Any Parks and Recreation fans here?

After a long search, Marvel Studios has found its lead for its next big superhero franchise, the James Gunn-directed Guardians Of The Galaxy. I hear the role will go to Chris Pratt, the Moneyball star who bulked up and played one of the hero Navy SEALs in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. The role is Star-Lord, the Guardians leader who is the offspring of a human mother and an alien father. A puffier Pratt plays Andy Dwyer on the NBC series Parks And Recreation. He certainly has the charisma to hold the screen.

Marvel had made test deals with Zero Dark Thirty‘s Joel Edgerton, Boardwalk Empire‘s Jack Huston, Cloud Atlas‘ Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace (who has roles in both Lincoln and The Hobbit), and Eddie Redmayne from Les Miserables. More recently, Zachary Levi was identified as a candidate. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was pursued, but he has other plans. An August 1, 2014 release date for the pic is planned.

He was ripped for Zero Dark Thirty and will have to get ripped again for his role as Star-Lord.

I love the casting btw. He's a comedian actor who has proven can act seriously when needed. A mix that is required for this movie where he will be dealing with a talking Racoon and Tree.

Guardians of the Galaxy is the most surprising direction by marvel. It's a recent comic that came out in 2008 and largely unknown to most people. It's the most out-there movie too.

Unless they make it very obvious I doubt a lot of people will even know it is connected to the MCU

If anything they may just borrow elements from the 1969 version but its definitely not based on it at all.

And yes, the new relaunch of the issue has iron man in it.

They are harsh catering the comics to the films a little too much if you ask me.

What I'm also waiting for is a Justice League movie. When is THAT going to come out? Only Chris Nolan's Batman has been successful thus far. We'll see how this new Superman does as well. I thought Ryan Reynolds was okay as Green Lantern, just that the script sucked ass as well as the choice of main villain. Having Blake Lively as Carol Ferris helped. :p

Looks like the Guardians of the Galaxy will be short my sun and stars as Game of Thrones' Jason Momoa has reportedly passed on playing Drax the Destroyer in Marvel's upcoming movie.

Momoa was first linked with the role earlier this month, with Marvel reportedly also screen-testing Isaiah Mustafa (yes, the Old Spice guy), MMA fighter and former wrestler Dave Bautista (The Scorpion King 3, The Man With the Iron Fists), and Brian Patrick Wade (Generation Kill) at the time.

Marvel Studios is notorious for its hardball negotiation tactics and low-salary offers (unless, of course, you're Robert Downey Jr.) and Momoa (and his reps) wouldn't be the first to balk at Marvel's offer.

However, as Latino-Review scoop-meister El Mayimbe tweets, "Marvel is back to screen testing actors for Drax. Somebody needs to remind Momoa that nobody saw his last 2 films & take Marvel's offer."

For how long can Robert Downey, Jr. play Iron Man? It's a nice problem for Marvel to have, one supposes, considering that it was only five years ago when the first Iron Man film was about to come out and the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe was an unproven concept.

But the fact is, Downey, Jr. is getting expensive for Marvel. The notoriously cost-conscious studio reportedly had to fork over upwards of $50 million to the actor for The Avengers, including box office bonuses and backend compensation. Plus, word has it that Downey, Jr.'s contract is up after Iron Man 3 hits this May, so Empire recently asked Tony Stark himself how much longer he might stick around in the metal suit.

"Let's just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it," Downey, Jr. said in that typical Downey, Jr. way. "There's a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: how do you sustain something? I'm not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I'm not [too] picky about that either."

Of course, Marvel's head honcho Kevin Feige has floated the possibility of replacing Downey, Jr. eventually, James Bond style. "I hope Downey makes a lot of movies for us as Stark," Feige said back in April. "If and when he doesn't, and I'm still here making these movies, we don't take him to Afghanistan and have him wounded again. I think we James Bond it."

Empire asked the actor how he would feel about that, but he doesn't seem to be sweating it.

