Super excited about snowboarding season! First time season pass holder. Planning to go 20+ days if my school and work schedule works out.
I didn't get a chance to ride with you guys last season.. So let's plan more meets this year!

I got all my gear ready from last year, just might need some new boots and goggles. (My boa loosens up just half way down the mountain..) Are all boa's like that? Should I get one with a double boa system? Or do you guys recommend laces?

Anyone have a Cypress pass already?

you didn't keep the original thread titles we had going even though it was just two years, should be winter thirteen winter fourteen :troll:

but once again I can't wait for the season to start. I just picked up a new board for super cheap and I'm excited to use it. Last season I got in around 25+ days, this season I'm hoping to get in way more than that, since I just graduated and don't have to deal with hw and tests anymore. Although I'm not entirely sure which mountain I'll be on; it's either gonna be Seymour or Cypress.

Can't give any advice or help on the boots though. I'm pretty clueless in that area lol. If no one has any advice here, I'm sure if you ask on the snowboarding forums someone will definitely help you there.

Man I barely get in like 10 days. That's why I want a seasons pass so bad but I know it won't be worth it yet :( got a helmet and most of my stuff from last year. Thinking of new goggles tho.. Maybe ones that will allow me to wear my glasses at same time as I don't wanna get contacts since I hate poking myself lol

Can't wait for this season as well. Anyone have an old board but reliable they'd like to sell?

Can't wait to use the Ruroc helmet I bought at the end of last season. Also bought a silver season pass with Cypress. For those wanting to save, check Craigslist for group codes on season passes for Cypress. Saved me at least $120 with this group buy.

So that was the helmet I saw last season. Some chick was wearing it and I heard a little kid say it was super cool out loud haha and I gotta admit he was right. Had no idea it was 300+ bucks though.

you mean like this? i got mine last season. they have MANY discount codes every couple weeks / months. jumped on it when they had a 30% off last season.
the only thing i don't like about it is that the texture of the helmet is a bit rough, so I can't mount my gopro unless i sand down the area.

These aren't really local but Ski, Snowboard, Wakeboard, Skateboard & the Freshest Clothes | evo (http://www.evo.com) has last years inventory on sale, and maybe you can find cheaper stuff if you go a year older. There's also the whistler turkey sale which happens in October around thanksgiving. I think it's the 11-14 according to some whistler event website.

Speaking of whistler, they just got some snow. :fullofwin:

I just booked a good 4 nights for the pirce of 3 deal for Sunpeaks, it's been advertised on their website. 5 days 4 nights accomodation at Delta Sunpeaks for the price of 3, the deal also includes 2 adult lift tickets for 4 days.

Checked the same deal on Delta's website and it's actuallyl cheaper so I booked it on Delta's website.

The total came to be around $670 (somewhere around there), so pretty much they're giving you the lift tickets for free. Will be driving up there, took Greyhound and shuttle last year and it was pretty expensive.

If you're buying online I'd check DogFunk/The-House first because they don't tax you if you ship to Pt Roberts. If they don't have stock then EVO/backcountry/REI

And thanks sonick I'm gonna check out that sample sale for sure! The Burton/Anon one last week was so weak.. They had a bunch of used stuff for higher than online prices. Looking to get some new goggles. It would be sick if they had I/OX's but I doubt it :okay:

I'd say go laces. I know a few people who have had issues with the boa system breaking or getting loose. I use laces and love them, went with laces on the recommendation of someone who has been boarding for 10+ years.

Went in search for Smith I/OX goggles and boots. It was 10% off + the $20 coupon when spending over $99 which ends up to be $180 with tax. So I think I'm going to get last year's on ebay for $120.
My friends went for bindings they didn't have sizes. Boards-wise they didn't have too much on sale and @only 40% they weren't out of the world deals that I would jump on right away. We all left empty handed. Had some free beers and waffles though LOL

I ended up finding some Burton Cartels for my friend online for $143 just now. I bought the 2013 K2 Darko's online as well. They've been getting really good reviews all over the place. They have an internal BOA system for the liner and laces on the exterior. Hopefully this doesn't fail on me..

