Friends just bought their first house.. need gifts for the upcoming party.
No cookwares etc since my buddy is a cook and bought all those things up to his standards.
Any ideas?

No set budget but I don't wanna go too crazy lol. Art and stuff is for them to decide.
Their house is completely bland with shades of brown.

IKEA gift card.
Art and stuff is for them to decide.
That covers the bulk of stuff people usually give as a housewarming. I would say in that case a Gift Card to Bed Bath & Beyond or Ikea like above said.

If your friends are into Asian superstition stuff, avoid giving the following items:
clocks, woks, knives (the latter 2 shouldnt be a problem as your buddy is a cook with his own wares)

Personally I appreciated practical gifts. Do they need a modem or an office chair? Art is very subjective. Out of season but chipping together with some friends for a BBQ is another thought.

I've given at least 5 friends universal tool kits and they still use them, regularly.
Most aren't very handy but they always come in useful, whether it's to hang pictures or replace an O-ring on a faucet or change a bulb on their car.
The bonus is, when I have to go over to do repairs, I know they at least have basic tools.
These usually go on sale for 50% off:

I understand clocks, but curious...what's wrong with knives? Wouldn't tool kits be similar [meaning]?

Knives as gifts represent severed relationships.
Typically, if you want to give someone a knife, they have to give you money in return.

For a dude, a tool kit/bag for the house!
The best part of it is you can go big or small and there are tons of tools you can select from.
Think about what they will need to do and the tools that they will need to do it.
Wall mount a TV,
Assemble a bed, table, cabinet, etc.,
Hang pictures,
Measuring shit.

Fancy garbage can. (Simple Human: butterfly) I have the same one. Good gift if he doesn't have one yet. That way everytime he uses it at home he will think of you.
