HOw's this game? I'm so tempted but all the bad reviews are kinda making me want to hold off on the game
Personally, I would wait. Maxis/EA are still working shit out. There's a lot of AI issues, too. It's like all that time in development was spent slacking. Not really official, but here's a post about the Traffic AI ("http://answers.ea.com/t5/Miscellaneous-Issues/Traffic-quot-AI-quot-This-is-why-services-and-traffic-are-broken/m-p/737060):
One of the biggest problems people are having with the game is the massive traffic-jams that seem to clog the entire system up. Now, this is responsible for the ineffective coverage of ANY traffic-based services (Fire, Police, Garbage, Medical, Education, Mass-Transit.) There are also a number of smaller complaints that may also be directly related to how Glassbox handles traffic.
"Workers aren't commuting."
"There aren't enough workers, even though I have plenty of population."
"Tourism is broken."
"Emergency services are slow/unresponsive/broken."
The agent system that is used for utilities (power, water, sewage) seems to be identical to the system that handles traffic.
The problem is that, just as power can sometimes take a ridiculously long time to fill the entire map (because the "power agents" just randomly move about with no sense) traffic and workers can do the same thing. Workers leave their homes as "people agents." These agents go to the nearest open job, not caring at all where they worked yesterday. They fill the job, and the next worker goes to the next building and fills that job, and so it goes until all the jobs are "filled." So, when you have all your "worker" sims leaving their houses for work in the morning, they all cluster together like some kind of "tourist pack" until they have all been sucked into "jobs." They don't seem to care if the job is Commercial or Industrial, only that it's a job.
"Scholars" are handled exactly the same way. As are school busses and mass-transit agents. This is why you see the "trains" of busses roaming through your city, and why entire sections of town may never see a school bus, despite having plenty of stops... Once all the busses are full, they return to school and stay there until school is done for the day.
Now, here is where it gets really good... In the evening, when work and school lets out, they all leave and proceed to the absolute closest "open" house. They don't "own" their houses. The "people" you see are actually just mindless agents (much like the utilities agents, as I said earlier) making the whole idea of "being able to follow a 'Sim' through their entire day" utterly POINTLESS!!"
The reason traffic problems cause so many other side-effects, is because EVERYTHING relies on those "people" who are stuck in herds trying to go to whatever closest "slot" they can fill. Casinos go bust because "tourists" are just "shopper agents" from out of town. You MUST put casinos RIGHT next to the entrance to your city if you want them to succeed. Placing street-car stops by the casinos can actually cause more harm than good! Why? Because the "shoppers" will board the streetcar stop (because it's the closest open slot) and be shuttled to a shopping district instead.
Sharing resources and services gets to be a joke, because all the vehicles ("agents") get bound up with the busses at the entrances to cities.
TL;DR: Fixing the way the game handles traffic and "sims" will fix 90% of the problems plaguing players!

The rage continues for Simcity. The main point being the always online requirement. Maxis has stated that the servers are needed for simulation calculations, which is complete and utter bullshit (http://kotaku.com/5990165/my-simcity-city-thrived-offline-for-19-minutes) as evidenced by uninterrupted simulation after a loss of network connection. Now there's corroboration of that fact from an anonymous Simcity developer on Rock Paper Shotgun (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/12/simcity-server-not-necessary/):
In all the fuss and mess of the disastrous SimCity launch, one refrain has been repeated again and again. While legions may be begging for an offline mode, EA representatives have been abundantly clear that this simply isn’t possible. Maxis’ studio head, Lucy Bradshaw, has told both Polygon and Kotaku that they “offload a significant amount of the calculations to our servers”, and that it would take “a significant amount of engineering work from our team to rewrite the game” for single player.
A SimCity developer has got in touch with RPS to tell us that at least the first of these statements is not true. He claimed that the server is not handling calculations for non-social aspects of running the game, and that engineering a single-player mode would require minimal effort.
Our source, who we have verified worked directly on the project but obviously wishes to remain anonymous, has first-hand knowledge of how the game works. He has made it absolutely clear to us that this repeated claim of server-side calculations is at odds with the reality of the project he worked on. Our source explains:
“The servers are not handling any of the computation done to simulate the city you are playing. They are still acting as servers, doing some amount of computation to route messages of various types between both players and cities. As well, they’re doing cloud storage of save games, interfacing with Origin, and all of that. But for the game itself? No, they’re not doing anything. I have no idea why they’re claiming otherwise. It’s possible that Bradshaw misunderstood or was misinformed, but otherwise I’m clueless.”
People were already perplexed by EA’s explanation of the impossibility of offline play. Kotaku ran a series of tests today, seeing how the game could run without an internet connection, finding it was happy for around 20 minutes before it realised it wasn’t syncing to the servers. Something which would surely be impossible were the servers co-running the game itself. Markus “Notch” Persson just tweeted to his million followers that he managed to play offline too, despite EA’s claims. And now with the information from our source, it would seem the claims just don’t hold water.
So what are the servers doing? Well, alongside the obvious, of being involved in allowing players to share the same maps for their cities, and processing imports and exports between them, they’re really there to check that players aren’t cheating or hacking. However, these checks aren’t in real-time – in fact, they might take a few minutes, so couldn’t be directly involved in your game.
“Because of the way Glassbox was designed, simulation data had to go through a different pathway. The game would regularly pass updates to the server, and then the server would stick those messages in a huge queue along with the messages from everyone else playing. The server pulls messages off the queue, farms them out to other servers to be processed and then those servers send you a package of updates back. The amount of time it could take for you to get a server update responding to something you’ve just done in the game could be as long as a few minutes. This is why they disabled Cheetah mode, by the way, to reduce by half the number of updates coming into the queue.”
Clearly an offline game that included a single-player simulation of the region system derived from multiplayer would be more challenging to develop, but our source assured us that it was far from impossible.
So how difficult would it be for EA to create a single-player game that simply did away with the multiplayer-derived aspects and just let us build? It seems that lies somewhere between “easy peasy” and Bradshaw’s claims of “significant engineering”. According to our source:
“It wouldn’t take very much engineering to give you a limited single-player game without all the nifty region stuff.”
EA’s claims about the necessity of online play – claims that more people are seeing for themselves not to be true, just by running the game with the internet cable yanked out – seem inexplicable.
We’d obviously be very interested to hear a proper explanation.