Yeah I got my first board off craigslist. Board and binding combo for like 240. Board was a few years old but was in excellent condition. Bindings wrre scuffed a bit but what do you expect? Boots just find something that's comfortable. There's a friends and family sale at spark chek right now. Print out the coupon and get 25% off or wait till the next warehouse sale in like 2 weeks. But you gotta find a good jacket and pants too. Its not fun if you're cold.

ss6o4 the regular I/OX will fit glasses as well.

As for buffwear if you double layer over your mouth it doesn't seem to breathe so well so it will get wet due to condensation. One layer over the mouth area seems to work much better.

For those that are new and gone a few times and ready to buy your own gear, if you're confident with your learning speed, don't buy anything too entry level.
I just started last season and already kicking myself a bit. Because I want to upgrade, except it seems dumb to do so after dropping $450 on new gear, used only about 10 times.

But my gear feels way too soft for all-mountain. My bindings come loose occasionally (as in a strap could literally fall off due to bad screws), and my boots don't seem to hold out water at all. I always end up with wet socks, which I don't think is normal. I went with a shorter rocker board for control thinking it will help me learn carving cause the tips won't catch as easily. But when I'm trying to go faster, it seems a bit unstable.

It's not a terrible set up, but I do regret a bit for not spending maybe another $100 overall to get something better...

The only thing I would suggest buying new are boots. Arguably, they are what matters most if you will have comfortable ride or not. You want to break these in yourself; don't buy used.

Gear you could buy nearly new (ridden 4-10 times,) off CL/privately; it won't make a big difference in how your board handles compared to a brand spanking new deck. And you'll save yourself at least $100 if you opt for a board/dings combo which could contribute to different snow attire.

ziggyx

+1 on the boots. Spend your money there and make sure you get good boots that fit you properly. Having shitty boots will ruin your time up on the mountain.

My helmet's decent. "Knock on wood", never really needed it yet.
My board's a "camrocker" (camber in middle, rocker tips).

I want stiffer bindings, but I might upgrade my boots instead if water keeps getting in.
The very last time I used them last season, I sprayed Scotchgard all over the lower portion of the boots and my feet stayed dry.
But it was also quite icy, so I'm not sure if it was because of my spray or because it was just dryer than usual.

I'll experiment some more this season.

Ewwww.
I'm not sure what boots you have, but I would HATE snowboarding with wet boots.
I am on my 3rd pair of Salomon boots, love them and my boots have stayed bone dry.

For boots, spend the money, spend lots and lots on your boots and you'll love boarding. Good boots are amazing.
And don't buy them too loose, they will pack out over time, and your feet kinda shrink throughout from the compression of the laces.

I'm using the Forum Fastplant.
I'm not sure how the water is getting in though. Cause there's no way it's getting in from the top as I have my gaiter sealing the boot.

Maybe the water's seeping through my boots cause the material isn't waterproof enough.... or is it just my sweat??? :suspicious::suspicious: lol...

Wow this thread started early! Summer didn't even technically end when this started.

And yes, the thread titles were something I've conjured up a while ago. oh well. the flame has been passed onto some other radtacular dude.

No new gear for me this year. Focusing too much on my career and spending a heap on tools instead.

however i might hit up a few of my friends that still work in the industry for some knick knacks. you know the basics that we could all use more of.

PS, i'm heading to baker tomorrow in the morning to do some preseason hiking and jumping with a few homeys. Will take some photos of the conditions, provided they're decent.

Needing a new jacket this year and maybe some pants.

Picked up a new SkateBanana right before my last day this past winter along with some union force bindings, super stoked to ride this setup more this year. I was hesitant moving from a camber board to a reverse camber as I did not like the last reverse camber board I had. But the skatebanana is flawless, I was launching myself off the 40' booters at blackcomb no problem.

EDIT: still contemplating the student pass for whistler, but I don't want to be tied down to a mountain especially one thats 2 hours away. but for $500 i might have to just suck it up, and pay whenever I want to go to grouse or cypress.

