into no back and forth," Wall said. "He was just making great plays coming off pick and rolls and getting into the paint and making shots."
And if you watch the video above, a great many of Lin's highlights didn't actually come against Wall. Still, for a third game of Summer League, it offered a nice little diversion, and Chris Webber certainly seemed to enjoy the matchup. So did Zach Harper of Hardwood Paroxysm, who wrote (via True Hoop):
"The kid from the Ivy League refused to back down from the YouTube sensation and while Wall walked away with the highlight reel, Lin walked away as the fan favorite.
I saw this on the score highlights yesterday.i have so much more respect for chinese b-ball players cuz of this guy. We'll see this kid in the NBA for sure. check out the move at 3:06

More like a bench warmer.
There hasn't been any skilled Asian basketball players.
The only reason Yao Ming is so popular is because of his height but even he's injury prone and not very good.
This guy will be lucky to get any playing time since he isn't even drafted.

Not if you consider how many Asian there are in this world.
If anything there should be more talented Asian players playing in the NBA.
Its not like basketball isn't popular in Asian. I see like tons of fobs playing in Vancouver

yup. Not the best but I can hold my own on the court.
Use to be point guard for my high school team went to provincials
Could have gotten a scholorship if I spent more time practicing
Qmx323
07-17-2010, 01:44 AM
True but you have to see that the NBA isn't just 'talent' defined as being able to shoot well and dribble well, these guys in the NBA are also athletic as fcuk, combine that skill with athleticism and you get the average NBA player
Jeremy is considered an explosive athlete in Asian standards, and is outplaying many other PG's at the summer league level, hes giving himself a chance to play professional sports which is already extremely difficult, let alone possibly being the first NBA player from TW (Chen Hsin-An played with the kings summer league team way back in 02 and 03, his performances were not even close to Jeremy's performances)
It's just something that is considered neat to certain people
Manic!

wow, this kid Lin got some serious game... very active feet, great ball handling and athletic enough to hang with the brothas which is nuts... and he has excellent reflexes around defenders which is very important for a point guard because you can have the best ball handling ability in the world, but if you ain't got the reflexes good enough to react to your defenders and pick and roll situations, you ain't playin no PG at any professional level
MQR just racking up the fails... have you even seen Yao Ming play ? already one of the best centers of all time, and I know a little somethin about basketball because I actively play unlike a "use to be point guard"

Yao's great and all but hes not one of the greatest centers of all time yet,
definitely in the modern era though. If he can play for 3-4 more years at his level now and stay away from injury (can't really blame him for being 7'6, it must be hell on the knees/ankles) then I would put him in the top 10 all time.

Of course I have, who hasn't. Other than being a decent post player there's nothing really different to him like other gigantic freaks from the past.
Shawn Bradley, Manute Bole(rip), Gheorghe Muresan all have one thing in common tall, slow, injury prone, not athletic. Being over 7"0 is hard on the body and NBA is really physical game.

I can't believe you just compared those guys to Yao just because they're similar height. Their only claim to fame is a few awkward blocks per game. That's the ONLY thing they were good for, they were never scorers or defenders, just guys who had a presence in the lane to disrupt opponents get a few blocks a game and that's it.
Yao is much more than a "decent post player" he's a "dominant center" and this is acknowledged by all of the basketball world. He has an amazing skill set especially when you consider his height, from his co-ordination to footwork, his post play and his defensive presence and let's not forget his shooting, he's got one of the smoothest midrange jumpshots of any bigman in the NBA. None of those guys you just listed could do anything you see in this clip. I was watching this game last year too goin nuts, he blew up in the start of the game.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Jeremy Lin took a seat in a small room in front of an array of television crews, photographers and print media on Wednesday afternoon. He'd never seen anything like that at Harvard.
"This is unbelievable," Lin said after the Golden State Warriors signed the undrafted free agent guard. "I've never been part of something like this."
He became the first Asian-American player signed by the Warriors since 1947. In an area with a large Asian population, Lin becomes an instant celebrity.
Story continues below ↓advertisement | your ad here
"I consider myself a basketball player more than an Asian-American," said the Bay Area native. "I'm ready to play at this level and I appreciate the support of the Asian community. This is a dream come true. I always wanted to be in the NBA and now I get to do it with the Warriors, the team I grew up watching."
The 21-year-old Lin averaged 16.4 points, 4.5 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game as a senior at Harvard. The season was highlighted by a 30-point, nine-rebound performance against Connecticut.
Lin is from nearby Palo Alto. He led Palo Alto High School to a state championship in 2006.
"This has not sunk in yet," he said. "I've had a lot to think about the last 12 hours and I still can't get my head around it. Growing up I had my Latrell Sprewell poster and Joe Smith jersey."
Lin became a prospect during his final year with the Crimson and furthered his worth playing with the Dallas Mavericks' summer league team in Las Vegas.
Mavericks president of basketball operations Donn Nelson called Lin before the NBA draft and offered him the opportunity to play in the league. He was originally scheduled to play in the San Francisco Pro-Am League.
"Donn Nelson took care of me," Lin said. "He invited me to July 4th festivities, brought me to Dallas for a 10-day training camp and went out of his way."
Lin became the first Ivy League player to record 1,450 points, 450 rebounds, 400 assists and 200 steals. He finished his college career as Harvard's all-time leader in games played (115) and fifth in points with 1,483 points.
"I understand there are not many Asians in the NBA and there are not many Ivy Leaguers in the NBA," Lin said. "Maybe I can help break the stereotype."

