Where's the best place to get gas on the way to or in Bellingham?

Fucking asshole made me wait 30 mins to tell me I m good to go.

Gas is pretty cheap in Ferndale. It's closer to the border and no lineups. Costco on weekdays is good up until about 4:30 pm.
When you save 5 cents a gallon, it's like a cent a litre. Not worth waiting in line, especially when you're in a hurry to shop hard and beat the traffic going back. It's all about the planning and being efficient. No time for rest. You rest after you cross the border back into Canada, LOLOLOL.
BTW, Americans are into coupons........so many good deals out there.

^Staples, for one. They have fantstic deals and coupons every month. To get their e-mails, simply sign up for a rewards card. You need a US address, but it can be any address. They don't send stuff through the mail, anyway.
Also sign up for Kohls, Fred Myers, Macy's, etc.
If you google coupons USA, you'll get shit loads of websites. Need to wade through it all.
Then, there's ebates.......
Coupons, Promo Codes and Cash Back Savings - Ebates.com (http://www.ebates.com/)
Jack in the Box coupons.......... mmmmmm....... until I got food poisining there one day (probably pink slime, LOL).
Going cross border today......... it's seniors day - free slot play, hee hee.
Also gonna go to Fasteners Inc. to pick up some fasteners, maybe Michael's (50% off one item coupon), and gas, of course.
Haven't gone to Trader Joe's and Harbor Freight in a while...........

I figured someone was going to mention Costco. How much cheaper are they usually? I'll have to check out Ferndale since I don't have Costco membership.

Costco Bellingham was $3.49USD/gallon last week.

Costco Bellingham can also be absolutely chaotic at times with the lineups and the mofos filling up 5-10 jerrycans.

Which border?
I figured someone was going to mention Costco. How much cheaper are they usually? I'll have to check out Ferndale since I don't have Costco membership.
$3.559/gal for 87 Octane at Costco today.
$3.559 at Pilot in Ferndale.......$3.689 for 89 Octane, and $3.819 for 92 Octane.
Pilot is like a Husky gas station. The kind you see out in the boonies..... truckers' oasis (showers, restaurant, truck wash, etc.). The one in Ferndale is also next to a McDonalds. I guess it's the first McDonalds you hit along the I5.
I crossed the border at Sumas at around 1:30 this afternoon and there was a 2 car wait. Went to casino for an hour. Arrived at Costco and there was zero lineup at the pumps.
Coming back there was a 10 minute lineup at Peace Arch. This was around 5:00 PM. So much win............ until I decided to take 99 through Richmond instead of the usual Alex Fraser route. Frick, that tunnel sucks ass. Never do that again.
Wait wait wait... There is harbour freight in bellingham? Google here i come...

I think the gas prices at Fred Myers are slightly higher. I always check on the way back. With the discount, Fred Myers might be slightly cheaper. I don't shop often at FM, but a lot of their stuff is expensive. 12 can pack of pop for $4.00, on sale??? I saw a lot of people buying it, so I thought it was 2/$4.00. I double checked and it was for one.
No Frills has 12 can packs of pop for $2.97. Hell, even Safeway has them for $3.50.
Bananas were 79 cents a pound at FM today. Superstore is 59 cents a pound.
So, dairy is cheaper, but most other things are same or higher in the US. People automatically assume stuff is cheaper down south. It's not always the case.

I do the majority of my shopping at FM. Bottle pop is usually cheaper but I grab the cans for flavors you can't get in Canada. Juice, meat, and dry goods like pasta are cheaper as well, and I can generally get an extra weeks worth of food compared to my shopping list in Canada. I have a number in Washington via my aunt so I get the discounted gas, price is on par with those El cheapo stations, averaging 3.69 a gallon.

When I say prices are higher in the US, you have to remember I shop at places like No Frills and only buy stuff that's on sale. Pasta? No Frills has Unico pasta (900g) for 99¢ when on sale. I understand the pop flavours, as you cannot get Vanilla Coke up here. You can get stuff just as cheap or cheaper up here in Canada, if you shop wisely and know your prices.

yah..i know some prices are more expensive...i don't drink pop that much and since my wife is a couponer, we still have tons and tons of pop at the house...heck, i think i still have 5-6 boxes of nestea ice tea when they had the free box coupon...we have more than a years worth of soap and shampoo so we don't shop for those...its more the dairy for the kids and ice cream for us...
btw, anyone tried the new winco? i heard that its cash only but prices seemed to be good...
Oh wow, they have a Winco in Bellingham now? Hmmmmmm....... gotta go check it out. I went to one when I drove down to SoCal and it was different. Employee owned store. Thanks, another place to go.......

