This would be helpful if someone have had both or used both.. inputs would be great.

The Keurig only brews Coffee, Tea and Hot Chocolate.
The Tassimo can also make Cappuccinos and Lattes..

Not sure which would be good.. I dont usually drink Cappuccinos and Lattes but having the option would be great..

Starbucks is now using Keurig and Tim horton using Tassimo.. hmm...

Tassimo can do tea and hot chocolate as well. Americanos etc

Keurig taste like powder coffee, tassimo with the vacuum sealed containers stay pretty fresh

We had the first one of these that came out, the Melita one:one - the wife wanted one so much, they didn't have them in Canada... had my parents pick one up on a trip to Oregon, had to pop down to Bellis Fair every now and then to stock up on the pods.

Biggest problem with these things is they only do tiny cups. I love my 12oz coffee mug but it barely even fits on the machine and still looks empty after it runs.

Nabob breakfast brew fills a full 16oz cup to the top.

The new Starbucks Verissimo is nice too, does lattes and coffee

I love my Keurig, although I don't really use the k-cups. (My favorite k-cup would be the chai)
But, really good if you like using your own beans.

I usually grind my own, then put them in the little reusable k-cup filter thing. Tastes awesome and very good if you don't want to make a whole pot every time. Also, much faster than drip coffee machines.

Worth the money for me. I never goto starbucks anymore.

I've also tried Tassimo. Not really my thing since you can't use your own beans. I also found that it brews too small of a cup for me. I guess it's ok if you like smaller cups. Their beverages tasted good.

My mom has the keurig, and I have the tassimo.

I do like the latte option on the tassimo, but for me(huge coffee drinker) the grind your own beans thing for the keurig is awesome. I don't know if mom just bought shit coffee, or it was super old, but the cups for her machine didn't taste that good(but I was at the bottom of an assortment box, so I was drinking the emeril 'bam' coffee and paul newmans own blend) Once I found the fill it yourself thing, the coffee was very good.

The tassimo disks are expensive. Not sure what the price is of keurig. Tassimo also seems to be really available.

My father loves the Tassimo machine thingy, he uses it like 4 times a day haha. Tassimo does coffee, hot chocolate, and tea. Tim Hortons and Tassimo did some collaboration and you can now purchase Tim Hortons coffee for Tassimo machines. My father bought some last night, he's on his second cup this morning

I love the smell of fresh coffee beans but I do not like or drink coffee so I have no clue which one is better. I just see my father use the machine quite often during the weekends.

So for the Keurig machine, it acutally grinds the beans for you or you need to grind it with another machine?

I heard about the fill-it yourself with the keurig, so that would save tons of money...

i own both. i made a thread asking this same thing like 2 years ago but didn't get the response i was hoping for so i eventually got both. my 2 cents i hope it helps. sorry for the lengthy post. probably better you not go my route and buy both :lawl:

keurig is a better coffee maker and the kcups are cheaper. if you shop around or buy bulk (the 50 pack at costco) you can get them for 50 cents each (approximately). keurig also has a wider selection of coffee, especially with van houtte. they have my fav hazel nut flavour. you can get adapter/filters where you can grind your own coffee and use it to make coffee. it's nice, more environmentally better but takes time cleaning the filter each time. the OEM keurig filter costs around $18 plus tax. it does get to be a super PITA cleaning the thing out each time though. it's nice using just kcups when you're on the run to pop it in and go

i bought a tassimo because i was the only one that drank coffee and my wife never used the keurig for hot chocolate. it's nice to be able to make fancy drinks like latte's, capacino's, espresso's etc. make no mistake though, if you want it to taste like something you get from starbucks for $5 - that it wont do. but the same can be said for coffee with the keurig if you're a coffee snob.

coffee with the tassimo. for me, it's OK b/c i'm not a snob but the quality of the keurig is indeed better. the discs of the tassimo are indeed more pricy. on sale or at a reasonable price the fancy drinks come out to about $1 per pod. coffee on sale can be around $0.75 if you look around. i drink french vanilla because they didn't have hazelnut until recently (still don't see it in stores).
the cool thing that tassimo advertises is the bar code. volume & heat is determined based on the code for the drink. it tells you the size of cup to use. someone mentioned wanting a larger coffee....that's breakfast blend. my 1st mistake was putting a smaller coffee cup in it...thing overflowed :lawl: the package tells you what size of cup to you.