We have the asian Alex Burrows of the NBA. This kid was undrafted and has a tremendous work ethic and insanely high basketball IQ
7 days ago he was the 4th string point guard for the knicks. Had his career game 3 games ago and isn't looking back.
He put up 38 points today against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers to lead his team to a 4 game winning streak. The most points scored by a Knick this season
Kobe wont be sleeping tonight he's got Linsomnia!

Q: Did the Lakers talk about him in the locker room?
A: Do we talk about him? Yeah, we talk about him. We think he needs a better haircut. I don’t like that style. You’re in New York, the fashion capital. Change your haircut, OK? You’re a star now. Wear some shades. Shades, OK? Put down the nerdy Harvard book glasses. Put on some black shades, OK? With some leather pants. Change your style. Fashion.
Q: Do you wear leather pants?
A: No, I won’t wear them, but he should wear leather pants. He’s the type of guy who should wear leather pants, some nice shoes and change his fashion. You’re Jeremy Lin, for godsakes. You know what I’m saying? You know? Put down that law book, stop reading the New York Times and start reading the Daily News. Newsday, that’s the one. I like that one because there’s always color in that one. What else? Wall Street Journal. Get some swag. You’re in New York City. Put your hat to the back, too. Put your hat on backwards. Come to practice with your pants sagging and just tell them, 'I don’t feel like practicing.' Practice? You know? Practice? And wear an Iverson jersey. You know? Come to practice with a cigar. Lit. 'I’m Jeremy Lin.' You know? He should change. We're all excited to play tonight. It’s like the first time for everybody. Everybody’s excited. Kobe’s excited. He wants to get 50. He wants to welcome Jeremy Lin to his new level."

This! Lin is legit and pretty good, but he's in the perfect system, played his first few games at home, and the teams he's played are not the top teams either.
Hell the lakers played 5 road games in 7 nights and this was at the end of their road trip. lakers played boston the night before and boston lost to the .. . . raptors.
I notice he's not as effective when he drives left, so teams will stop preventing him from driving right, and force him to make outside shots.
I want him to succeed, but it will be tough since Melo/Amare and Baron gets back. I really hope he doesnt become like Tebow, where it's mostly hype and mockery and you have half the fans hating the guy and half the fans loving him.

Carmelo had bought into moving the ball around for over a week before his groin injury, and he will have to operate within the construct of Lin and D'Antoni's vision -- not the other way around...Both he and Amare will keep Lin's scoring numbers in check, but they will virtually guarantee Lin is productive every night due to the weapons he will have...
Also, Tebow won national championships and got drafted...Lin went to Harvard and went undrafted...different expectations, so what Lin is doing is more impressive than Tebow.
Anyway, it's halftime vs the Wolves and Lin has 15 points on 7/12 shooting to go along with with 4 dimes, 2 boards, and 2 steals; he's on pace for 30 and 8.

Rookie point guards often get turnovers in high volumes. There's a learning curve. I know he's not technically rookie, but he might as well be...

