If your friends are into Asian superstition stuff, avoid giving the following items:
clocks, woks, knives (the latter 2 shouldnt be a problem as your buddy is a cook with his own wares)

Personally I appreciated practical gifts. Do they need a modem or an office chair? Art is very subjective. Out of season but chipping together with some friends for a BBQ is another thought.

I've given at least 5 friends universal tool kits and they still use them, regularly.
Most aren't very handy but they always come in useful, whether it's to hang pictures or replace an O-ring on a faucet or change a bulb on their car.
The bonus is, when I have to go over to do repairs, I know they at least have basic tools.
