Review and discuss your favourite beers and breweries.

My beer preference varies widely by season and mood. Partially that's fueled by the fact that beer, unlike most other beverages, varies widely in taste based to the average pallet. Although I do enjoy wine, my pallet is definitely not refined enough to actually detect it's subtleties.

I'll write a proper review later, but to start I'll post Vancouver Island Brewery's tasting notes on Skyhopper Honey Brown, a favourite my fridge is often stocked with.

Like you said, it all depends on the time, place, mood, etc.. Which, I think is how it goes for most people.

Usually with, say dinner, I like to have a more tasty ale. I always like trying new random breweries, but my "default" is usually something from Granville Island Brewery.

If I'm just hanging out with some people on a hot summer day, it's usually chilled Corona.

Sticking with mostly local/canadian selections here...

My go-to if the bar has it on tap is the Surrey Central Red Racer India Pale Ale. I find the bittersweetness of IPA's refreshing but also with that big depth of flavour that you can slowly savour. Best of both worlds. If only we could get more readily access to Dogfish Head beers here I'd be in heaven.

For lagers, Czechvar (not local), OK Springs 1516, Sleeman 1516.

Wheat ales; Red Racer White Ale, Grasshopper, St. Ambroise Apricot Wheat Ale, R&B Sun God (Mt. Pleasant!)

Ales; Tree Brewing Thirsty Beaver Ale (cheap but tasty!), Rogue Dead Guy Ale (from Portland, but expensive!), anything from Unibroue (La Fin Du Monde, Maudite, etc.), Driftwood Farmhand, R&B Raven Crea,

IPA: Red Racer, Fat Tug, R&B Hobgoblin

Stout: Backhand of God, Guinness, R&B Dark Star, St Ambroise Oatmeal.

Breweries in general: Dogfish Head (American), R&B (Vancouver), Central City (Surrey), Unibroue (Quebec), St. Ambroise (Quebec), Big Rock Brewery (Calgary), Rogue (Portland), Driftwood (Victoria)... And all the monasteries in Belgium that do trappist ales.

Thats all I can think of for now...

Anything Central City Brews is excellent in my experience.

St. Ambroise Apricot Wheat Ale is my Bro's favourite beer; I enjoy it with a light meal on a summer day, but don't love it overall. I find the apricot flavour too dominant and slightly artificial, if the beer flavours were a little less subtle it would be greatly improved.

A bit off topic, but has anyone taken a course on beer? I drink the stuff, but I don't know as much as I would like to.

I'll just list a bunch of random beers that I have enjoyed in the past: Chimey Blue, Piraat, Gulden Draak, Tripel Karmeliet, Hoegaarden

Too many more that I can't remember! I usually take a picture of the bottle when I try something new.

Although there's definitely some beers I prefer not to drink such as your typical Canadian, Kokanee, Budweiser etc I will drink them if it's my only options. Overall I'm not one of those super picky guys though.

In terms of just my every day option I usually stick with Sleemans Honey Brown.

My pallet is very much the same when it comes to drinking wine and stuff though. Although I love wine I just don't have the right pallet to recognize all those things other people do. Maybe it's all the years of smoking I don't know.

Simply smooth and great tasting for myself personally.

I ain't an expert but I do enjoy my beers. Bud, corona and all those shit beer were great when I was a kid but now, I really do appreciate the good old IPA. TONS of flavor and I don't mind it at all. I also enjoy the Wheat ales.

Sorry, stella and becks and all those other beers.. i much rather grab a granville island anytime (I will never turn down Granville island Winter ale and my awesome gf got me Chocolate Granville Island limited edition) That was just pure awesomeness.

Then again GUiness is great once in a blue moon.

Have you had Unibroue Ephemere and Ephemere Cassis? Soooo tasty. On the nose you get a huge hit of fresh Granny Smith Apple (or Black Currant for the Cassis), but when you drink it you only get a hint of the fruit essence but without the sweetness, so it's super refreshing and drinkable.

