so your old drive is pata right?

most new mobo still have pata connection, set the drive to slave and boot it up. Should work

haha I never knew those things were also called PATA.
i just always called them IDE Drives

Anyways - that or you can buy an enclosure and use the drive as an external USB drive as well :)

you can get a IDE to SATA converter/adapter, you can find them at NCIX or ME for 10 to 30 bucks.

I'd prefer to use an IDE to USB adapter personally.
That way there is no confusion over which drive to boot from, you don't have to shutdown your current machine...etc.

Just get this.

Mukii Transimp Series 2.5"/3.5"/5.25" IDE/SATA I/II HDD/SSD to USB 2.0 Storage Adapter - Black - Mukii - TIP-Q120U2SI (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=63950&vpn=TIP%2DQ120U2SI&manufacture=Mukii)

Has the usb to ide adapter amongst others as well as an external power supply. Can't go wrong for $19.99. However if you're planning on using the drive a lot consider am external housing for the drive.
