That's right! Hermannator's back in about a month! :drunk:
Reports are Hermannator has been delivered to government warehouse... So should be in stores soon... Can't wait to taste that sweet malty goodness :sweetjesus:
Hey guys, which Hermannator in particular? Care to share which variants are best?:concentrate:
MindBomber

Hermannator is the name of a beer produced by Vancouver Island Brewery, and therefore there are no variants. It is available in 6 packs for around $14 between late October and approximately February. It is, as of today, not on the shelves at government liquor stores.
It is a German eisbock, which is produced by brewing a dopplebock and partially freezing it to allow water to be removed. The resulting strengthening of the concentration increases the alcohol level to between 9-15% and also the flavour level. The flavours to expect are chocolate, coffee, and caramel malts with a bit of fruitiness.

It depends on the style of beer you prefer.
Tree Brewing's Vertical Winter Ale is an good seasonal release. The dominant flavour is vanilla but there's some malt and spice in the back.

Thanks for both of these recommendations MindBomber. I really loved the vertical winter ale, such a good and easy drinking brew. That vanilla after taste is amazing. The hermannator is definitely an aquired taste. For those that aren't used to drinking high alcohol content beers, you may not like it. I personally think it tastes great considering it's very high alcohol content.

Ha, I attempted to cellar it and caved. Barley Mowat cellars it and regularly compares it against earlier editions and itself as it advances in age, though it's possible you're aware of that already. From his blog:
Vancouver Island Hermannator 2012
Cellared October 2012
Sampled March 2014 — Next sample ~Spring 2014
Bottles left: 15 (33cl + 1 65cl)
Now: 8/10 — Potential: 9/10
Notes: Big beauty of a malt-heavy beer. That last bottle was smoothly amazing, but needs a bit more time for the deeper complexity to reassert itself.
Vancouver Island Hermannator 2013
Cellared October 2013
Sampled December 2013 — Next sample Summer 2014
Bottles left: 6
Now: 6/10 — Potential: 8/10
Notes: More malt-forward than the 2013. Time will tell how it ages compared to the 2012.

You're welcome! Another beer for you to try would be Driftwood's Blackstone Porter. It is another great annual release with an emphasis on roasted malt, chocolate, a bit of coffee, at bitterness and the end. It is wonderfully creamy, and a reasonable 6% ABV (or at least is was last year) so you won't be completely drunk by the end of the bomber.

Tried a GIB winter ale last night at their tasting room
Kinda fell off for me, I don't know if they don't serve it cold enough or what but it wasn't very enjoyable. For the last few years Jimmy macs in port kells have been serving the best winter ale I've found and it's always consistent. I dunno if it's the temp they serve it at or the CO2 mix etc
Definately though the vertical winter ale is far better

Got my case of the Hermannator finally!
Initial thoughts: it began with light notes of coffee and brown sugar.
The flavour is heavy and really packs a punch, a whiff of bitterness. Don't know how to describe it, but I find the beer a bit thick to the palate.
As shown, I drank the beer in a snifter/balloon glass, it helps with getting the aromas to the nose. Note, I had the beer refrigerated and pulled it out, let it sit for 5 min before opening it. It really helps to taste the flavours as its not in a ice cold state.
Again, after polishing off a whole bottle, you get a strong scent of sticky brown sugar. The bitterness lingers a bit on the tongue. :concentrate::concentrate:

picked up a couple cases of Hermanators this weekend, drank 1 case and put one away to cellar
I drank a couple of the hermanators at room temp because i brought them to a party and obviously werent cold from the liquor store. I'd say they are almost more enjoyable at room temp or slightly chilled than very cold. I find they are almost overpowering when super chilled like you're drinking whiskey but at room temp it's far more mild, and i found it quite enjoyable
also opened a Sartori tonight i had sitting in the fridge, man the fruit notes exploded out of the bottle, i was like wtf.. is that the beer? it smelled wayyy stronger than before, was also super enjoyable but definately not as crisp as when i bought them.
Still have 3 more to go

Nelson Brewing Company's Faceplant Winter Ale is not bad.
Nelson's style is British so don't expect a beer like Tree or GIB's style because they're very American in their use of spice. It is malty with a rich, molasses or brown sugar like sweetness that is balanced with slightly high ABV (6%) and carbonation levels. It's not incredible, but definitely a well-balanced, well-crafted beer that is easily session able. I like this brewery.

Just cracked my first bottle of Nectarous.
Surprising upon first taste, but very good. A far lighter than I anticipated. Was expecting more syrupy, but this was very dry. It's like biting into a fresh juicy ripe peach; amazing that the flavours are all a result from the yeast and organisms.
Carbonation is amazing, practically champagne-like.
I've been hoping for local brewers to create more sours, and this one really hits the nail on the head.

ended up trying this $55 Dues
Very interesting.. 3 of the 4 of us are big beer guys and only 1 of us really "liked" it, i can appreciate it as it has a definate refined taste but with massive depth. the fermentation process involves both hops and barley as well as sugars involved in meads etc. it has super minor hops with big tongue and nose, sweet almost to a tartness

Yeah the Rickards Shandy was really good. Not too sweet or overly lemony, it's just the perfect amount.
Don't bother with the shock top shandy. It's way too sweet and tastes more like lemonade then a beer.

