Brazil getting destroyed like that is brutal today. I guess they can try to claim 3rd at least now.....

With defense that bad, I doubt it, they'd be more likely to somehow end up 5th than 3rd.

It's a bit surreal to see Argentina have actually made it to the final. Granted they have played decent football but they haven't looked dominant in any of their games. One thing I'll give them credit for is they are playing very balanced football: keeping possession, and their defense has steadily improved with every game. Still no one has really stepped up outside of Messi. Some glimmers from Di Maria and Higuaín. BUT they work hard every game as a team...Zabaletta in specific works really hard on the wing.

Man oh man I'd love to see Argentina take the final so the Messi nay sayers have nothing left to dispute. I want nothing more than Argentina to win BUT if I'm being objective I can't see them beating Germany in the final. I can only hope they get that little more of that luck that has carried them this far. Then again I couldn't see them beating the Dutch...but once again they have scraped by.

Well, at least now I know who to cheer for during the final match. Would be tough if both my predicted teams were to play each other.

The intensity that Netherlands had coming into the tournament was what kept them afloat. It just wasn't there for the last 2 games.

My two favorite players Messi and Ozil in the World Cup final and I have no idea who to cheer for. It'd be nice to see Messi get one, considering he's practically the whole team (though this semi-final had guys like Mascherano and Zabaleta show up). And it would finally cement his status as the best ever imo.

My heart says Argentina, but the ol' noggin says Germany is going to take this one 3-1. They're just so deep in every position on the field it's almost not fair.

Probably one of the dullest games played in years. Watch around the 110th minute. Holland literally has the ball in Argentinas 3rd and every single player is standing still.

After yesterdays game I was hoping for an actual match. What a shame.

Anyways, this game was shit. Both teams played ultra defensive and barely took any chances. Argentina advances but I think it won't matter. Germany will win; if Argentina can barely expose a Swiss and Belgium defense good luck against Germany.

People make Germany sound like they are invincible which is becoming annoying. Ghana showed that all you need to do is play technical attacking football and take the game to Germany. They played the game fast and set the tempo. Likewise Brazil, despite playing absolute shit on Monday came out with some fire in the second half: almost scoring three times...Neur however managed to save them. I think he's the best keeper in the world (arguable seeing Ochoa's performance at this World Cup) but still one of the top 3 in the world easily.

The irony is Argentina has been playing pretty drub football in this cup. Argentina of the past is brazen, loses possession, sucks at defending but attacks with a frenzy for want of goals and tends to get them for how many they miss. Players would make crazy "glory" runs with the ball "Maradona" style, rocket shots from 30+ yards out (think Tevez vs Mexico in 2010) It's almost as if they have done a 180, learning from their mistakes of the past and decided to give responsible play a try.

Argentina should look at what Ghana did well in that game and incorporate it come Sunday. I believe they can be beaten but it won't be easy by any means and I'm not sure if they will even contemplate their strategy. If they go in with this possession build up style of play it will be very difficult for them to score on Germany. They have to take the game to them and get ready to defend if/when they fuck up...they have to work hard. It's the intricate skilled short passing, and 1 on 1 skill that caught Germany. Stealing the ball and playing the counter attack quickly. They need to take it to them or else I see them losing 1 or 2 nil, at best, holding a dead lock to penalties once again.

A win is a win but there is no glory in penalties...shittiest way to win any football game, but especially the World Cup.

Sorry but if you think Argentina can play the way Ghana does you're delusional. Ghana's strategy for Germany was to sit back and run like fuckers once they got they got the ball. The germans controlled the game up until the later stages of the second half because they played in near 40 degree weather. That game was a one off for the Germans and Argentina cannot match Ghanas athletism or physicality. They also lack Ghana's height up front agaisnt a very tall german backline.

Heh thats right. The algerians played very similar to ghana that game and wrecked havok behind the german backline. However that was mainly because the germans played an absurdly high line that game with Mertersacker (slow ass mofo) and also had Lahm (tiny little guy, best rb though) as their dmf. With Hummels back for Mert and Schweinsteiger in as dmf i don't see the germans being exposed like that again.

You make good points. Do you think there's any other way for a team to beat Germany outside of being stronger and taller? Athleticism in terms of football is a broad attribute so let's put that aside for now.

Counterattack and park the bus. Mark Toni Kroos out of the game, hes been the best player in this world cup. His passing percentage is currently ludicrous. He's the maestro of this team like how Xavi was for Spain in his prime. Attack down the left (Germany is playing a centerback in that position who isn't the fastest).

Germany is so complete in that they can tiki taka like Spain but also play physical due their size advantage in most positions.

Real madrids cl semi win over Bayern is a good example of how to counter atack a team like Germany. I mentioned height earlier because Argentina obviously have some very small players up front which limits them from being able to hit crosses effectively (sometjing Di Maria is very good at for Real Madrid).

