RR won't be affected in a negative way, if anything the night market will attract more people to RR. Very tempting to go play at RR after shopping/eating at the night market...

You know what would be awesome? If they end up getting the food trucks to set up stalls! And they probably will probably draw more mainstream visitors.

I don't work or live downtown so I never have a chance to try any of the food trucks, it would be awesome for them to set up a location at the night market for sad people like me to try their food.

I'm not sure how well the food trucks would do at the Night Market because their prices and cuisine very much appeal to the downtown office crowd. (I.e. Not cheap Asians looking for a deal)

On the few occasions I've been to the Richmond Night Market, the non-Asian food vendors have always had significantly less traffic around their booths compared to the Asian stands which is unfortunate. Then again, when I go to the Night Market, I want my steamed dumplings and meat on sticks.

The night market (the organizers and customers) will benefit from a diversity of foods and stalls. Who really needs 6 stalls selling fake shark fin soup or steamed rice rolls? One or two = ok, 6 = not ok. It'll also bring in some positive press (not the Chinese people only BS we hear about)

A lot of those food vendors often have a food court stall somewhere? Don't see it any different than a food truck-operated stall. If anything, they get more utilization out of their trucks.

The original NightMarket

the RICHMOND NIGHT MARKET will find success depending on how they run the place...simple as that. TOO MANY PROMISES to vendors could ultimately bring them down again

I had a stall last year, and I'll tell you this. I feel like one of them is gonna bomb, and it probably is going to be the one further away from RR. Simply put, there is just not enough people going to these that will keep both of them sustainable. Also, that group treats their vendors like crap.

The RR location has a huge draw being situated near the skytrain. I can see a lot of people going to that one instead based on that alone. Hell I would simply to avoid the parking hell at the summer night market.

I believe the one near River Rock will get a lot of attention, but that being said, knowing there is going to be popular, its going to be very jam packed and crowded which I dislike walking while someone has a hand on your back, pushing you forward. Also family bring their strollers, sometimes you get clipped and Grandmas walking like ants!

I will still visit the one near Home Depot.

Btw anyone know anything about the Downtown Main Street Night Market???

This isn't even advertised on their regular web page; they buried the announcement on their Facebook wall. Sneaky sons-of-bitches.

^nah thats not a chinese thing. theyre making money from vendor stall rent and vendors are making money from us. the $1 is probably because maybe it costs them more to set up atthat location. but theyre setting up there because theyre assumin it will bring in far more revenue. thy shouldnt be passing the $1 risk onto us its straight up greed and thats prolly why its so hidden

There's two hurricane potatoe stand side by side on the very left aisle of food. The side where the shops are facing the seats/tables. I went to the shop on the right. The potatoes weren't done... They were still powdery/not crunchy enough. Sour cream and onion seasoning didn't taste right either. Was craving hurricane potatoes all year and I was pretty dissapointed. They had a slower line too (probably because fewer staff. Cashier did the seasoning and handled cash at the same time) because my friend went to the other shop and left while we were still waiting in line at the shop on the right. So just a headsup revscene.

And on the side note, I'm never going to nightmarket with k3lv/e.lo/cho ever again -____-

None of the food stands looked all that impressive.
There was this Indian guy selling Indian food.
I don't remember if he was around in the past before
But no one was crowding around his place, so I felt bad and bought some food from him.
Didn't look like he was that popular. Butter chicken and veggie samosa. Not bad.

We're already spending money on over-priced street food and night market was free to begin with, I don't get why they're passing the cost down to us. It would have been better and what they SHOULD have done is pass the higher cost of rent down to the stall operators instead of the customers. Different strokes for different folks, it's probably the same shit at both night markets anyways lol rather save $1(or $2 if you're going with the gf) and head to the free one on Bridgeport :fullofwin:

What the... The night market beside River Rock opens on May 18th now requires $1 admission fee??? Lol~

according to Richmond Review - Richmond Night Market returns after a four-year absence (http://www.richmondreview.com/news/151743975.html)

"• Admission: $1; free for children 10 and under and adults 60 and over"

Edit

So its true, they are charging $1 for admission fee

http://www.facebook.com/RichmondNightMarket

Admission $1 but if you are someone who goes a lot

They have 2 type of Zoom Passes, $10 and $20
$10 you get 12 admissions
$20 you get 25 admissions

Passes are transferable.