Flying Beaver had Ephemere Cassis on tap last summer. Regular Ephemere you can get in liquor stores.

Winter Ale is a very good beginner craft beer. A bit overpowering with the Vanilla, but definitely a good starter to get people more into stronger tasting beer; at least that's kind of how it was for me. I've tried the GI Chocolate and remembered it was quite good. Their limited edition beers are very good in general, I find. Had this a few weeks ago:

There are far too many delicious beers that I enjoy for me to list (Keith's White Ale, Guiness, Bud Light Lime, Granville Island Maple, Grasshopper Wheat Ale, Cobra India Ale, Hoegaarden, Asahi, Stella, etc) it's easier for me to list beers that I do NOT like to drink:

1) Coors Light - I would rather just drink water or nothing at all then consume this piss-like conconction of what they label a beer!
2) Pacific Pilsner - Did a beer marathon at the Rugby House (RIP) where they had like 8-12 different beers on top, we had a pint of every glass from the bottom of the menu, until we got to this beer at the top (also the cheapest) and we figure ... oh snap why not, we're pretty buzzed already and had a dozen other beers before this, how bad could it be?... oh FML it was still gross lol!
3) Old Stock Ale - Friend brought it to a party, never again will I drink this.
4) Budweiser - I can handle if it's the only thing available (got used to it at Rogers Arena) but I definitely wouldn't order it if I had any other choice.

My basic run of the mill staple would be Kokanee though.

I've had Granville Island Beers: Brockton Ipa, Pale and Winter Ale and Island Lager, Honey Cypress
The GIB Raspberry beer is sweet, if you like that kind of thing would do you good for this hot weather.

But to compare it to Bowen Island beers: Ipa, ale, and lager, there's more of a cripser taste in the bowen island beers, though thats imo.

As for the good beer, Chimay is always a soother on a nice hot day. A bit pricey but worth it knowing where it came from.

And if your in the mood to try some good, fruity beers or just any beers, should check out: St. Augustines, Commercial and 7th, they've basically got their own brewery, tonnes of beers and when you go to the washroom (men), theres a tv that tells you how much beer is left for each type whether its the stout, ipa, ale, good pub food too

I tried Big Rock Rye & Ginger recently.

My overall impression of the beer was good, but definitely not great. I'm not sure if I'll purchase it again, but I'm leaning slightly towards not.

Some notes on it..
-It has a nice moderate carbonation, and leaves a slight tingle on the lip.
-A very nice malty taste, I think this would be my favourite characteristic of the beer.
-The ginger taste is very subtle, but present. I didn't find myself having to search for the taste. I would have preferred a bit more ginger flavour.
-Slightly more present than the ginger is a lemon citrus flavour, which worked well but I would have liked a bit less of it.

Worth trying if you're a curious beer nerd.

That Imperial Ale is TERRIFIC. Did you grab that from central city? I had no idea its in stock. That is the best IPA in the North West in my books.

The regular IPA on draught is good as well but the imperial is more balanced.
I find too many IPAs place too much of an emphsis on being way too hoppy.

Canned/bottled Guinness has a number of additives not used when it's kegged, it definitely makes a significant difference in flavour. Fun fact, Guinness is not vegan/vegetarian friendly when canned/bottled, but it is when kegged (I know this matters to no one on rs but me :)).

The BCLS in Langley has started carrying more single tallboys. There's around a dozen different ones. Domestic and Imports. There's a few for under $2, but most are under $2.50. Grolsh tallboys have been on sale for 2.10, recently. I like Grolsh!

Sorry, I guess my post was misleading. Did you buy the Granville Island Brewery bottled ones?

I ain't an expert but I do enjoy my beers. Bud, corona and all those shit beer were great when I was a kid but now, I really do appreciate the good old IPA. TONS of flavor and I don't mind it at all. I also enjoy the Wheat ales.

Sorry, stella and becks and all those other beers.. i much rather grab a granville island anytime (I will never turn down Granville island Winter ale and my awesome gf got me Chocolate Granville Island limited edition) That was just pure awesomeness.