Kinda interesting how deeply some people are taking the analysis of this game already. Good stuff though, shows how much needs to be fixed already.

It was likely just used in typical EA fashion, namely:
1) Spending time integrating new gimmicks
2) Ignoring issues with core gameplay
3) EA's infamous "release knowing the game is faulty and patch and patch and patch and patch and patch and ... until the game is either mostly fixed or no longer profitable" technique.

LOL, I am definitely not buying this game anytime soon. Just reading articles from other sites points out that this game is so buggy that it shouldn't have been released. The AI is severely flawed where it's not functioning the way it's suppose to be; such as, the movement of traffic, and people, which snowballs and contributes to a host of other problems in the city.
I'm gonna give the new Cities XL Platinum a try.

Boo lost my best city due to EA's wonky servers.
I found on flat/non-water layouts the most efficient way is to stretch the entrance avenue straight top to bottom... use the street grid one way and use the avenue grid the other. You end up with a 5 street/3 avenue ratio.

Simcity is being thoroughly examined, and there has been a recent discovery of a debug mode, and there's some tools released for enabling offline play and other options:
Hackers open up offline play, modding tools for SimCity | Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/03/hackers-open-up-offline-play-modding-tools-for-simcity/)
EA and Maxis' claim that it would take "significant engineering work" to make a workable offline version of SimCity took another hit today. Hackers have released modding tools that disable the game's periodic server checks without breaking the simulation. The tools also unlock other features not in the final game.
reddit is abuzz with news and guides for installing the SimCityPak, a downloadable package of files that lets players edit many elements of the UI and underlying game logic. The tools aren't incredibly user-friendly for the time being, but those with some Javascript experience and patience to learn can do things like disable the online connectivity requirement, fix the "fudged" population display, and even affect how the basic simulation works in some ways.
Hackers are still poring through the code to see what kinds of new features and gameplay can be unlocked (including, potentially, the holy grail of increased city size limits), but one of the most exciting discoveries so far has been a way to easily uncover the developers' debug mode. This mode allows for many features that players have been asking for in the consumer version of the game, including the ability to build highways through city limits and in the regional "dead space" between cities. These changes will apparently stay valid in the wider region after the city is synced to EA's central servers, though other users' cities will not see edits made to the regional landscape.
The debug menus also include references to terraforming tools, such as coastline and waterway building, which are currently disabled even in a hacked commercial copy of the game. Options for editing airplane flight paths, creating new docking points for ships, and creating new city and "great works" sites are also alluded to.
Ars was able to download and install a package file enabling this mode in less than a minute. For those who don't want to go through the hacking hassle, this YouTube video quickly shows how the debug mode works in practice. Another video shows a player using edited package files to bulldoze and cause disasters in other players' cities in the region (though the poster claims this was done without server syncing, to prevent any permanent harm from being done).
Last year, SimCity Creative and Art Director Ocean Quigley said the game was being "built to be moddable" at a GDC panel. He reaffirmed that stance in a tweet just last month, indicating modded package files would be allowed (but maybe not directly supported) once the game was released. Given the potential for menace on public servers being quickly unlocked by players, however, this stance may not last.
It's been rather incredible watching the gaming community's reaction to SimCity's launch over the last week and a half, and it's impressive to see that community taking action to try to fix the myriad disappointments in the game as it was released. We can't wait to see what other interesting modifications to the game the community will be able to uncover in the coming weeks and months

There are 35-40 workers working in my high wealth city's recycling centre. But there are only 10 working in my utility town.
I'm guessing the recycling center requires educated and medium wealth workers. which my utility town lacks.
So maybe thats why my recycling center are using recyclables at only 0.7ton a day oppose to burning through 70-90 tons a day in my high wealth city. I was actually making quite a bit of money selling plastic and alloy from my recyclables!
They seriously need to allow us to expand the recycling center to accept more recyclables!