"It would probably be the best thing in the world for me," he said. "You know, ego... but sometimes ego just has to be smashed. Let's see what happens. I take the audience very seriously - I feel bad when I see folks doing movies and the audience is like, 'Don't do that anymore.' I don't have to overstay my welcome..."

My humble suggestion would be to blast Tony off into space or something once you know Downey, Jr. is done -- send him on a mission from which the actor/character might eventually return years later for a cameo or grand return appearance. But what do you guys think? Will it still be Iron Man if a different actor is playing him?

I think that's what the were aiming at for the 2nd movie (alcholism) but I guess they decided to downplay it a bit.


I understand that the MCU is the biggest thing in superhero movies right now but it started with RDJ. Does it have enough legs to move on by itself without him?

I think they'll need to bring in a new hero that has just as big an impact as RDJ did to be able to move on without him. Right now, Evans, Hemsworth, and the rest aren't enough.

I doubt it, but I hope Guardians of the Galaxy really blows everyone away.

Filming has officially wrapped on Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot. It is now being rushed through the post-production phase so it can be screened by ABC. If the execs at ABC give the pilot a thumbs up, it will air this fall as the first episode of a weekly series.

It has been confirmed that the S.H.I.E.L.D. series will take place after the events of last year’s The Avengers. It will be part of Marvel’s ‘Phase 2’ continuity, (Which includes Iron Man 3, Thor: Dark World, Captain America: the Winter Soldier, and the Guardians of the Galaxy) which bridges the gap between the first Avengers film and the intended 2015 sequel.
Marvel’s creative consultant Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly) directed and co-wrote the pilot. The production is a family affair. He wrote it along with his brother Jed Whedon and Jed’s wife Maurissa Tancharoen, who is one of the producers.

Bautista has officially joined the cast of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, says a story at The Hollywood Reporter. He will play the part of Drax the Destroyer opposite Chris Pratt in the August 1, 2014 release.

Some very interesting news has just landed as director Bryan Singer has revealed, via his Twitter feed, that "American Horror Story" star Evan Peters has joined the cast of the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past in the role of Magneto's son, Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver. The news arrives in the wake of confirmation from Joss Whedon that Quicksilver and his sister, Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, both have roles in his script for Marvel's The Avengers 2.

"Before he was an #Avenger," Singer writes, "he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver."

The news also arrives following confirmation this morning that Saoirse Ronan is interested in taking on the Scarlet Witch role in Marvel's The Avengers 2. The actress is said to be the "model" for Whedon's iteration of the character.

"We both have them," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told SuperHeroHype of the character rights last summer. "There's a specific arrangement with those two characters that would allow us to use them with 'Avengers,' but not discuss or reference their mutant or Magneto-related lineage. They can use them as mutants and as Magneto's relatives, but cannot have anything to do with 'The Avengers.'"

X men animated series in the 90s wasnt produced by Fox but it aired on their channel which how this whole Xmen deal started

Regarding Ultron in Avengers 2...
After saying that he always wanted to use Ultron as the villain in a sequel, Whedon would go on to clear up some misconceptions that the title has caused. "Well, because there was a book called 'Age of Ultron' quite recently, a lot of people have assumed that is what we're doing, but that is not the case. We're doing our own version of the origin story for Ultron. In the origin story, there was Hank Pym, so a lot of people assumed that he will be in the mix. He's not. We're basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside."

So, if Hank Pym doesn't create Ultron, who does? Well, Tony Stark seems to be the most obvious candidate, especially after Iron Man 3 showed that he had managed to create sentient versions of his armour. "We're crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from The Avengers we already know about. It's a little bit darker than the other film because Ultron is in the house. There's a science fiction theme that wasn't there in the other one. Ultron is definitely something that evolves, so we're going to get together a couple of different iterations. Nothing can be translated exactly as it was from the comics; particularly Ultron." Finally, he was asked about the scale of the movie and which character he is most enjoying writing and revealed: "It's very much a global Avengers film. A lot of the movie has to do with their place not just in America, but the world. Part of the fun for me, definitely this time around, is writing Hawkeye. He did get possessed pretty early by a bad guy and had to walk around all scowly for most of the movie so now it's nice to actually have the character there and see him interact with the other guys." After the twist in "Iron Man 3," many are still convinced that Ben Kingsley will be brought back for more Marvel films. Now that Kingsley is promoting "Ender's Game," The Belfast Telegrapher asked the actor if he has something in the works with the company.

