Dont worry I wish I was back in japan too. Although i didnt get to snowboard there I definitely wish I was there right now. And vancouver's local mountains are super shitty right now.. I only went to cypress once, did one run.... And went home. It wasnt worth it.

Went to cypress today from 3 to 8ish.
Snow ain't too bad, got some ice patches later in the night. But as pointed out earlier, not a lot of variety; basically 2 runs open, not counting the one that splits off from the main green one. But it was basically non-stop, there was virtually no wait time at the lift.

But damn, there are so many new people. Numerous time there were 4 to 6 people sitting in the middle of a narrow section of a run side by side wtf. :heckno: I was temped to play a game of Red Rover or whatever that shit in elementary school was called.

just a little bit of advice, we were all newbs once. So if you're in a situation where you have to avoid people, just give them a little friendly "could you move to the side of the run" or something along those lines.

It's the same as someone highbeaming you if you're impeding traffic in the fast lane. All it [normally] takes is a little friendly nudge, and chances are they'll know for next time.

It's frustrating, we've all experienced it, but provided we all can work together to get everyone in the same space, it makes for a more enjoyable experience.

i know only a few of you remember the season of 98/99 [westopher might] Back when there weren't any snowguns/snowmaking at cypress, and all the chairs were fixed SLOW doubles

But it was the same type of season.

LATE LATE start, minimal december snowfall, but the season DID work out.

Typically, with this type of late start, it will lead to a later running winter and a later hitting summer leading up to a heavy winter the year later.

it's the la nina, el nino cycle.

It will snow guys, just be patient

Was up at whistler this weekend and came back today, there was some good riding to be had thanks to the fact that it snowed almost 15cm on thursday night.

Today was complete crap though, it was raining hard in the village still raining pretty far up past midstation on the hill.

From the pictures I got sent by a friend, it does not look like any of the 3 local mountains are worth riding right now. LOL.

I'm thinking of hitting up cypress this friday with a couple of friends... think it's worth it? I mean tickets are only 32$ and from what's been said, it seems like the line up time is pretty short so you can get a lot of runs in.

Only thing I'm worried about is scratching up my new board I got this weekend. Is there a lot of bare patches on the runs?

heisenberg
12-23-2013, 09:07 PM
just got back a couple of hours ago. a green and blue open nothing fancy. big patches of slushy water near the beginning of the green. wasnt raining, but it was windy as fuck. this is my second season boarding. i stayed on the same run practising my jumps and stuff. overall it wasnt too bad in my opinion. i paid 13$ with the deal of the day hehe.

I haven't checked Craigslist prices but if you or someone you know has a BCAA you can get it through them for 25% off. A full day pass turnabout to be about the same price as if you owned a gold card at cypress. But this way you don't have to own a gold card.

Yea... I am pretty sure all season is fine going up whistler
But I was told there are often roadblock setup to check for snowtire and they will turn your vehicle back if you don't have snowtire (even if the road is clear)

sometimes there are. When you rent your car you can ask for a car with snowtires, usually its $5-$10/day extra (Budget car rental usually has snowies on a few cars)

I've been going back and forth to whistler for a few years now, I haven't run into a roadblock yet. I usually head up there on M+S tires (all season, not winter) and I'm fine ... i do keep chains in my trunk just in case, but to be honest I only have them so they don't tell me to turn around and GTFO

A couple years ago I made it to whistler in the middle of a snowstorm in a rental FWD Kia Rondo with shitty all seasons -- I didn't get stuck until I was pulling into my hotel

anyone here have experience driving a rear wheel drive with snow tires going to Big White? since the snow conditions look ugly in the usual mountains im thinking of an alternative.

A few sections where it's fairly steep with a S curve

Load extra weight in the rear and have a few people ready to push and you should be ok if there is a lot of snow

I've been a few times and usually it was plowed....had a few times where it wasn't and I would have gotten stuck without 4wd

saveth
01-02-2014, 05:24 PM
the resorts in bc usually do a really good job plowing the roads in and out of the mountains.

I just drove into whistler earlier and it was snowing pretty hard. They expect about 17cm of snow and blue skys tommorow, so tommorow should be an awesome day.

saveth
01-03-2014, 02:07 PM
Today was good until about too and the lower half of the mountain (if open) was getting a little icy. Tommorow should be a decent day if you know where to go.