final verdict: if you're going to use it to make coffee 90% of the time and cost per drink is an issue - go keurig. i suggest the mini (single cup brewer) that's what i had and i like just putting 1 cup of water each time so it doesn't get stale in the resevour of the larger keurig machines. if you make coffee 50% and latte/etc 50%, and possibly entertain and offer warm drinks to people - go tassimo. if you're a health nut, the yummy milk drinks - mochiatto, vanilla latte, chai tea latte, etc are high in fat & cholestoral. skinny latte has no fat or cholestoral (i forget which one - i think fat?).

in the end i gave the keurig to my brother in law because i only had room for 1 on my kitchen counter and liked to switch between lattes and coffees.

hope this helped in your decision.

PS: no the keurig doesn't grind. you do it yourself. either get SB to do it when you buy from them, buy ground ahead of time or go to superstore or whatever and bag/grind it yourself there i guess.
Keurig can brew in like a minute which is nice. brew go brush teeth and come back and you're good. tassimo takes slightly longer, and you can add more water by holding the button down. my mini keurig didn't have the option, maybe higher models do.

Matlock

Keurig is also faster than a drip coffee machine, as it forces water through the little reusable coffee filter. Sometimes I'll wake up late with 10 minutes before I have to leave for work and just pop my filter in, hit brew and still have time to get dressed, etc.

As mentioned above, you will need your own grinder if you're planning to buy whole beans. Otherwise you can always buy ground coffee as I did for a year before getting the grinder.

I've got a buddy who I think still works at starbucks, so I'm looking at the Starbucks Versimo coffee maker (gonna borrow their discount during the christmas sale). Anyone had the chance to sample any of their coffees? I'd mainly be using it for coffee at home, and I can see that the thingie doesn't fit large cups (sadly), but I'm wondering at the quality if anyone's sampled.

I find the responses pretty interesting in here.

I have the Tassimo at home, and the Keurig in my office. I use both on a daily basis.

Personally, I prefer the Tassimo in every way. It has the latte/cappucino option (not that I use it much). But most importantly, I find the coffee just tastes all around better.

I have tried over 10 different types of K-cup coffee, and it always seems to taste really weak to me, no matter what kind of K-cup I use.

Where as for the Tassimo, most of them are pretty consistent, and it just tastes.. fresher?

I'm intrigued at how some people in here straight up prefer the Keurig. I would take the Tassimo any day. I guess different strokes for different folks.

for me it the taste test was between french vanilla since they're essentially the same (or supposed to be) the same flavour of coffee. the keurig one tasted better to me (diff strokes like you said). i might have a diff tune if i tried americanos etc. but i didn't want to buy a box of it and find out i didn't like it and get stuck with a bunch. unlike keurig i haven't seen a tassimo variety pack.
i've only tried tassimo french vanillas and breakfast blend. keurig i've tried i think 2 diff variety packs. they have a LOT of diff types of coffees from diff manufacturers.

^Yeah, Keurig has more selection, I'll give them that.

I use both machines on a daily basis, so it's pretty easy for me to compare. I have a coffee from the Tassimo at home in the morning, and I have a coffee on my break at work from the Keurig.

I try to buy a new type of K-cup every time I need a refill, and still I haven't found one that I actually really like. Not to say that it's bad. But in comparison to Tassimo, I find the T-disc coffee has more substance.

But again that's just me..

I was Tassimo's product rep for a couple years so just a few more points on the Tassimo:

- removeable water jug with Brita filter
- self-cleaning mode

I'm not a huge coffee snob so I won't comment on the quality of the coffees but I absolutely love the Twinnings chai tea latte and the Suchard's hot chocolate.

I have a Tassimo T20, and the machine was only $69+tax. I love their Twinnings Chai tea latte, and the Nabob latte. I've also tried the Kevalia dark Italian roast and it is very very bold. The Tim Horton's coffee tastes just like it, and so is their latte. Overall, the Tassimo is good for making a decent cup of latte.