Then again Guiness is great once in a blue moon.

You should try the Philips Longboat Chocolate porter if you liked the Granville island version.

Vancouver Island Brewery - Hermann's

5.5% AlC./VOL.

Named after one of the original Brewmasters at VIB, a Bavarian, it's meant to be a local take on a traditional German recipe.

Rating:4.25/5

Appearance: Exceptionally dark with a small tan head and moderate lacing; visually very appealing.

Smell: Overall quite subtle. Dominated by roasted malts reminiscent of coffee, but also with a noticeable undertone of flowery sweetness, under close study the roast itself comes through with the smell of charcoal or an extinguished campfire.

Taste: Very flavourful. Opens with strong but not overpowering roasted malts, tasting very much like dark roasted coffee. A chocolate-toffee sweetness comes through nicely complimenting the malt.

Mouth Feel: Feels like a fizzy pop.

Note: I would definitely recommend picking up a 6 pack to have a taste of this beer, it really is an outstanding local take on a dark lager. Do not pick up the mixer pack that most liquor stores carry, VIB has a few recipes and they are definitely hit and miss, I found at least one of the beers in the mixer pack terrible. I'll review it soon.

No, I've never taken a beer tasting course. Although, there is a company which offers beer tasting classes locally called Just Here For The Beer.

Most of what I've learned about tasting and reviewing beer has been through reading blogs and mimicking the overall style, the aspects they focus on, and other such details. Of the local beer blogs, lovegoodbeer.com is my personal favourite. If you go to beeradvocate.com/beer/101/taste, you'll find a good little tutorial on 'proper beer tasting, a few other interesting articles, and concise reviews on many thousands of different beers.

I've learned to love and appreciate so many little details in good beer over time, when before it was just the general flavour that drew me to micro-brews.

the "Herman's" are not the same as the "Herminator" they sell, which is a seaonal beer i believe, the Herminator is a strong boc, 8% i think, and i actually preferred it much over the "herman" which tasted very meh to me

as for the apricot beer, could it have been this "Cheapeau" ?

if so, usually i'm not a fan of fruit flavoured beers, but this one was VERY nice, i was super impressed, imo it was almost more of a cider, but absolutely refreshing and tasy

The Grimbergen next to it was also freakin awsome, suprinsgly the servers who work at Biercraft are very knowledgeable regarding their menu, and i described what i liked in a beer and what i was looking for that night, and he nailed it with the Grimbergen, although i think it's a fairly common beer

their taster's are also pretty good, i just let the server pick them for me, but you can taste any 4 they have on tap:

Interesting, might need to check this one out.

Switchback IPA (Lighthouse Brewing Company, 6.5%)

This is the first in a series of reviews on the new wave of B.C. IPAs. This province already produces some of the best India Pale Ales in Canada and arguably North America – I’m looking at you, Red Racer and Fat Tug – but that doesn’t deter craft brewers releasing new takes on the style into an increasingly crowded marketplace.

Lighthouse already had an IPA in its range when head brewer Dean McLeod was challenged to make a bolder, more distinctive West Coast-style brew.

The New Zealander had previously tinkered with hops from his native land and now decided to add their flavours and aromas to a staggering bill of 14 different hop strains in what was to become the Switchback IPA .

(McLeod explained the effort that goes into making this beer as part of my Labeer of Love series.)

All the hard work was clearly worth it, because this is one of the most distinctive B.C. IPAs on the market right now. And the market is loving it, considering how quickly supplies dwindled when it was released this spring.

A bold, clear, slightly reddish copper colour with a robust, long-lasting white head, Switchback looks great in a glass.

But the journey really starts with the nose. Immediately snappy and biscuity, it suddenly blooms into a basket of tropical fruit notes: passion fruit, mango, guava, with a slightly sour grapefruit edge. A solid caramel malt sweetness underpins it all.

That sweetness is the first flavour to hit, but again, the fruit arrives just in time for the party. There’s cantaloupe, melon and some strawberry in there, with some bitter herbs (I caught some sage and thyme) and a little grass.

