SOCHI, Russia – Sweden’s star center Nicklas Backstrom wasn’t allowed to play in the gold medal game against Canada after testing positive for a banned substance.

An NHLPA source tells Yahoo Sports that Backstrom violated anti-doping rules after using an allergy medication. Some, like Claritin, contain pseudoephedrine, a banned substance by the IOC and the World Anti-Doping Federation

The source said he was pulled from the locker room before Sweden's pregame skate, after being announced in the starting lineup. The source indicated he was tested on Friday.

It was reported before the game that Backstrom, who plays for the Washington Capitals, would miss the gold medal match with a migraine, after he didn’t appear in the warmup.

Backstrom is Sweden’s top line center, with four assists in five games

So much drama in that series. Alan Eagleson being rescued from the Red Army during the game by the players (he gave the crowd the finger, LOL). We fans in Canada and NA, for that matter, were led to believe that Russia would be swept by the mighty Canadian squad. By end of game one, it became clear hockey was not just a Canadian game. We lost game one 7 to 3. The fourth game was one of the darkest moments in Canadian hockey. I was so ashamed to say I was from Vancouver. The fans booed our team during the warm up.

Team Canada was booed off the ice at game's end. Responding to the negative public and media reaction in light of the expectation for an overwhelming Team Canada sweep of the series, Phil Esposito made an emotional outburst on Canadian national television:
"To the people across Canada, we tried, we gave it our best, and to the people that boo us, geez, I'm really, all of us guys are really disheartened and we're disillusioned, and we're disappointed at some of the people. We cannot believe the bad press we've got, the booing we've gotten in our own buildings. If the Russians boo their players, the fans ... Russians boo their players ... Some of the Canadian fans—I'm not saying all of them, some of them booed us, then I'll come back and I'll apologize to each one of the Canadians, but I don't think they will. I'm really, really ... The only time it could happen is if the host country cannot complete in time. The choices then would be to cancel the games, postpone them for a year, or look for alternative. If the host country's games were called off early enough, it may be possible.

Some hurdles to overcome: Olympic village, security issues, venues needing upgrades, etc.

No need to apologize......... your post gave me a chance to bring up what people call, "The Series of the Century."

Many said it was the defining moment for hockey. It opened up our eyes to how good other countries' hockey teams and players were. Everybody wanted Vladislav Tretiak, their greatest goalie, and arguably the best goalie in hockey history, to come play here.

Justin Bieber, teen idol and amateur car racer, is beloved by many and the cause of annoyance for many, many more. The Canadian native has called the United States home for the last few years, but Americans have looked to return him to his native land, with over 250,000 signing a White House petition asking for his deportation.
The White House has refused to act on Bieber’s deportation, forcing Americans to try increasingly desperate measures to urge him back north of the border.

Before the Team USA-Canada semifinal hockey game a large billboard in Chicago decided to place a wager. The billboard featured Chicago Blackhawks stars Patrick Kane (playing for the U.S. ) and Jonathan Toews (representing Canada) with the words “Loser keeps Bieber” sprawling across the bottom

Well, after the U.S.’s devastating loss to Canada, it looked like Bieber was going to stay put.

Unfortunately, Bieber did not find the bet funny, and he took to Twitter to broadcast his grievances.

To be honest, I think/want USA to win and I feel they have want it takes to Win Gold vs Canada in the Finals. They lost in Vancouver and the are HUNGRY for the Gold. Their team is similar to 2010 but with a mix of mature and young top tier talent. More so than the Canada in my opinion.

I think its harder for Team Canada to defend their Gold Metal performance. Especially 4 years later.

I am a fan of Luu. But having Price in net will prove to me that Price is an overrated goalie. I just want Luu not feeling that he let Team Canada down by losing in the Gold Metal Game.
