The Official 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Thread

Alright boys and girls, gif (www.gfycat.com/GregariousSpicyGrub) ,we're closing in on a month of some of the best football there is to watch. Figured I'd place this thread here since there's more traffic.
Here are some guides to look through:
1) FourFourTwo Guide to the World Cup (http://theguide.fourfourtwo.com/en/home/index.html)
2) The matches of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil? - FIFA.com (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/index.html)
3) /r/Soccer: The Football Subreddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/soccer) --- should have "match threads" with streams posted for matches that have kicked-off
4) All 32 World Cup finalists - Imgur (http://imgur.com/a/ukeng) These posters are really cool, except Croatia :suspicious:
5) Nike Commercial 2014: Winner Stays
I am english, so I'll pray we can actually string together some actual football this time around lol.
Spain Netherlands on matchday 2, a rematch of the final in 2010; perhaps the first big game.
Joga Bonito
in canada, we call it soccer. best get used to it or you'll be in a fit every time someone says soccer.
and i remember that final game in 2010. it was such crap. 1st half was completely bogged down by whistles and the second half had nothing.
i have no respect for a sport where at the highest levels, it's full of corrupt officials and the players like to pretend someone took a crowbar to their legs. won't be watching this year

Well for englands sake lets hope he wont be firing on all cylinders; actually fuck him, he's a liverpool scouser :p
Hmm well, a good portion of our midfield and attack will be liverpool players, hopefully they bring their league form to brazil.
Not too sure how well the dutch will do this time, its seems they dont have as strong a squad, lot of youth this time? Brazil, Germany and argentina for the finals probs.

Lol that is true, much better than south africa at least. Wish john terry was in, him and Cahill would be good.
spain and germany can just throw on all their midfielders and still own #0-11-0
As long as Argentina/Uruguay don't win, it's all good. If Brazil makes the finals, they better win. I can't imagine what would happen if Brazil lost, again. They'd probably tear down the stadium.

Probably the weakest Dutch squad in a long time, their defense is terrible.
I'm not sure why people are saying Brasil are favorites. They have a ton of pressure to win the whole thing in their home country. They have a so-so midfield and their starting striker ain't exactly a star either, although he has performed well in recent times for the national team (Fred).
Going to be funny if Spain wins it with Diego Costa leading their line (Brasilian born, made the switch this year to join Spain). I hope he hired some extra bodyguards.

the only reason i said brazil is cuz the government is having a super hard time claiming the ppl down in brazil as nothing has been improved since the economic crash, ppl would rather see the world cup & Olympic money go towards the country & poor

Those calls on Croatia man, very controversial. I felt like Brazil's defense was lackluster and Croatia had very good scoring chances at the end of second half. What do you guys think about the goalkeeper call where the player bumped Cesar and then they got the rebound but it was called off?

was thinking the exact same thing about Brazil's defense...but meh, only first game. Croatia had such an easy time going through Brazil in the first half but they tightened up a bit on the second half.
That call though, haha that was just shitty. Replays show that guy was barely touched, i didn't see where the ref was, but maybe from the ref's perspective that guy got hauled down? Still, that was a shit call.
Bump on Cesar was a solid call imo.

That's the worst part about it, diving is "part of the sport". Rather than being shamed and getting kicked out of a game for embellishing, they are praised by their teammates and fans if they get away with it.
Not really racist!

Except you can get penalized for that in hockey, all I ever see in soccer if he doesn't draw a call by laying on the field half dead is play just goes on.

You sometimes get penalized for that, the same way sometimes players get penalized for diving/hooking/slashing.

They get punished all the time. I watch soccer regularly (EPL, La LIGA, CL etc) and players get a yellow for diving/embellishing all the time.
The thing is its very hard sometimes since the game tends to be very fast nowadays but usually if you have a competent ref the diver will get punished. It can go both ways sometimes, watch the video below; Torres gets sent off for DIVING when he was actually tripped by the Man U player.
Torres red card Chelsea vs united - YouTube
The Japanese ref for this game I noticed was constantly out of position (he was sprinting A LOT during the match). For the penalty call he didn't even consult with his assistants, just straight up pointed for a penalty right away. Poor ref but Brazil was the better team today...regardless of the penalty.
Anyways once the knockout stages come around FIFA is only going to have top euro refs from the big 4 leagues.