Lawsuits launched after US border guards vent about Canadians | News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/2013/09/27/lawsuits-launched-after-us-border-guards-vent-about-canadians/)
BELLINGHAM (NEWS1130) – Americans border agents are said to be venting online about Canadians heading south of the line.
Businesses on both sides of the 49th parallel have now launched a lawsuit.
The accusations include US Customs and Border Protection Agents picking on Canadians and in some cases looking to ban them from entering the country for five years.
There is an online forum where – apparently – agents are using fake names and posting things like “All of this can be solved if we just annex Canada and make it the 51st state,” and “Canadians that assert their right to come to the US amuse me.”
Immigration lawyer Greg Boos thinks the technology is out there that would allow CBP to track the people down and could subpoena the records of the chat board. “Find out who these people are, and get them out of the customs and border protection agency. They don’t have the right to be serving the public when they have that kind of attitude.”
The forum’s disclaimer says the site is just a place for officers to exchange information.
SOME SAMPLE POSTS from the forums:
Nothing worse than a whiny Canadian who thinks they have every right in the world to live here because they are Canadian. In the meantime any US citizen who had a DUI 20 years ago isn't allowed into Canada, but they don't talk about that do they? Oh and I just love the Canadian TN applicants while in secondary getting processed just babble on and on about how great Canada is. If Canada is so great why are you moving to the US to work?????!?!

Yeah for some reason the 9/11 security panic hasn't trickled down to US customs. They were polite and professional when I hopped down to Point Roberts once to pick up something, but the CBSA agent actually SCOLDED ME for buying American and not supporting the Canadian economy.
If Canada is so great why are you moving to the US to work?????!?!
Dumbass Amurican.......... if it weren't for Canadians and others from around the world working in the US, America would be in shambles. America is the land of opportunity. Can you imagine if you had nothing but Americans working in the US?
10 times the population..... there's work to be had down south.
Anyway........my experience on both sides have been good. I love going to the US. I find them pretty friendly folks. I guess the bad apples are the ones people remember.
I can see how some of them are upset with Canadians. Some Canadians do some mighty stupid things when down in someone else's county.

The health insurance thing is a big enough deal that I wouldn't want to live in the states without a steady job. Of course, being Canadian, there's no way in hell I'll get a work visa unless I have a secure-enough job that would offer good insurance anyway.
For self employed people, it's a big load off your shoulders to not have to worry about health care.

As a non-Canadian, (well, I am technically a Canadian citizen, but i do not consider myself Canadian, which Canada allows fully, which I really dislike, I prefer the US system where you go there to be an American - but I'm going way off topic) - I have to say, I find the general viewpoint of Canadians to be that they are better than Americans (always with the free healthcare, and 'we're more polite') - yet they jump at the opportunity to work down there... so, with that the poster has a point.
On a slight aside, much like one can't say they 'hate LA' (as it's like 20+ towns in one), you can't dislike americans, they are such a diverse people, just like canadians - huge country, totally different viewpoints, attitudes, etc. in each state.
i, for one, have always enjoyed my interaction with americans, and can, to the same degree say the same about canadians... but i tend to interact with less sketchy looking ppl and i go to the nicer neighbourhoods - so maybe my 'sample' of people isn't fair of all ;)
i went to the states last week, MY GOD, do we ever get ripped off up here. name brand stuff, 1/2 the price of equivalent stuff here (i know its cheaper, i used to live in the US - but this trip really shocked me, maybe i was just lucky - in bed, bath, and beyond (for the mrs.), she bought something up here, was 2/3 the cost down there, not on sale)... i think $300 ish between gf and i on a day trip, no tax, very happy with our shopping trip.