Purchase @ Pepper Wireless Fido exclusive dealer: Landsdowne Mall, Yohan Centre and Aberdeen Centre.
OR @ Their main office: #3063-8700 McKim Way,

Its Free Parking, well just consider that $1 toward parking fee, while the one at Home Depot Nightmarket costs $5 for parking

Think of it this way, you go night market with a group of friends ei; let's say 4 people. That's 4 bucks. At bridgeport location, parking is 5 bucks but you don't pay admission. Or technically free if you park far away. Either way, you're paying for stupid fees.

It was clever scheme by them

Technically, the parking wasn't free. The admission fee goes toward it. People who go is pretty much paying for other people's parking fee. Doesn't matter if you walked all the way from North Vancouver or Skytrain there. You pay to help other people park. Or even toward to pay for the renting fee of the location to City of Richmond

Thinking about how many people are still going to go since $1 isn't that much, but if they were to collect $1 from X amount of people, they will be making a lot more than what Home Depot Night market make for $5 per parking spot and give admission free.

The night market at river rock is hyped, new, better location with sky train access, advertise as "Free Parking", also the Zoom Pass has advertisement of Fido, they make even more money.

The line isn't as bad as it looks...took me maybe 5 minutes from the parking lot.

But the fucking stupid part was...they charge $1 but DO NOT TAKE $20 bills. What the fuck? I can understand the $50 and $100 but $20?! That's bullshit.

Plus it is absolutely retarded to charge admission rather than parking. It just creates a choke point and a line. The other NM never has a line. And there needs to be a "YOU MUST BE ABLE TO PARK FUCKING PROPERLY" requirement. As 90% of Asians to park in a standard sized space in 10 seconds or else their family will explode and just about all of them with fail horribly. That's why there's a lineup of cars all the way to Canadian Tire.

lineups: 10-20 mins to get into the free parking lots, 5-10 to get into the nightmarket, long ass lineups for food (waited 30 mins for 'The Squid Co', 30 mins for waffle balls), ~20 mins to get out of the parking lot, luckily I was parked in the second parking lot which was less than 5 mins to get out.

if they have to pass the cost on, i wish they would just pass the cost onto the vendors and the vendors pass the cost on to us. that way, sure we'd pay a bit more for the already overpriced food, but with no line. if you buy several items of different food a day i don't see the extra cost if they were to do it that way being more than $2 total for the whole night on all your food spend. $2 with no line is better than $1 with a buttfuck line that doesn't take 20's, to me at least

Ronin

LONG lines for food. Any of the good food. The only place with a reasonable lineup was one of the grill places near the front. About 10 people in front. Any others there were 30-40 people ahead so I didn't bother. Dead everywhere else as usual. There's a cupcake stand out there that looks pretty successful. Not in the food area.

If you want to avoid parking in that area, park on the other side of the bridge near the Westin. 5 minute walk to the entrance if you jaywalk across the two one-way streets that go to/get off the bridge to the airport. A bit dusty and not actually roads...just loose gravel. Not recommended for the ladies in heels but otherwise saves you the hassle of the 30 minute traffic jam into the parking lot.

I thought the opposite. Lots more choices in food and I think the prices are better as well. I saw several stands with $2 skewers. $3.50 for drinks. That seems lower than the other place but I could be wrong. There were some things that were hilariously overpriced like the $9 bratwurst hotdog and $7 for a tiny lamb chop. The "Rotato" was $3.50 I think. Or whatever place is doing those spiral potatoes. Somewhere is $3.50.

Also seems cleaner. But that will change in a couple weeks, I suppose.

instantneedles

Took transit there, and was glad I did. Huge lineups for everything since it was opening day, and only the stalls with big lineups sold the better foods. I went to River Rock Richmond Night Market on Friday and it was packed. Tons of stuff to see, but the $1 fee kind of sucks. Probably really easy to sneak through with a crowd if you're incredibly short. Parking is a bitch, we parked by some marina far away and had to walk through the dark to get back to the car. Should have probably bought a sword, you know for my own personal security. :D

Went to Chinatown night market last night. Not what it used to be. I really miss the good old days when it was the best night market, before all the other ones came around. Bought some fish balls, too salty.