There’s even a hint of roastiness that comes into play as a sturdy bitterness coats the tongue and attacks the sides of the mouth, leaving a snappy, salty-sour tang.

This then develops into an umame savouriness in the aftertaste and elegant finish, which is long and dry but maybe just a little too thin, but purely in relation to the riot of flavours that have come before.

Nevertheless, this is an extraordinary, unique B.C. IPA that reveals what careful blending of hop strains can achieve.

They're opening one of these in Vancouver at olympic village next summer Craft Beer Market (http://www.craftbeermarket.ca/)

If any body cares, in my experience, I find that these types of bars which have a wide assortment of beers available usually aren't the greatest.

I've been to some equivalent establishments in Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles (Pourhouse) and despite the amount of "second chances" I always find the quality of beer is sub par simply because they don't go through beer often enough to keep it fresh.

On the other hand, a place like Father's Office (http://www.fathersoffice.com/) in Los Angeles is great because only a small handful of beers are served on tap while everything else is bottled and/or canned. Food menu is small and extremely limited in hopes of a high turnover rate.

Hermannator compared to Hermann's, I agree, the strength shields some of the flavour you expect to have. The high alcohol content does add something itself though, a different flavour. I'm not sure whether I enjoy what the high alcohol content adds or not, but if nothing else, it's interesting and not offensive.

I went to Cirque du Soleil and tried some Blanche de Chambly at the VIP open bar. After googling it up it looks like it's from Quebec? Anyways awesome white ale. Creamy, orange, lemon, pepper, and coriander.

I haven't seen these in stores. I had 3 of them.

Is there some sort of province to province regulation in Canada, for beers? I seem to remember hearing something about that a while ago, but can't seem to google it easily.

It's by Unibroue, which has several more common brews you can find at BC Liquor Stores.

Blonde de Chambly is similar to Blanche but more common.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout is tasty and easy to find.

I had a GIB Chocolate Imperial Stout last year that was pretty tasty, it's probably available soon if not already.

Edit: yes GIB Chocolate is in liquor stores now, just picked up a bottle myself.

Ugghhh... Unibroue is by far one of the best microbrews in Canada. What did you have that was so grotesque? La Fin Du Monde is an awesome tripel, Blanche de Chamblay is also terrific. Sounds crazy, but I prefer La Fin Du Monde over Chimay Blue. I can taste the candied malts now, can picture the 2 finger head that just lingers in my goblet and the amazing spiciness for mouthfeel.

Le Terrible is also terrific but is a limited run. Unibrue Grand Reserve 17 is another one of my favs. They make alot of Belgium style beers (Not talking like, 'Stella' btw) which have sweet malts and are generally higher in abv. I had the pleasure of visiting their micrbrew (live in Ottawa right now).

I also highly, highly recommend you guys checking out Dieu Du Ciel. Another remarkable Quebec microbrew. They make an awesome stout - Le Peche Mortel. It is an imperial stout and was served in a tulip glass since a proper pint glass would probably get you loaded damn quickly lol. I will post pics of the microbrew later. Did a tour of all the major microbrews in Quebec with a few buddies. My friend, who is new to beer and thinks Heineken is a good beer, hated Belgium tripels at the beginning loved La Fin Du Monde at the very end of our trip lol

BTW - if I recall correctly, I think Surrey Central brew pub has one of the largest selection of microbrews. There's another one in BBY North near SFU.. think it was Hop and Vine. Go there, because they have Fat Tug on draught. My 2nd favourite Pacific NW IPA after Red Racer. Tried that Switch Back IPA and didn't think too much of it. There is also a Mango infused IPA that is often on draught. Interesting but I couldn't appreciate the clash of flavours.

Thought'd I'd share this:
Nice to hear that they sold old and there is some interest. It's easy to forget this thing is 9% abv. Masks the alcohol so well so be careful..