you know you can buy health insurance, right? and don't think they pay anywhere NEAR the taxes/deductions we pay up here - net, net, it's not at all different, all in once you have paid for insurance.
not every situation is the same, i know... but people are ignorant to how things actually work down there, one thing is they pay loads less tax, and way less of a cost of living, so if you have to pay $100-200-500 a month in healthcare, who cares if you pay $800 less in housing, $100 less in fuel, and $400 less in taxes a month?
(those numbers come from my butt, FYI)
I prefer the US system where you go there to be an American
A friend of mine has been in the US for over 20 years. He has no desire to get US citizenship. My wife's uncle is not even from NA and he has no desire to become American citizen. His children and grandchildren are American, of course. Dude is like very well off. Started a business in the US and had lots of people working for him - now retired.

many people may have to give up their home citizenships, which is a HUGE deal to many. if you have a green card in the US, then the difference is minimal, if you don't plan on being a criminal.
there's also worldwide taxation even if you're not a resident, when you are a citizen.
personally, i think a US passport is the most important document in the world, but then again, i am spoiled having the two passports i currently have (EU and Canada)
i would likely drop my canadian citizenship in a heartbeat to get an american one - some would call me crazy, we all have our own desires and reasons (again, having my british passport means i can do certain things that i don't need a cdn passport for - yet i'd never give that one up as it means i can work in all of europe)
edit: also, not being a citizen in the US doesn't mean you're not american - when i lived there, i was a resident, and i was a true american loving patriot (don't read that as a southern state, bible bashing, foreigner hating hick, read it as someone who loved the place i was in, and would happily tell anyone who asked, and i happily pledged my allegiance to the flag of the united states of america)

Haven't been there in late october, but i was down there in august and they had wildfires and it was extremely hot and humid from all the fires. It was hard to breath down there.

Back to Peace Arch it is.
Crossed Peach Arch on 25th Weds and was in a bitch of a line.
Each car took like a good 2-3 minutes (usually it's 30-40 secs and you are good to go). 1 out of 2 cars got pulled over for search and to go inside to pay tax (mine included).
I've traveled before with the same declaration dollar amount and no tax, but on this day got pulled in to pay duties, so YMMV.

Take truck crossing. It's immediately at the border, and much more convenient to get to.
Decided to go drive down to Seatle/Tacoma area to do some RC/Model shopping. Got to border at around 6 am to face a 30+ minute lineup. Frick, should have taken truck crossing, which was 20 minutes. Anyway........ gas at Pilot in Ferndale was $3.29/gal for regular. Gas at Burlington Costco was one cent cheaper. So, if any of you are going to get gas in the US, it's way more efficient to go to Ferndale.
Anyway, car related news...... Mobil 1 is on sale at Costco for $27.99 for 6 quarts. They had 10W30, 5W30, and 5W20 at the Burlington Costco (I'm assuming all US Costco carry the same stuff). Sale is on till the 27th of this month.
On the way back, I was listening to AM traffic station and heard there was a 2 hour wait northbound into Canada at Peace Arch and a 1.5 hour wait at the truck crossing. I was like :fuckthatshit: Sumas was reported as 15 minutes. I was just outside Bellingham when I found out, so I took the Sunset Drive exit and headed to Sumas via Nooksack. Took the backroads to the border crossing and got across into Canada in 5 minutes. :fullofwin:

My drivers license is set to expire this month, so I receive info from ICBC about renewing it and all the options and features you can add to a new license. Since I cross the border two to three times a week, I thought applying for an enhanced drivers license would be beneficial. I really don't like carrying my passport around, so if my drivers license can take care of that, it's a bonus.
Anyway, I went in on Monday of last week to apply and received the EDL this past Friday. Fast or what? I immediately activated the card, but could not use it for 72 hours. This morning, I crossed over to Sumas and tried out the RFID, and sure enough, it worked. While talking to the border guard, I was told that Sumas crossing has a "ready lane" effective as of June 2013. That means with my newly acquired EDL, I can go through the Nexus Lane! Damn.
The ready lane is not available until 11:00 AM and shuts down at 6:00 pm on weekdays and is open from 8:00 am till 6:00 pm on weekends. NICE!!!
When crossing back into Canada, no such luck. When I asked the CBSA agent about a ready lane he started to go a little squirrly on me and proceeded to tell me if I ever go into the Nexus lane, blah, blah, blah.......... After the hundreds of times I've crossed the border back into Canada, I finally ran into a jerk. He claimed I didn't answer his question a couple of times, when in fact, I did. I think he was trying to get me to lose my cool, LOL. I was about to get the guy's badge number, so I could report him, but didn't.............. because I'm not an a$$hat.
The only issue with the Nexus lane at the Sumas/Huntingdon crossing is that when there is a huge ass lineup, nobody with a Nexus card can get anywhere near the beginning of that lane. I'm sure there are other ways, like cutting in from the subdivision there and whatnot. Anyone use the Nexus lane at Sumas know how it's done?
inv4zn
10-16-2013, 09:24 AM
^Are you sure you can go through the nexus lanes?
Last time I crossed at Peach Arch with my nexus, I asked the guard what the "RFID Ready Lanes" (or something) are for, and he said they're for Nexus and EDL's, and that I can use that lane if I want. He then said the EDL drivers have to wait in line with everyone else, but can proceed to the Ready Lane when they've reached it, instead of fanning out to the other open lanes.
Traum
10-16-2013, 09:27 AM
IMO, Nexus is a better deal than EDL. IIRC, it's $50 for Nexus vs $35 for EDL, but with Nexus, you get the priority Nexus lane where it is usually much faster.
Also, one time when I accidentally pulled out my EDL instead of my Nexus card, and used it at the Pt Roberts Nexus lane, the RFID scanner picked up my card, but the US border guarded immediately proceeded to grill me about how the lane was for Nexus only and that I didn't have a Nexus card. Realizing my mistake, I showed him my Nexus card and it was all good again. But the encounter suggests to me that the Nexus lane is really only for Nexus only, not for EDL.
inv4zn
10-16-2013, 09:32 AM
Yeah, RFD thread also reveals experiences of people, Nexus lanes (both at border and the dedicated lane to the right) are for Nexus card holders only, not EDL.
You save a bit of time by going through the crossing in the Ready Lane, but you must still line up.
I like the EDL because I can leave my passport at home.
At Sumas, the ready lane is the same as the Nexus lane, so that is a bit of a bonus for guys like me who use that particular crossing most of the time.
I wAnder when the CBSA is going to get on board with the iead.
Also, I cross the border before any Nexus lane is open, so Nexus and ready lanes are not a big deal, really.
inv4zn
10-16-2013, 11:02 AM
I wAnder when the CBSA is going to get on board with the iead.
Thanked solely for this.
So, here is the explanation according to the promo sheet I got from US Customs agent this morning.
In our continuing efforts to facilitate the traveling public and enhance U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Trusted Traveler Programs, CBP announces that effective Monday, June 10, 2013 the NEXUS program at the port of Sumas, WA will include a Ready Lane for travelers holding Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) documents; the hours will be from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays, the NEXUS Lane will be converted to a Ready Lane from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Make sure you check for cancellations when waiting for your nexus appt.
My buddy's initial appt was in 2014. He kept checking for cancellations and got an appt this week at DT office.

They mail it to you and then you have to activate it IIRC. It took me a couple days to get it.

That's why they need someone monitoring the traffic at the peace arch duty free to make sure they actually buy something like they do at the truck crossing.

Picked up some parcels at 24/7 parcel yesterday and came back through truck crossing and got taxed like $45. Does anyone know if I am supposed to be charged 12% on the value of the items BEFORE US tax or after US tax? Because the cashier charged me 12% tax on the total (which included 8.5% WA tax).

I was charged after US tax. The agent who rung it in deducted the shipping charges though. I originally thought the value that I declare was before tax, so when the amount the agent charged me and the value that I verbally declared was off, I went over the math the agent and that's when he clarified for me.
I'm curious to see if there is some fineprint that outlines exactly how the "value of goods" is calculated.

I asked this one time and the officer referred me to a memorandum:
Memorandum D13-4-3
CUSTOMS VALUATION: PRICE PAID OR
PAYABLE (CUSTOMS ACT, SECTION 48)
Export Duties and Taxes
16. The amount of any duties and taxes, that are paid or payable to the government of the country of
export in respect of the imported goods by reason of the goods having been exported, is to be treated as
part of the price paid or payable for those goods in determining the value for duty under section 48.

so them charging tax on tax is correct :okay:

You also pay tax on any labour or services you paid for down there.
Case in point, I paid about $700 for tires, with WA tax, their environmental fees, labour for mounting and balancing, as well as $20 for extended warranty thing, and I paid tax on every item.
Good information to have.
would a guy living the states be taxed bringing stuff over to sell here?
he technically didn't buy anything
inv4zn
10-29-2013, 01:06 AM
It's not really about whether you bought anything or not, it's the value of the items you're taking/bringing across the border. Technically, every time you buy something in the states and bring it back, you are importing it, and clearing it yourself at the border/customs. And you are implying you are using them for personal use, not commercial purposes (ie. selling.)
This is why UPS charges you exorbitant rates when you order stuff from the states into Canada; "brokerage fees".
Likewise, a US resident bringing stuff up here to sell would have to "import" it into Canada. It may also fall into commercial categories, in which case a whole other issue occurs. I think you need to be a Canadian resident to sell stuff in Canada. I know the US has this law.
They categorize between personal use and commercial.
That being said, much like the 0$ limit for tax/duty exemption if you stay less than 24 hours, it's up to the discretion of the officers, I find.
Went across at 6:25 this morning and regular gas was 3.13/gal in Sumas. Filled up the car and a jerry can.
I also picked up a parcel at 24/7 Shipping.
I was in and out of the US in less than 15 minutes total.

Are you talking about the border guard experience at the regular crossings, or the ones at the Nexus lane?
With Nexus, I never get any hassle at any of the local crossings (PR, Peace Arch, truck crossing, and Sumas). In the regular lane, however, I have had a lot more poorer experience with the PR border guards.

Nexus only.
Last trip thru, was returning something, declared that I was shipping something back that I had picked up earlier and of course pulled inside to pay the port usage fee to shipping something from PR.
Coming back thru on the same trip, declared my $60 hockey helmet with the receipt of course and nexus guard didn't believe the price. Eventually after discussing his expertise in hockey equipment prices online and confirming the item was indeed $60 by another guard, was able to go.
Of course they didn't pull the guy behind me who filled up 4 x 5 Gallon jerry at the USA Gas station because he probably didn't declare anything except milk and tank of gas.
PR guards have nothing better because well PR has nothing except parcel pickup places. It's like shooting ducks in a barrel. I declare everything all the time, only have had issues at PR. I cross once or twice in a week regularly and sometimes 3/4 times in a week in the summer time.
So glad that 24/7 opened up.

Correct, you're not allowed any amount under 48 hours but usually customs will let you go through. I got 2 myself, told the border guard and she didn't care. And every time I go to BevMo I'm soooooooooo tempted to buy hard liquor because it's so cheap but it's not worth getting caught.
And one other thing; remember to sign up for the free BevMo card, you get further discounts. I picked up some cheap yellow tail for my dad, regular price for a large bottle was like $14, with the card it was like $8. Unreal savings.

By "not allowed", doesn't that just mean you have no tax/duty exemption on the alcoholic beverages as long as you declare it? You'll get taxed big time, so it'll end up being more expensive than buying locally.
Harvey Specter
10-30-2013, 11:44 PM
Well technically they can tax you but I believe they give you a option to forfeit the wine. Knock on wood but I've bought wine on every trip I go down and customs officers don't seem to be bothered over a wine bottle. Hard liquor is a different story.
Damn, if only the exchange rate improves before Christmas..........
Hovering at 95.5 ish.
Still, free shipping and no taxes makes it worth the time and effort. Plus, I find service so much better south of the border. Maybe it's just me, but I'm getting pretty tired of being treated poorly by businesses up here.
Only a handful of Canadian businesses I deal with on a daily basis, actually care about their customers. Mike, Keith, Jeff, your shop would be one of the good ones.
Anyway......

I don't like to bring it up amongst people, as I am generally pro US, pro UK (I'm a Brit) and somewhat anti Canada, but yes, yes, yes, service in the US is far superior to Canadian customer service, to the point where I am sometimes disgusted by the lack of customer first attitude up north, it's disgusting!
I find Canadian people think very highly of themselves, giving this image of being super polite, kind, with a go out of the way for you attitude. No, wrong, I find my interaction with Americans way better, with way better service - no wonder I do all my shopping in the states (the fact it's yay cheaper and more convenient is an added bonus