You ever ride HL park? I miss riding that every sunny non-pow day for 2 years. Its so scary stepping in there if you only ride it a couple times a season though. Whistler park is the place to be for old farts like me now if there hasn't been a dump. I picked up a seymour pass this year, and its a great place to ride for us ex-park rats. Grouse's park is shit, and cypress park doesn't exist. I would save your money you'd spend on a whistler student pass and go ride 10 days at baker for that price. It will change the way you see the mountain. If I'm riding city shit I likely wont leave the park, but if there is real terrain, searching for snow is a lot more interesting.

I pay and ride the HL park a couple times a season, I'm not as crazy as the guys that are normally in there but its good fun.

Grouse's park has been better in recent years, the jump line is the best on the north shore for 40'+ jumps.

Cypress had a good setup last year, after all the season ticket holders complained heavily over their shitty park setup over the couple seasons before that (this is why they moved it from slow tiny chair). I am hoping they can continue the improvements this year.

I honestly have a distaste for seymour, but its fine as a mountain.

I used to work at cypress for about 5 years, and during that time period I visited like every moutain in BC and washington, even went out east and rode in utah (brighton was awesome). Baker was really good, but if you know whistler as well as I do, there really is nothing like it.

Over the past 5 years I have had a multitude of boards, my most used board was a camber forum youngblood. In fact I still have this board, and used it consistently right up until I got my skatebanana.

I used a K2 parkstar for a bit, not a terrible board, but certainly not something I want to be taking off the big hits. Perfectly fine board for mid winter jibbing sessions.

Had a 162 Burton Custom X with EST bindings, terrible system and I am overall not a fan of burton gear. I bought this board for powder days, so I bought it a good deal taller than my other boards, but unfortunately the EST system is such a load of non-sense that riding this board even down basic groomers was a chore.

The last board I had for an extended period of time was a bataleon goliath. This was also a very good board for me, but unfortunately did not hold up very well, partially due to abuse, partially because I believe the board is pretty fragile. Edge started to tear up, and core shots are way to easy.

Like I said I love my skatebanana, it is the perfect all round board for me, and since I just pick up the same board and ride it day-in day-out regardless of conditions it is exactly what I need.

We should meet up some day at Baker or whistler man, I bet we could get some good laps in. Charging off natural stuff and using the whole mountain is so satisfying and its like learning snowboarding all over again with the progression that comes with it. It feels like there is such a vast array of things to learn behind it, and endless creativity compared to park riding.

What's Baker like?
Grouse and Cyprus are usually pretty bleh with subpar weather conditions.
It's like visibility or icy, pick one. :(

Side note: Anybody still looking for a board?
Got a practically brand new Salomon Prospect 150 I'm willing to part with.
I probably used it for 2 days and went back to my bigger board.

Baker has the highest average snowfall in the world
It holds the record for the most snow ever recorded anywhere in one season (1120 inches or 95 feet.)
Its steep, rugged, never busy, hard to get to (to an extent) and has tons of easily accessible backcountry.
In short, Mt. baker is heaven.

I agree, but they have a long ways to go from a dusting of snow, to being able to open.

In other news Whistler got pounded the last little bit, they are well on track for an early opening...

I picked up my new pants and new jacket a couple days ago, as well as a new AirHole Balaclava. Starting to get real antsy to get out there.

Last couple items I need for this upcoming season is a complete new UA base layer, I usually rock the cold gear compression fit turtle neck with some of their base gear long johns. Keep me nice and toasty on those cold POW days.

Go look at Smith Optics.

They make the best fitting over the glasses goggles ever.

They also have options for fan controlled condensation built into their frames.

The I/OX RX/over the glasses goggle is identical to the regular I/OX just slightly thicker frame for accommodation of glasses underneath.

Offered with or without Turbo fan.

Contacts will make snowboarding way better then having goggles over your glasses.
Not to mention you can bail hard enough and have your goggles and glasses come off at the same time and losing them. You also have a very shitty view with glasses on.
It's hard enough to find goggles with a very wide vision with an unobstructed view.