The only downside was it was quite busy today from 10-2. So tommorow should be about the same if not worse. If anyone is going to be here tommorow I'll do a late morning update to let you know where the snow is really nice. If not then I wont

Snow was good today at cypress :)

DON'T go out of bounds! I saw a cypress employee wait at the bottom of Horizon/Rainbow for riders who deliberately go out of bounds. Outcome, he took their passes away.

Definitely! Most fun I've probably had was the time we all went and had like 4 GoPros between maybe 6 people, haha.

At this time of year, factoring the amount of snow we have been getting, the roads to cypress should be all clear as they usually are. As for the parking lot, I'm going to guess it is either clear or just a light dusting.

Sweet, going up there tmr 630am leaving vancouver. Hoping weather is good, how was it today if I may ask (rain/cloud coverage/visibility)? I generally stay above the gondolas during the day until I'm done boarding. We'd ride up the blackbomb gondola and never go below 2nd base(i think thats what its called) until we are on our final run to the village to end the day. I find the village and creekside are the longest waits, although I never ever go down to creekside.

Craigslist? Sportchek? Literally anywhere that sells snowboard equipment?

EDIT: Westopher got there first...

RE-EDIT: Oh and westopher alpine on blackcomb was closed all day long, highest open chair was jersey cream, 7th was closed as well.

Park's are a mess and probable will be for a couple days as the last dump of snow screwed with everything.

Snow was great today, but it was easily one of the busiest days for lifts and lineups I have ever seen at whistler, and that is saying a lot because I am there really regularly.

Got there at about 9:15am and the line for the blackcomb gondola went back through the village and wrapped around showcase. It was nuts.

Really depends on the winds. I know for sure they are gonna want to open it for weekend crowds. They will be doing everything they can to get it open for sure, but if its gusting 80-100 like forecasted, it wont be safe to get patrollers bombing up there. Even with all the bomb trams and such its gonna be sketch as fuck.

I've been stuck on the 7th heaven lift one time a couple of years ago. We were mid way up the lift and then there was a complete white out. They stopped the lift for around 10 minutes but it seemed like a lifetime(long time), lol. I couldn't even see my own hands in front of my face, everything was white. I could hear the voices of my friends next to me but couldnt see them. Felt like I was dying and going to heaven or something. They finally got us off and closed the lift once the last guys were off it. Pretty interesting experience to say the least.

EDIT: oh yea and on our way down, visibility was shit. could barely see 3 feet in front of you. I remember going down the green run at the first part of 7th heaven and i thought i had stopped but i was actually slowly sliding forward. ended up dropping a foot off of the main path into pow, face planted and all, lol

Huh? When and where did you go?

Line ups for every lift on blackcomb until about 2PM were in excess of 30 min. I rode crystal chair twice and it took almost 1 hour the first time and 30min the second time.

After about 2PM Jersey was down to a 5-10min wait and solar coaster and excelerator were down to about the same.

On saturday it was snowing in the village as well, however the snow was wet, but anything up past midstation was just good fluffy snow.

Alpine will be epic whenever they decide to open it...

Was up Saturday. Morning Creekside line started at 7AM, so they waited an hour and a half to get first runs. I lineup'd at 8:30 and got on at 9:15. Big Red had only about a 10 minute wait once you got off the Creekside lift which was not bad. I rode Fran'z chair the whole day. No wait which was great and plenty of powder through the trees until about 1PM and then it get snowed out.

Everyones definitions are a little different. Theoretically anything above midstation on either mountain is alpine.

But in this scenario, when you are seeing large volume chairlifts like Harmony, symphony, 7th, glacier, peak, etc. closed I really do not count that as the alpine being open...

A couple of years ago we had a group of 6 or so riding together, while another 2 or so were newer and did other stuff. During our lunch break there was at least 10 of us from RS. All in all, I think it was great fun for everyone.

Most likely this will occur on a Saturday or Sunday at CYPRESS MOUNTAIN. Please state which days you are free. Once we get a good list going and the weather looks promising, we can pick a specific day.