La Fin du Monde - About the Beer - YouTube

I'm going to point out a few obvious things:

1. Tulip glass (seriously invest in some decent glassware. It will make the experience much more enjoyable in many areas. Taste, appearance, aroma etc..)

2. Room temp or slightly above. Not freezing cold.

3. Watch what he does at the :20s mark

Lastly, you can age most tripels. When I grab a 6 pack, I always leave a few bottles to crack open in a year or two. They taste completely different. The wife hates it. My beer collection is taking over her closet.

Brewery Creek has carried Arrogant Bastard at least once, and there were rumored plans for it to become a permanent fixture but whether they came to fruition I do not know. I'd call, email, facebook Brewery Creek and ask, they're usually a good source for obscure brews. I've had it one time, its a very enjoyable beer; unfortunate its so difficult to find above the 49th. If you do find a source, please update. Good luck.

Personally, I prefer GIB's offering. I have an enduring fondness for GIB though.

In a way, the level of sweetness and vanilla is a fault; but oddly, it's also an endearing quality. It's clearly doesn't try to be balanced, so I'm okay that it's not and simply enjoy it for what it is: a sort of odd, but well brewed beer. Because it's totally off-balance, it's definitely not suited to have a few over the course of an evening. But it is nice to have one, especially on a chilly night.

But, OK Springs is good too.

It's well brewed, and has a balance of roasted malt, spice, sweetness and is a bit creamy. Yup, it's good; but that's about it, and is that enough? It lacks character, or in other words, one undeniable quality that says, choose this beer over all the other seasonal winter releases brewed in British Columbia. I guess, its mildness could be a pitch. It's very drinkable. That's sorta the profile of OK Springs, mild and drinkable. It makes sense for Obsideon to have it on tap, because it has a mass appeal. I'm not sure I'd ever pick it up for myself.

Definitely. I have a few friends who love GIB Winter Ale and a few others who love OK Springs Winter Ale. They're both equally good, just suited to different tastes and contexts. Actually, Parallel 49 CDA would be a better beer to compare to OK Springs Winter Ale. GIB Winter Ale would be more well-compared to a home brewers failed attempt at Winter Ale, which was "ruined" by a misreading of milliliters as liters on the line instructing how much vanilla extract to add. ;)

I enjoy Cariboo, Budweiser, Alexander Keiths, Sleeman, even though they're macros. I understand and respect why they're some peoples' go to beer.

It's like the Scottish version of Kilkenny. It has a nitrogen widget, like Kilkenny and Guiness, but it's fastened to the bottom of the can instead of a free-floating sphere. I think it works better when it's at the bottom.

It's normally $2.40/can at BCL. I think it's on sale right now for $2.10.

On a related note to the related note, Parallel 49's first birthday just passed. It's hard to believe Parallel 49 is such a young brewery, they've taken the marketplace by storm. Granted, they have an all-star brewing team, a clever marketing department, and quite the bankroll, but advantages considered, they've achieved a massive amount of success in a very short time.

Not to mention I haven't been disappointed at any of their beers thus far.

Speaking of Parallel 49, I had a chance to have their most recent release Hopnotist, and it is as awesome as this review says:

Had this in Chicago recently. Really enjoyed it. Like a smoother, less bitter Guinness. Tempted to order a case through BCL, unless someone knows where to get it locally?

GIB winter ale is pretty amazing for winter days. Something with the sweet/vanilla-ish flavor brings back nostalgic memories of hot chocolate in the cold.

Probably didn't make sense to all of you but....yea

Yea I believe they do tastings. I'd so love to get a P49 growler if only they weren't so far from me.

If you're in Seattle Mac & Jacks (http://www.macandjacks.com/beers.php), African Amber.

Edit;
Skagit bridge out, no road trips to Seattle in the near future :(

Tried this at the Tualip Casino and I thought it was pretty good too.

Tried the Mack and jacks in seattle last weekend it's very popular there I found it to be alright it was very mild

Seattle as a whole though has an amazing craft beer scene, at safeco field itself they probably have 15-20 different beers either in bottles/cans or on tap