You also fail to mention Real Madrid have the two strongest and skilled wingers in the world in Ronaldo and Bale. Messi is good, but he doesn't have the physical strength those two have which brings something completely different to the table.

RMutt's question didn't state Argentina, he just said any team.

"Do you think there's any other way for a team to beat Germany outside of being stronger and taller"

I am well aware of Argentina's players it is why I said they won't be able to play a style that Ghana and Algeria played against Germany. Essentially a 4-4-2 with the front 2 moving to the wings when the team doesn't have the ball and of course when they do have the ball the front two are to burst forward with pace to counterattack.

Hehe
07-11-2014, 04:43 PM
Holland was playing safe. Argentina just followed the same style it has been playing throughout the cup.

If Germany doesn't smart up and keeps leaving 2+ defender to neutralize Messi, they are 50% lost.

Argentina's midfield was incredible. Look at the last game. Whenever the ball crossed the mid lane, Argentina would take the ball. The only way to crack that is to take your chances with Messi and be more aggressive.

People are under the overwhelming impression of a German team that did 7-1 to Brazil. But it was not the Brazil team that earned its historical reputation. They didn't have Neymar, and more importantly, they didn't have Silva. So the entire midfield composition was gone.

Look at the Germany in Ghanna, Algeria or France game. They are not god-like or even dominating at any point. And Argentina certainly had something more than luck to be at the final. Unless Germany changes their tactics dramatically, Argentina is going to be the party-crasher for a lot of people.

Netherlands would have won anyways. but the call on robben should have been a red card, it was kinda outside the box (borderline), and because Silva was the last man, should have been given a red card - that's a very easy call to make, Red card for sure, and give Holland a free kick just outside the box instead of a penalty kick.

But that would have been it for Brazil then, with them playing down 10 men for the next 87 minutes.

Also brazil needs to stop going down so easily, I thought oscar had a good chance to continue play and get a scoring chnace, but instead went down so easily just to win a free kick, which amounted to nothing as it was wasted by Jo.

Well played Germany. Very deserving. Props to Argentina. Everyone thought you'd get pushed over easily and you played a great game. If only you had finished those precious chances.

QFT.

Everyone thought Germany was gonna run over Argentina and take this game easy but Argentina was resilient and took the Germans to the second part of ET before the Germans got one in.

It sucks that they weren't able to get the win but they played a good match and gave it their all.

Vamos Argentina!

looking at the gif...that goal was scored cos the Argentinian player to the right of the Germany scorer got lazy and jogged, didn't cover his position, saw the cross come in...went oh shit..turned on turbo but was way too late...

yea its 2nd half of OT...but that guy could've saved the goal for his team..

Just by stats alone, Messi has him beat.

I was talking to a bunch of people about Messi not "deserving" the award.
Basically the MVP, is just that, the Most Valuable Player to their team right?
It's obvious that Argentina would not have been anywhere close to battling for the cup in the finals without him. Every goal he scored and assisted on was crucial and helped them advance. Can you say that about any other player for their team?
Scuba expert Robben? Netherlands is stacked, he would not nearly be missed as much if he wasn't on the pitch. One could say Van Persie is more critical to the team than Robben.
Same with Germany, Klose? Muller? Take any 1 of those players off and they still have an elite team from top to bottom.

Neymar is a strong case since Brazil got dismantled after he got injured, but Silva didn't play either, and it's up for debate whether Silva would have been more important to the team than Neymar given Brazil's defensive break down.

Messi deserved it, literally single-handedly carrying the 10-man team to the cup final. Sad to see him accept the Golden Ball with such a disappointing face but Germany was the best team of the tournament.

While I agree, an injured Di Maria likely wouldn't do much. A healthy Di Maria would've made a substantial difference, however Argentina would've still been relying on Higuain/Aguero to put Di Maria crosses into the net.

Perhaps that extra threat on the wing opens up some room for Messi. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see how that would've turned out.

As I said earlier, my two favorite players were in the final which kept me interested. While I'm happy to see Ozil and the Germans win playing some attractive football, it would've be so much better had Messi stepped out of Maradona's shadow.

2014 is already lauded as the best WC in the modern era by some pundits. Judging by some of the performances by individuals (the usuals plus the guys like James Rodriguez who used this tourny as a coming out party) as well as teams like Costa Rica, I would tend to agree. So many great stories out of this WC. And to balance out the good, there were the very tragic stories of Neymar and the Brazillians, as well as the funny with Suarez pulling a biting three-peat on Chiellini.

At least Euros are only 2 years away. I can see Germany pulling in 3 consecutive major tournaments like the Spanish did prior to 2014. 4 years is always a long wait, but since it always coincides with the Winter Olympics it doesn't seem to be too long of a wait.

No, the ending was perfect. Klose comes off for the last time after playing a pretty good game...old guy doesn't have enough left to go more than 90, tells Gotze to go get 'em...and the kid, who probably grew up watching Klose score big goals (what kid in Germany didn't?), goes out and fucking gets 'em. Torch passed. WELTMEISTER.