"It's a secret Marvel project. I'm not allowed to say any more, you're going to have to wait and see," he said, adding: "I was with many members of the crew that were involved in 'Iron Man 3.' It was lovely to see them again. It was great to be with this wonderful family."

It's possible that Kingsley will reprise his role in a Marvel short-film, but many are still hoping that the events in "Iron Man 3" are not what they seem and that the actor will return as The Mandarin. Stay tuned.

and he's been multiple characters and also responsible for the creation of one the avengers greatest villains

You guys may not be comic book geeks.
But there's a reason why Marvel is generally favored over DC.

DC's character's are like a pantheon of gods.
Each with their unique roles and archetypes to play out.
Batman is one of their better characters, and that's why he's so popular.

Marvel on the other hand has a touch more depth.
It's not about a character's powers. It's more about that personalities, what drives the characters and their story.


There has been more than 1 Ant-Man
Pym is the original Ant-Man, he discovered the Pym particles. It's one of the cornerstones of advanced tech for the Marvel universe.
He's also responsible for Ultron, arguably Avenger's greatest foe.
Think about the Avengers as attempting to keep SkyNet in check.

I’m disappointed that the dinner-party scene, described by the chosen nerds who saw the trailer at Comic Cons San Diego and New York, was not included in this version. The scene apparently was all the Avengers hanging out, swilling Tony Stark’s rare scotch, and trying to lift Thor’s hammer. Everyone fails, one after the other. But then Captain America manages to budge it, just a little, leading to a Thor Jack Benny reaction. It sounded like a funny bit, the kind of thing I loved about the first movie.

What a day! With everything from Black Panther casting news to the reveal of a full slate of Marvel releases, there's enough to keep us all going for a very long time. However, conspicuous by his absence was Spider-Man. With Civil War officially kicking off in Captain America 3, and Thanos taking centre stage in a two-part Avengers epic, where does this leave the Sony owned character who has been rumoured to be making the leap to Marvel Studios? Kevin Feige was asked exactly that today, and responded with the following: "Anything that wasn’t specifically and obviously revealed today is either not true at all, or still rumor until it’s worked out." While it would be easy to read into how he ends that sentence (Marvel and Sony must be coming to a deal!), let's look at this logically for a second. Captain America 3 isn't setting up Civil War for a future Avengers movie; it's an adaptation of that storyline which will involve Black Panther and have to address the hunt for Bucky. Will Marvel really shoehorn Spidey into all of that? Probably not, and though he might make an appearance in the two-part Avengers movie, do Marvel need him? No! What do you think?

