^Any clue on where hes gone? Or has he just stopped doing these competely?
A couple years back he said it was his last year. He had good prices and made buying from him interesting to watch. I think it was $3 for 1 or $5 for 3.
I just noticed nothing but many many hurricane potato stands all over the place, I remembered seeing around five at the original nightmarket last time I was there.
They're not that great.. are they? I've never been arsed to try because the lines were always abnormally huge
They're alright. It's the novelty of eating one. It's just deep fried potato with seasoning.
These places must bank like no tomorrow. How much is a potato, 20 cents? :nyan:
Same with the roasted corn places..
Did anyone notice that new kernelled corn stand run by brown people? Looks disgusting..
Looks like they just steam frozen corn kernels and then add liquid/powder flavor :heckno:

hurricane potato was very popular when it first came out~ now, it isn't special, but there are still people lining up for them. I would still get it but it wouldn't be the first priority

Also, you can usually talk down the price too. Just let people know. They already making crazy profit. For example, a regular ipod shuffle = 39.99 + tax, if a vendor sells a fake china brand one that looks exactly the same for 15, they are still making $10+ profit. I actually know a place in China that make those for about $3~$5 canadian. Cellphone cases as well, they making $5~$10 profit per

honestly, besides food (and even this is debatable), none of the other stands at the night market were really worth the visit... I could go to ladies market at hk and get the same pieces of junk for 1/1000000000th the price. Yet, people still go and pay for it...
Perhaps this is a profitable opportunity for next year...

What?
Not that I mind the admission fee (it's really a stupid head tax)
+1 to the organizers though they are smart cause they'll easily clear 1MM visitors this year EASY
That's $1 - 1.5MM in incremental cash revenue

How's the quality of jailbait lately at the markets ?
lowered because of two locations :okay:
I've spoken to one of the vendors who's been a part of night market for a few years. The riverrock one is, apparently, charging less for stands than what bridgeport used to charge (bridgeport is charging vendors ridiculously low prices now). The admission fee probably has a lot to do with that.
I've been to both. They were both almost on par. Riverrock was really only good for the novelty of it. Food was expensive (more than birdgeport imo cuz portions are tiny), it was a giant hassle getting there and leaving, nothing particularly special was there, and even though it's only $1.50 I'm not too crazy about the idea of paying a fee just to get in. Went once. Don't feel need to go again. If I go, it'll be the bridgeport one.

It's 50c more, even if you're working minimum wage, I don't see a problem with it. I don't see the problem when parking is free, as well as having a multitude of vendors to browse around, whats there to complain about when its now 1.50c? It's not like they suddenly decided to charge for parking, as well as making the price $5 or something.

To protect yourself, you should hold the skewer positing like when you are brushing your front teeth from the side ways, thus you'll never poke your throat.

I would imagine that given the popularity of the night markets (especially the river rock one), the vendors would be scrutinized for food safety and business permits? Running hot water, proper storage of food, city of Richmond business permits... I haven't been to any this year maybe someone can shed some light onto this

they all have business permits to be allowed to open a booth at the night market.
food safety is necessary for at least one of the people working in the booth, and they have health inspectors to inspect everything before they are allowed to open
they do random checks throughout the weeks to make sure things are still done correctly.
but then since they aren't there daily, there will be lots of corners being cut to meet demands of food and to save on cost

i don't think they can because the sheer volume of people there doesn't always mean success for your booth. i have seen vendors fail before for many different factors

I have a booth at both location and it's a pretty different crowd. Rent works out to the same amount I paid for one at bridgeport last year....xP
Old location has an older crowd in general and way more tourist. New location has mostly younger kids and more Asians because that's where they focus their advertising.
I have to say that the new location is much better organized though....even though the owner is a sketchy snobby douche bag....=\

^ Rumour has it that the Richmond Night Market was forced to close in 2008 because the owner got into personal debt problems as a result of gambling. Completely unsubstantiated of course, but rumours don't come out of nowhere.
I saw the owner myself when I visited the Richmind Night Market. He didn't seem like the nicest guy as he gave some teenage garbage guy crap in public.