Tim Budong

Gotze scoring the winner is the perfect way to finish.

The oldest players next World Cup will be Lahm and Schweini at 34 and 33 if Klose retires. Neuer at 32. Everyone else will be in their 25-30 range and maybe Reus will be healthy.

Will pretty much be the same team.

Maradona might be a complete idiot but his opinion on Messi winning the Golden Ball is completely right.

Messi had a decent World Cup but there a few players who clearly out performed him. James Rodriguez, Muller, Robben, Neur and arguably Kroos had better overall performances then he did. IMO James should have won it, each match he played he was the star and basically carried his team with breath taking moments.

When the games mattered the most, Messi had very little influence. Seems like for top teams it's getting easier and easier to mark him out of the game, similar year at Barcelona for him against top teams.

No it's not. It's an award classified as "Best Player". Not MVP.

Also no offense but you obviously don't know shit about soccer if you think this Netherlands team is stacked and that they could easily have replaced Robben who was hands down their best player. No offense taken and I do admit that I don't know that much about futbol. I am definitely not hardcore enough to be following Eredivisie league players but from watching this entertaining world cup, you can't tell me that Messi was not key for Argentina's run.
An argument could be made that, if Messi and Robben were to switch places, what would the world think?

Could Robben have single-handedly dove his way to the cup final playing for Argentina?
Would Netherlands have went all the way if Messi was their star striker?

From a casual point of view as a casual soccer fan and watching this world cup, I would have to say Messi was the best player and most important to the team.
Rodriguez was great too but he couldn't push his team out of the 1st round. I would think team results played a factor into deciding the Golden Ball too. Messi didn't score in any of the knockout stages, but his presence alone almost willed them to the trophy?

You're comparing a Columbian team with mostly average players to a stacked Argentinian team. Yes yes I know, the media was generally saying Messi lacked support in offense. Argentina had a world class defense behind Messi. They won most of their games because of this defense, not because they had a killer offense that banged in 2-4 goals per game. Mascherano to me was the best player on Argentina in both of their final knockout games. If not for his last ditch tack on Robben we would have seen another all European final.

soccer - Jiffier gifs through HTML5 Video Conversion. (http://gfycat.com/OblongJoyousGelada)

The majority of pundits and knowledgeable soccer fans agree that James was the stand out player of the tournament. The only reason why Columbia even had a sniff of passing the quarters was due to his brilliance. He showed up in all games even in that last game when Brazil basically kicked him any chance they had.

Messi didn't score in any of the knock out stage games because he was simply marked out of them. Top teams know the blueprint to stop him. We've witnessed this with Barcelona this year as well.[/B]

dude most of the members on here dont know shiet about soccer.

any real fans that actually follow soccer knows that guy's post was full of shiet. Amen, Robben was one of the many that played deserving of the golden ball, along with neuer and rodriguez. And what you said about Eredivisie players is bang on. This is why Van Gaal had to play a more defensive scheme against argentina because of the players he had to work with that game. Netherlands barely beat mexico, and didnt come into the tournaments as favourites.

You can tell when someone's a newb when they call robben a chronic diver.
Like who the fuck doesnt embellish? at least robben admits that he dives. I give him mad respect for that. and guess what? he's also one of the best in the world at dribbling and getting into the box. I remember during world cup 2010 and other games where he would get fouled and kept playing, or just jump over the defenders, but that lead him nowhere. so he does what everyone else does and thats go down when he gets fouled legitimately so his team can get a penalty kick. I would say, given how many opportunities he has to take dives or embellish, he probably dives less than the average player. I see him all the time in the box for Bayern and Real Madrid and getting tackled but he keeps playing or just jumps over the defender instead of going down and drawing the foul. I just hate how amateur soccer fans calling Robben a diver because they saw him embellish one play during the mexico game. When you get as many chances to dive in the box but don't, that's respect. other plays just immediately fall down when the defender is remotely near them but robben usually doesnt unless its an obvious foul, and thats why i respect robben.

He didnt dive like Hulk did against the germany game where NO one touched him. that's diving. or actually, go watch the germany - brazil game again (i know i rewatched it) and you will see how bad all the brazilians were diving during that game. or how about no one talking about david luiz intentionally trying to kick the ball at Muller?

Did Messi deserve it? maybe, but if you are going with an Argentinian player you could argue Mascherano deserved it more because he was a superb during the knockout stage. he did had the most tackles of any players at the world cup and also were a big reason Argentina didnt give up and goals in the knockout stage until 113th? minute against Germany.

And sorry to all you brazil fans, but here's the truth: Brazil is not as good as people make them out to be. the old days of beautiful Brazilian offensive football is gone. this team barely beat croatia, was a penalty away from losing to Chile, and had to man-handle colombia in order to win.