Tonight I think we'll check out the Summer Night Market @ Richmond to see how that one changed after the River Rock one probably stole a lot of it's vendors.

Fee only if you park RIGHT inside their own designated blue fence lot. Not worth it unless you want to deal with waiting forever to get in, paying, then waiting forever to get out. Park a whiles away and take a walk. Use your best judgement on where is a good place to park and where isn't. There are tow trucks roaming around, but there are also some good hidden spots which are fine to park in.

Also, you will save yourself a good deal of time if you avoid driving right by the night market on river road. Try to stay at least a couple blocks away to avoid half assed traffic guards and tons of cars.

i parked around Costco also and walked over. The walk is awesome because it builds up the appetite on the way and burns off the food after. =)

i used to think that going near closing is awesome because of the deals but the diffrence between a freshly cooked skewer (or anything else) more than makes up for the extra cost.

it was so busy but that is to be expected right? the only downside was mainland older couple that was talking so annoyingly loud behind us and kept pushing up against us.

Friend told me he saw a place that does sausages in a similar way...called the "Sausage Tornado". I don't know about you but sausage tornado sounds fucking awesome.

...or a really wacky alternative to the phrase "sausage party".

its just a sausage surrounded by potato lol

I just had one today. I got the regular potato with bbq seasoning, I thought it was too sweet. But for the price it's alright. My gf got one too so it was 2 for $5.

Went to the RR tonight. Waited from 930 to 1015 starting at Costco.

Rotato is that great? There were at least 100 ppl in the order line.
$8 for the walking balloon dog is awesome. Just not $8 though.
Squid co. Had a good size line uo but $6 too expensive for boiled then grilled squid.
Seafood place with $6 half lobster is insane. Cost is $7.88 each at T&T.

First row facing the merchandise section, opposite side of Rotato.

It's the only place called Seafood something(?). They also serve grilled abalone for $5. Don't know if real or fake. Anyways the lobster is real for sure cuz i saw it on the grille.

Defintely not Casino, they will observe the parking lot. People said park at Costco, its about 5~10 minute walk so it is not bad. Otherwise, you can park at lansdowne the Skytrain. Park near No9 Restaurant as it is open 24/7 thus, the lansdowne patrol won't suspect much

Last time I went there was a Casino Security Guard posted at one of the Staircase Exits.

And there's a bunch of traffic at coming out of the Casino Parking lot, you have to merge onto River Road where everybodys squeezing to get into the Night Market.

I parked a little down the street where River Road turns into River Drive, and walked there. A little longer walk but a whole lot faster.

There's an sign at the Park n Ride which says something about no "night market parking"

I don't exactly know why. Maybe if everybody parks there, there no RR parking for their customers?

At the same time, how to they track all the different people who park there? I park my car there every Monday to Friday morning and jump on the skytrain, and come back around 630 pm..

I think they don't give a fuck as long as you pay, after all the spot is yours for 24 hours. You can do whatever you want during that time with your body LOL.

I saw some guy there checking with a palm computer, saw a ticket once too.

I visited the Richmond Night Market on Friday night and overall, I wasn't terribly impressed. The merchandise stands are a joke and I couldn't believe the line-up for that Rotato stand. Sure, there were a lot of food stands, but none of them seemed to offer anything that exciting. I had some Takoyaki that was all batter and of course some bubble tea whose powder wasn't fully dissolved. The dim sum I had was of course mediocre.

There were a couple of solo performers (Caucasian) who played to an audience of no one. I felt pretty sorry for them and I'm sure they could do better busking on Granville Street.

In hindsight, the hype around night markets died shortly after 9/11 when merchants stopped selling fake designer goods.