The discs can be had for cheap if you know where to look for deals. There is a huge ongoing thread on RFD for T-Discs deal. For example, buy 2 get 1 free happens sometime, buy 3 get 1 free as well.

in the long run i would think so. but the OEM keurig filter costs $18 plus tax. so you'll need to figure out cost per ground up bag of coffee and how many it makes vs 50 cents per kcup.

i did that with a giant can of timmy hortons coffee i think it was $10? bloody thing lasted me a year but it lost it's freshness b/c it took so dam long for me to finish it :lawl:

um for van heute we have columbian, this african dark roast, there's a few others i don't remember - to be honest my coworkers and i agree they all kinda taste the same. I usually like columbian roasts but go with the darkest ones here because it seems like there's the possibility that it would make it less mild, but it doesn't. Not a fan at all :-(

we also get a funky flavour every month, it's usualy by something called "Timothy's". I've tried blueberry, french vanilla, pumpkin spice, baileys and a few others. The problem with all of these is they smell great and just like what htey should be, but they just taste like chemicals and the same mild crap. They taste completely differently from what they smell like.

So based just on these two brands i'm not a fan of what i've tried

you usually can find the most basic tassimo for $69.99 i belive it's the T60 or 80 or something i forget which # (i got it when it was on sale at that price and see it on sale like that now all the time). I think they realize if you sell it for cheap they'll make their $ back on the damn discs since there are not filter pods that allows you to do your own coffee. from reading your posts, i'd probably steer you towards the mini/filter combo i had which allows you to do sb kcups on the go or your own ground coffee when you have time. single cup was really nice for me when i'm the only coffee drinker, and no resevoir so no stale water.

downside is that it will make a coffee of X volume (single cup). if you got a thermos and wanna fill 'er up for the entire day you're gonna be brewering a few cups worth to do that or diluting it by adding water after the fact.

For Tassimo, the Gevalia dark roasts are very good and bold. They are a bit pricier but are ok when on sale. I just got a pack of the President's Choice dark roast, so I'll see how that is (the medium was too bland for me).

Right now, competition for both of these is the Starbucks instant stuff (which is surprisingly good), but I'd like to have my coffees at less than $2 a pop. Yeah, I'm not interested in doing the 'my own grinds' thing. As much as I would like to save the environment and be a good person and all that jazz...no. The point of this for me is convenience. I've already got a small 32 oz coffee pot at home; I don't want the bother of having to grab my filter, put in the grinds, brew, clean it out and then repeat.

I want a machine I can have sitting in my kitchen and when I want a coffee I can push a button, go turn on my TV, come back and be nearly ready.

$6 for 14 discs isn't unreasonable at all.

Quick. Which would you guys buy, considering that they're on sale atm. The Keurig Mini, b40 or b60?

depends how much more the B60 is.. reviews are pretty good...

Keurig > Tassimo
Quick to make coffee
cheaper cost per cup
More coffee flavours.
Use your own grinds with filter
Cheaper then Tassimo

Tassimo > Keurig
Specialty coffees
Taste?

So these are the idea of how the both works from reading reviews...
So the better buy would be the Keurig?

Essentially, they're both equally fast at making coffee.. you put in the disc/cup and press a button.

I don't think the K-Cups are THAT much cheaper. The regular coffee T-Discs are usually somewhere between 35 and 50 cents a unit. If the K-Cups really are that much cheaper, I'll gladly pay the extra dime or whatever per unit for a better tasting cup of joe from the T-discs.

Tassimo is more "accurate" with coffee brewing. It reads the barcode and it tells the machine if it's a dark or light roast, if it should let the water brew inside for a bit longer, if it should give a blast of steam at the end, etc.

The Keurig just simply runs water straight through the K-cup. This is probably why a lot of people complain that the K-cups all taste very watery.

The Keurig has a lot more selection, no question.

But this is what I don't understand about people getting the Keurig to use the "use-your-own-coffee" filter. If you're going to plop in your own coffee, put it in the machine, brew, empty and clean the filter... Why not just get a regular single-brew coffee maker for like $20 with a reusable filter?