G-spec
02-14-2012, 10:54 PM
The problem with NBA scouting isn't that they're disregarding anyone who isn't black, it's been the fact that scouting styles change every few years.... For example the scouting in the early to mid 2000's (Yao, Nowitzki, Ginobili era... ) it was overseas fever, every team was trying to land some kind of European or international superstar.... So that time was the height of Asian imports like Yao, Wanh ZhiZhi and Yi JianLin... but in the last few years they've specifically been looking for physical features like wingspan and length mostly for defensive and rebounding capabilities.
Obviously young black males fit this profile almost exclusively so that's where every teams attention is right now, most if not all teams have gotten past that *must find international star phase* which was actually pushed as an agenda to globalize the game further by David Stern the commish, and now they're back to homegrown talent almost exclusively.
The thing that impresses me about Lin is that every Chinese player that's been in the NBA has been a physical specimen, tall, huge, skilled.... And Jeremy Lin does not fit this description so its even more amazing...
But there was 1 exception to this and I remember it well and for the hoopheads, I gotta say this definitely reminds me of Yuta Tabuse who bounced around on a few NBA teams, and was always solid, and this fckin guy was 170lbs and 5'10 with shoes on! I remember when I first seen it I couldn't believe I was watching an asian guy who wasnt around 7 feet playing in the NBA... he first showed up in Phoenix in the early 2000's, so even then it was still crazy seeing Asian players in the NBA, but to see one of his stature holding his own was crazy

I'm all for the Lin-wagon right now but to take a step back and take off the Linsanity glasses, look so far he's lined up against:
D-Will - by far the best defender of the group but he is on a CRAP team that has no help defense AND he has to carry the offense load for the entire team, he must be tired.
Devin Harris - Shell of his former self
John Wall - He got owned by Lin even in the Summer leagues so anyone could have seen this coming, plus his defense is atrocious!
Derek Fisher - WAY too old to do anything now ... I don't even know why they still have him around ... only cuz he's Kobe's buddy?
Rubio - All flash and fancy plays, no defense.
Calderon - Never known for defense.
The game before that, although a SMALL sample size because he was still relegated to backup and only played 7 minutes, but he was shutdown by Rondo, 0-3 from the field, 2 points, 1 assist.
I want to see what he can do against the ELITE defenders before truly seeing what he is worth. I want to see him face Rondo again head to head, or Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, Westbrook ... especially interested in seeing how he can adjust his strategy playing against Orlando with super blocker Dwight in the paint at all times. I doubt he will be able to drive like he does against Dwight like he did to the Nets who have Kris freakin' Humphries guarding the rim lol ...

I've really lost interest in the NBA since the Jordan, Barkley, Robinson days and can't really stand the league these days but I think its a great underdog story and good for the kid, not sold on him yet, but good luck to him.
How Much Is Jeremy Lin Worth To MSG? - Seeking Alpha (http://seekingalpha.com/article/364841-how-much-is-jeremy-lin-worth-to-msg?)
Madison Square Garden (MSG) owns the Knicks, as well as the New York Rangers, a minor league hockey team and a WNBA team. The company also owns the eponymous Madison Square Garden arena, some other venues, and other media holdings including television stations.
Today, because of Jeremy Lin, shares hit a new 52-week high of $32.30. With 62.08 shares outstanding, today's move up of $1.15 means the market thinks Jeremy Lin's weekend success is worth $71.4 million.
Whether Lin is actually worth that much or not is a debate that won't be able to be settled. Certainly he has revitalized the team, sold a lot of jerseys, and perhaps made the Knicks much more popular in Asia. There's another piece of the puzzle that adds value to Madison Square Garden. As Mike Ozanian from Forbes points out, Lin's success may finally cause Time Warner (TWC) and Madison Square Gardens to settle a more than month-long dispute that has caused the Knicks and other MSG Network teams off of Time Warner Cable since January 1 because of a rate dispute. The Jeremy Lin-mania may cause Time Warner subscribers to jump ship in order to see the Knicks. Up until this past week, the team's dismal play hasn't given lukewarm Knicks fans a reason to switch, but that all may change. Time Warner would then lose much of its leverage over the dispute.