Grandmaster TSE
05-27-2012, 12:13 AM
its not the vendors fault for not selling fake designer goods anymore

there is a strict regulation on goods sold from the designers themselves to get rid of knockoffs in all markets, so vendors are limited overall of what they can or can not sell

Finally got the chance to check out the river rock RNM sponsored by fido friday night. Across the river rock casino parking tower is a gravel lot ( next to commercial shops) that are free but huge potholes where I saw a b-class MB kept hItting all bumps and lumps lol... All you hear is thump thump boom... Poor underbody. Then theres the official parking lot next to night market, paved and smooth roads but you'll need to get through the traffic workers which takes longer. Staff at admission said its free parking but dont forget $1 admission fee.

Bigger venue so more room to walk around, long lineups for hurricane potatoes couldnt believe how ppl kept in order, lotsa shops selling phone case accessories, girl makeups, and dvds.
Had a nice stage for music singers, lotsa different food varieties, and too many lbs and lgs running
around.

Ended up staying less than an hour and bought a phone case for my dad.

I know many ppl say to park at river rock tower but I saw many casino workers checking out cars and
few management types lurking over to market for food hahah...

Went to the Richmond Nightmarket @ RR, way over hyped, took forever to get from Cambie & Bridgeport to Costco. Food was pretty bad...Takoyaki, all batter. Bubble tea, ran out of bubbles and the drink had powder that wasn't dissolved yet, skewers were bland and bubble waffles were soggy and clumped together..

Probably not worth it, might head to Bridgeport location though, seems like they have the same stalls(at least I think they do?) and less line up! AFAIK food was better there last year :)

Saw a older model C-class blocking the middle lane cause it ran out of gas and one of his friends bought a Jerry can over and tried to fill the car up, more than half of the gas spilled all over the ground.. So much fail.. LOL

I was walking around bridgeport location with a XL turkey leg in one hand, and the corn on the cob in the other hand. Best $11 combo. Also had a plate of butter chicken which was pretty good. I went to the RR location last week and won't return because of the dirty gravel parking which made my car very dirty and scrape a lot.

Went today. Traffic was hectic around there. But I found free parking in the lot cause I was lucky.

The place is way too packed though in the food area. It was so bad, I felt like I was on the Canada Line during peak hours.
It's worst than the Bridgeport one. The other stands were more or less the same as what they offer in Bridgeport.
So you just have more of the same stuff.

The only thing I liked was how the fake shark fin soup was a bit cheaper at $5...
But not really a big deal. I won't be going back to the RR one again though, just because of how busy it is.

Went to the RR one tonight again for the Rotato. Not impressed.

Last year it was $3 for 1 or $5 for 2. Last year they also used golden potatoes and hand carved it on a stick.

The Rotato is a joke. DYI drill that cuts the potatoes. Cheap brown skinned potatoes that cost 10 cents a piece. Sold at $4 each. Super long line (but moved fast).

As for parking, RR casino should consider charging $40 for parking entry like Edgewater. The casino can then exchange the parking fee as playing chips. That will drive away all the parking cheaters. I also hate the line up and gravel lot. Tonight I went to the RR customer parkade, went into the casino to take a piss, exit then walk over to the night market. :fuckyea:

Don't get me wrong: I'm not blaming the vendors for not selling fakes. I actually feel sorry for the merchandise vendors because what can they really sell that will draw people in? You can only have so many stands selling cell phone cases before the market gets saturated.

RR night market has the worst traffic mgmt system. the flaggers are LB's probably without a drivers license. I was the last car in a line up of about 8-10 last night, and the guy instead of letting me go, decides to hold me for a good 10mins. There are cars flowing out from all different directions. There is no set entry way to funnel in foot traffic. people have to cut through flowing traffic to get to the admissions gates. They have a guy on a boom lift right in the middle of the gravel parkade to spot. Not sure what exactly he's spotting.. I'm sure a bunch of tree monkeys and pylon cones and do a better job!! Also talk about the lack of signage. Had to keep asking flaggers - which way was for parking.

RS admins should consider getting the RS traffic crew and contracting them out.

Finally, LG's were non-existent.

As for stuff to buy, there wasnt anything that you couldnt get off eBay for 20% of the prices listed there. Selection was awful too, most of the GSII cases were just sparkly jewel girly ones.
