I don't know how many fans of Simcity there are here... but I for one, still play Simcity 4 and cities XL on a daily basis.

New one got announced today - though nothing much was said, what are you guys' thoughts?

Simcity 5 Confirmed: Maxis Taking Social and Environmental Bent to Classic Franchise


The rumors are true: as the internet has been speculating for weeks now, Maxis is in fact building Simcity 5, and it’s due out in 2013.

The game will be worlds different from the Simcity 4000. Maxis Senior VP Lucy Bradshaw wants to make one thing absolutely clear.

“We are adding curvy roads,” she says. “That’s really important.”

There are other changes coming as well. For the first time in the Simcity franchise, the world will no longer be confined to the borders of your own individual city.

“We’re building a simulation that really captures the world that we live in today,” says Bradshaw. “We’re talking about a Simcity where the resources are finite. Where you’re gong to be struggling with some of the same decisions that people are struggling with today.”

Online and social elements where if you put a lot of polluting power plants near your borders, your friends might start to get some smoke rolling into their suburbs. You might even start to contribute to global CO2 levels.

Maxis announced the game as part of the Game Developer’s Conference “Games For Change” track, and it’s planning for the new Simcity to be able to allow players to imagine the world around them in different ways. Speakers at the announcement included Davis Guggenheim, director of “An Inconvenient Truth,” Scott Harrison, President and Founder of Charity;Water and Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter.

For Guggenheim, the stories inherent in games and in documentaries helps people see social problems through new eyes.

“When you play SimCity, you cannot avoid the disconnect. You build a coal-powered plant,” says Guggenheim. “You will feel the consequences in a big way.”

But Simcity isn’t going to become some kind of deadly serious social malady simulator. It’s Maxis.

“You never know when a giant lizard might trundle around the corner and kick some buildings down.”

I remember back in the day spending hours and hours on older sim games like SimCity 2000 and Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 and 2. Sometimes I wonder if newer sim games are just too complicated. Don't get me wrong SimCity 3000 and 4 aren't difficult games but I rather see a more minimalistic approach to a sim game and maybe start adding cool stuff with DLC.

I put soooo much time into Simcity 1. And quite heavy into 2000 and 3000 but they started getting complicated and a little less fun.

I would love to say I want to play the new one, but I don't have the time it takes to put into it, nor the patience to build it, especially with how many layers I expect there to be.

And agreed, it was tough to play without $ cheats. I hated waiting to do anything so Id always run the game on super fast speed, then slow it down to build and deal with problems, then fast again, and on and on.

Nah man that's just a cryengine2 trailer... new Simcity uses Glassbox. No actual gameplay footage has been released yet, but I have a feeling it's gonna lot somewhat like the launch trailer.

As for Cities XL... it's a cheeky alternative at best. It's OKAY, but memory leaks means that with a big city you have to restart the game very 5 minutes

I have both Cities XL 2011 and 2012 ... Can't say I've been impressed by either of them. I logged 108 hours on CXL 2011 ... and 2 hours on CXL 2012 ...

Just to provide a comparison with other city/empire building games:

Tropico 3 - 153 hours
Tropico 4 - 152 hours
Civilization V - 864 hours

It's just SOOOO hard to get into Cities XL ... Like, it doesn't feel like fun at all nor does it give you a sense of accomplishment ... It just feels like work ...

Plus a lot of that comes from Civ LAN parties. Usually a couple times a year, my friends and I get together and pull an all-nighter, so that's like 60 hours right there. And, of course, I usually log a ton of hours prior to the LANs to get prepared :P

Just played the beta a few times, I really can't wait for the final game to come out!

But the beta was so limited, and each section of the region Maps were quite small. I still haven't figured out the best size to have each block of street set. The density of the zones now depends on the size of the roads that are surrounding it. The best I could do is get 36000 population within 1 hr of play time so far.

It's 100% always online required. People have been reporting stuff like disconnects and whatnot with rollbacks.

word of advice, dont have your population expand too quickly. it gets out of control. heard the same thing from a co-worker when he hit the super wealthy population.

he wasnt able to upkeep their requirements and everyone left = town became BROKE


edit: also build dirt roads in the beginning is a good idea. start small and work your way up

so guys i figured out how to kinda cheat if you didn't do any long term planning and your city is starting to get fucked up and unmanageable.

first it requires at least 50-60k citizens... pretty easy.

jack up taxes to 20% on all levels.

fast forward x3.

and get ready to bulldoze. just keep raking in the money, and bulldoze shit as it gets abandoned... you might wanna keep fire services on in case fires start. lol.

slowly as population drops, turn off services, so u can keep raking in money.

when u get bored enough doing this... (i saved up 2million), pause the game, turn off all your services parks and everything, bulldoze everything, dezone everything. but leave the roads and parks and police/ambulance schools whatever nice buildings you have.

now start planning and restart... edit your roads and preplan everything... took me like 2 hours.

we'll see how it goes. i laid down every service building possible spread out properly and all that shit. but turned them off till population requires it. LOL.

ive been trying to build a region landmark for days... i think its been disabled.

for ppl who are having traffic problems at the front entrance.. make a huge highway at the front of it and FORK IT. that helps/helped. you will need to replan the roads in your city.

i demolished half my city and built a highway system encircling the city.. the question is .. is it there when i log in later? or is it gonna get rolledback

I was gonna buy the new Simcity game, but the more I read about it being nothing like Simcity 4. The more I don't want to get it. The solid mod community kept me interested in Simcity 4. Knowing that such community won't exist in Simcity 2013, and that EA will charge the shit out of you with their own mods is keeping me away.

got offered a 25% partial refund for my game.

If you don't have deluxe version I was also offered the deluxe content for free, or sims3 expansion packs which i denied as I don't play sims.

When you're first building, think about where you want your residential, commercial, and industrial areas to be, even their far apart to start with, grow them within their own area

Low-density zoning is best to start with and concentrate primarily on residential and industry (see below) with a few commerical zones. Set this area up as your "rural" area (farmland) and scout a different location to utilize as your city center for later.

Keep maintenance costs down as much as possible, which may mean keeping public services to a minimum until your city is large enough to support them.

Use the cheapest power plant to start (in terms of $/MW), even if it's a heavy polluter, and cut maintenance down. No need for 100% maintenance on a coal plant if you're only operating at 5% capacity.

Mix up low-, medium-, and high-density areas within your zones. Use low-density in rural areas, high-density in urban areas, and medium-density in between. For residential, low-density housing in areas that have high land value can be very useful for attracting high-income sims (who will build mansions and other fancy properties on it) assuming you have high-income jobs for them.

I usually do commercial down the main roads with residential buildings behind them on the backroads. When your city gets larger and more profitable, integrate a subway system beneath the main roads.

Dirty industry (and anything that causes substantial amounts of pollution) should ALWAYS be away from residential areas and clean industry should still be used sparingly within residential areas. Always have a highway going to your industrial zones.

Usually what I do is dezone those areas and then bulldoze everything except parks, police, things that costed money to build since I don't wanna spend money to build those again and then plant down a bunch of trees. Takes a few days or more to clear up the ground pollution. :)