When it was first reported ahead of today's announcement that Captain America 3 would adapt the famous Civil War storyline to the big-screen, many wondered how would directors Joe and Anthony Russo get around that fact that there aren't many secret identities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not to mention there are characters in the comic storyline that are owed by other studios. Well, after the presentation today, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained: I don't want to give too much away, but needless to say, the generalities of the [Superhero Registration] act are the same. Something happens. Perhaps, it's culmative for things that have happened from all of the movies leading up to this point. As many of the governments of the world say, 'We need to have some oversight of these guys; They need to report to somebody'. So, it falls more under that umbrella versus 'take off your mask'. It's not about the secret identity thing as much as it is about overall who reports to who and who can agree to an oversight. Because of now, in Avengers 2, there is no more Security Council, obviously there is no more S.H.I.E.L.D. Stark is paying for it, Captain America is running it, and things occur that make governments began to question that." One of the earliest announcements during Marvel Studios' press event in Los Angeles today was that the Thor 3 is officially titled Thor: Ragnarok and that it is scheduled for release on July 28, 2017. While the subtitle indicates that Chris Hemsworth's Mighty Avenger will be dealing with the end of the Universe in Norse Mythology, Kevin Feige confirmed that Loki will return, played once again by Tom Hiddleston. "This is a very important movie for us in Phase 3," said the producer. "We plan on taking Thor to another level. It picks up where we leave Thor in Avengers: Age of Ultron and impacts everything that comes after." Next up, was the announcement of the Inhumans adaptation, which Kevin Feige promises will "introduce dozens of characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe." He continued, "We really do believe the Inhumans can be a franchise or a series of franchise unto themselves. They have dozens of powers and an amazing social structure. With our 20th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we wanted to continue to refine what that universe is about." The Marvel Studios president then talked about his passion project, Doctor Strange, which will introduce magic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "It takes a while to work on these movies before they're ready to come to you in theaters," said Kevin Feige. "Doctor Stephen Strange, brilliant neurosurgeon, bit of an arrogant fellow who gets in a car accident and ruins what he thinks are the tools of his trade: his hands." He continued, "In the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the supernatural, that involves everything from quantum mechanics to string theory. The idea of this film is to open up a whole new corner of the cinematic universe. We want to enter, through Strange, the world of parallel dimensions." Directed by Scott Derrickson, with Benedict Cumberbatch all but confirmed to play the character, Doctor Strange will be released on November 4, 2016. Next up, there was the long-awaited announcement that Black Panther will get his own movie, come November 3, 2017. A lot of people are complaining about how there are 'too' many superhero movies but I kinda see how Marvel can make this work.

Thor 1's director was Kenneth Branagh... One of the last people you would expect to do an action movie. His speciality is Shakespeare and Thor does feel a little bit like a tragedy.

Captain America Winter Solider felt like a throwback to some older espionage spy movies. Robert Redford was a big hint to this since he's the king of this genre.

Guardians is a space opera ensemble thing kinda like Star Wars/Trek.

I think the plan is to do each movie like a good "something" movie with superheros in it instead of a superhero movie with "some genre" elements.

Ant-Man sounds like it's going to be a comedy. Dr. Strange maybe quasi-horror/Tim Burton? Civil War could be more political especially if someone like Capt goes on trail.

It's an interesting about-face. In the 90's and early 2000's, Marvel was completely broke, licensing out their shit to anyone who would give them a dime. That's how they ended up with weird mixed licenses all over the place, between Sony, Fox, etc.

Now Sony is broke, and Marvel/Disney is super rich. Sony still owns the rights to Spiderman, so now Marvel has to work UNDER them to make a Spiderman movie.

if u look at the bigger picture with the whole sony spiderman debacle, be glad that avi arad is no longer attach to the new spiderman movies. he will only be credited as executive producer

there was a story that avi forced sam raimi to include venom in S3 and kept interferring during production and script re writes.. like how topher grace was casted and the inclusion of gwen stacey.. everything felt off with the movie

apparently sony and avi arad gave mark webb some freedom with amazing spiderman hence the different costume look and feel of the movie.. i actually like the first movie

they nixed all that for the sequel and made a more traditional spiderman movie.. and thats when avi got involve in the press release saying spiderman is king and marvel needs to bow down to it if they want spiderman to cross over.

when andrew garfield was doing interviews about why amazing spiderman 2 failed, from the internet reaction,it sounded like he blaming avi arad and small group of poeple and not the whole studio for interfering with the movie

It’s interesting. I read a lot of the reactions from people and I had to stop because I could feel I was getting away from how I actually felt about it. For me, I read the script that Alex [Kurtzman] and Bob [Orci] wrote, and I genuinely loved it. There was this thread running through it. I think what happened was, through the pre-production, production, and post-production, when you have something that works as a whole, and then you start removing portions of it—because there was even more of it than was in the final cut, and everything was related. Once you start removing things and saying, “No, that doesn’t work,” then the thread is broken, and it’s hard to go with the flow of the story. Certain people at the studio had problems with certain parts of it, and ultimately the studio is the final say in those movies because they’re the tentpoles, so you have to answer to those people.