So my city was in a state in which I was making massive amounts of money via trade. I left it for 3.5 hours to play FIFA, came back, and saw that my city was broke, all the buildings were in 'rubble' form (apparently looks like a massive fire happened), and most of my sims left the city. FML, $10 mil cash, 200,000 citizens all gone in 3.5 hours lol

is mining like trading?
do you level up based on "mined" per day or "traded" per day?
for trading i figured out an easy way... just at all your supply/trade depots... make them fill up by clicking "use locally" (cuz there's no use locally, it will just stock pile)
once it is completely full and your rigs are full as well, change it to export.
then you will have A LOT of export and make millions. and you'll level up.
that's for trading anyway. i duno about mining.
Sniperslayer
03-25-2013, 12:23 PM
Ahh yea I think it works the same, as the mining head office your level up is based profits per day I believe so I think that may work
Otherwise I was thinking that you could build two seperate mining operations on the same reserves or if u had two
Seperate reserves I guess

I just build a 600k population city with zero traffic problem, all trash and recycle picked up, zero crime (but there are 10k criminals in the town not committing crime!) zero germs and sickness, zero pollution.
It was all R$ and the whole city is educated using high school only and 5 full green hats. I'm noticing that all my residents will commute via public transport.
There are only a slight amount of traffic at 6am and 6pm where the workers leave town for work and the other half coming back home.
On another city I built with around 80k R$$$ population. People just stop going to school and become uneducated, when I have fully active high schools that are over capacity and school bus coverage thru out town. Also which no traffic problem. The stats are showing that i have around 5 million visitors a day, which seems very weird for a city with only 80k pop!

As if EA couldn’t come off as anymore loathsome, they recently released the first DLC for the new SimCity, making it only available if you get a download code from buying Crest or Oral-B products. You, EA… you can choke on a giant bowl of dicks. Also, that promo image is all fucked up, because SimCity isn’t for PS3 or Xbox. So double fuck you.
The SimCity Attractions Set delivers five tourist attractions, including the Giant Garden Gnome, Dolly the Dinosaur, Llarry the Llama, MaxisMan Statue, and the World’s Largest Ball of Twine. If “SimCity Social” is more your speed, you’ll be happy to know that the digital items are compatible with that game as well. Just keep in mind that EA has announced they’re shutting down the Facebook title as of June 14th.

I don't really have too big of an issue with free DLC, even if it's included in a product partnership deal. They likely had contracts in place for a while with specified timelines of when those DLC products would be made available.
That said, EA shouldn't have made those deals considering their product was a disaster at launch and, apparently, is still a mess.

Basically you get to build churches and it increases your happiness and land value i believe.
So they fixed traffic... if anyone is still interested in playing this.. Good to know. I might pick it up if I see it cheap somewhere. I'm really, really opposed to giving EA money, though. They're already going to get $60 out of me for NHL 14, which I'm only getting to play with my friends.
Actually, it's pretty funny, because if it weren't for EA's complete lack of support for fixing NHL 13, SimCity would've been a day one purchase for me. As a result of their lack of support for NHL 13, I decided not to purchase any other EA games for the rest of the year. Man, am I glad I dodged the bullet on SimCity because the launch was a complete trainwreck from what I read.

Offline mode is here!
A year after troublesome launch, 'SimCity' finally gets an offline mode | The Verge (http://www.theverge.com/2014/3/18/5521838/simcity-offline-mode-released-update-10)
When SimCity came out last March, critics were thrilled with the beloved series' first game in nearly a decade. But no one could praise publisher EA's handling of the launch, which was chronically plagued with server issues that left players stuck with a game they couldn't play. Now, after an entire year, developer Maxis is giving SimCity players what they've been asking for: a way to play the game offline.
Update 10, available today, brings a single player mode to the game. Instead of the always-online multiplayer experience that the title launched with, players will be able to nurture their own cities without worrying about neighbors damaging their metropolis — or troublesome servers meddling with their gameplay.
According to the release notes, you'll still need Origin to use single player. You'll just have to flip the software into offline mode. In addition, it's worth noting that online and single player cities have to be separate — you won't be able to bring your current city offline.

I bought this last year and I barely even played 30 mins of it. They wanted people to stop pirating the game so they made it mandatory to go online which is a fail strategy when their server goes offline so often. I still play sim city 3 sometimes because of that.