I'm assuming you're at the intermediate level of snowboarding since you've been going for 4 seasons now. I think at that point there's really no right or wrong on what kind of board, bindings and boots you want. It just comes down to what you want and how much you can afford. Everyone has their own personal preferences on what kind of riding they want to do, whether it's mainly terrain parks, back country, etc.

But if you do want reviews on the equipment you can probably find some reviews over on the snowboardingforum.

1. Where are you going to ride?
2. What type of riding are you doing mainly (Park, Freeride, all mountain?)
3. How heavy are you and how tall? (sorry for getting personal but I am a really light dude and people never understood some of my board purchases until they realized I am really skinny for my height)

There is a right and a wrong in gear decisions.

you wouldn't place a beginner on a stiff board, both lateral and torsional. They'd hate it. A beginner wouldn't be able to take advantage of the contact points and wouldn't even be able to put the board on edge without wearing themselves out.

I see it all too often.

People making wrong decisions on boards, they think it's the best board, because it's the most money. Where in fact, they could enjoy the sport and spend less of their hard earned money on a less costly board and actually take advantage of the surroundings they choose to ride on.

The same goes for boots... but that's not as noticeable.

The board is the number one thing that people make wrong decisions on, and it's really because of media and peer pressure. just because your friend or a pro rider is using it, doesn't mean that you'll be able to use it as well.

Bottom line, every snowboard has a suitable weight range. It's based on YOU. The weight range provides you with flex and pop. Both are different in regards to skis and snowboards.

And when you get better and better, you get stronger and stronger. Thus you can go outside your weight range to a board that seemingly is more suitable for a heavier rider.

race boards, and even half pipe boards are always stiffer in regards to flex because they do need the stability for speed, and in the case of half pipe riding, the ability for stability in landing big airs.

Do your research and if it comes down to it, demo as much gear as much as possible. You'll find each board will react differently to the exact same terrain.

My mistake, I assumed he had an idea of what he was looking for considering he is 4 seasons in. I was gonna suggest to demo or try some boards as well.

Yes, I'm an intermediate rider and can do green and blue runs no problem. I don't plan on doing tricks, going off the half pipes, or terrain parks anytime soon. I'd say I mainly will just go downhill with a lot of carving and occasionally hop off a few baby ramps.

I'm 5'6 145lbs. Size 8 goofy. I've owned a 151cm board which worked fine for me but I'm going to need to upgrade it. Based on the inventory on the SportChek website, what can you guys recommend me?

Make a list of all the boards you want to use, and read as many biased [and yes i mean biased] opinions on them.

Google it, watch youtube reviews on it, and just read up on who's riding them.

I say biased opinions, because the reviewer will always have a preference towards a certain type, style, brand, and riding terrain. They will probably love brand x over brand y for some reason.

Now, it's not to say that they won't provide you with information that you'll find suitable, it's just their way of telling the mass majority how THEY find the snowboard.

I could tell you how I find a snowboard, but i'll know for a fact that i won't replicate your mistakes, or won't replicate your riding ability. i'll just tell you how i've found it to handle, and apply to the terrain i've been riding, on that particular day.

However, your particular package choice is wise.

You've chosen an above average snowboard to use, coupled with a very solid set of bindings. However, my only offer of advice on the package is on the boots. Reason being, is my opinion on how you should weigh your purchase, to which I would strongly urge being based around footwear. Spend a wee bit higher than you anticipated, or at least spend more time fitting yourself into as many boots as possible for the one's that provide the best support, and the BEST comfort.

your feet will thank you.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look up more reviews and update you guys on what I get. I was under the impression that all entry level gear (like the ones I've chosen) don't vary much in terms of what they have to offer so I just went with the big brand since I'm able to get a big discount.

It was also between the Burton Custom binding or Freestyle binding but the custom was a little more aesthetically pleasing and a bit stiffer.