T-33 into Humpty Dumpty into Horizons had a few brown spots (most of which are boulders with dirt) and lots of rock scattered throughout the run. At some points everyone was funneled to the left side of the run because there was so much earth/rock exposure. Its to that point for me too man. I'm sick of the "it will get better, there is still so much season left!" comments. The fact is, april runs on the seasons leftovers, January doesn't have anything in the long term forecast, and that leaves us with february/march and we don't even have a fucking base yet. If it dumps a ton in february that can leave us with the last week or 2 of feb and any snow we get in March, which is historically a great month. So basically best case scenario we get 1-1.5 months of some quality pow days. Whistler might not even be able to run the glacier this year over the summer?

Pretty much bang on.

Looking at the long term January is a write off. April will be worthless this year as well because even if it does dump 5+ft in feb and march we still won't have a nice base for it to settle onto. So at this point nothing will correct the situation for good spring boarding.

Best case scenario is that we get a few decent dumps in february and it stays somewhat colder than average in march and they can winch out all the runs and some good groomer days/park days can be had.

If it we don't see a turnaround within the first couple weeks of february, this season is for sure over. There will be no way to recover from the situation in the latter half of february or march without some sort of record setting weather phenomenon.

Sunpeaks had less snow than previous years when I was there earlier in mid Dec. But like everyone said, it's still 100000000x better than local mountains.

Was up on cypress last Thursday after work, the parking lot felt colder than the slopes; probably due to the inversion?

Heading to big white tomorrow. Hope its not a sheet of ice. Probably just spend the day in the park if its sunny. I just know its gonna suck, its just a matter of how bad. At least it will be better than here and be a trip out of Van.

I've got friends up there right now and say the conditions are decent. Its blue skys right now.

I'll be up there next tuesday so hopefully the mountain gets some new snow.

It was snowing and today was much better. It needs some more snow to settle to cover up the layer of ice (literally hard enough that if you shot at it with a 9mm it would bounce back at you) but there was probably 5-7cm of fresh today to soften the blow. I fell pretty hard on one of the big jumps yesterday after they opened up and I'm really feeling it today.

Prepping for my trip to revelstoke in feb

Anyone have a recommendation for a snowboard tune up place? Planing for a full package sort of thing as I want it to be killer on my trip.

All i see on CL are these

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rds/sks/4297620191.html
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pml/spo/4294083678.html

Might the VST or Ladner, but rather go to a place someone can vouch for.

If it's super cold this week, apparently supposed to get to -11, will we see snow up high? And if so quite a bit I hope

It looks like it'll be dry till Saturday. Then we have a big system coming in. I hope the freezing level stays low, because it's going to be fricking EPIC if it does!

Going to Seymour tomorrow to teach some friends how to ski.
Will report.

edit: not too shabby.
A little icey, but nothing to complain about - especially for the green runs. Blues are ok. Didn't try black.

Last year whistler has 50% off on family day and it wasn't busy. I don't think it wit willl be like that this year. I'm up at big white right now and a lot of the residences in big white are occupied for this weekend. I'm back in town tommorow so I may give whistler or one of the local mountains a try since its suppose to dump snow.

Update for bigwhite:
I would classify it as packed powder. Its not icy but its still an enjoyable time. If anyone wants an update in the morning let me know and I'll post one, otherwise I'm on my way back to the gvrd in the afternoon

I've been to the 24/7 grouse during the Olympics and swore to never go again. I can't justify paying to wait in a lift line for 10 minutes to ride on that mountain.

I haven't been back since the first one so I was wondering if its better or worse then the first time I went at 2 am expecting no lines.

Its more fun to just go up and hang out/have a few beers. We took up some flasks and rode park during sunrise a few years ago. It was when I had a seasons pass there though when I first moved to Vancouver. Since the olympics isn't, um, in vancouver this time, you probably won't be dealing with the same lineups. Van was kinda busier then.

Was up whistler today. Found some pow in some spots. Had to pay attention to where the wind blew last night though. The jump line on the right side of HL park on blackcomb was fucking SICK though. Only hit the top two since I couldn't get enough speed for the bottom through the sluff but they were perfect sizes, nice and kicky takeoffs and most importantly nice safe long steep landings.

I did a couple days at revelstoke for a couple days this year before Christmas. It was my first time up on that hill. I liked it, good variety of terrain, no line ups. Perfect. At that time they needed a bit more snow, although I heard it dumped after I left which is typical.