I usually am not the driver to go through Nexus coming home, so I am not the person to wave our Nexus cards on the reader. But this time, it was just me and bf going through Truck Crossing and I was driving, so I took the cards out and waved 'em - I wasn't sure if it worked or not so I waved it a couple times more - drove ahead - the agent yelled and berated me and was like, " Why did you wave it so many times?" I told him the truth that I am not usually the driver and that I had never waved my own card through before - he was the biggest ASS to me, I felt totally embarassed and belittled. Next time, I will just go through reg line or Peach Arch. Bad experience now with Truck Crossing Nexus going home. We prolly got the same guy that hates his job and is just waiting to retire.
Side note: bf has brought over 6 packs once or twice, no probs. Bro has bought over case of Costco Mingler, no probs. Also, cousin lives right on 0 Avenue right by the border and her hubby takes both cars for fill-ups and bring over 6 packs ALL the time, luck of the draw of the border agent.

Well, I just got back from a trip to Blaine which then turned out to be a trip to Bellingham, LOL. I got an e-mail from 24/7 shipping that a package had come in. They hold parcels for up to 7 days. I cannot go for a few days, so today was the only day I could go. Lineups were pretty brutal all day today. It went down to 5/10 minutes heading south at around 7:30 pm. I didn't pay too much attention about getting back. The lineups were an hour and a half heading back into Canada at 8:00 pm. WTF? I hate line ups, so I decided to head down to Ferndale, Wa. Always wanted to go to a Sonic drive in, but never had a chance to. Well, it was a pretty good experience. Pretty good food for cheap. Half price mikshakes after 8 pm and a good dollar menu to boot. It's an old school drive in type of place. I even saw a chick on roller skates serving customers. You drive up to these stalls just like the old A&W drive ins used to be - press button on board and order your stuff.
After wife and I finished eating, we listened to AM 730 to find out the line ups were still over an hour. Fricken hell.......... I punch in casinos into the GPS and Silver Reef comes up. Only 7km away. Not bad, so I go there. It's not a bad casino at all. The first time I went there, the place looked pretty crappy, but this time it was a lot nicer (maybe because it was night time, hee hee). It just happened to be seniors day, LOL. Bonus points for slot play. I hung out till 10:30ish and checked Am 730 again. Still over an hour line up.
Ended up at Wal Mart in Bellingham since it's open 24 hours. At 12:30 border lineups were down to 5 minutes. By the time I got to Peace Arch, five lanes were open with one car in three of the lanes.
Note to self..........going down on a Monday = no damn good. Rainy Days and Mondays Always Get Me Down (Karen Carpenter, god bless her soul).
Anyway, yeah, if you've never been to a Sonic, there's one in Ferndale. Take Main Street Exit off I5 and turn right, you'll see it on the left hand side.
Sonic, America's Drive-In | This Is How You Sonic (http://www.sonicdrivein.com/)
MG1: Get the Silver Reef Player's Card next time - IIRC you get $5 Match Slot and Table Play plus $5 to spend at the Coffee Bar. Also, once a year (supposed to be on your birthday) you get a free dinner buffet.
Also, free bottle(s) of H20 at any bar, also $5 popcorn shrimp IIRC until like 9-10pm. :)

On the way back at Peace Arch - around 5:30 pm, two car wait with 4 lanes open. I guess I hit the borders at the right times.
Meanwhile, at the gas front, it was $3.019/gal. at Costco, Bellingham.

Yep I use it as my primary parcel pickup source. The staff is friendly and is great that they are open 24/7 for smaller parcels. Price i think is only slightly higher than most of the other places.

All the time - would recommend.
They are however, a little more strict on holding times, and a tad more expensive.
Still, the convenience of being able to go whenever I want is worth it. Big items are a bit of a hassle though.

^But they do have a lot of lockers in different sizes to accommodate parcels of different sizes. They also inform you the status of your parcel once they received it with emails and txts.
I ordered my lip kit and shipped it there and asked them to put it inside the storage room. It wasn't available but they told me my holding time won't start until they put my kit in there.

Used it for the first time last Saturday. Priced the same as Blaine Enterprises, which I used predominantly before.
The whole set-up is really neat- just punch in your code twice and you have your stuff! They also have box recycling on site if you don't want to take the boxes with you. I'll be using it from now on as it's just more convenient.

RIFD line just let's EDL users scan their cards in so the border guard can process them a bit faster. Really useful if the line is long since they just verify the cards, ask you the usual (and I noticed), briefer questions, and send you on your way.