Edit: I'm probably going to stick with the Burton Clash board and Burton Custom bindings. I'll go test out the Burton Moto and Burton Ruler boots to see which one I like better. The Ruler has a lot more tech than Moto tho and might be worth the difference in pricing.

Only thing I can say given the information up above, is go for a shorter board. Not drastically shorter but just a bit. I am 6' and I ride a 154-156.

So given that your 6" shorter than me you can probably make do with 148.

I say this because you are an intermediate rider, so you should still find the board adequately stable and you will start to have more fun on the board, switching from side to side, smaller jumps will be funner, etc.

I'm kinda molding you into a freestyle rider...Lol.

Don't equate board size to height. My wife is 5'9 140lbs. I'm 5'9 180 lbs. We shouldn't be riding the same size board. Board control is based on pressure. Longer contact from the edge supports more weight. Fat dudes ride giant boards to handle the pressure. Skinny dudes ride short boards to be able to throw around with less struggle being they have less weight for edge transfer, etc. Take into account board length for stance widths for extreme examples, but being you have like 6 inches of adjustment its rarely a factor. Get a board thats long enough or you wont progress very fast. A 148 is fine at 145 lbs if you want to be a jib rat that butters into everything and wears t shirts to your knees, but if you want to have fun cruising and most importantly ride pow, shoot for something long enough. The board size you have been riding is reasonable, up to a 54/55.

You don't have to limit yourself to Burton. Other brands at Sportchek are great as well. Just try as many boots as you can there. Don't think that you're annoying, because if it doesn't fit well you won't be having any fun at the slopes. And the sales know that.

Just because you get around on a board "just fine" doesn't mean its the right size for you. I pull out my 148 a couple times a year and can ride it "just fine." The guy is looking for a new board to progress on, there is no point in steering him in any direction other than what a manufacturer (who knows a shitload more about sizing/R&D than we do) suggests for him. All boards have a weight range on them, being in the middle is what you should shoot for depending on the terrain you ride, although they will usually adjust the weight range/size based on the riding style of the board. I'm not trying to be a know it all here, but so often people get stuck on the wrong board and wonder why the fuck they can't progress. Boards REALLY DO make a difference.

^ what kind of board do you ride westopher? I read up on the different types of camber...etc. What would you suggest on mainly moutain crusing and occassional jumps?I ride a rome agent rocker 159. I hit pretty big jumps but not the biggest ones anymore, ride some backcountry and am a powder hound outside the city and a park rat when riding local. I ride pretty hard and have had 40+ days almost every season for 17 years, so I'd say I ride quite aggressively.
The hybrid camber is by far the best IMO for a blend of playfulness and control/stability. The reverse between the feet with regular camber outside the bindings is incredible for pow days and fairly big jump/fast cruising stability. With my last board which was the opposite design (reverse outside the bindings, and regular between the feet) was pretty squirrely at high speeds, but still awesome in deep snow. If you get a few pow days a year, or are really into trying to, the hybrid camber will give you a good amount of float over a regular board, extending your days by saving your back leg and if you feel like hitting some drops its a lot more like landing on a park jump. Also, you don't need to have your stance super setback or a big board. Reverse camber is fun for deep snow, and rails, but I find it very hard to hit jumps or even have any control on hardpack. It just feels so wobbly. I can comfortably suggest the hybrid camber to anyone who likes to ride anything and doesn't want to limit their riding to one style. Either that or old school camber if you like a lot of edge control on hardpack, but I don't mind sacrificing a bit (and I do mean just a bit) for the playfulness and float of the hybrid.

And I'm 5'9" and I ride a 147, a 153, a 155, and a 159. All within my quiver.

I've said it before in previous threads i've replied in. I may weigh 160, but i know that i most certainly don't ride like anyone that is at the same weight range as i.

Yes it's a proven fact, that longer boards equate to higher swing weight, but that only applies to taking the board and trying to spin big numbers. It's the literal difference between spinning a 7, and spinning a 10.

And it's also known [or not] that snowboards can have varying contact/running lengths. giving you the stability to take a shorter board and have it perform [on snow] like a longer board. prime example, is the burton nugget.