Besides his basketball skill and IQ, what also impresses me is his humble heart, "team first" mentality, and positive attitude during games.
Once he has more experience with defensive coverages and spends more time to work on his long range shooting, and gain more upper body strength, he'll be even better. Lin's gotta bring that average of six turnovers per game lower and improve his shooting in order to bring his game to the next level.
The Knicks are certainly cashing in on the Linsanity. Jeremy is bringing the smile back to the NBA! :)

There's nothing wrong with rooting for the only Asian NBA player that got under drafted.

I wonder how Lin will response to the critisms when the NYK winning streak is over. Seems like the camara doesn't even go to Melo anymore, or is he even attending games?
I want to see him play D-Rose, but that's only if Lin can last until March 12th.

I'm pretty confident in stating that the people who are suggesting that he might not "last" and those who are suggesting that he's "done" after this "hot streak" are all people who don't really follow basketball, but rather just keep in touch with it so they can join in on conversation...Try watching the kid play and you'll see that he absolutely strives running D'Antoni's offense. I personally don't think he'll be able to keep up this current production when Melo comes back, but I'm not going to ignorantly suggest that he's going to be "done".... As some others have said, I'd expect his numbers to drop around 17 and 8 once Melo comes back; though, I wouldn't be surprised if they were higher...
I'm hatin all the band-wagoner fans...

Oh I follow NBA ritually even before all this Lin-sanity lol ... which is the reason for my above post regarding his PG matchups so far. I still believe he is in the perfect system right now with D'antoni's style of coaching and IF (that's a BIG if) Carmelo can adjust when he comes back, he would be able to boost Lin's assist stats even more and take defensive pressure off Lin. If Melo becomes the old ballhog of the past then Lin will see a significant drop off. Then if the Knicks start losing again ... oh man the NY media is gonna all over Melo's ass!

I don’t have to try to get Amare 20 points, try to get this guy 20 points, me try to go out there and get 25-30 points a night, play defense, rebound do the whole thing.” –Carmelo Anthony, New York Knick

Lin will be a restricted free agent after this season and the Knicks are up against the cap thanks to the salaries of Melo, Amare and Chandler; But they can still retain Lin by using their mid-level exception for next season to match or exceed any offer sheets their new point guard gets. Lin is locked in. ;-)

Knicks will be fine when Carmelo comes back as long as Novak/Fields/Chandler keep playing well. Any double teams for Lin, Stoudemire or Melo will result in shooters from the perimeter being wide open. Novak hits threes like free throws and Fields can shoot pretty well.
Chandler/STAT/Melo/Shumpert/Lin -> freaky athletic lineup
Novak, Fields, Bibby, Walker, Douglas and Jeffries can contribute
Knicks need a defensive Big man off the bench who will just play defense and rebound (Think Reggie Evans)
I've loved the knicks since Allan Houston and Spreewell were a problem. The atmosphere at MSG is amazing, every game feels like the playoffs and you can't help but stay standing and cheer them on.

Im interested to see how Melo will play in the 4th quarters. I doubt he will get much touches since NY has so many more weapons like you mentioned.
NY will be fine if Anthony doesn't complain about his stats
Not really racist!

Another win for the Knicks
Career assist night for Lin
D'Antoni's systems all require a serviceable point guard that can shoot, pass and penetrate.(think Nash on the suns) Pick and roll up top, and spread the floor. Teams will have to double team/collapse on someone which means someone will be open.
Players lose athleticism over time and production drops, B-Ball IQ is something you can't teach and will age well for extensive years.