Why would anyone agree to pay more for something. If the vendors get charged more on rent, they will just pass on the added costs for the overhead onto the consumer.
Obsideon
06-07-2012, 01:45 PM
Actually $600 per month, being only open 3 days a week so you technically only get 12 business days to work with. You will need to sell at least $50 worth of PROFIT on your merchandise each day to at least break even (that is considering that you are working the stall yourself) or you will have to split the earnings ... you better have a damn good niche market or you won't be making a "killing" per se ... how many toys or gadgets do these stands actually sell? Doesn't everyone just go there for the food anyways? I've personally never bought anything at the NM ... oh once, I did, those cups with the dice inside haha ... but that's 1 purchase in 5+ years of going there...

you think that, but a lot of people do buy merchandise there, it is very niche though
you gotta look at it this way, if these people aren't making money, they wont be back each year, but its pretty much the same people each year getting these booths

06-07-2012, 10:29 PM
the companies running the night markets only deal with the rentals, they don't play much of a factor when it comes to each vendors' personal sales.
they could always ban sales of certain things like copyright materials and create limits if they feel that the market is too saturated with certain items (ie. cell phone accessories limited to only 5 vendors)

then go up to them ask for a new one. If they cheated you out, just report to the Nightmarket's office. After few complaints they probably be ban from having a stand there in the future years

Man I feel bad for the vendors that spent all that money renting the spots.
The nightmarket near homedepot opened a week before the RR nightmarket and it was packed while vendors were doing really well. When RR nightmarket opened, all the attention went to RR location. What can they do, Better location, easy access and more vendors.
Im not sure if RR nightmarket will be forever and years to come, because City of Richmond did purpose to transform that location into some massive shopping hotel centre.
But if RR nightmarket will be there next year, I doubt any vendors want to rent at homedepot nightmarket. Pretty much they will forced to close the year after then thew RR nightmarket founder will then take over that location. When the City of Richmond takes the RR location back for developing the shopping centre
i went to nite market for the first time in 2012 a couple weeks back... to the old location. everything was bumping but i saw something that sorta ruined my night. my friends and i were in this huge lineup for the tornado potaters. I looked around and noticed that next to the potater stand was this small stand which a black guy had opened. he was selling chinese food. you could clearly see the difference on how well the the stand / food was presented, and well... the difference on how many customers each stand pulled. The whole time i was lining up i couldn't help but feel sorry for the guy. he had no customers whatsoever, whereas the tornado potater stand's customers pretty much lined up right infront of his stand, completely blocking his stand out of sight.
i believe it was a bad choice for him to invest in a night market stand selling CHINESE food. not trying to be racist here but do you think the traditional chinese people, or even the westerners would buy CHINESE food from a BLACK guy in a CHINESE night market? i went a couple weeks after to see if he was still there and lo and behold, his stand was gone.. :okay:

Yea I feel bad for those people who rent for a stand, but didn't receive much customers.
In the old night market, there is an Indian stand that sells curry chicken etc.. The curry chicken is probably good, but just not nightmarket type of food.
Also, there is a chicken teriyaki stand where this time, two Chinese guy were selling, yet not one goes. I heard the guy yell, Teriyaki! Teriyaki! Teriyaki! yet no one wants it
People think they can just have a stand, and customers will come to you. Thats not true.

Hi,
I just had a question to anyone that has been to the night market on a Sunday recently. I'm planning on going to the casino for dinner at 7pm and was wondering what the traffic is like around that area heading to the casino parking. I was hoping things have improved but any input would be appreciated. Thanks

back when I worked the nightmarket, there was a clause in the agreement that said you must pay the day's rent if you choose to not open. basically, it's a lose-lose situation. don't open? pay up. show up on shitty weather day? hardly any business and you're stuck outside in the cold rain.

i went tonight also and felt the same way! my tl is lowered only 1.5 inches and i was like damn this is stupid... if i brought my celica(if i still had it) that had about 1 inch of clearance it woulda been rape!
overall though i liked how this new nightmarket had quite a bit of space to walk in, it wasnt super crampped like the bridgeport one. it also had nicer decoration and felt cleaner.

You could park in the lot under the skytrain, but I don't recommend it if you have a lowered car. The surface is like the moon and I raped my front lip/chassis trying to leave the parking lot because of random rocks. But it's right across the night market, so its a quick walk.
Btw, if someone didnt know, you can take River Road there instead of taking Bridgeport or something. Enter River road from No.5 (If you're coming from Vancouver) and just follow it all the way to the casino. I find it A LOT quicker and barely any traffic.

My wife and I went on Friday night. I was thinking about getting some meat-on-a-stick, but then we spotted the pizza truck. They had a stone oven in the truck! Incredible pizza. Recommended. Also got the rice burger. Not $4 awesome, but tasty, nonetheless. Parking was a cinch in the free, gravel lot. My car is a bit lowered, and had no issues.
I think 75% of the non-food stands were cell phone (iPhone) accessories.