So with all these provisions given to you, you should ideally look at all the specs of a snowboard, including laminate, and including the numbers per size. They do make a difference. Even if they're boring tech.

while one board might be a 160, it could have the effecting edge of a board that is a 145, but a HUGE scoop for nose and tail. Making it really effective in powder, where you want the nose of the board to find it's way to the surface, for that float.

Who does good custom ski boot fittings in the lower mainland? I have relatively small feet (size 9) but they are insanely wide. To give you and idea, i had to custom order hockey skates to get something wide enough, even a triple EEE was WAY too skinny. Last pair of ski boots from a shop on the north shore (Destination ski) did a terrible job and they were much too skinny.

I'm from Kamloops, just moved this way two years ago, so when I go back I have free lodging. I had a seasons pass for about 4 years in a row and would ride a min of 20 times in the season so this is why I miss it too. With three mountains and all that terrain to explore the only thing that compares is whistler. If you haven't yet, check out the 3rd mountain Morrisey. We'd explore some of the off the run treed areas and it was always full of nice untouched deep powder. :fuckyeah:

I clearly mentioned that I was trying to mold him into a freestyle rider...

You speak to me as if I do not look at all the specs of my board when I bought it; however, I can tell you that I certainly pay very close attention. I ride very differently than most people as I am a really flowy rider.

Also I need some very specific things to be met for myself because I am a tall dude with big feet but I am very skinny (re: very light).

Also regarding contact edges, I end up detuning a lot of my edge, more than most people, sometimes into the contact patch.

Also while I generally ride one board opening day to closing day, I do have a jibbing board, and a regular camber board for when I want to hit the blackpark. Sorry but my reverse camber just feels squirly stomping a 60' jump.

@Westopher:

As said above, I like hybrid as well for all mountain riding. Lets me do a little of everything, but I still rock a full camber board when I want to throw myself off the big jumps.

Got back from whistler today, logged my 2nd and 3rd days this season.

They need more snow (obviously as you can never have too much snow..:ilied:), but coverage in the open area's isnt bad. There is some rocks and lots of little twigs sticking up, but all avoidable.

The main problem is there is so little terrain open. yesterday they did manage to get garbo going and you can ski down to the village, but no harmony and no blackcomb means a lot of the terrain I usually ride is closed.:okay:

Still I can't complain at all as these two weeks have been complete bonus's in terms of riding time. Should start snowing again middle of next week, and that will make a big difference.

Been meaning to finally upgrade my super old yet trusty bindings. They are generic Ride S Series ones from sportmart that I bought for $50. 6 years ago.

I hardly ever do park. Riding a Rossignol Taipan 158.

Any particular suggestions? I'm guessing any bindings I can point a finger at on a wall should be an upgrade.

Also, any online sites that are good for prices? Gonna want to maybe hunt something for black friday. Time and shipping is no issue, don't plan on boarding in next few weeks yet.

I rode a rocker my first couple of times. This is my second year boarding. But from my experience a rocker is kind of made for beginners. It's sides are like curved up so they don't catch the snow. Less prone to falling over. I got myself an old Millennium Three camber. I like it more than the rockers I rode. Feel like I have more control and flexibility.

westopher
11-25-2013, 12:03 AM
It changes the way you ride. I've said before the hybrid camber is the best of both worlds. The Rome mtn pop camber is my favourite. Reverse between the feet, regular outside. When the board is on hard pack the board is loaded and you still get the same pop with the nose and tail camber as well as the stability. When riding pow, the way the board sits in the snow allows you to unload the pressure on the nose while still keeping your weight mostly centred tip to tail. It means easier float in pow, easier to stomp big landings in pow as if you were hitting things like a park jump, less pressure on your back leg so less thigh burners, and no shitty massive set back stance so stomping switch/riding switch in pow is easier. Its looser, and has better flow in deep stuff and only sacrifices a tiny bit of stability on hardpack. I will NEVER go back. I don't hit as big of park jumps as I used to, but thats nothing to do with the way I ride the board, its purely old man fear/rationalizing.