But thats the whole point. Lin would have so many options to choose to win the game. So why rely on Melo? if melo can take a step back from the spotlight and share the ball, like I said, the knicks will be fine.
If melo doesnt share in the 4th, then the ball rotation stops and it becomes a half court game in which the knicks system wont last (think how the spurs kept on beating the suns back then)
Dont get me wrong, I like anthony and want the NYK to succeed. But i rather see it with my own eyes than hear it from reports ( in which he proclaims he do this and that)
If melo doesnt share in the 4th, then the ball rotation stops and it becomes a half court game in which the knicks system wont last (think how the spurs kept on beating the suns back then)
Carmelo will score on most players one-on-one, throw another guy at him and you're in trouble.
You go to remember that Carmelo is an all star and he will command the defense's attention whether or not he has the ball. He's a smart player if you remember his syracuse days, he would score TONS of off backdoor cuts and off the ball jumpers. On Denver he was giving the reigns as their superstar so you can't blame him bringing that mentality to the Knicks. The Denver nuggets basically gave Carmelo the ball and he could do whatever he wants. Pair him up with a guy that can get him the ball where ever he wants without double/triple teams, Carmelo will score most of the time.
Carmelo is a very important asset regardless if he's putting up points or not. He is one of the quickest forwards in the game and can definitely hold his own against stars like Lebron/Kobe. Once Carmelo gets the ball and penetrates he's an excellent finisher or he'll find someone open for a jumper whether it be Lin, Novak, Fields, Shumpert or Bibby.
The main problem is Amare. He's got to stop taking jumpers, get his ass in the paint and rebound. There is NO excuse for him to average less than 10 rebounds.
You've got a hard-nose defensive minded center in Chandler, All-star calibre forward in Amare, a terror on the perimeter and in the paint Carmelo, an athletic slashing guard like Shumpert and a point guard with a high basketball IQ in Lin.
Success

i think you are missing the point.
yes race is a big thing here, but that's probably the reason why he was undrafted in teh first place. So to see an underdog story unfold and still being so humble about it (giving credits to his team and his belief) after such a hot streak warrants all this attention.
side note...he's always lived in the US...dont know why you mentioned chinese taipei as if he's in a baseball team.

You know what pisses me off.
These types of facebook updates...
"I'm sick of hearing all this stuff about Lin, he's good, but hasn't proven anything"
Coming from people I KNOW who do not watch bball.
It's like wtf do you know? I mean I would say i'm a bandwagoner, but I probably spent the last week familiarizing myself with Lin. I was watching his highlights from early on in the year and he was playing well when he got his shot.
The reason he broke out was because of all the injuries on the knicks. It worked out perfectly.
I think people should give Lin credit where credit is due. The fact is he's in the NBA, off the bench, dropping 20+ points a game, 38 points against KOBE and the Lakers, has completely energized his team, the country, the world, and has lead his team to 6 straight wins. Yet, everyone is down playing his stats.
I mean come the fcuk on. Some people just want to bring people down when they're on top.
Yes, I know he's young and he turns the ball over. But, come on, he deserves every bit of press he's getting. This kid is changing the game of basketball whether you like it or not.

He lasted less than a month in the D-league before calling it quits for good last month.
The main problem is Amare. He's got to stop taking jumpers, get his ass in the paint and rebound. There is NO excuse for him to average less than 10 rebounds.
You can't have both Amare and Tyson clogging up the paint on offense. Amare is a PF, not a C, and he has a good enough mid-range jumper to often be catching the ball in the high post and pop for a shot or drive to the hoop. That's the only way Chandler and Stat will compliment each other well.

http://www.bakitwhy.com/sites/default/files/users/191/large_Floyd%20Mayweather's%20tweet.jpg
in that case I'll respond the same thing I tweeted back at you....
@FloydMayweather so it has nothing to do with the fact that he's lead a horrible team who couldn't buy a game to 5 straight wins? u idiot
and for the people downplaying his success because he's playing in a PG oriented system, that's true and false at the same time.... true because certain systems are easier to play in, but false because you still have to have the skill present no matter what you're doing on the floor...
as for the turnovers yall forget that even Nash when playing for D'Antoni has always been a high turnover PG as well, but Lin is averaging WAY too many... he needs to chill a little bit and attack when the defense gives him a little something, instead of recklessly trying to push his way almost every time, that alone will cut his turnovers down in half..
Now not bragging or nothing but relevant point is relevant, few years ago I played a summer circuit of pro ball in Europe where I backed up an ex NBA player who played minutes with LeBron in Cleveland... why ? because aside from him they needed someone else who knew how to run an american style pick and roll, so I got the shot... as opposed to majority of Euro ball where they just swing the ball around until there is space to shoot or drive... so the relevance is, sometimes the circumstances are perfect for a player and his specific skillset which works out for that player, I know this from first hand experience but at the end of the day there is no way I could have played unless I was good at the game of basketball overall..... Lin is good at this game, asian white black, don't matter... he's GOOD at the game