Thanks guys. I look forward to using them.
Point Roberts is the same distance for me but the border sucks. I was on my bike in the Nexus lane once in the summer and the regular line moved 3-4 cars for every 1 in my lane.
Plus The Letter Carrier charges $3.75 per small package now.
The fact that the the gas is cheaper in Blaine than Point Roberts and you can pick up your package anytime is really nice.

According to a few FB posts on my wall, the wait yesterday around 8pm was 5 mins as well. That's in stark contrast to yesterday morning, which at 7am was already north of 25 mins.
I didn't see any deals that just screamed "I have to line up at the store". I'm not one to line up for anything but the absolute best can't miss deals, so that might have something to do with it. So went down last night to the outlets because my GF and her sister wanted to go. Crossed over around 11pm, crossing was a breeze. As for the outlets, the lines were long but bearable. I let my gf and her sister go to whatever shops they wanted to check out so I walked around checked a few places because I wasn't really looking for anything particular, I ended up picking up a few things from RL.
On the way back we stopped over at Kohl's and Walmart, not a huge rush. We crossed back into Canada around 10am which was a breeze.

It was a long-enough time ago imo. 90s and 2000s babies will never know, like they'll never know about CRT televisions and dial-up. But 65 cents was almost 15 years ago.
Local retailers are likely licking their chops at the dropping dollar. Less pressure to drop their domestic prices to keep shoppers locally. Paying what would amount to be a 15% "upcharge" for US goods would need the particular items to be steals before even thinking about putting them in an online cart. Doubly worse if you get taxed at the border.

This was on an episode of Border Security. Canadian traveller coming back into Canada was asked to provide the password to access his laptop and he refused, demanding to see where it says he has to provide his password. Border guys presented him with the law that says you have to provide access, so I assume you'd have to unlock your phone if asked.

To my understanding, you have to unlock your phone when asked to by a border guard for "national security" reasons.
But you do not have to do it for police when you are being questioned as you have a higher expectation of privacy as it's a "mini computer". However they can still go through your phone if it does not have a passcode since the data in the phone is now readily available to anyone.

Should you refuse to give your password to the border officer, it raises possible suspicion on what you are hiding from them. They have the option to seize your device, and good luck trying to get it back. It will be a lengthy process.

They can search, but one is not obligated to unlock one's cellphone. If your cell has no lock, then yes, they can check it without warrant.
If one doesn't cooperate, he won't have a very pleasant day, but AFAIK, one is not obligated to disclose anything as it may be against Canada's charters of rights and freedoms. (11c... similar to the 5th in US).
From my readings of the custom act, (after watching that CBSA show a lot) I think the wording on it is quite ambiguous. But I doubt CBSA is willing to take this to court (unless you are a known criminal). Since if they lose, they will lose all future capabilities to scare people into cooperating to obtain stuff they are not entitled legally. (But it becomes legal once you cooperate)

IAmA former BSO for the Canada Border Services Agency, AMaA! : canada (http://www.reddit.com/r/canada/comments/1ml38m/iama_former_bso_for_the_canada_border_services/)
Finally, if you have any electronics on you, CBSA has full authority (no warrant needed) to search the entire contents of your phone/laptop/ipad/etc. So someone can read everything on your devices. Oh, and if you want to be a smartass and encrypt it - they can both retain the device until such time as you give the password, AND take you to court to compel you to tell the password (note, the right against self incrimination would NOT apply).

They can withheld the device if you don't give the password. But AFAIK, there hasn't been any case in court that required one to give out the password. And the items would have to be returned at some point as it's personal property.
Again as I said before, the wordings on Customs act is ambiguos. Hence allowing CBSA to exercise things that maybe beyond the boundary as the line is not clearly drawn. But if one insists (say a person with highly confidential information in his posession), I am not sure CBSA is willing to go to court to have the actual line drawn by court (as it might not play in their favor) unless you have the background.

If I happen to be in the nearby area, I would still fill up my tank in the US. But as far as cross border shopping is concerned, be it done physically or online, I can no longer justify buying from the US. And the real shxtty thing is, for some reason, I just had to come across this glut of stuff that I wouldn't think twice and buy had the exchange rate been close to parity...