The point of these machines is convenience. Put in disc/K-cup, press a button, and dispose the old disc/k-cup.

So it really depends what you mean by "better buy." If you want a cheap machine with cheap cups, then maybe the Keurig is a better choice. If you don't mind forking out an extra dime or so per cup, then I think the Tassimo coffee tastes way better. But I guess taste is subjective. If you get a chance to, try a cup of coffee from both ;)

President's Choice Dark Roast T-Discs are not too bad for the price. Stronger but still very 'one-note'. Doesn't have that body/richness that the Gevalia discs do.

"Better coffee" is subjective... and according to the masses, a common complaint is watery coffee from Keurig.

Having to pay for shipping online kinda offsets your savings.

My advice to anyone buying these machines is buy the cheapest one possible! Cuz the pump inside always fail after a year or two. I'm on my third machine now. The $50 to $200 ones all have the same quality pump inside. Think of them as disposable and buy the cheapest one you can find because they'll all fail eventually.

bubba_g is correct. All of these machines do not use commercial/industrial pumps such as Sirai or Ulka and are designed to fail as per a product life cycle engineering schematic.

You're right it's subjective - my mom's idea of coffee is more like, hot water with a hint of coffee flavor.

BTW, we were in Bed, Bath & Beyond today, they have some neat accessories for both of these units:

Quality is hit and miss and all depend on usage and maintenance.

All of these machines are consumer grade with no commercial parts, unless you buy a commercial machine. They are all relatively simple machines consisting of a basic plumbing and electrical system, most of which are made in Asia to reduce production costs and to increase net profits. But of course, there's no need to state the obvious. The bottom line is these machines are for the masses.

My opinion on these machines are based on experience on working with and owning commercial-grade Italian espresso machines.

This maybe true, but generally the tdiscs are more expensive. My parents aren't going to go to the states just for tdiscs and they sure as heck won't go on CL's.

I factored this into which one to get for the parents. I ended up with the Keurig because the cost of the kcups and availability.

I also use a keurig based machine at the office where i tried over 30 flavours already. Even after spending time to adjust more/less water to get the flavour right, it just doesnt stack up against my tassimo at home. The kcup coffees taste more budget overall (unless you have a recipe to make that perfect cup), whereas the tassimo knows exactly what to do (steep, exact temp, brew, water level, steam, etc) and tastes a bit better. But like what Tapioca says, nothing beats a french press! ;)

Yup.

Tassimo uses the barcode to know what to do, depending on the disc... so most coffee from T-Discs will taste more "full" than the K-cups.

Keurig just runs water straight through.

someone mentioned second cup paradiso being really good and i can attest to that. if you like bold coffees then gevalia dark roasts are good too. for more budget friendly types, timmys and most espressos are pretty good (usually sold out). im not a big fan of the milk that comes with some of the flavours, but those gevalias can still create a mean cuppa caramel macchiato nonetheless.

I like the pro's of the Keurig, but I'm leaning towards a tassimo because I don't want to spend money for a regular coffee machine. At home I'd prefer espresso over anything else.

So my question is - does the tassimo make a good espresso?
And for those with Nexpresso experience, does this machine make anything else BUT espresso?

Question for those with the t55..

Are there different levels of - or + ? Or is it only short and tall, with no variations?

Also, does a - (short) equal espresso?

Are there specific espresso shots you can buy?

There are three sizes for coffee. I know the breakfast blend is the extra large size.

Expresso, regular is short, there is the long expresso version and the americano as well.

For anyone who hasn't got a Keurig or Tassimo (like me) yet, but still want cheap instant coffee:

Starbucks (today only) has a buy one get one free on their VIA instant coffee Christmas blend. It's black coffee, makes about a tall size, and tastes damn good. It works out to about fifty cents a cup now that it's on sale, which makes it a great deal. I picked up 4 packs.