The Japanese ref for this game I noticed was constantly out of position (he was sprinting A LOT during the match).
Yeah, apart from a few of the horrific miscalls, that was one of the things that stuck out to me most. While over the 90 minutes Brazil was certainly the better team (maybe not 3-1 final scoreline better, but better nonetheless), the referee played a significant role in that aspect. Let's face it, that penalty was one of the softest I've seen in the past year and a ref with either better positioning to see the foul or the balls to actually call it should have red carded Neymar before he ever scored. That was a ridiculously blatant arm strike to the face of Modric, it's one thing to make contact with someone from the air (like a few moments before that when Paulinho's elbow made contact with Perisic coming down after jumping for the ball that Perisic didn't really challenge for but instead just got under the Brazilian) but it's another to from the ground just straight arm your opponent in the face. I know the stage is huge and refs don't want to be the headline (he hadn't screwed that up, yet..) but that's a red to me:

SPAIN needs to SMACK Chile and Australia just to win the Goal Diff
At this rate, HOLLAND can beat the Aussies but lose 2-1 or 1-0 to Chile
they can still win the group

Pretty much.
Holland essentially won the group already. The only team that Spain MAY be able to smack is Australia, but let's face it. They won 2010 through defense, not scoring. If they get rattled this easily they ain't making it out of group B.

Too soon to say. Chile has so much time to pop a few more in during this match it makes it interesting, I wouldn't rule out Chile

Spain's tiqui-taca style (not sure in English. Tiki-taca?) is getting destroyed.
But TBH, tiqui-taca was not exactly the problem... Spain performed badly. The game was at best a shitty try of tiqui-taca.
Granted the Oranje came prepared. They were faster and took very aggressive offences (the weakness of tiqui-taca). Kudos to them.

Tiki-taka has been exploited the last two years, see Barcalona and this years Bayern as examples.

VANCOUVER - A group of people gathered together to watch the Australia vs. Chile match during the World Cup on Friday got a little violent with each other.
A fight broke out at The Mexican, a Granville Street bar, and spilled out onto the sidewalk.
Vancouver Police did attend and a number of arrests are seen being made. However, there is no official word from police on any charges.
A tourist caught the footage seen above.

I wouldn't go quite as far as to say they were struggling in the first, two crossbars and generally controlling the game means they certainly were frustrated with not having broken through. The red to be fair was a second yellow, and Palacias? was being a tool - there was no way that wasn't going to be a penalty.
I can't stand the commentators though. Last night the Swiss offside goal call that the guy couldn't comprehend, and not fucking understanding that the first no goal picture from the glt was obviously from Benzema's initial shot and that it was obviously an OG. From the hilarious threads on /sp/ it sounds like commentators all over the world couldn't wrap their heads around it.

I meant lucky as in Honduras fucked up in the box which caused France to have a huge advantage. I watch soccer throughout the year for the past 10 years ( EPL, La Liga, Ligue 1, Champions League etc)...Im not one of those people that only watches world cup soccer for a month every 4 years and pretends they know everything about the game.
France was having a hard time finding potency in their attack in the first 25 or so minutes of the game. Yes they had more control but Honduras was giving them a hard time by pushing up. As long as France ended up dominating is what matters most though, they would have been much more lethal if Ribery wasn't injured.

I watched that entire game, France controlled the game even before the sending off. Honduras had a couple crosses into the box before that but France was in no way troubled.
Ribery's loss sure hurts but I think this will allow Griezmann to shine who had a terrific season this year.

It wasn't luck that allowed Honduras to fuck up in the box. Benzema was simply positioned better to receive the pass and Palacias had to resort to knocking him to put him out of position. Palacias got caught for it fair and square. France wasn't lucky because a foul was called and it resulted in a PK.
I'm surprised someone who watched soccer for 10 years would speak of LUCK when it comes to a obvious foul call. What's next? France was lucky the GK didn't jump the other way to block the PK shot?

Pogba was the French played fouled. Same player that Palacios got into it with for his first yellow...
What I personally do find lucky for France was that the vastly outclassed Hondurans didn't end up actually injuring any of the French players.