Bellingham Costco was abandoned today. I actually saw five tables at the deli completely empty. There was no line up at the pumps, either and this was at 4:00 pm.

Bellingham will be a ghost town if the exchange rate falls some more.

6-8 months from submission to approval...longer if you have multiple convictions.
$585 USD fee for waiver application/submission
first one is only 1yr..after that, you can 'ask' for 3yrs or 5yrs on your renewal.
there are also other fees:
-court documents
-RCMP fingerprinting
I helped someone complete this and it is a bit exhaustive but he got approved and is up for renewal soon...and yes, the renewal is the exact same procedure with same fees involved.

Fricken hell.......... exchange rate continues to drop. It is now at 91....... please don't go into hte 80's.
Why oh why did I not convert some CAD to USD back when our dollar was above par? I thought I had learned my lesson from 35 years ago, LOL.

Analysts are predicting .85 then stabilizing at .92 for 2014.
I'm curious about the effects on border-towns in the US. Will it shutter all those mail centers? Bellingham Costco and the Airport were planning expansions this year but will it be cancelled. Poor guy who built that giant La Quinta hotel across from the airport.

My NEXUS appointment for the interview is in march at Blaine. I was wondering if the interview place is actually the border crossing office? Will there be parking? Also is there another interview on Canadian side at yvr, or there is just 1 interview, but people can choose to do it at YVR?

is much easier to do it at YVR. I just park my car at riverrock and skytrain over.

When I was scheduling, it was either at Blaine in March or at YVR in June.

You should have an address for it when you're viewing your appointment time from the website and I'm sure once you're there you can ask around or find signs. CBSA will be there on site or they will send you back to the Canadian side but note that you probably won't be able to get your retina scan unless you're at YVR.

You'll have to cross the border, take the first right on the overpass you go up and then another right to get back to the border office. Yes there is parking there. There's only one interview just two different locations to do it

Does that means i will end up scheduling a YVR appointment anyways? Or let say I passed the interview in Blaine, then, I am allow to cut in lines to get my retina scanned first(have priority) in YVR?
Then after I shall have my NEXUS roughly 10 business days? So pretty much no delay, maybe 1 day (day after interview to get retina scanned in YVR)

You'll only really need to retina scan if you do air crossings and not land crossings. This is a by-pass/express line for security at airports to cross from Canada to US or vice versa. This will be seldom by used most people.
As for priority, I have absolutely no idea as I did my interview at YVR. Your wait time, should you be approved, to get your nexus card should be about a week or less.

The retina scan is done by the receptionist at the front desk for the YVR Nexus office. So yes, you can do your interview at Blaine and then go to YVR for the retina scan, you wouldn't need to schedule an interview for the retina scan.
A year ago today, the Canadian buck was worth more than the American buck. Close to 1.02.
All time high:
November 7th, 2007
Canadian Loonie was worth 1.1030 USD
All time low:
January 21, 2002
American Dollar = 0.6179 Canadian

When you go back at the truck crossing, check how big (or small) the iris scan line up is....might be free from any lineups

FYI -
i was looking at the GOES website online and I found out they opened a new interview premise at Canada Place. It must be fairly new as the address is not posted on the website but the interview dates are as early as January 20th. For those of you on the 6 months wait..it may be time to reschedule your interview!

^Wow thanks so much! I was going to go March 9th at Blaine, but this makes everything so much easier.
If you sign up for a spot here, does the letter confirming your appointment say the address? I'm assuming it's where the cruise ships dock, but I wouldn't know where to go to find the NEXUS office.

I would check back later in the week to see if the website is updated. Worst comes to worst..call another enrollment office (YVR) and see if they can give you more information.

I am going to just check back until they post an address and location. I have a pretty good interview date for blaine (march 3rd, I think), and don't want to lose it if the canada place one falls through.
Pretty sure I can still get an earlier date if I waited.

^That's probably a good idea.
Though I remember when the Downtown Vancouver one was posted. It was something like "Downtown Vancouver Location A" for a while before getting updated with the Dunsmuir address. It's somewhere in the NEXUS thread here.
But March 3 (and 9th for me) is pretty close already to risk having Canada place fall through. You would think that if it did, they would reschedule you at the exact same time for another location.
Wow. At Costco on willingdon ave. the place is jam packed. Way more than usual. People are buying here now, I guess. Good for our economy.