Synarchist
12-15-2012, 04:42 AM
the problem with instant powder coffee is that during the freeze dry process, most of the good stuff in coffee is eliminated like the healthy oils and polyphenols that can be present only in fresh brewed coffee

which is why most places brew fresh coffee from fresh grinds or throw out any coffee pots older than 20 minutes as the good stuff in coffee usually degrades within that timeframe

in fact most regular coffee drinkers can taste this difference in quality (rule of thumb is when hot coffee turns cold, throw it away and make another cup)

you could. but i guess running it through the tassimo would run the water through the tdisc to catch as much of the flavour of the grinds as possible as opposed to straight water. not sure how much more flavour you will catch but when i add more water on some of my discs the water coming through is still black.

Graeme S

They're not "better", they're just single-serve. Most people don't want to brew a single pot or grind a bunch of beans for coffee. Even a bodum can be a bunch of work. So these are single-shot coffees for those who occasionally want coffee and don't want hassle afterwards.

I'm pretty sure throwing away paper filters (which are biodegradeable) is better than PLASTIC discs & cups. I even use a reuseable nylon mesh filter in my drip machine.

I understand the convenience of these machines, but less wasteful they most definately are not.

It's a convenience thing. Just pop in a disc, push a button, and there's your cup of coffee. Just toss the used disc into the trash. No mess, no cleaning. I think it was more so the no mess/no cleaning part that sold me.

As opposed to grinding your coffee, putting it in a filter, waiting for the whole pot to finish when you're only having a cup, tossing the grinds and filter, wiping everything down. If you're using a reusable mesh filter, you gotta dump it out, rinse it, wipe it, put it back in. Same with french presses. Wait for water to boil, spoon in grounds, press, serve, dump, rinse, wipe.

I'm pretty sure throwing away paper filters (which are biodegradeable) is better than PLASTIC discs & cups. I even use a reuseable nylon mesh filter in my drip machine.

I think he meant just a convenience thing again. I love my Tassimo, but like you said... it is definitely not less wasteful. I almost feel bad sometimes when I look in my trash and there's a whole mountain of used plastic discs.

From an less biased standpoint - Taste wise, nothing's better than fresh ground beans from a french press. I still use mine once in a blue moon, when I'm feeling fidgety on a weekend and feel like having a different cup of coffee.

I just found it. Didn't look hard enough before.
so it's not 20 cents and you don't even get to keep it.

A charity gets 2cents for every tdisc you send in. You need a min. of 150 tdiscs and you send it in via a prepaid shipping label.

More info here.
TASSIMO Brigade® | TerraCycle (http://www.terracycle.ca/en-CA/brigades/tassimo-brigade.html)

I know most won't do this as collecting 150 tdiscs is a lot and will most likely get in the way.
Though, we have space under our sink next to our garbage so we just put a box there and started dumping our tdiscs into it.

The sound is the water getting sucked through the reservoir and from the vibration of it all.

Actually bought both the Tassimo T55 (Best Buy) and the Keurig B70 (Costco variety pack).

Trying to figure out which one i like better haha. I would probably stick with the Tassimo if it weren't for the limited brands of coffee, but it does make specialty drinks and can brew drinks accordingly based on the barcode.

The Keurig on the other hand has way more options to choose from (Starbucks!) however it's pretty much as it is, flavoured coffee. But the fact that it has the ability for you to use a reusable filter is a bonus.

Will report back when i try them both and make up my mind (course will buy own T-Discs and K-Cups till i decide). Probably the best option for anyone stuck between the two.

I think going with tassimo is more of a gimmick, and with the keurig is more of a coffee machine. Therefor, if I just wanted a coffee machine, I'd go buy a $25 coffe brewer, then spend $100 plus on it.

If you wanted starbucks, you can also get their own brand.

Tassimo's gimmick is part of their selling point.

Tassimo has the barcode thing with different brew options depending on the disc.

Keurig just runs water straight through at one setting like a normal coffee machine.

But the fact that it has the ability for you to use a reusable filter is a bonus.

Hope you're not just getting it for this!
To add to what vafanculo said, if you're willing to go through the process of adding grinds to the filter, brewing, removing the filter and cleaning it, you might as well get a $25 brewer and use that extra $100 for coffee and such

Keurig has 3 settings.. Small, Med, Large cup sizes... not just 1 setting..

I went with the tassimo for the specialty coffees..

Hope you're not just getting it for this!