I just started last season and kept falling on my face with my friend's flat board. I bought a camrocker board, and started carving 2 sessions later.

The rocker definitely helps learning how to carve for beginners, but for experienced riders, I would think they use rocker for tricks.

It's true. Rocker boards are now targeted to allow beginners to feel confidence in their turns and to provide them the ability to link turns with more ease than previous types of snowboards in the past.

BUT, don't discount rocker style/reverse camber boards completely, they are really fun snowboards.

Because some of them are curved from the waste up, they already are placed in the natural arc that you'd find a snowboard flexed to while on edge. Making them easy to turn.

Yes they are loose and generally don't track straight, but they are just a hoot to mess around with.

The two boards i go to are a soft rocker board, and a medium/stiff hybrid camber board, as i've opted out of getting new decks this season. The rocker board i have gets far more use out of a season than the hybrid board, but that's just me.

I do enjoy the hybrid, but only when the snow conditions are harder and that's due to the tuning that my hybrid board has been given. [I took an angle grinder to the edges of my rocker board for butters, and jibbing]

Looking forward to more snow!

LOL @ Rocker boards being for beginners and camber for advanced.

Only time I rock a full camber board nowadays is when literally the only thing I want to do is go to the blackpark and huck myself 70 feet.

Other than that I am riding my SB or my Bataleon, and I am buttering the entire mountain.

Get it dude! Rossignol makes very good boards! I picked up their Krypto last season when EVO was having a sale, and haven't regretted it one bit. As a matter of fact, I just picked up their Jibsaw this season. Can't wait to bring it up the slopes to try that baby out. Some people think its a pain or a waste, but I'll know what I want spec wise, relentlessly search until the right ad pops up and close on it quickly. Golf stuff.. rims (Work summers + Enkei winter set ups on 17" both $1100 total), whatever. I find there are a lot of people out there who need the latest everything that they'll sell last years gear for cheap...

Might not work for everyone (and honestly, I dont spend a lot of time, all about searching keywords) but I save a lot of $ by being patient.

Check out DogFunk and The-House. You don't have to pay the Washington tax on those two sites. EVO is in Washington so you gotta pay that 8.5% when shipping to Pt Roberts/Blaine.

When do people generally start snowboarding season?

This will be my 2nd season, and I started around late December last year. But I can't wait to start ASAP.

Is there decent amount of snow yet, or better to wait?

Very waterproof outerwear
(pants, jacket, gloves)
Helmet
Goggles
layers of clothing (long underwear, moisture wicking first layer shirt, sweater)
facewarmer if its cold
contact lenses if you wear them
impact shorts/snowboard (NOT ROLLERBLADE) wrist guards if you are a safety kind of guy.
Be warm and comfortable and prepared to spend the day on your ass. Its tough the first day, but the learning curve is very steep and you can have fun cruising the mountain within a couple days. Don't get discouraged and have fun!

My first day boarding this season was on Sunday at whistler. Conditions are OK for early season. The bottom third of blackcomb is bare. You can ride from the top of the whistler gondola all the way to the base. From whistler midstation to the base, the snow is pretty thin but enough to ride without damaging your board.

I'm pretty sure you can rent a helmet as well.
Basically waterproof yourself. Or else you'll be soaked and cold very fast.

If you're just trying snowboarding out, I would recommend borrowing a buddy's snowpants/jacket if you can.

Make sure you wear a helmet. Whether you're a pro or a noob.
Way too risky without one imo. Saved me from a probable concussion the first time I went (which was last season).
Foruntately, I never really needed it again so far, but I'll never get on a board without one.

I'm waiting til it hits about 100 cm for the base, I don't want to scratch up my board... Getting so antsy though

I unfortunately thought helmets for only for people riding parks and wound up with a concussion. My buddies back in Kamloops thought only needed when riding trees or heading into the park and one day when I wasn't up with them, one of their friends caught an edge wrong and went down. They said the ski patrol had to shoot her with a shot of adrenaline and she almost died.