Speaking of beers... anyone going to Craft Beer Week (http://www.vancouvercraftbeerweek.com/)?
IGNATURE VANCOUVER CRAFT BEER WEEK FESTIVAL: SUNDAY
SUNDAY JUNE 7 1:00PM / 2:00PM - 6:00PM
34.99 - 39.99
Vancouver Craft Beer Week’s Festival is now the biggest craft beer festival in Canada, with over 100 breweries and up to 400 beers to sample!
We’re excited to announce our festival’s new home – the fabulous Fair Grounds at the Pacific National Exhibition, where we will be hosting the Stihl Timbersports Western Canada Finals this year, with competitions happening on both days – Rookies, Women’s and Men’s Professionals, with DJs Hebegebe & K-Tel spinning sweet summer soul to open and close the festival.
General Admission tickets get you entry to the festival, entertainment, and a souvenir tasting glass, while Gate Crasher tickets get you all that and into the festival an hour early. Once inside tokens are only $1.25 each!
It's like $34.99 for admission and then $1.25 for "beer tokens" that you can redeem at over 400 craft beer stalls in the PNE fair.
IMO the admission price is kinda steep but if got nothing better to do on Sunday afternoon...

I bought a bottle the other day because I was really curious. I would say the beer is more like a Pacific Schwarzbock (http://www.pwbrewing.net/ourbeer/pacific-schwarzbock/) due to the higher alcohol content, taste, and foam color.
For the money, I'd rather experiment by mixing stout with sriracha. $15 gets a lot more beer than one bottle of this stuff.

The Nose is always crazy but this year it's even more impressive, tones of different notes coming through. However, I find the after taste/back of the tongue to be almost over powering. Very dark chocolate/nutty almost peanut butter/burnt flavours
Also has a lot less citrus on the initial taste. Don't know if I'm a fan. Will have to drink a few more see how it goes.
I also found the bottle I drank last night to taste slightly "skunky" almost like the bottles I held onto for a few weeks on last years release

I've never been able to find them at BC liqour store. Tried my first 2016 sartori last night and I don't think this batch is as good as the previous years.

Bump!
Christmas season is coming. I’m looking for a specific Stella Artois I enjoyed drinking last year. 750mL bottle, corked like champagne. I haven’t been able to find it yet, suggestions?

It's winter beer time! I'm a big fan of the Whistler Brewing Dunkel (http://www.whistlerbeer.com/beers/winter-dunkel-2/) - delicious and reminds me of a Terry's Chocolate Orange. Picked up some Deschutes Jubelale (https://www.deschutesbrewery.com/beer/jubelale/) down in Seattle this weekend, looking forward to trying it.

I have some hermantors cellared, some from 2 years ago some from 5, they get pretty interesting as initially they taste like straight whiskey where over time the alcohol seems to become subdued and more chocolate/caramel come out. Good winter beers as well

Is the Hermannator available in stores right now?
Hoyne Pilsner is my current go-to

Yea seems like the hype has died down. Last years Sartori was one of the best IPA’s I’ve maybe ever had, this years though was just skunked out, didn’t even finish the couple bottles I had

Not yet I believe but should be shortly

If you like IPAS that are a bit higher percentage (9.2%), i recommend trying the parallel 49 toques of hazard double white IPA. It only comes in single tall cans but is quite smooth for a higher percentage. A few of those and youll be feeling great

So a few years my local had 750mL stella Artois bottles and I loved them. A nice cork etc, it just felt good to drink in the winter. Haven’t seen them for 3-4 years though.
Are there any websites that I can order online? Or maybe a store that’s willing to bring some in? But not multiple cases. Any help I’d appreciated.

I haven’t bought beer in a long time but figured I kinda had to have a beer during the Canadian anthem for the team’s first game at the World Cup so I hit the store and found Four Winds Featherweight IPA. It’s a nice light IPA. Do recommend.

Twin sails does not hit like it used to. Dat juice got way weaker once they put out juice plus. They barely ever do the stiff peaks anymore either, which were always the best. Nothing can touch superflux these days. It's banger after banger from them.

I like trying the experimental that they do whenever I go. It’s always a bit different. Colour and shape is classic. Easy tiger tastes like a big hazy ipa but only is 4% which is sweet cause no accidental blackouts. I just wish they did better food.

Storm Brewing is AWESOME. Legit weird and different tasting beers, I was very impressed with them. Tasting room sucks though, that's the only thing, pretty small in terms of seating.
We're checking Brassneck out tonight, of all the years they've been around I've never checked them.
The Bakery was one of my top breweries as well, but they were bought out.
The replacement is easily one of the most disingenuous examples of marketing a brewery I've ever seen. "Brave Brewing":
https://www.brave.beer/
The website makes this new spot not even look like a damn brewery but rather some weird social-conscious construct of a lifestyle brand. Very odd. Just take a few mins to watch the splash video on this website :lol

My neighbour is best friends with the owner of storm, great guy. She often has parties and bbqs and he provides the beer.
What I like about storm is all their experimental stuff actually tastes like what it’s trying to taste like because they render down the actual ingredients as opposed to some Bs chemical mixture, their staple beers are also pretty solid.

Beere is good for that too. My favourite beer ever that they released (fingerpaint) I was talking to the brewer about and he said it might be a while before he does it again because he spent 3 days zesting clementines haha. I told him I’ll come in and do it for a supply.

Agree about Superflux IPAs mostly tasting the same but they are all good so no complaints. Beere is great as well. Backcountry makes good beer but BCL only seems to carry Widowmaker and Trailbreaker. Most IPAs are "hazy" these days so I find myself going back to Fat Tug or Yellow Dog Play Dead when I'm looking for a proven west coast ipa.

"It has to come out like a good hot beer shit. A good hot beer shit is glorious, man. You get up, turn around, look at it and you're proud. The fumes, the stink of the turd, you look, you say, 'God, I did it. I'm good.' Then you flush it away and there is a sense of sadness when just the water is there. It's like writing a good poem, you just do it. You-it's a beer shit. There's nothing to analyze, nothing to say, it's just done. Got it?"