To add to what vafanculo said, if you're willing to go through the process of adding grinds to the filter, brewing, removing the filter and cleaning it, you might as well get a $25 brewer and use that extra $100 for coffee and such

Naw it's just a "plus" that the Keurig has against the Tassimo. Don't think i'd have the patience to prep and clean the filter every so often anyways, these machines are single serve to begin with.

For me, the Keurig just offers more choices of coffee and offers more control over the size/temperature (be it 5 degrees) of the brew versus the Tassimo and the limited control - though the T55 i picked up at least offers a little bit more control over the strength, not that the other models can't.

But just as the gimmick selling point, i think the Tassimo has me sold since it doesn't just run water through a pod and might actually taste better, just wish it had more choices.

The small/med/large just runs different amounts of water. It still runs through at the same rate.

Where as the Tassimo has different settings for different discs. You'll find that some discs brew faster, and some brew slower.

I guess that's a drawback of the Tassimo, is that you can't simply adjust the size of the serving. :ahwow:

wouldn't buy either. you can make real, quality drinks cheaper and better with real equipment.

fresh milk and freshly ground espresso is where it's at. once you grind espresso the internal oils degrade. that's why you grind it when you use it.

-stove top espresso maker
-hand powered milk throther
-espresso grinder

-for a regular coffe nothings better then a french press. it only takes a few minutes longer then boiling water in a kettle.

I completely and totally agree with everything you say, but rebut potential ownership of these machines with a single word:

LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY.

This is true.. but... how long does it take, including cleaning up just to drink a cup of coffee?

The Cadbury Hot Chocolate was such a big disappointment, didn't taste great. :okay:

Just brewed a larger cup of coffee with my T55 (has a +large or -small serving setting built in), it seemed to have a similar strength to what it was in fully automated mode. Note that i didn't manually add water, just selected the + on the machine and then brewed. :concentrate:

You can on mine. If you want to short pour you press the button where you want it to stop pouring. To long pour you press and hold the button it when it starts 'finishing' and the green light is blinking, it'll keep pouring until you let go of the button.

The thing is you gotta be right there to do it, can't pre-set it.

So as much as I like my tassimo, I grew tired of the instamilk crap quick. Went to the mall to check out frothers, and was gonna buy this $100 one that keurig has since I tried it at my brothers.

Stopped by the nespresso booth to waste some time, and try and weasal a free sample lol. The salesman was bored so he went through his spiel with me.

The nespresso makes a good espresso, but, I don't think its worth the price tag, and the tassimo coffee really isn't bad. Asked him about the frothers, and I ended picking up a frother for $100. It does both a hot froth and a cold froth, plus, makes steam milk for those days I want milk and honey, or hot chocolate.

Btw, Nespresso seems to be the Apple of the one cup brew machines. Will probably own one eventually lol. For those that want a frother, its called Aeroccino 3.

so your frother is not used in conjunction with your tassimo correct?

Not at all. It looks like a coffee bean grinder, but instead of grinding, it froths.

So im going to costco right now with my mom to purchase one of them, either keurig or tassimo. Let's hope this goes well.

If you guys have any quick reccomendations/reviews on anything avaiable right now, please reply as i will check this thread before selecting one.

Make sure you cut open the chocolate syrup t-disk and pour the rest of the syrup in your drink after! Pretty sure it's a design flaw because there is at least half of the syrup still left in the disk after the brew.....=\

You're suppose to shake the T-Disc first or you can heat up the chocolate to get it all out.

Yeah thats what i ended up doing after searching around for answers.

Just let it soak in some warm water for a little bit and then proceeded with making that hot chocolate. Tasted that much better! :concentrate:

Also jumped on to the Buy 2 Get One at London Drugs last weekend, got a Gevalia Caramel Mac & Vanilla Latte and a Second Cup Paradiso Dark.

Just go here and enter the Model and Date Code.

Recall (http://www.tassimosafetyrecall.com/Brewer_Check.HTML)

I'm assuming that'll be the site that'll send you a new T-Disc holder.

Your serial has to be under the recall in order to get the new holder. I entered mine in and it doesn't need the new holder. I'm wondering if it's the earlier models that got recalled?