Look at the actress a few years back that died from a head injury. Yes I know they look stupid, but I'd rather that and be able to ride the next 50 years, than to be dead

I ride the park as often as I ride the terrain outside the park and I can will attest to the fact that regardless of what you are doing you should wear a helmet.

I can without any exaggeration say that my helmet has literally SAVED MY LIFE.

Wearing a helmet snowboarding or should be like putting on your seatbelt.

Also for those that are going on a few seasons with their helmet do remember that a lot of helmets need to be replaced after a hard impact, or even repeated small impacts. So keep that in mind and if you think you need a new one, go out and buy it.

I think I know what you're talking about but I think it was 2011. The snow sale at the pne had a coupon to discount the gold medal pass. I think this is what you're thinking of.
I didn't see any further deals and wanted to get this pass before it expired. It came to $75 with tax and any ticket I purchase will be no more than $49, plus if you purchase online the daily lift ticket this year there's further savings to make the price $43.

Sounds like you need a proper jacket... lol

Clothing shouldn't be coming out of your jacket (if that's what you mean).
Those snowboarding jackets should have that elastic thing that goes around your waist
and this thing on the jacket sleeve where you put your thumb through before putting on the gloves.
So there's a seal from snow getting in...

2. Cypress mountain's website said the gold medal card was $69 if purchased by December 1 so I jumped on it before then (I see it's still that price). In addition to the daily lift ticket savings we get from having that pass, if when you have the gold medal card you purchase your day pass online there's an additional like $5 savings. A question for the veteran borders:

I have a size 11 or 12 (depending on make) boot, and ride a +15 front, -15 back stance on a wide board. I want to purchase a board that is not wide, will I get excessive toe/heel drag when riding with the above stance?
Have not been able to demo it because it's a Forum board and they are now deceased. R.I.P.

Just as an example, the rome agent wide is 1cm wider than its regular sized counterpart. Its not going to ride like a big clunky board in comparison. If you really want that forum board, look for something that has a waist width of around 260 with the boot size. If its much under, I'd say avoid it.

Just get the wide board. I've ridden a few wide boards and you can hardly tell the difference between a regular width board and its wider counterpart. Toe drag blows.

My suggestion? Once piece thermals, or bib pants. Tuck a sweater into your pants, or snap the waist gater to your pants to give you that snow barrier.

If your outerware is from the same brand, they might even zip up together.

Couple options:

Snowboard binding riser plates.

http://www.absolute-snow.co.uk/admin/images/Larger/63df0205-8f2a-4678-8c46-0ac6c6643534.jpg

They were used frequently in the past, and more so used now by boarder cross racers riding narrow binding angles. They lift the bindings up above the deck of the board to provide your toes and heels more clearance for increased edge angles.

Other option is to get more toe ramps to increase the distance from the toe of your boot from the base of the snowboard. There isn't much in the assistance of the heels though.

Those suggestions above will help big footed riders get onto a narrower board with ease, but won't provide the rider with the best feedback from the snow surface.

The last, but not financially suitable option, is to find a pair of boots with the smallest shell measurement in your foot size. You'd be surprised the difference between a few brands.

Hope any of this helps

Hmm thanks for that tip ^ I have size 15 boot lol and my board isn't wide so I tend to have. Lot of toe/heel drag. Will have to look into it. I wish I could afford a wide boArd but have yet to find one that's 169-173cm and that doesn't cost 600$ lol

For those that have GoPro cameras mounted on their helmet,
how strong is the 3M stuff? If I fall hard, would the camera come off?

The 3M mount that came with the GoPro is pretty strong. You just need to clean the area of the helmet you're going to mount the GoPro with alcohol. After mounting the 3M stuff on the helmet, give it about 24hrs for the adhesive to stick effectively. and then you should be set to go.

They have anchoring kits, its just another pad that has a tethering point on it then you attach a piece of string to the camera and the tether and it acts as a secondary safety measure.

I use the tethers on my car all the time. Last thing you need is to lose a 300 dollar camera at 100km/h