I hate to say it because I love Portugal as a country but they were never any match for the much more compete German team. Pepe getting sent off isn't at all surprising to me, he's a loose cannon for both club and country. Great defender but his passion means he has a tendency to go full retard sometimes. Until Muller's second I tended to think that if Portugal's back line could get their shit together and learn how to clear balls to anywhere but a white shirt that Ronaldo's pace on the break could hurt Germany but yeah that's not going to happen, I reckon.

so you never know
anything short of a Spain victory=spain byebye
Aggressive offence really messes up the tiki-taka strategy that Spain relies heavily on.
Unless Spain can really pull off an amazing tiki-taka (really holding good control of ball), Chile can fuck Spain up real bad.

thankfully they already got 6 pts and sit at the top alone with such a large GD margin. now lets hope someone else can step up for RVP and have a good game against chile.

I can foresee Spain's legendary coach Vicente del Bosque going to step down after this World Cup.
Casillas is f--king done since the european league championship
He no long a world class goalie.
I'm lovin' it :D

Spain going home for sure. Their offence is predictive and they are trying to play the same game they did 4 years ago when everyone has caught up to this game of intricate possession based football. del Bosque needs to take Alonso and Costa out to even stand a chance of a comeback.
Chile I have to say have really impressed me thus far in the tournament. I see them going very far. They will probably be the Uruguay of 4 years ago and maybe more.
This is turning out to be one of the best World Cup's I have ever seen. Major upsets but the quality of football from smaller "B" level nations is sublime. You can no longer just say the big guys will make it to the knockout round...it's really anyone's game. What a beautiful game it is.

Chile can still win the group.
So Monday is for top spot simply based on points. None of this Goal bullshit
unless it draws, then the dutch wins and probably avoiding Brazil
hahaha

Where do I start today. Australia. Great effort. Looking forward to see what they bring in Russia when their players have a little more experience under their belts. They clammed up the central midfield and really stifled the Netherlands. That wasn't nearly as comfortable of a victory as I had expected but still with every Australian goal I felt confident that the Dutch would have a response. It's a good thing they can score though because I still feel the Dutch will leak goals to Chile. RVP out is going to hurt them, I'd wager, as they do not want to place second as I'm pretty sure Brazil will be waiting for them. I actually fancy Chile to leave group B in top spot now.
Spain. What a mess. I don't even know what to say. Del Bosque was wrong to expect that his aging, slower team can still play possession-based football. A pressing, aggressive team like Brazil paved the way in the CC final last year and I had a feeling that at the very least the Dutch would give them a drubbing, and I was right. Nobody is making neat little runs anymore, in midfield or in the box, being even more important now that teams are pressuring them all over the pitch. They don't have the outlets they once had, the players are static as hell. When Ausfailia and its youngsters are putting in a better showing than you you know you've done something horribly wrong. I see hope for Spain for the Euros in France, but they need to ditch a bunch of dead weight, realize they need to play a different style (including learning how to play with a number nine) and they need to incorporate their youth more. Spain have dominated the U21's for the past few years and that group needs to feature more, not just Azpilicueta and Koke (and Thiago if not for injury).
Chile is looking good. Their work rate is incredible and they've really caught my eye with how well the front line has meshed together. That first goal today was fantastic. If they can eek out a 2-1 or 3-2 over the Netherlands (quite probable imo) they could really challenge later on in the tournament. Momentum in a short 7-game final like this means a lot, and Brazil's has been slowed a little..
Gonna make for an exciting end to group B at least. My 2c.

I wonder if the game would have been any different if Netherlands kept their 4-3-3 formation instead of what looked like a 3-5-2 lol

Needed to play Fabregas as the 9th. Simply considering it was not enough. No Xavi = no midfield control. Inniesta wasn't making much space for himself neither.
Spain was just a mess in every way. Such disappointment.

They played 3-5-2 against Spain...
They'll probably go 4-3-3 with RVP out next game. Doesn't matter though since they already qualified.
End of an era for Spain. Probably the greatest national team we'll see in our lifetimes. Three major tournaments in a row is something we will not see again for a long time. Del Bosque made some major errors leaving out great young talents like Isco and Carvajal, also unlucky with some injuries to Thiago and Navas. Don't expect tiki-taka to go away with Spain, its going to stick they just need to incorporate more pace into the squad which is what they sorely lacked without Navas. Also Casillas needs to retire and hand over the reigns to De Gea...

Dutch can go for a draw as well. Huntelaar will fill in for RVP, so I'm expecting a 4-3-3 so Robben and Memphis can feed him crosses.
